The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has explained why the senators did not grill the immediate past governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, during the ministerial nominees screening.
Akpabio cited Wike’s experiences as a governor and a minister under former President, Goodluck Jonathan.
The former Rivers governor was asked to take a “bow and go” after reading his brief profile and following an appeal by Senator Barinada Mpigi (PDP, Rivers).
Akpabio noted that Wike was not thoroughly grilled because of his records having formerly served as a minister.
He said Wike had appeared before the Senate for screening when he was nominated as a minister by ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan.
“Having been nominated again for a ministerial position, there is no point asking him many questions,” Akpabio said.
Former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, says President Bola Tinubu won’t regret nominating him to serve as a minister in his cabinet.
Wike stated this when he appeared before the red chamber for screening on Monday afternoon.
Wike is the only chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the ministerial list of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration sent by the President to the Senate last Thursday.
Wike told the Senators that during his time as governor of the oil-rich Niger Delta state from May 2015 to May 2023, he started and completed many projects to improve the infrastructure of the state and that he invited politicians across party lines to commission them.
“These things can be achieved if you are committed, if you have passion for the job,” Wike told the lawmakers.
He said there are many former governors who desire to be a minister but who don’t have passion the serve Nigerians.
“There are so many people who wants to be ministers for the sake that ‘I was a governor’, for the sake that ‘I was a minister’ but there are those who say, ‘Look, what do I have to offer? Am I committed to this job?’
“I thank Mr President for nominating me. I believe, knowing how hungry Mr President is to solving the problems of Nigeria, we have no choice but to give him that required support. And I can assure you, if I am confirmed in whatever capacity, Mr President will not regret nominating me,” said the ex-Rivers governor who was a minister during the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
Wike Cleared For Ministerial Role
After his introductory comment, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, attested to Wike’s competence and capacity to deliver in office and subsequently asked him to take a bow as the red chamber cleared him for ministerial role in the Tinubu government.
Following the transmission of Tinubu’s much-awaited ministerial list to the red chamber last Thursday, the Senate commenced the screening of the first batch of the nominees today (Monday).
The screening commenced at the upper chamber on Monday afternoon during plenary upon the arrival of the Senate President.
Channels Television reliably gathered that 20 of the 28 today ministerial nominees completed their documentation for the screening at the Senate today (Monday).
Those yet to complete their documentation, it was gathered, are currently out of the country..
I Will Not Listen To Nnamdi Kanu From Nigeria, He Must Meet Me In Finland - Simon Ekpa
"BRGIE @BiafraRGIE BREAKING! I will not listen to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, from DSS, from Hospital or from Nigeria. I will not talk to him on phone, on video call, on television call or internet call. I want to talk with him one on one in Finland. Anything less than this, sit back and see how Nigeria collapse will start in the coming days. I am here to Liberate Biafra and I don’t expect political criminals to be part of the liberation. When india fought Britain, they also suffered none of them lamented about Gandhi. You must be ready to complete this sacrifice to the last minute."
"Having finished the Bible School, I came back to Nigeria to be a real man because I lost my father in 1995 and at that point I needed to now carry the mantle..of my family and since that time I have never looked back because God has been good to me. God has blessed me and I have determined and I promised myself that I will tell as many people about the workings of God and the knowledge of God and the ability of God to deliver, to defend and to build up somebody as possible because that is part of my calling in life and that is why I am deeply involved in part-time Christian ministry and in preaching in Churches whenever and wherever I am invited."
The Enugu State chapter of the Igbo apex socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, on Sunday, declared its end of a sit-at-home protest in the South-East in general and the Enugu State in particular.
The state chapter of Igbo socio-cultural group said it was fully backing the Enugu State Government in its efforts to end the sit-at-home in the state, insisting that the protest had outlived its usefulness.
The PUNCH reports that a factional leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra, led by a Finland-based pro-Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa, who styled himself as the Biafran Prime Minister of Biafra Republic Government in Exile, has been enforcing Monday sit-at-home, which the main IPOB group led by Chika Edoziem had since cancelled.
The factional group had insisted on the sit-at-home as a way of calling for the release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is being detained by the Department of State Services since June 2021.
But Ohanaeze in a statement on Sunday signed by its Enugu President, Professor Fred Eze, applauded the courage of the state governor, Peter Mbah, in taking the bold step to put an end to “the scourge of sit-at-home in Enugu State”.
Ohanaeze recalled that before the cancellation by the government, Enugu State was overwhelmed by a climate of fear such that people could not go about their normal business with confidence.
“In Enugu State, every Monday became an unofficial holiday as businesses and other social activities usually came to a halt.
“Thus, the continued observance of the sit-at-home order had a significant negative impact on the economy of Enugu State. Businesses were rapidly closing down while others were relocating away from the state leading to the loss of foreign direct investment and massive capital flight.
“Thus, the action by the Enugu State Government could not have come at a better time. That Governor Peter Mbah also called for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu; and has triggered steps to get the Federal Government to release Kanu are indicative that the governor understands the core issues at stake
“The sit-at-home order is self-immolating and has disrupted all productive assets and resources in the state since its introduction and enforcement.
“Ohanaeze Enugu State chapter expresses happiness that the leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has himself categorically ordered the cessation of any form of sit-at-home in whatever guise in the South-East Nigeria,” he said.
The group therefore applauded the “life-saving order by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu because the sit-at-home is counterproductive as it does incalculable harm to the people IPOB is fighting for.”
Ohanaeze appealed to parents, guardians, youths, and the general public to join hands with Mbah and his administration in ensuring that sit-at-home was put to a permanent end in the state.
Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi has told his supporters how to celebrate his 62nd birthday, IGBERETV reports.
He wrote on his Twitter page;
"Wednesday 19th July 2023, marks my 62nd Birthday. While I remain immensely grateful to God for His infinite mercies, I still maintain my decision of over 20 years, that I will not celebrate my birthdays in today's Nigeria, with the current deplorable state of the nation.
"However, some friends, members of the Labour Party, and OBIdient Family and supporters have asked how they can join me in celebrating that day, and even present some gifts.
"Let me humbly and respectfully appeal to all those who desire to celebrate me with any kind of gifts, to look around them and extend such gifts to the people in need, especially in these difficult times.
"I urge them to visit hospitals, orphanages, and homes for the aged and people with disabilities, and offer them such generous gifts. They can also visit schools of basic studies in remote areas and support them with the basic amenities they need.
"Those who wish to do more can visit various IDP camps in different parts of the country. I intend to do the same thing. Aside from sharing my time and resources with the less fortunate people around me, I plan to raise money for schools, hospitals, etc.
"I have already said that the sacrifices for a better Nigeria must now start from us, the leaders and the well-placed. The state of our nation must give us cause to pause and ponder. There is far too much insecurity, violence, and bloodshed.
"This month alone over 200 lives have been lost to sustained violent attacks in Mangu LGA in Plateau State. Similarly, in Benue State, over 100 lives have been lost in recent times, the latest being 27 persons killed in Adogo Ugbaam, Akpuuna, and Diom communities in Ukum LGA.
"There are also many other cases of kidnappings and killings in different parts of the country. I want to celebrate in a New Nigeria where the lives and properties of citizens will be secure. I want to celebrate in a productive Nigeria that can create opportunities for our youths
"I want to celebrate in a Nigeria that works for all and which Nigerians can be proud of. This, and not my birthday, is the true celebration that will be beneficial to all Nigerians.
"As Nigerians, we must always expand our imagination of the Possible, believing as we do that a New Nigeria is POssible. -PO"
