Mr Olamilekan Adegbite, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development on Sunday said that President Muhammadu Buhari has given a marching order to his ministry for the completion of Ajaokuta Steel Company.

Adegbite disclosed this in Abuja during an interactive session with newsmen on the proposed Nigerian solid minerals downstream workshop scheduled to hold Dec. 2.

IgbereTV reports that the minister who spoke through his Special Adviser on Special Duty, Mr Sunny Ekozin said the ministry had been working ’round the clock to actualise the ‘presidential directives’.

“For the past three months, we have been doing everything possible to ensure we make progress and we are happy to let the nation know that the president has given us full backing in this assignment.

“The support given by the president include political backing to ensure that Ajaokuta works and by the grace of God it will work soon,” he said.

The minister also said part of the directives by Buhari was for the sector to solve long intractable problems bedeviling the solid minerals and to ensure Nigeria could rely on the sector to diversify its economy.

He said after articulating the problems for the past three months, the administration was on the path to harnessing the potential that abound in the minerals sector for the benefit of the people in the country.

Adegbite explained that one of the steps taken was the current process of developing the Nigerian Downstream Mineral Policy.

According to him, the policy is first of its kind in the history of the country.

“The downstream mineral policy will trigger the nation with a clear diversification blue print in a sustainable manner, especially for the revamping of Ajaokuta steel company.

“And also effective harnessing of the abundant minerals endowment spread across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“As part of the process leading to the revamping of the entire solid minerals sector, we are sensitising key stakeholders, especially large investors of this novel initiative for the development of solid mineral downstream value chains.

“This will help to create massive jobs, wealth and industrialisation.

Adegbite added that the ministry was determined and committed to ensuring that the president’s mandate was realised within the next three years.

He said that the present government would stem the exports of jobs and wealth by unwittingly exporting 35 million of unprocessed mineral products annually.

The minister pledged to open the sector to genuine indigenous and foreign investors to actively participate in the downstream licensing of mineral plants.

IgbereTV reports that Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State on Sunday warned that things may be tougher in the state.

Bello called for structural adjustment in governance to boost economic growth and development in the state.

The governor said this in a statement signed by Mrs Mary Berje, his Chief Press Secretary.

He added that the future would be tougher than it is, hence the need for structural adjustment and financial prudence.

According to him, “The future is looking very bleak financially and things will be tougher.

According to him, the state must work towards moving away from over-reliance on Federal Government Allocation and device other means of generating finance.

Bello further encouraged all government officials to block all leakages in the system so as to improve the state’s finances.

The statement reads in part: “We need to block leakages, and we must do some structural adjustments to survive the challenges of the future and the only solution is to move away from dependence on Federal allocations.

“This is to enable us increase our internally generated revenue so that federal allocation becomes just an augmentation. Our main revenue should come from what we generate internally and what we get as FAAC should be an augmentation.

“We must change the narrative because we must survive. We must move our system from basically a publicly reliance system into a private sector system.”

He called on the commissioners as well as other government officials to ensure proper execution of government policies and projects, urging them to imbibe ethical practices of honesty in the discharge of their duties.

The governor added that both the permanent secretaries and the directors in the state would undergo retreat as they play a critical role in policy formulation and implementation.

The organisers of the planned academic conference on witchcraft planned for Nsukka next week are looking for another venue after the University of Nigeria withdrew the approval for the use of its Energy Centre.

The director of the centre wrote conference organisers withdrawing the approval, amidst the opposition by Christian students and the Christian Association of Nigeria against the conference.

The conference, initially scheduled for 28-31 October is the brainchild of the B.I.C Ijomah Centre for Policy and Research and is expected to hold between November 26 and November 27. It is a pure academic exercise, not a real meeting of witches and wizards, the centre said, shocked by the uninformed reaction of Christian students and CAN.

Posters pasted by Christian students on the campus decried the conference. The posters bear the messages: “Say No to the meeting of witches and wizards!!! We are (a) Christian community. Don’t pollute our environment please!” “University of Nigeria belongs to Jesus. So witches and wizards, No way!! No Vacancy!!!” “We plead the blood of Jesus over the University of Nigeria. Hence we reject all forms of witchcraft overtly or covertly in Jesus’ Name, Amen”.

Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, also urged members to pray to avert the conference ever holding.

Chairman of CAN in the South-East zone, Bishop Dr Goddy Okafor is concerned about the conference and has demanded that the programme be called off immediately.

Okafor said, “I call on all Heads of Blocks, State Chairmen and other Stakeholders of Christian Association of Nigeria South-East Zone to take up aggressive prayers against the planned convention of Witches and Wizards slated to hold on November 26 at UNN.

“This convention is not of God and must not hold in Jesus name. Exodus 22:18 says, ‘Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live’.

“I hereby direct, all Christian Churches in South East of Nigeria to take up lamentation and pray against this evil movement in all our churches this coming Sunday.

IgbereTV reports that the Senate Committee Chairman on Power, Senator Gabriel Suswam, has advocated for establishment of mini-grid power station as solution to perennial epileptic power supply in Nigeria.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja at a workshop organised for lawmakers of the upper and lower legislative Chambers, Suswam lamented that the unbundling of power in the past by government hasn’t yielded any positive result in power sector.

