Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has said his predecessor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, is a “total failure” who no longer has access to Aso Villa in Abuja, IGBERETV reports.

Speaking while commissioning a project in his state today September 12, Wike who has never hidden his dislike for Amaechi, said;

“This should be the last time that you (Amaechi) will talk about this state because you are a total failure as far as this state is concerned. A total failure. Even what is supposed to come to us, you blocked it but we didn’t bother.

You think you will not finish as a minister, you have left. I hear he can’t even enter Villa now. All those periods you intimidated police people, and army people are over. You use to tell them, ‘The President is angry with you’. Now, go and tell them''he said

Amaechi who was Rivers’s governor from May 2007 to May 2015 had on Saturday took a swipe at Wike at the funeral of a traditional ruler, Alabo Graham-Douglas, in the Akuku Toru Local Government Area of the state. The former minister had knocked Wike, who was absent at the funeral, saying he thought the state government would take responsibility for everything concerning the Kalabari chief and recognize him.

However, Wike in his reply today said he chose to stay away from the burial because it was politicized.

Many parts of the country are currently experiencing power outages as members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) commenced an indefinite industrial action today August 17, IGBERETV reports.

Members of the electricity union are protesting the nonpayment of outstanding arrears owed to former workers of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), suspension of conditions of service and career path for workers and the directive by the TCN board to conduct promotion interviews for acting principal managers who are moving to Assistant General Managers .

According to data from the Independent System Operation (ISO), a section of TCN, power generation on the grid was 4,149.40MW as of 6am from 21 power plants on Wednesday but drastically dropped to 1,635MW from 17 plants.

By 12 noon, the grid had crashed to 1,246.40MW as three power plants went off, and by 1pm, the grid dropped to 762.30MW with just 13 plants active. The peak generation achieved on Tuesday was 4,829MW.

Some of the transmission companies have taken to social media to inform their customers of the power cut due to the strike.

The striking workers have vowed not to resume work until all their demands are met by the Federal Government.

Throwback Video: Buhari Criticizes President Jonathan For Not Tackling ASUU Strike

As the strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other related organisations in tertiary institutions in the country lingers, an old video of President Muhammadu Buhari criticizing the government the then president, Goodluck Jonathan on the issue of lingering ASUU strike action has surfaced on social media, IGBERETV reports.

In the video, Buhari was heard criticizing the then President Jonathan’s administration for not being serious in tackling the ASUU strike.

While speaking on the 2014 National Conference convened by the Goodluck Jonathan administration, Buhari spoke against the timing of the confab which came at a time ASUU, Polytechnic lecturers and other arms of tertiary institutions unions were on strike.

Buhari also criticized Jonathan's government for earmarking the sum on N7 billion for the confab, saying a serious government would not spend so much money on frivolity while the tertiary institutions workers were on strike.

In Buhari's words;

“If you could recall, at the time the government said it was voting N7b for the conference, ASUU was on strike. And teachers of other tertiary institutions, like the polytechnics were on strike.

“This strike was on for almost an academic year and a serious government, if they had N7b to throw about, would go and negotiate with ASUU and the teachers organisations and the teachers unions of the tertiary institutions of the polytechnics downwards so that our children will remain in schools.

“The National Assembly is there if you want to amend the constitution so why go and take N7b that we could not afford when our children are on the streets? I think this government has the capacity for wrong priorities that are hurting us as a nation.”

ASUU embarked on strike on February 14, 2022, accusing President Buhari's government of failing to meet ASUU's demands for better funding of universities and better welfare of the academic staff.

However, on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, President Buhari approved the purchase and donation of vehicles, worth N1.4 billion, to neighbouring Niger Republic.

This revelation sparked outrage and the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said that the donation was to help Niger address its security concerns.

Reacting, Nigerians and civil society groups have criticized Buhari for spending such an amount of money which could have been used to offset the funding for ASUU, so that poor children can go back to school.

ASUU Strike: OAU Students Confront Soldiers, Chant Solidarity Songs

The protesting students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State resisted the convoy of the Nigerian Army trying to stop them from protesting the ASUU strike.

Findings show that the soldiers had jumped out of their convoy to disperse the protesting students after dismantling their road blocks.

It was gathered that the soldiers who had earlier dismantled the barricade created by the students on the road at Moro area, Osun State, were later confronted by the mass of students who had retreated but regrouped in their numbers.

The regrouped students started chanting solidarity songs to resist the soldiers “we no go gree, we no go gree”, and “Go back, No way” to the soldiers who had seemed helpless at the time.

The students of the institution have staged protests on different occasions mounting road blocks to demand an end to ASUU strike.

“We booed them away from the barricade today,” one of the leaders of the protest and a member of the Students’ Union Parliament, Abraham Omowumi, also known as Ewatee, said.

The Public Relations Officer of the Union, Ogunperi Taofeek, also said, “The students of OAU again took to the streets today to protest the lingering ASUU strike.

“About 2:30 pm, some of the barricades mounted were broken by men of the Nigerian Army. However, we resisted them at the last barricade, holding them there until the fixed time for our protest lapsed.”

Ogunperi Taofeek noted that the protest would continue on Monday.

Recall that the military on Tuesday, also dispersed protesting students from different public universities in Ondo state dismantling their road blocks.

The ASUU strike started on the 14th of February with no end in sight.
