IgbereTV reports that former Nigeria Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has expressed concern over the excessive borrowing by the Nigerian government and its disastrous consequences. Read below as shared by Atiku: John Quincy Adams once said “there are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation. One is by the sword. The other is by debt.” He may have very well been referring to Nigeria of the last three years. Barely two weeks ago, I warned during my Founder’s Day lecture at the American University of Nigeria, Yola, that Nigeria had taken almost as much foreign debt in the last three years, as she had taken in the thirty years before 2015 combined. Now that is frightening. And very true. Frightening, not just because of the amount, but because after such unprecedented borrowing, we have emerged as the world headquarters for extreme poverty and the global capital for out of school children. It begs the question: what were the funds used for? I have said it time and again. The business of government is too serious to be left in the hands of politicians. We must all ask questions because if they throw away the future, it is not going to be their future they are throwing away, it will be all our futures. The fact that Nigeria currently budgets more money for debt servicing (₦2.7 trillion), than we do on capital expenditure (₦2.4 trillion) is already an indicator that we have borrowed more money than we can afford to borrow. And the thing is that debt servicing is not debt repayment. Debt servicing just means that we are paying the barest minimum allowable by our creditors. And while spending 50% of our current revenue on debt servicing, this administration wants to take further loans of $29.6 billion! To say that this is irresponsible is itself an understatement. As a businessman, one of the very first things I learnt is that you do not take loans except you are expanding your business. Even as an individual, when your income cannot fund your lifestyle, you are challenged to grow your income, not your borrowings. Even if this administration borrows $1 trillion, it will never be enough because their challenge is one of capacity. They are not using the funds they already have wisely. They do not need more debt. They need more intellectual capacity. The money the Muhammadu Buhari administration wants to borrow to fund its Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) could be acquired without sinking the nation into further debt. All it requires is visionary leadership and business acumen. In my economic blueprint, I said that rather than turn in regular losses (which it has consistently been doing), the best thing to do with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation is to reform it. Of course, the administration’s paid propagandists went into overdrive, accusing me of planning to sell the NNPC to my friends. But just last week, Saudi Arabia’s ARAMCO, the most profitable company in the world, took that route and almost broke the global stock market with the most successful initial IPOs in world history, bar none. Ironically, Saudi Aramco raised $29.4 billion via this IPO. Just the amount this administration wants to borrow. That could have been Nigeria’s story, but for our failure of leadership. By reforming the NNPC, Nigeria can raise the $29.6 billion the Buhari regime wants to borrow, and we will raise the money without going into debt. If we had taken that route, not only would we have attracted Foreign Direct Investment into Nigeria, but even better than investment, we would have attracted confidence in our economy, because it would have shown that we have a thinking leadership. Take the example of the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas company. This is a joint venture between the Nigeria government and the private sector. Yet, while the NLNG declares very handsome profits, in billions of dollars every year, the NNPC declares loses! This is proof that the NLNG model works, and the NNPC model does not. Moody’s, the world’s preeminent rating agency, has just downgraded Nigeria. Ghana, a nation with only 15% of our population, now attracts more Foreign Direct Investment than Nigeria, and Rwanda, a country with less than 15% of our mineral endowment, has an economy that is growing at twice the rate of our economy. The problem is not revenue. The challenge is not Nigerians. The issue is leadership. While there is scant information in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework for what the loan would be used for, I could not help but read a communication from the Presidency to the effect that one of such projects would be the digitalisation of the Nigerian Television Authority and other similar projects. Spending revenue on such projects would be foolish, but spending loans in such a manner is nothing short of foolhardy. The Nigerian government does not have a good record of running businesses, and a public television network is unlikely to yield the type of income that would justify taking out loans to digitalise it. Besides, is that a priority, when we have 12 million children out of school? Like I said, capacity, not revenue, is