Have you been in a situation where you went on social media and viewed a couple of posts by your friends or maybe even people you've never even met and just felt depressed, beat yourself up and questioned your life choices? You're not alone in this struggle, in fact, billions of people feel this way too, it's a condition known as Social comparison. Social comparison is a mental state that would drain all the happiness in a person and leave them to be depressed and if not dealt with, could lead to suicide. It's a problem that needs a swift address because we've been subjects to its danger since we were toddlers wanting the same toys as our friends had. We grew up and we wanted the same clothes our peers had and as we grew older, the needs grew bigger and bigger to the point where we now want the same kind of life we see on our social media feed from celebrities and several well to do people. Although, it is a positive thing to want to be a better version of yourself and to desire to be bigger than you currently are it becomes a negative when you pressure yourself because you see other people doing well and then you overwhelm yourself with the comparison. Your way out #1. Be self-aware: The first step to fulfilment and true happiness is self-awareness. Understand who you are and what your interests are. Self-awareness comes with having high self-esteem and high self-worth (not pride, it can be easily confusing). You are an amazing work of art put on this earth to be unique and that such awesomeness only comes in one package and that is YOU! #2: Avoid triggers: Stay off social media if you must for as long as you think is necessary. Avoid anything and anyone who makes you feel bad about yourself. Your mental state is your most valuable possession. #3: Celebrate small wins: Acknowledge and celebrate the little things in your life. Little drops of water make an ocean over time so everything you accomplish is worth the hype. With time, you'll become happier with yourself. #4: Find a support circle: It can be just one person you trust. Someone you share your goals with and can discuss all your ideas with. This would help your self-confidence and overall happiness. #5: Understand times: There is a time for everything in life. There's a time to plant and there's a time to harvest. The big names we have today were once unknown. There are highs and lows in life and your low season is only temporary. #6: Find a role model: Having someone whom you look up to that does what you want to do in life is of great benefit. They would serve as a constant source of inspiration to you. The rationale behind this is that you want to be like them but you're not in competition with them so rather than their successes being a stumbling block to your happiness, it serves as a healthy inspiration to you, a drive to push you to your goal in life. #7: Contribute value: Helping those around you in any way you can help you feel positive about yourself. It might offer your service to old people around you or help kids with their needs, anything you can do to add value to someone's life. It gives you a sense of self-worth and helps you over time to value the number of smilies you put on people's faces rather than the material things you have.

Before I go into the topic fully, here are some surprising facts about Obesity according to the World Health Organization (WHO) •Worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since the year 1975. •In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, age 18 and older, were overweight. Of these over 650 million were obese(about 9%). •39% of adults aged 18 years and over were overweight in 2016, and 13% were obese. •Over half of the world's population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight. •38 million children under 5 years were overweight or obese in 2019. •Over 340 million children and adolescents between age 5-19 were overweight or obese in 2016. •Obesity is preventable. •In Sub-saharan Africa e.g Nigeria, Obesity is fast becoming an endemic. 26% of Nigerian adults are either obese or overweight. The basic cause of Obesity and overweight is an imbalance between the amounts of calories taken into the body and calories expended. The major contributors to Global obesity are: • Increase in intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat and sugar(Junk food and many fast foods which are cheaper to get than healthy foods); an advent of rapid urbanization, and • An increase in physical inactivity due to the increasingly sedentary nature of many forms of work, changing modes of transportation, and increasing urbanization. Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Body mass index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify overweight and obesity. It is defined as a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of his height in meters (kg/m 2). Raised BMI is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as: •Cardiovascular diseases (mainly heart disease and stroke), which were the leading cause of death and disabilities in 2012; •Diabetes •musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis– a highly disabling degenerative disease of the joints) •some cancers (including endometrial, breast, ovarian, prostate, liver, gallbladder, kidney, and colon). The risk for these noncommunicable diseases increases, with increases in BMI. Obesity isn't just about the lack of will-power to stop eating or work out more but it's a biological, physiological and an environmental problem. So now the question is, what environmental, biological and physiological factors promote overeating? Fast foods, foods high in calorie content(burgers, pizza etc.), impulsive eating, increased food selection, and skipped meals all have an impact on overeating. Stress and mood changes can also cause a person to have abnormal eating habits. Even boredom, fatigue, and just habit can cause one to eat more than the body needs especially in theres era of Covid-19. Conclusions You could want to ask what all the fuzz is about concerning obesity but you should also know that the cost of Obesity on our society is high and the price we pay outweighs the pleasure we derive form an unhealthy lifestyle. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders and cancer constantly increase the cost of health care and it's more sad that it's all an unnecessary evil we could avoid by making good decisions concerning what we eat, how much we consume and how we choose to live our lives. SUBJECT Deverstated by noise that filled the air, the head mistress took her Cane from the side bench and hastily walked to where the two boys were and without listening to what had happened, she flogged them mercilessly and dragged them both with their ears into her office. John and Paul had engaged in a fight or rather, what seemed like a fight.paul has continuously been picked on by the older boys in his class especially John who was the oldest of them and he tried to defend himself today but as usual, things turned against him. The head mistress was not willing to hear what either of them had to say so Paul was not able to narrate his ordeal. After three hours of punishment she finally let them go forcing them to make a promise that what has happened won't repeat itself again. Life in a boarding house could be fun for most students, but for some very few ones, life in a boarding house could be 'hell' . The idea the missionaries probably had when they brought the idea of boarding house to Nigeria was to create an environment of learning and closeness for diverse kind of people to build understanding between various ethnics. It was a perfect idea at the time but various factors were overlooked and a major factor was the case of 'superiority complex'. My dad told me that during his boarding days, once you come in as a fresh student, the school management assigns you to a senior who would serve as your master through out the academic year. You are mandated to pick Up his dirty laundry every day to wash them and not only that, you were required to make his bed every day. This probably doesn't sound like a bad idea but the problem is it's adverse effect. Certain Individuals have certain problems with their education so they don't start early and by the time them get to to start, they end up being the oldest in their class and therefore they see other students as inferior owing to the fact that they are younger and this results into bullying(although this is just a case, there are many other cases which result into bullying) .When this older individuals get into boarding schools and see their age mates being served by the younger students, they tend to get vexed and try to subject their class mates to serve them and this mostly results into bullying which traumatises the younger student and affects them in several negative ways.
