Pete Edochie is a really bad actor.

He's been playing the same role his entire life.

But Nigerians live and die by seniority so the older he gets, the less anybody is able to point this glaring elephant in the room out.

PoliticsIf Your Boss Can't Trust You Why Are You Still There? - FFK by EBMedia(op):
Former Aviation minister, Femi Fani Kayode has told Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo that he is no longer relevant in President Buhari's government.

Recall that Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, on Monday took a bill to President Muhammadu Buhari, who is in London on a private visit, for signing. The bill amended the Deep Offshore (and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contract) Act

Femi Kayode reacted to the development on Twitter. He wrote:

How do you describe a VP that insists on remaining in office after his boss refuses to hand over power to him when he goes on leave and instead gets his Chief of Staff to fly over to London to sign legislative bills into law? If your boss can't trust you why are you still there?

TV/MoviesGenevieve Nnaji’s 'Lionheart' Disqualified By Oscar Over Language, She Reacts by EBMedia(op): 7:22am On Nov 05, 2019
IgbereTV reports that the Nigeria's 2020 Oscar entry 'LionHeart' was disqualified on Monday November 4, for having too much English dialogue.

The movie which is Nigeria's first-ever submission to the Academy Awards, was submitted for the international feature film Oscar category. The Academy's description of an international feature film "is a feature-length motion picture (defined as over 40 minutes) produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track."

LionHeart which is not excluded from entering other Oscar categories including consideration for best picture, has just under 12 minutes of dialogue that is in the Igbo language native to Southeastern Nigeria, while the remaining 94-minutes is in English. With the disqualification, the number of films in contention for the award has dropped from 93 to 92.

However reacting to the disqualification on Twitter, Genevieve Nnaji wrote;

"This movie represents the way we speak as Nigerians. This includes English which acts as a bridge between the 500+ languages spoken in our country; thereby making us #OneNigeria." She added, "It’s no different to how French connects communities in former French colonies. We did not choose who colonized us. As ever, this film and many like it, is proudly Nigerian."

American filmmaker who directed the Netflix drama miniseries When They See Us, Ava DuVernay also reacted to the disqualification. She tweeted;

"To @TheAcademy, You disqualified Nigeria’s first-ever submission for Best International Feature because its in English. But English is the official language of Nigeria. Are you barring this country from ever competing for an Oscar in its official language?"

The theme of the summit is:'Reaching Greater Heights.

He said “The six sectors listed in the summit namely: Education, Healthcare, Mining, Power, Infrastructure and Agriculture, are the crucial sectors and are very important for Nigerian’s economy.

“We encourage all our partners to maximise all the platforms provided and prospects available for businesses to prosper. Our trade and investment sector in Nigeria has remained a major trading partner to Canada in Africa.

“Canada import includes minerals, fuel, cocoa, rubber and many more while it exports vehicles equipment, manufacturing equipment and software.

“We have also increased double taxation agreement in 1999; we expect our foreign investment and promotion to be concluded by both countries as early as possible in 2020.

“However, the next few years promises to be exciting for businesses in Nigeria,’’ Osinbajo said.

He urged all visitors and friends of Nigeria to take time to visit the city of Abuja, test “Our Suya and most importantly, our Nigerian Jollof rice”.

The Director-General, West and Central African Global Affairs Canada, Mr Tarik Khan, said Nigeria remains the largest trade and investment partners to Canada in the Sub-Sahara Africa.

He said his priority was to promote trade and investment in the continent especially in the Sub-Sahara Africa, adding that Nigeria is the largest investors into Canada from the region.

“The potential for growth as the Excellency mentioned is significant, in areas of technology, ICTs, Agriculture, Creative Industries, Aviation, Education and Technical Vocational Training in our communities’ projects.

“I am convinced that Nigeria is also an important future market that holds untapped opportunities for Canadian companies, and its young dynamic entrepreneurial population has a natural capabilities towards innovation.

“Nigerian recent decision to join the African continental free trade area and to see greater economic integration with its neighbours, we only expect more opportunities to emerge.

“Innovation is the key to our common future as we know in this industrial revolution and building human capacity in the growth sector of the future is what we need to aim."

He said that Canada has introduced a number of policies that favour greater trade and investment in emerging markets like Nigeria in recent years. With the shifting wind of international trade our government has recognised the need that our export and investment links are more diversified.

“For this reason we have launched our trade diversification strategy. Canada is committed to invest 1.1 billion dollars to help Canadian businesses access new markets with the objectives of increasing international exports by 50 per cent by the year 2025."