the problem. And in proof of this, I offer the example of how this administration took delivery of $322 million Abacha loot in 2018 and claimed it shared it out to poor Nigerians, only to obtain a $328 million loan from China, allegedly for ICT development the very next month. How do you share out $322 million and then borrow $328 million? Who does that? At the risk of repeating myself, it is clear that no amount of money, whether from revenue or borrowings, will be enough for an administration that lacks capacity. So, what must Nigeria do now? Rather than profligate borrowing, what Nigeria needs to do is restore investor confidence in our economy. Key to that is respecting the independence of key institutions, such as the Judiciary and the Central Bank of Nigeria. Both of these institutions are now the captives of Buhari and his cabal, and though they are loathe to admit it, they cannot take one step without watching their backs. Why are foreign investors leaving Nigeria for Ghana? The answer is that Ghana, unlike Nigeria, has learnt how to divorce key institutions from politics. The Ghanaian central bank enjoys a degree of independence that our own CBN can only dream of under the prevailing atmosphere. You will not hear Ghana’s leaders give flippant interviews overseas about their plans for the cedi, as Buhari has done in Europe about the Naira. It rang alarm bells because it is not the job of the executive to interfere in the role of the reserve bank. Neither will you find Ghana’s leaders blatantly intimidating the judiciary by obviously setting up judges and invading courtrooms. Why would any investor come to Nigeria under such prevailing circumstances? Their thought would be that if they had industrial disputes, our courts, under this administration, could not be counted on to deliver impartial justice. I was part of a team that paid off Nigeria’s entire foreign debt. I, therefore, cannot sit and watch an administration without vision squander our children’s future by taking and wasting loans that they do not even have the capacity to utilise properly. Thank God for leaked memos that have exposed the lies this regime has told Nigerians about unprecedented revenues in the Federal Inland Revenue Service and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. Now, we know that Nigeria is not poor because she is not making enough money. The truth is that Nigeria is poor because she is not making the right leadership decisions. Thomas Jefferson said, “to preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt.” Dear citizens of our beloved nation, this is a call to heed. President Olusegun Obasanjo and I paid off this nation’s debt, and I will not stand idly by and watch while Nigeria is plunged into second slavery by those who only know how to reap where they have not sown. Our youth must have something better to inherit from us than unsustainable debt fuelled by insatiable greed. That is why I call on the Senate of the National Assembly to show loyalty to Nigeria and reconsider its decision with regards to approving Buhari’s $29.6 billion loan request. We need to pay heed to Benjamin Franklin’s advise that “he that goes a borrowing goes a sorrowing”. I call on Nigeria’s youth to identify the Senator representing their senatorial zones and write to them, urging them to vote against this request. Do this, because it is you and your children that will pay back these loans that would be squandered by this ravenous cabal who do not have the word enough in their vocabulary. http://igberetvnews.com/1198749/buharis-29-6bn-new-loan-endless-borrowing-will-lead-endless-sorrowing-atiku/

A Federal High Court in Abuja has asked the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) and the Director-General of the Department of State Service, Yusuf Bichi, to explain the reason for the continued detention of Omoyele Sowore. Femi Falana (SAN), on behalf of Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow, had filled a motion ex-parte asking the court to order Sowore's unconditional release from the custody of DSS on the grounds that he has been admitted to bail by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu since November 6. IgbereTV reports that Justice Inyang Ekwo who ruled in the motion ex-parte on Tuesday, said it would be unfair to deliver ruling on the matter without hearing from the other parties. The judge, who adjourned the hearing on the case until December 23, ordered the applicant to put the respondents on notice. The judge ordered the Deputy Chief Registrar (Litigation) of the court to bring the case and the next date of hearing to the notice and attention of the 1st & 2nd defendants. He also made an order remitting the file to the Chief Judge of the court for assignment of the case to a vacation judge for hearing on the next adjourned which falls within the court’s vacation period. Recall that the operatives of the DSS rearrested Sowore shortly after a court proceeding at the Federal High Court in Abuja on December 6, barely 24 hours of releasing him and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare, from custody. Following the uproar on the re-arrest, the AGF, on December 13, announced that his office had taken over the prosecution of Sowore, who was charged with the offence of treasonable felony. http://igberetvnews.com/1198393/court-orders-malami-dss-boss-explain-sowores-detention/

