PoliticsFG To Support Onitsha Fire Victims by EBMedia(op): 2:57pm On Oct 19, 2019
Igberetv reports that the Federal Government has assured victims of Wednesday’s fire incident at the Ochanja Market, Onitsha in Anambra, of its support towards ameliorating their plight.

The government made this known through the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Umar-Farouq, who gave the assurance on Friday in Onitsha when she visited the market to see the level of damages.

She said “We are here on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari, who directed that the ministry should come and condole the government and people of Anambra, especially the Ochanja Market traders mostly affected by the fire incident. I came here with sadness and utmost priority. Billions of naira have been lost by this fire incident. I have directed the acting Director-General of NEMA to immediately send relief materials through the South East zonal office to the affected victims of the incident."

The minister also interacted with some of the victims of the fire and further assured that the ministry would work closely with the state to see how they could prevent further occurrence.

She say: “A joint committee made up of Federal and State governments will come later to assess the level of damage with a view to forestalling future incidents of fire outbreaks."

She revealed that part of the assessment would focus on prevention and mitigation aspect of disaster and response to forestall future occurrences.

Chief Primus Odili, the Chief of Staff to Gov. Willie Obiano, who took the minister around the market commended the quick response of the Federal Government to the disaster.

He used the opportunity to requested for fire trucks from Federal Government to help combat such incidences in future.

He said: “The people of Anambra are happy that the President within 24 hours was able to deploy people that came to assess the extent of damage and to give orders that relief materials be sent down to our people. What happened touched the heartbeat of trade and commerce in the South East; we are asking the Federal Government to also come to our aid in terms of fire trucks."

“We have about 20 fire trucks. About four of them came for the rescue operation. Early this morning, we had a similar incident at Nkpor (near Onitsha) and about six fire trucks were deployed within minutes, which is why we are not talking about serious damage."

He also said: “We are soliciting fire trucks; at the Ochanja Market, we need at least three. You saw how congested that market is, so we need high powered fire trucks that can deal with such fire disasters as we saw on Wednesday."

Also Chairman of one of the affected plazas in the market, Chief Ndubisi Onuoha, commended President Buhari for condoling with them. He also prayed that the promises of the Federal Government should not be diverted by anybody.

PoliticsIs the N10 Billion Refund Going To Be Used For Election Rigging in Kogi ? by EBMedia(op):
Just few weeks to the Kogi State governorship election, Igberetv reports that some opposition groups and organizations have hinted that the APC plans to rig the Nov. 16 governorship election in Kogi State following President Buhari's seeking of the Senate's approval on the issuance of N10bn to Kogi State which is said to be a refund for money used to execute federal projects on behalf of the federal government.

Yahaya Bello of the APC and Engr. Musa Of the PDP are the main contenders of the governor's seat in Kogi State.

The Senate has been advised not to grant the request, or at least make sure that the fund is used judiciously for the purpose it is being sought.

Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, President, Centre for Change, said that the lawmakers must as a matter of patriotism, verify the projects claimed to have been executed for which an approval of refund is now being sought.

She said: “I am sure the President must have attached the purpose the money is meant for and it behoves on the Senate to do due diligence and ensure the funds are approved subject to its verification of the projects. And except it’s about life and death, the approval can be delayed till after the elections to allay fears of the money being used to influence the electoral process.”

Also, Suraju Olanrewaju, chairman of the Human and Environmental Development Agenda, HEDA Resource Centre, who says regardless of the motive; the legislators should stay until the November 16 governorship polls hold to allay fears of partisanship.

Speaking on the issue, the HEDA boss challenged the lawmakers to protect the independence of the legislature by standing with the people on the sensitive issue.

“I will implore the National Assembly, if truly independent, to reject that payment. Even if it’s for other purposes, the timing is wrong and unacceptable. Intention is not enough in this circumstance and politics. The Senate should convince the general public of its independence, as expected of the constitution and act like a respected arm of government, in this particular case.”

But a member of the APC 2019 Presidential Campaign Organization, Haruna Abdullahi advised those reading ulterior motives to the N10 billion refunds to insist on accountability in the use of the huge sum rather than kicking against the request because of the proximity to elections.

He said, “election or no election, a state must exist. Whatever is accrued to any state and has all constitutional provisions should be given. The caveat, therefore, is that all critical stakeholders must ensure the money is judiciously spent for the purposes it’s meant for. Election should not hinder public expenditure.”

The PDP national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan who incidentally hails from the state said that the mere thought of approaching federal lawmakers to give a nod of approval of more funds to the Kogi state government is an indication that President Buhari is indifferent to the plight of the people of the state. The publicity scribe also made his mind known. He said, “This approval has shown that Mr President is not concerned about the fate that has befallen the people of Kogi state in the last four years. It also presupposes that President Buhari supports the profligate lifestyle of Governor Yahaya Bello. Mr. President cannot say he is not aware of the fact that in spite of the huge approvals and collection of funds by Bello, he has built nothing in Kogi State.”