PoliticsIPDI: It Is Wrong To Have Northerners On NDDC Board by EBMedia(op): 10:28pm On Nov 03, 2019
IgbereTV reports that the Ijaw Peoples Development Initiative, IPDI, a rights group, said that it is not right to have Northern representatives on the board of Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, saying since North is not part of Niger Delta region, they should immediately be removed from the board.

Mr. Austin Ozobo, the National President of the group, who questioned the composition of NDDC board, said in a statement, “It is also appalling that NDDC under President Muhmmadu Buhari is being politicized. One wonders what Northern representatives are doing in NDDC, If I may ask is North now part of Niger Delta? Are Southerners or Niger Deltans represented in the Northeast Development Commission? If the answer is no, then all names of Northern representatives should be expunged from the current NDDC board, as the new board is faulty."

IPDI also complained about the marginalisation of Ijaws in Delta state in the current board of NDDC. He said: “Ijaws in Delta State produce the highest quantum of oil in the midst of tribes that are now Buhari’s favorites in Delta State. They sidelined them in the previous Buhari NDDC board and now the same injustice is playing out. “

“It is not only disgusting, but hatred of Ijaws been displayed. We want the injustice and every illegality against Ijaws addressed. It is our demand that the Senate should suspend action on the new board pending when the government will deem it fit to address our plight, as it is capable of threatening the peace of the nation."

IPDI also condemned the recent happenings in the NDDC. It said, “It is shocking, as we are beginning to wonder the source Senator Godswill Akpabio, Minister of Niger Delta’s unconstitutional powers , as there is no basis for another interim NDDC board, especially when names of substantive board is undergoing screening at the Red Chambers.”

“We fault Akpabio hasty NDDC interim management board or committee as it is illegal, baseless and unconstitutional. It is meant to serve personal interests and it is appalling that President Buhari’s government is turning NDDC to a trade union and a conduit pipe, leaving its primary objectives camouflaged with a fake audits.

“We reject Akpabio emergency interim board as it is a perceived attempt to loot and siphon public funds to personal treasury of few corrupt politicians."

PoliticsDele Momodu: Alhaji Atiku Abubakar And The Verdict Of Man by EBMedia(op): 10:50am On Nov 02, 2019
In this edition, Dele Momodu writes on the Supreme Court's Judgement on the petition filled by the presidential candidate of the APC in the February 2019 General Elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Read below:

Fellow Nigerians, the cookie finally crumbled for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar two days ago as the highest court in Nigeria, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, threw his case out of the window, in a jiffy. He had approached the Supreme Court for a reprieve from what he claimed was the hellish decision of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal dismissing his Petition on all grounds. He sought a declaration that he had won the last Presidential election against the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari, and that INEC, Nigeria’s electoral body had manipulated his rightful votes and dashed what belonged to him to his opponent. He said that he had the INEC server to prove the dastardly machinations of the electoral body and that his Petition should not have been dismissed, but upheld. He also made other allegations about the qualifications of the incumbent, President Muhammadu Buhari to contest the elections. His initial foray of laying his grouses before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal had met a brick wall and his case was brushed off in a manner that stunned many observers as the Tribunal had simply pooh poohed all his frantic declarations and arguments, dismissed them out of hand as lacking any merit. The story was virtually the same at the Court of Appeal. Two days ago, the Supreme Court put the final nail into the coffin of the case. It did so in spectacular manner, not even adjourning for Judgment but instead delivering a short judgment with full reasons to be given later.

I never expected the case to go otherwise.

As a matter of fact, based on my deep knowledge of Nigeria, and a little bit of the law gleaned from some neutral friends skilled in such matters, I knew the case would eventually run into a cul-de-sac. In series of tweets, I had pleaded with the Wazirin Adamawa to concede defeat immediately after the election and leave the fight to God to fight on his behalf. Personally, I did not see the recent Presidential election as a credible one and I said so publicly. The elections were over-militarised and many voters were disenfranchised. The results declared in some areas clearly left much to be desired, recording nearly 100 percent turnout in particular instances. Prior to the elections, it was obvious that the ruling government was not going to be as generous and charitable as former President Goodluck Jonathan. There were clear indications that the government was willing and ready to compromise and control the INEC, the Judiciary, the Police, the Military and any of the other appurtenances of coercion and power.

The results that were declared dripped of abracadabra. It was like telling Nigerians to go to hell. The government understood the weakness and inherent nature of Nigerians, which is timidity. We do not have the courage or resilience of the people of Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Hong Kong and others. The few who take the risks often discover that they are on their own even before the chips are down. They are often dumped and discarded and deserted at the earliest sight of any resistance by the government. They are made to carry their own cross and the hero soon becomes the villain. This should not be the case, but that is a matter for another time.