Former Imo governor, Sen. Rochas Okorocha has revealed that he chose to remain a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) because of his belief in the “philosophy and agenda” of the party, not minding the injustices meted out to him. He made this known after his suspension was lifted by the party’s national working committee, IgbereTV reports. He commended the committee for being fair to him. A statement released in the wake of the suspension by his special media adviser, Sam Onwuemeodo, said, “Okorocha has always been a very good party man and shall continue in that regard. He shall also continue to work committedly for the good of the Party and also join hands with other leaders of the Party to ensure that the party remains strong in Imo, grows rapidly in the South-East and consolidates at the national level.” http://igberetvnews.com/1197187/rochas-okorocha-remained-apc-philosophy-agenda/

IgbereTV reports that on Monday, the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, debunked recent Social Media reports that he was defrauded of the sum of N3.1 million by a Yahoo Boy who is currently being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The Minister, who said he neither knew nor transacted any business with the suspect that involved or would have led to his being swindled, explained that the amount being mentioned was the worth of Air Miles which the suspect derived from fraudulently hacking into his (Minister’s) internet account and creating a false identity with which he, among other benefits, bought first-class tickets to various parts of the world. Having persistently hacked into the accounts for over a period of six years, the suspect was tracked by the Minister until enough evidence was gathered which was then passed on to the security agencies. http://igberetvnews.com/1197176/fashola-yahoo-boy-hacked-account-six-years/

Stephen Rathod, the senior pastor of The Covenant Family Church in Oklahoma, USA, says Enoch Adeboye, the general overseer of The Redeemed Christian of God, donates 60% of his income to charity. IgbereTV reports that Rathod said this while speaking on Thursday which marked the fourth day of the 2019 annual Holy Ghost Congress at the Redemption Camp. “I have served for 40 years! I am Daddy GO’s host; I was his bag boy; I picked his bags and put them in his car. I was his driver, his dry cleaner, and his secretary – calling people, setting up meetings,” he said on Thursday night. Rathod was in the hotel room of Josiah Akindayomi, Redeemed’s founder, in Tulsa, where he announced Adeboye as his successor. “In the early 1980s, all the children who hang around the camp, they were rich kids. They all schooled in England, but my children stayed at home,” Rathod said, explaining the challenges Adeboye faced. “Every morning when we had family meetings – Mummy GO, Daddy GO, myself and the children, we cried and prayed. “And this is what the Lord said: Let us continue to live holy, let us continue to serve God for a day will come, my children will not only go to England they will go to all over the world! Look now, what the Lord has done!” Addressing the congregation, Adeboye spoke on the need for prayer. “There is casual prayer; the kind of prayer we pray when we are tired or when we are in a hurry,” he said. “There is regular prayer, called the Lord’s prayer in Mathew 6: 6- 13. That is the prayer most Christians pray. “Desperate prayer is the one used by people in desperate need for help. It doesn’t follow the protocol; it is urgent and intense. “Desperate prayer is forceful, violent and it is answered quickly. It arrests the attention of heaven; the attention of the one who never fails.” He narrated how he prayed for his life to be taken if he would be an ordinary pastor. “One night – I remember that night like yesterday – I prayed: “Father, I surrender all; it is only you now; that is all I want. I don’t want to be an ordinary pastor. “Please, I am not seeking anything else. Not seeking for gold, not seeking for clothes, not seeking for fame; I want you to empower me so I can do this work. And if you are not going to do it, take me away. “That day, He answered, and there was a tremor in the Camp. The tremor went as far as Ijebu Ode where pictures that hung on the walls were dropping.” Other guest ministers at the congress included Mercy Ezekiel, Felix Omobude, leader of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, S.K. Abiara and Wale Oke. http://igberetvnews.com/1194041/adeboye-donates-60-income-charity-pst-rathod/