PoliticsWorld Food Day: Nigeria Now Has Enough Food - Agric Ministry by EBMedia(op): 10:20pm On Oct 17, 2019
Igberetv reports that Dr. Maimuna Habib, the Director, Projects Coordinating Unit at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, , has said that Nigeria has attained food sufficiency.

The directior said this in an interview on Thursday in Abuja as Nigeria commemorates the World Food Day.

She said: ”We have attained food sufficiency; all we need to do is to blow our trumpet because no foreigner will tell anybody what is happening in the country. Looking at all that is happening in agricultural sector, we have gone into value addition of all our commodities from the North to the South, all over the country we have added value to all our products,”

“Most of the farmers are women and youths, we have trained them, we have empowered them and they are happy.”

Habib said that the border closure is the best step the government can take to achieve food sufficiency. She said that the citizenry now eat what the people produce and that the country’s food is healthier.

“When we bring imported food into the country our own foods go nowhere, there is no market for us but now there is market, farmers are making more money.

“I am a farmer and I know how much I sold my maize and cowpea seeds recently,” she said.

Speaking on the high prices of goods, she stated that it was expected to be so as the border is closed, but in a short time prices would soon come down.

“The prices will soon crash, it’s just because people are feeling we do not have enough food to have closed the border, but we have enough food in the country."

PoliticsNgige: Government Cannot Shut Down Because It Wants To Pay Workers' Wages. by EBMedia(op):
Igberetv reports that on Tuesday, the Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige, said that Government cannot meet the demand of Labour in the new minimum wage regime.

Ngige said this as he addressed the members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), led by its National President, Ibrahim Khaleel, in Abuja

He said that the Nigerian economy will be crippled like that of Venezuela, if the government agree to grant the request of the labour Union.

There has been disagreement over the percentage to be paid to senior workers as the Federal Government paid the N30,000 minimum wage to workers in Grade Level 1 to 6.

He also said that about 1.4 million workers in federal public service would take 33 per cent of government budget in 2020, should Labour’s demand be accepted.

He said that if all the demands were met government would be left with no money to carry out other projects such as building roads, airports, rails, health centres and schools, if government should spend 33 per cent of the 2020 budget to pay salaries and wages.

He said: The government cannot shut down because it wants to pay workers' wages. He explained that the 2020 Budget of N10.3 trillion has N3.8 trillion as personnel cost without overhead. If you add running cost and other incidental costs, the total recurrent budget as presented to the National Assembly has taken 76 per cent. Where do we get the money to build roads, airport, rails, health centres, schools etc.

But, after talks yesterday, both the government and Labour shifted grounds in their positions on the implementation of the new wage.

The negotiations will continue on Wednesday in Abuja.

PoliticsUgwuanyi:Significance Of Good Governance Awards By The Sun, Vanguard, Leadership by EBMedia(op):
Ugwuanyi: Significance of The Good Governance Awards by The Sun, Vanguard, Leadership, Independent

By: Ugochukwu Ebuka Nweke

Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has been honoured with the award of good governance in the health sector by the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu campus.

This award does not come as a surprise as Governor Ugwuanyi is an unusual governor. Everything about him is different. His pace of work is phenomenal and his style is unconventional. He likes to be different. That is why he fondly referred to by the name – GBURUGBURU (which reflects his all-round greatness). He is one Chief Executive that does not take No for an answer. He believes the state has lost a lot of time and it needs to catch up fast. That is why he is in a hurry to achieve. And all his aides know this. That is why they have also become frenetic in their pace. Since he came in, all he has been doing is to find lasting solutions to the challenges facing the state.

Politically, he has been remarkably active and forthright. The Governor has continued to impress all with the strength of his commitment to selfless service, diligence, sincerity and tirelessness in all the workings of his administration. The strings of awards that have trailed the life of this good-natured leader are eloquent testimonies to all that has been said about him. He is indeed a quintessential politician with a vision, mission and passion.

Above all, Governor Ugwuanyi is a realist and a goal-getter, an amiable personality and of course a dynamic and pragmatic Governor of the people. At the risk of sounding immodest, there is no single serving governor that can contend with Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. Though with several verifiable reasons why he should fail, Governor Ugwuanyi chose the path of success–because that is what he promised the good people of Enugu State.

Today, Governor Ugwuanyi has proved the Enugu people right. He has lived up to their expectations through consistent initiation and execution of pro-people projects and programmes. Everywhere you turn in Enugu State, you see projects. The Ugwuanyi administration has ensured that governance gets a human face. Governance has come to live with the people and the people are glad.