This show of timorousness didn’t start in 2019, but began long ago. Most of those who died for Nigeria did so in vain, sorry for my brutal frankness but that is the sad truth. As soon as Buhari was declared by INEC as winner, I knew the game was over and no Jupiter was going to reverse that verdict. Naturally, it was a sad day for Atiku and his supporters, of which I am proud to say that I was an avowed member on this occasion. It was certainly a sad day for democracy in our land. We would not have minded if Atiku had lost a patently free and fair election. Nevertheless, and notwithstanding my strong misgivings, as a true and consummate Democrat, I was ready to accept the will of God. For me, as much as vox populi, vox Dei, so also vox Dei, vox populi – as much as it is said that the will of the people is the will of God which is the basis of democracy, more so is the will of God, the will of the people. Who are we to question the almighty?

In line with my view that man proposes and God disposes, I suggested to Atiku to accept defeat and congratulate Buhari. However, I stated further that this should not debar his party from going to court to seek redress. All hell broke loose, as usual, once this suggestion hit the airwaves. The so-called social media experts descended on me like a ton of bricks. For them, what I suggested was sheer humbug and pure heresy. If abuses alone could change a hopeless government for the better, Nigeria would have become the best country on planet earth. The intolerance and rudeness of some of our friends is incredible. They know it all and will not stomach any other views. But I saw beyond what they were seeing.

My explanation that Atiku needed to gain something out of nothing fell on deaf ears. And what did I wish for him? It was nothing other than statesmanship. But statesmanship comes at a huge price and sacrifice. It would not be easy, just remember the 27 years The Madiba, Nelson Mandela spent in prison before becoming the world’s greatest statesman. Those who would never contribute anything meaningful became the all-knowing advisers. They told Atiku he must fight all the way and to the death. This is akin to the kind of impractical pledge made by the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to deliver Brexit on 31 October 2019 or die in the ditch. As it is that day has come and gone and Mr Johnson simply ditched his pledge. He did not as much as move near even a drain not to mention a ditch! This was my reason for giving my timely admonition to Atiku. One must never burn all their bridges especially where the high stakes of politics is involved. I preferred his party to fight on instead. That’s their responsibility. Atiku should have detached himself at that stage, as simple as that. He and his Vice Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, my dear friend, who enjoys my highest regards, should have stayed in the background and watched from the side-lines.

I knew how much the elections had taken its toll on them. They and their key supporters were harassed and blocked, here and there. They were hounded and arrested. It was like tying the hands and legs of a boxer in the ring while his opponent was free to throw heavy punches. Lord have mercy! Atiku and Obi suffered. They were oppressed and pummelled. But I knew going to court was going to compound their trauma. It was like throwing away the possibility of an honourable and distinguished points or majority decision for the humiliation of a technical knockout or straight knockout. There are times you must leave vengeance to God. In God’s time, everything will fall in place. After such a gallant fight, they should have retreated and hand over their battle to the greater one who giveth and taketh.

The pain of watching them go from court to court was unbearable for me. The temporary owners of the land had ensured a monumental blockade. The road led nowhere. It was virtually impossible for any court to reverse a Presidential election, in our unusual clime and circumstances. Even the law does not seem to be on the side of the loser in a Presidential election. The odds are truly stacked against such a person. This was the meat of the lecture delivered by the distinguished legal luminary, Chief Wole Olanipekun, at the University of Oxford, shortly after the elections.

Again, I didn’t need any power or gift of clairvoyance to know how the Supreme Court case would go, another dead end, a terminal one, and that was it. I expected our man to simply accept the final verdict, devoid of the stylish vituperation, and the veiled anger at the failure of the Supreme Court to declare him victorious. As for me and my house, once you decide to go to court, it is like a game of football. The moment the referee blows the final whistle, the game is over, even if you feel cheated and robbed by all the officials including the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Even now, at the end of the titanic battle fought through the Courts by the protagonist, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, I believe that he has failed to seize the initiative and the opportunity presented by the Supreme Court decision. His tirade and invective after the decision is not what I would expect of someone who aspires to be one of the world’s leading Statesmen.

His denigrating and disparaging remarks about the judiciary and the apex court in Nigeria was ill-advised. The judiciary is the last bastion of the people. Even though there may be faults here and there, it is clear that they have been doing their best in a particularly difficult terrain. They have virtually become the whipping boys and girls of the Executive and veritable lambs of God who must carry away the sins of the world. Like journalists, everyone expects the sacrifice their everything while we sit comfortably in our homes.

I am aware that many PDP candidates have either had their elections confirmed or their appeals against electoral losses upheld. It cannot be the case that when court decisions favour you, then you trumpet the great admiration and respect you have for the judiciary, but when you lose, you harshly criticise the same institution. This was a chance for Atiku to call for the reform of those institutions he found wanting without heaping blames and subliminal insults on those presently occupying those institutions.