IgbereTV reports that the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on Saturday evening spoke on issues concerning the Nigerian government and the agitation for Biafra. Kanu who spoke in a radio broadcast cited the continued insurgency and terrorism in the country which he attributed to the agenda of the Fulanis to fully islamise Nigeria and have full control over its people and resources. He said that ISIL and other terrorist group are gradually gaining entrance into the country because the Nigerian government supports terrorism which it uses to achieve the Fulani agenda. He also blasted the Nigeria News media houses for reporting as false, the discovery made by the IPOB about the Nigerian army secretly burying 71 Nigerian soldiers killed by the ISWAP Terrorist group. He said that the Fulanis are planning to keep Nigeria in bondage by preaching a deceptive unity. He went further to cite the present inequalities in wealth distribution which he said was a means the Fulanis are using to achieve the Fulani's goal of control of the whole country. He also said that all the policies of the government which includes political appointment, migration laws are centered on achieving the Fulani agenda. He said that Buhari is not alive and the government is fully hijacked by the cabals as can be evidenced by the recent quarrel between Aisha Buhari and Garba Shehu. According to Kanu, the Sultan of Sokoto owns 23 Oil Wells in Nigeria. He said the government is using the lack of electricity to impoverish the people of southern Nigeria. He spoke of Nigeria's lack of visionary leadership, as she still exports crude oil and imports petrol, with no plans to establish refineries. He equally said that some people from the marginalized parts of the country who are supposed to be supporting the Biafran cause are not doing so but are rather fighting against it. Such people include some leaders of Igbo groups and some governors from the south. He said that the agitation for Biafra will continue as Biafra and Nigeria are not meant to be together. He ended his address by stating that Nnia Nwodo, the president of Ohaneze Ndigbo will no longer be the leader of Ohanaeze after 31st December 2019. http://igberetvnews.com/1194019/nnamdi-kanu-nnia-nwodo-will-lose-position-sultan-23-oil-wells/

On Saturday, President Muhammadu Buhari urged universities in the country on the need for them to increase their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to enhance sustainable education. IgbereTV reports that Buhari stated this during the 44th convocation ceremony of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State. The President, who was represented by the Deputy Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Dr. Suleiman Raman-Yusuf, said the present administration had contributed a lot to the development of education in the country. According to him, the future of Nigeria lies in the mode and quality of education provided to the citizens, especially the youth, as they are the nation’s future. While reiterating that the government alone could not fund education, Buhari noted that in most developed countries, universities support their governments in the funding of education. He urged universities to contribute their quota to the current efforts to diversify the nation’s economy and create opportunities for economic growth. http://igberetvnews.com/1193995/president-buhari-urges-universities-increase-igr/

Geoffrey Oyeama, the Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Oyeama has decided to retrain and empower Enugu State public school through the Kwusike Foundation, IgbereTV reports. The Training Coordinator of the foundation, Mr Uche Gariel said this in an interview with journalists on Saturday, during a three days training of selected teachers in the state. Gabriel said that the training became necessary following the urgent need to equip the teachers with modern instructional techniques with a view to improving learning outcome. He said that the minister was worried by the seeming decay in the sector and had undertaken to conduct regular training for all public school teachers in the state. The coordinator said that participants at the training would in due time be equip with instructional kits like laptops and other relevant electronic instructional devices. He said the state government needed to be applauded for recruiting more teachers, adding that such efforts needed to be followed with a routine training and retraining exercises. According to him “It is this gap that Kwusike Foundation has come to fill. We see it as a challenge to make public schools better than what it is right now. “The quality of teaching determines the quality of students produced by the system because teachers can not give what they do not have,” he said. Gabriel said that the pilot phase of the training involved 50 teachers drawn from schools in the state capital. He said that the greatest investment any government could make was to give good education to its people, adding that the foundation was opened to collaborating with the state government to do more. Also, Director of School Services, Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), Mrs. Julie Ugwu commended the minister for sponsoring the training. Ugwu said that Onyeama by the gesture had shown himself to be a true Nigerian and lover of education. She said that the current administration in the state had employed over 2000 teachers, adding that the training would add value to what the teachers were doing. She said that the board was pleased with the intervention of the minister as such would improve the