He reiterated Senate’s resolve in assisting government to improve power supply in Nigeria.

“The Senate would do all it can to assist the executive arm of government in solving the epileptic nature of power supply in the country.

The lawmaker representing Benue North East and former Governor of Benue State, urged Nigerians with enough funds to invest in mini grid power stations which he says can go a long in reducing the electricity crisis in the country.

He lamented that after several billions of dollars spent in the power sector, a “country as huge and populated as Nigeria still grapples with 3500 megawatts of electricity.”

“Senate will ensure that at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity is added to the national grid by 2022.”

Suswam, who believes constant electricity will cut down the high rate of unemployment in the country, said the capacity building workshop is meant to give the lawmakers basic knowledge of the power sector in order for them to take informed decisions.

IgbereTV reports that Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, the lawmaker representing Niger North Senatorial District and the Deputy Chief Whip has disclosed that he's been receiving threatening messages since the hate speech bill he sponsored passed its first reading.

Recall that Senator Abdullahi proposed a National Commission for the Prohibition of Hate Speech Bill and death by hanging as punishment for hate speeches.

The Niger Senator who stated that he won't shy away from his responsibility because of the threats, added that the bill was not passed in the eight Senate because he left it alone at that time because the political atmosphere was already getting charged at its first reading.

“Like somebody wrote to me, over the past ten days or so since the bill was read for the first time, I have received all kinds of messages some even including threats. But I am not bothered about that. In all of these, if I receive one commendation, it gladdens my heart and I did receive many commendations and one stood out and said there is so much hate in this country. We must check it.

“If you meet those who have lost their loved ones arising from religious or ethnicity, intolerance, and the like, I don’t think they will be smiling with you when you tell them hate speech is nonsense or does not exist. They have felt, seen and are living as victims of hate speech,” he said.

“I reckon in my thinking that the atmosphere was not right for even debating the subject matter because, at the end of the day, we will be missing the point. So I did not pursue it.

“On assessing the reason why I introduced the bill in the 8th senate in the first instance, I have seen that these reasons are not abated. If anything, they are actually assuming a life of their own. So I decided that this bill be reintroduced and it was on the 12th of this month.

“They will demonise me, I am not moved because this is the subject of life and no one buys life in the market. Nobody came with a spare" Abdullahi added.

IgbereTV reports that, a man known as Iniobong Okon Moses of Ikot Amupe Obio Offot, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State who allegedly defiled his two-year-old step daughter said he committed the act thinking that it was with his wife.

Iniobong revealed this when he was paraded in the police command headquarters, Ikot-Akpanabia alongside other suspects allegedly involved in incest and rape.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, SP Odiko Macdon, while briefing the press on Friday over the activities of sexual predators in the state said Iniobong forcefully defiled the two year old while carrying her on his laps.

Macdon noted that the forceful penetration caused the victim to sustain serious injuries, which made her bled profusely, adding that the girl has been taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

The suspect in an interrogation by newsmen, confessed to the crime and narrated how he came back from a vigil, drunk, grabbed his two-year-old step daughter thinking that she was his wife and had carnal knowledge of her.

He added that it was at the middle of the act that his wife nabbed him as she suddenly entered inside the house adding that the wife thereafter reported him to FEYrep- Family Empowerment Youths reorientation programme, a pet project of the wife of the governor, Dr. Mrs Martha Emmanuel.

The suspect said, “I no know wetin come over me, that night as I come back from vigil, I took ogogoro, and I no know wetin I dey do. I carry my wife daughter which she get from another marriage and I think say na my wife, I come dey do am.”

He continued, “As I come dey do am, my wife enter from no where, catch me red-handed, come carry me report give FEYrep. I don beg am, but e no gree! even though e no say e born pikin for me three months ago.”

Also, the command paraded one Anwanga Essien Udo aged 33 residing at No. 7 Itiam street in Uyo, for defiling his 10 year old step daughter when she was left alone with him.

It was gathered that the suspect who is a pastor with the Restoration Bible Church, Uyo had deceived the mother of the victim to abandon her husband and live with him (pastor).

The 10-year-old victim, who spoke with our correspondent said, “that night, the uncle said he would rub me and my sister cream after taking our bath, when he finished with my sister who is six, he forced her to sleep and when he finished rubbing me cream, I wanted to go and lie down with my sister but he refused and said I must sleep in his room.

“I watched him undressed, started touching me all over, I was crying, begging him, but he didn’t listen, he finally did it. My sister later woke up, and started crying too. The uncle flogged her for crying and was telling neighbors that she flogged us because we pee on the bed. When i went to my grandmother’s place, i told her everything that happened.”

The grandmother to the victim, however, alerted FEYrep and got the suspect arrested.

Meanwhile, the police command said it had declared war against sexual predators and other vices in the state and warned perpetrators to desist or face the wrath of the law. Police also urged parents to report any form of sexual harassment noticed on their children to police or any law enforcement agency.

The Social Democratic Party, SDP, governorship candidate in Kogi State, Natasha Akpoti, has accused soldiers of electoral malpractice, IgbereTV reports.

Akpoti alleged that soldiers chased electorates away at the Kuroko 2 polling unit in Adavi Local Government Area of the state while allowing agents of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to rig freely.

She raised the alarm in a tweet, on Saturday.