I would have expected Atiku to borrow a leaf from the distinguished and well-respected world statesman, Albert Arnold Gore Jr, former Vice President of the United States, who fought a similar battle all the way to the US Supreme Court. On 12 December 2000, the US Supreme Court, by a split decision, 5-4, decided that recounting the Florida votes beyond 12 December 2000 was unconstitutional. This meant that Gore had lost Florida by a meagre 537 votes and would eventually lead him to losing to George W Bush Jr in the Electoral College by only 6 votes. Gore conceded the election to Bush the following day even though he strongly disapproved of the US Supreme Court decision. As he stated, “for the sake of our unity as a people and the strength of our democracy, I offer my concession.”. I know that Atiku is a democrat and patriot which he mentioned in his release but he should have spared the rod on the Justices. He must understand that ultimately, this is not about him and his ambition. It is a test of Nigeria’s fledgling democracy and the unity of its people for which he must stand up and be counted. God’s will is always done eventually and Nigeria shall rise again.

Having said all this, I must sign off by extending my sincere congratulations to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Mr Peter Obi on a good fight. The forces they battled were heavy and monumental. Atiku is a man and half, in my view. He is a case study in courage and confidence. May they and their families be blessed…

PoliticsDPR Recommends Valve-Fitted Tankers To Prevent Spillage And Oil Tanker Fire by EBMedia(op):
Following the recent trend of oil spillage from Tankers in the country and the fire outbreaks caused by it, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has recommended that petrol tankers should be fitted with valves to prevent spillage in event of a rollover, IgbereTV reports.

Acting Director, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Mr Rufai Shakur, said these at the 13th edition of the Oil Trading and Logistics (OTL Africa Downstream) Conference held in Lagos. The theme of the conference was: “Growth, Innovation and Technology.’

Shakur, who was represented by Mr Oluwole Akinyosoye, DPR Zonal Operations Controller, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Kwara and Osun States, said the recommendation were the fallout from the Agency’s recently concluded Annual General Meeting with its stakeholders.

DPR also said that Nigeria should revert to the use of 33,000 litres maximum capacity for tankers instead of the 45,000 litres currently being conveyed by majority of the trucks.

He said the DPR was concerned about the frequency of tanker accidents across Nigeria, stressing that this could be as a result of the high volume of fuel being conveyed by the trucks. He said that apart from endangering lives and properties, over-laden tankers also endanger the lifespan of Nigerian roads. “It was also recommended that all petrol tankers should be fitted with valves that would prevent spillage in event of a rollover.

He said, “Think of it, if we had that, the recent inferno at Onitsha, arising from spillage from a petroleum taker would not have happened. “The 2018 incident on Otedola Bridge and many other fire incidents consequent on truck rollover might also have been averted’’, Shakur said. He said it was safer and more efficient to use rail and pipelines for transporting of petroleum products. He noted that this was however being hampered by activities of vandals which needed to be tackled using modern technology.

Also Shakur, while commending the organisers of the conference, said the DPR would continue to support initiatives that would improve operations in the downstream sector. Earlier, Mr Alex Egbona, Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum (Downstream Sector), said the sector was very crucial to ordinary Nigerians due to its impact on their daily lives. Egbona said the committee had charged the Minister of State for Petroleum, Mr Timipre Sylva, during his recent budget defence, to ensure that all refineries were working optimally within the next four years. He said the lawmakers were also planning to hold town hall meetings with critical stakeholders in the Niger Delta to put an end the vandalism of oil pipeline and oil theft.

SportsGuardiola: The Moment I Saw Messi, I Knew Barca Would Win Everything by EBMedia(op):
IgbereTV reports that former Barcelona head coach Pep Guardiola said that, as soon as he saw Lionel Messi play for the first time, he knew the club would ‘win everything’. Guardiola who is currently the Manchester City boss oversaw 247 games at Barcelona, winning La Liga three times, the Copa del Rey twice and two Champions Leagues, among other silverware.

It was Guardiola’s that made Messi a false-nine and the player soon started to perform excellently.

He said, “I had already been told by someone from the squad that there was a very good player in the squad. They told me that he was very young but scored many goals and he was very good."

On his first contact with Messi, Guardiola told Catalunya Radio, “I did not know him and one day I saw him and his father at a Nike store. I saw him, he looked small and shy and I thought: ‘Is this one as good as they say?’ “We started pre-season in Scotland, we won 6-1, 5-0 and he would score three goals a game for you. I thought that, with him, we would win everything.”