quality of education in the state. “Government can not do everything. That is why we encourage community involvement in the development of our schools,” Ugwu said. In her remarks, The facilitator of the training, Dr. Obiageli Nnamani, said that due to some reasons, public schools seemed to be the most disadvantaged in terms of quality manpower. Nnamani said that deliberate efforts needed to be made to prepare young school leavers to face the future with optimism. “The foundation is investing in public schools because they are the disadvantaged unlike the private schools that are putting in a lot of money to get results. “In the next 50 years, we will not be in the center stage and it is the children we have trained with what we have that will be leading us,” she said. Obiageli said that research had shown that most teachers had yet to grasp modern teaching techniques which necessitated the training. http://igberetvnews.com/1193987/onyeama-starts-training-public-school-teachers-enugu/

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has described the action of personnel of the Department of State Service, DSS, against the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, as a jungle behaviour, which should be condemned, IgbereTV reports. NUJ in a statement expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as unnecessary violation of the sanctity of the court. It said those behind the ugly development must be sanctioned. The union in a statement signed by its National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman, demanded an apology from the Federal Government for the dastardly conduct of the DSS. “The National Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) views the absurdities of the ongoing drama by Agents of the Department of Security Service with dissatisfaction and disenchantment, especially the unnecessary violation of the sanctity of the court and rearrest of Omoleye Sowore. “The NUJ had on several occasions initiated moves towards fostering safety of journalists and building synergy with agents of the state but unfortunately, brutalization and impunity by security agents still pervade. “There is indeed an overriding need and urgency to promote the safety of journalists and fight impunity against them, in order to create the enabling environment they require to optimally perform their fundamental functions in a democracy. “We condemn in its totality the conduct of the DSS and call for disciplinary measures against whosoever authorized that jungle behaviour of the DSS Operatives. “And demand for an unqualified apology from the Federal Government for the dastardly conduct of the DSS and an assurance that such an unwholesome conduct will not repeat itself again. “We are afraid that such brazen acts only remind us of totalitarian regimes and not genuine democracies of which the Buhari Administration prides itself of. “We equally note with alarm that such lack of respect for the law is gradually pushing the country into implosion. It is however not too late to make amends,” NUJ concluded. http://igberetvnews.com/1181819/sowore-vs-dss-nuj-condemns-dsss-conduct-call-sanction/

The Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has challenged lawmakers to make all the necessary sacrifice to make Nigeria better for future generations as they were elected at the most challenging time in the country, IgbereTV reports. He was quoted in an address at a retreat in Lagos organised by chairmen of the 105 House of Representatives Standing committees. “We have been elected at a time of great upheaval at home and abroad. We are confronted with great peril; oil prices have fallen and refuse to go back, our population growth continues to outpace economic growth, we are besieged on all sides by rising insecurity and its consequences. “Too many of our people have lost faith in the ability of government to meet them at the point of their needs; to protect them and to deliver the conditions that will allow them pursue and achieve for themselves, lives of accomplishment and peace,” he said. He said the lawmakers must make sacrifices that would free future generations of lawmakers and other Nigerians from the burden of providing daily living for millions who wouldn’t otherwise survive. “After all, it is you who are often called upon to intervene, to deliver resources for childbirth, and school fees, to pay for funerals and provide for daily upkeep,” Gbajabiamila said. The Speaker enjoined them to be more committed to deliver on their mandates toward building an attractive economy that will attract investment to create jobs that will meet Nigerians’ present needs and grow to meet future demands. “How do we build a society where the weak are not afflicted by the powerful, where our differences of gender, tribe and religion and opinion are not weaponized to deprive any citizen of life, of liberty or the freedom to pursue happiness? “How do we achieve the promise of greatness that for so long ago caused the world to look upon us and say, here comes the giant of Africa?” he said. http://igberetvnews.com/1181764/elected-challenging-time-gbajabiamila/