Most importantly, the world has noticed. In a country where governors are certified authors of excuses of why they are entitled to fail, everyone is eager to celebrate Ugwuanyi, a proven performer. Everyone is eager to cite Ugwuanyi as an example, worthy of recognition and celebration. Everyone is asking the question; where is Ugwuanyi getting the resources to perform.

Within a short period, Governor Ugwuanyi by his leadership style which is result-driven, has proven that leading a state without much resources is not rocket science as some of his colleagues have made Nigerians believe. He has become a governor of many feats and firsts. His popularity has soared and testimonies of his goodness and sterling performance in office abound within and outside the state. Among the workers, pensioners, security agents, religious leaders, artisans, residents, visitors and others, Governor Ugwuanyi’s government is popular and acceptable, because of its good governance and people-oriented programmes.

It is pertinent to also mention that four national dailies-The Sun, Independent, Vanguard and Leadership, independently found GovernorUgwuanyi worthy of honour with different unprecedented awards at the same time, after painstaking assessments.

Even in the face of his remarkable performance in office and the myriad of accolades that have continued to trail Governor Ugwuanyi ; he has never been carried away, rather he has remained humble and focused on his job. This is one among many other reasons that has made him the model Governor that fully understands the components of leadership as it pertains to the 21st century.

Nweke writes from Enugu

PoliticsShoot Anyone Who Blocks My Convoy -- Ebonyi State Governor by EBMedia(op):
The governor of Ebonyi State, South-east Nigeria, David Umahi, has ordered his security details to shoot anyone who blocks his convoy, Igberetv reports.

Even if such gunshot results to death, Mr Umahi said, it is still within the law. Governor Umahi gave this order on Saturday while narrating how his convoy was blocked the previous night by mourners at a wake-keep in the state.

The governor’s convoy was reportedly blocked along Onicha Road in Onicha Local Government Area of the State on his way back to the state capital from his Uburu, Ohaozara hometown Friday night.

He alleged that one of his security aides lost his military rifle in the incident. While receiving some guests at the State Executive Chambers in Abakaliki on Saturday, the governor expressed his fury over the incident, saying it is a criminal breach of the law.

He narrated: “Yesterday night, I was coming back by 12 midnight. Of course, I had to stop over at the college to inspect projects, but when we got to Onicha, they blocked the road.

“Even with the litany of army and the police and everything, they did not even want to open the road. Then I said they should arrest all of them, but most of them ran away. I think they even took a gun of an army officer,”.

The Governor further said that those who ran away would still be arrested and imprisoned.

“So the Chairman of the Local Government, the House of Assembly members and coordinators, they are working very hard and the SSA on Security, they are all there to sort it out.

“But I say, all of them will go to prison. So they have to identify them, bring them here and we will prosecute them to show an example,” he said.

Shoot, even to kill to forestall anyone from blocking his convoy in the future, even if like the mourners, they are not armed, Mr Umahi said such persons should be shot.

“Next time the ADC should order for a shoot. It is very illegal to block the governor. And if anybody is killed in the course of that, it is allowed in the law.

“And it is not me that is the problem, it is the common man, nobody should be oppressed…,” the governor said.

The governor also announced a ban on wake-keep extending beyond 10 p.m. in the state.

“And I want it to be announced that henceforth, no wake-keep should go past10 p.m. If you must pass 10 p.m., take written permission from the chairman of the local government, and both the chairman and the person that requested will be held responsible if any problem occurs.

PoliticsEnugu School Receives Fg's Educational Award (photos) by EBMedia(op): 7:54am On Oct 06, 2019
Model Secondary School, Nsukka, in Enugu State, on Saturday, emerged the 5th best school in public category for 2019 President's Teachers & Schools Excellence Award (PTSEA) of the Federal Ministry of Education, Igberetv reports

The prestigious national award, which was conferred on the school at the Eagle Square, Abuja, by the Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, was sequel to the general assessment of infrastructure, E-Library, quality teaching & learning in public secondary schools in Nigeria by the Federal Ministry of Education.

The outstanding feat, according to the Executive Chairman of Enugu State Post Primary Schools Management Board (PPSMB), Barr. Nestor Ezeme, who received the award on behalf of the school, was a fallout from various educational interventions by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi's administration, which ensured the overhaul of all classroom blocks at Model Secondary School, Nsukka, construction of dormitories and dining hall with state-of-the-art facilities”.

Other pivotal interventions, according to him, include “installation of ICT/E-Library through the works department of the Post Primary Schools Management Board (PPSMB) and recruitment and training of quality teachers, leading to excellent performance of the school's JSS3 and SS3 students in junior and senior WAEC, respectively, among others”. Other members of the state government’s delegation include the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Nwanneka Onah, Principal of the School, Mr. Ezugwuorie and the Senior Prefect.
