Jigawa State, Nigeria – The Nigerian police have confirmed the tragic death of 105 individuals following a petrol tanker explosion in Jigawa State on October 15, 2024. The explosion, which also left 70 people injured, occurred near Khadija University in Majia Town, Taura Local Government Area.

The spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, provided details on the incident, stating that it happened at about 10:30 p.m. when a petrol tanker, registered as KMC 6412 F, and driven by one Yusuf Mohd, aged 32, from Hotoro Quarters, Kano State, lost control and overturned. The tanker was en route from Kano to Nguru, Yobe State, when it veered off near the university, spilling its fuel into nearby drainage systems that extended to the outskirts of the village.

Adam explained that, in a tragic turn of events, villagers attempted to scoop the fuel from the drainage when a fire broke out, engulfing the area and causing multiple fatalities. "The Area Commander of Ringim, along with the Divisional Police Officer of Gujungu, and their men quickly responded to the scene," he said.

The police confirmed that 105 corpses have been recovered, while 70 injured individuals were rushed to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for treatment.

Adam added that the fire was successfully extinguished through the combined efforts of police officers, firefighters, and local residents who assisted in the rescue operation.

The incident has left the community in shock as authorities continue their investigation into the cause of the explosion.

Abuja, Nigeria – Inmates at the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS) Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, have protested against alleged poor feeding and the mismanagement of donated food supplies, The Bureau Newspaper gathered.

The protest erupted after inmates witnessed prison officials moving bags of rice, which had been donated by a philanthropist as palliative, out of the food store. The prisoners accused the officials of stealing the rice meant for their consumption.

According to a prison official familiar with the incident, a truck containing 500 bags of rice was donated to the facility three months ago. However, approximately 200 bags were reportedly shared among the prison staff, leaving 300 bags for the inmates' feeding.

A senior prison official, Mr. Shagba, allegedly encouraged the then officer in charge, DC Lamiya (retd), to take the remaining bags of rice for personal use rather than feeding the inmates, whom he reportedly referred to as “common prisoners.” Despite initial concerns from Lamiya about a potential protest, the rice was removed from the food store during the night and moved to the officer in charge's quarters.

As expected, the inmates became aware of the removal and launched a protest, chanting protest songs and attacking the prison officials involved. It took the swift intervention of the state controller and the zonal coordinator to calm the situation.

The prison official added that, following the protest, several tough inmates were transferred to other correctional centres, and DC Lamiya retired shortly after. He was replaced by Dr. Alhaji Thomas, the new Deputy Controller of Corrections.

However, just days after Dr. Thomas assumed office, another truck of rice was donated to the prison. This time, Mr. Shagba reportedly advised the new officer in charge not to store the rice in the prison’s food store, fearing another protest. The rice was instead offloaded into the officer's quarters.

An inmate confirmed the incident, accusing top prison officials of routinely personalizing donations meant for the inmates' welfare. He added that the swift intervention of the state controller prevented a possible jailbreak.

NLC Demands Immediate Reversal of Fuel Price Hike, Condemns Government’s "Traumatic" Policies

On Wednesday, May 17, 2023, in their National Headquarters in Kaduna, the National Executive Council of the ACF confirmed his selection as the organization's leader of the pan-northern socio-political organization, the Arewa Consultative Forum.

Following a meeting, Mallam Bukar Zarmar, the Secretary of the ACF Leadership Selection Committee, announced to reporters that Chief Audu Ogbe, the outgoing Chairman, had been replaced by the new Chairman.

Biography

Arc. Chief Gabriel Yakubu Aduku, FNIA, PPNIA, PPARCON, OON. A Fellow and a past President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, currently The Chairman of the Board of Trustee of the Institute. A Chartered Architect and a Past President of Architect Registration Council of Nigeria.

A Prime Consultant and Executive Chairman of a reputable Architectural Practice – Archcon Nigeria, established over Five decades. Was once a Council Member of the International Union of Architects (UIA). A one-time Chairman, Nigerian Merchant Bank Limited, United Nigerian Insurance Company Plc. (UNIC) and Lower Benue River Basin Development Authority.

An elected Member and Chairman, Revenue Allocation Committee (the architect of the controversial, 13% derivation formula embedded in the 1999 National Constitution) of the 1994/95 Constitutional Conference. Former Nigerian Minister of State, Health and inducted into the Nigerian’s Construction Industry Hall of Fame. Since 1989 has been a very active participant in partisan politics of Nigeria.

His varied contributions to the economic, social and political growth of Igala Kingdom and the Nation, meritoriously earned him the Traditional Title of Amana-Ogohi 1 – Ata Igala and the National Honours Award of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