Lauretta Onochie said that there was no evidence to show that DSS re-arrested Sowore as was reported. She said: WHO DRAMA EPP? EVERY LIE WILL EXPIRE. COURTROOM DRAMA EXPLAINED. So it was a stage managed drama in the court yesterday; Sowore pinned down by his supporters in a courtroom in order to give DSS a bad name. There was no gun. No batton. No pinning down. Just plain drama, planned and staged by his boys and girls. Kudos, but every lie has an expiration date. Many EYEWITNESSES have said DSS was OUTSIDE the courtroom, not inside the courtroom. Here's one more eyewitness account as reported by Adeniyi Adegbomire SAN- A friend of mine, Wale Fapohunda, who was in court today when Sowore's re-arrest was purportedly effected inside the courtroom has this to say about the incident: "Okay, so I was in court today and here is what happened. The court had adjourned his matter till 11th Feb next year. The court called the next matter and proceeding had commenced in respect of the next matter. Sowore stepped OUT OF THE COURT ROOM and suddenly we heard noises coming from the corridor "leave me alone" "they want to kill me" "they want to kill Sowore" and all that. Suddenly Sowore's people started dragging him with the DSS and they (Sowores team) dragged him into the court room. The judge seeing this, rose and went to her chambers. The DSS didn't enter the court room to arrest him rather his supporters dragged him in with the DSS official. Nobody chased the judge out, she rose and went to her chambers on seeing squabbles. The DSS official left the court room and waited for him outside the court. Thank you all. Behold my eye witness account". Blackmailing government enforcement agencies was how our nation went into decay. It wont work this time. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW. It appears everyone in that drama was part of the drama club. They harassed a Court officer who wanted them out as they were disrupting another court case. A Lawyer who looked bemused with the whole drama was lost for words. Drama has not helped Dino Melaye. It has not helped Olise Metuh. Drama has not helped Orji Uzo Kalu. Drama will not help Sowore because Once you dramatise a lie to the members of the public to attract sympathy, you lose all of that sympathy when they find out you have misled them. I'm also of the opinion that the police look into these videos, (I have watched four) and charge those who deliberately misled the general public on this issue. God bless Nigeria. IgbereTV reports that retired Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, His Eminence, Cardinal John Onaiyekan has declared that disintegration was not in the best interest of Nigeria. Onaiyekan spoke while delivering the convocation lecture, in commemoration of the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu. Onaiyekan spoke on the theme: “The Catholic Church in Education in Nigeria: Between Public and Private.” At the event were his successor, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Bishop Calistus Onaga, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Rev. Prof. Christian Anieke. Cardinal Onaiyekan, who acknowledged that there were many problems facing the country, said disintegration would not be an option. He said, “There is disturbing wind of pessimism blowing across our nation in our day, almost bordering on generalized despair. This is not good for any nation. “Long delayed and unfulfilled hopes are leading many to give up on the viability of the project called Nigeria. The proposal that we go our separate ways seems to me a gamble that may not be as simple as it appears.” He added that “building together a greater nation comes at a great cost, which we must all be ready to pay. I am quite convinced that those costs, high as they may be, are much less than what it will take for us to disintegrate. “Almost every aspect of our national life is calling for drastic and radical renewal. If we cannot tackle everything at once, may be we can start with education.” Onaiyekan said to push forward, “the arms of the Church must continue to be stretched out for collaboration with all other stakeholders, including and especially government.” He also advocated that private universities should be given freedom and space to flourish, noting that though supervision was necessary to prevent gross abuse, “strict control stifles initiatives and creativity.” He said in that regards, the Nigeria Universities Commission, NUC, should limit itself to public universities, “for which it was originally established.” He argued that it was obvious that the public universities were not models of excellence. “One can even say that the NUC really has no moral credentials to claim to direct every university in Nigeria if we are to judge from how well they have been running the government heavily-funded universities." “Some of the demands of the NUC are forcing unnecessary huge financial burden on private universities, translating to higher fees for students.” On Catholic Universities, he said there was the need for coordination and cooperation, stressing that “proliferation must not sacrifice quality for quantity.” http://igberetvnews.com/1181126/nigerias-disintegration-costly-cardinal-onaiyekan/
