Kobojunkie: Self determination? The president of the nation does not speak on behalf of one group or another but on behalf of Nigeria as a whole. If self-determination suggests SPLITTING that one Nigeria, the President should not be the one speaking or hinting to the possibility of such.
Right on point. Most people here that are advocates of disintegration and sympathizers of Mr. President do not want to accept this simple fact.
But, IMHO, I think this should be done according to geopolitical zones. Then we shall see say na SS truly plenty pass you local champions when it comes to internet presence cool
Yeah that is another good suggestion.

odumchi: I think its obvious that the results of the different polls will be averaged together. Besides, it's not practical to list every ethnicity. Only those with populations upwards of 1 million were listed.
So those in minority are not Nigerians? As I said in my first post here - this thread is divisive. If it must be done, just do it properly and carry everyone along (at least as Ejine stated, else its a wasted effort).

Also your Poll is a flop, one person can vote in all five and it will all count grin

rareman: @ egift obviously this is nothing but mischief, there is a whole lot of different between what u are implying and what the president actually said. Yes u can say it is treason if he ever said that (though from the lines above he never said that it's your words against his) but come to think of it the president just said the fact, u can't take anything away from that.
Which is it? Does his statement imply that something is wrong with the amalgamation of Northern and Southern protectorates in 1914 or it did not? See the original quote below and let us know (emphasis on the bold):

According to the President, something must have gone wrong along the line from 1914 when the Southern and Northern Protectorate amalgamated till date, stressing that the problem of Nigeria did not start today.

“When the Priest was speaking, I started asking myself – what must have gone wrong from 1914 that the Northern and Southern parts of the country were amalgamated? They were under colonial rule since 1960 when we started governing ourselves. From 1960 to date it is about 50 years.
Kind of wondering what to make of the bolded. Is there anything wrong with self determination?
No, there is nothing wrong with "self determination". But the law of Nigeria forbids the President to question the union, or utter that something is wrong with the union of the nation. Every country got formed at some point, its wrong for the President to insinuate that today's challenges was as a result of a formation that occurred 98 years ago. It smack incompetence. His efforts should be suggesting and implementing solution.

For those who voted for him, what did he promise? Is he doing those things? Is it working? - That should be the discussion. Irrespective of party affiliations, Nigerians should demand that politicians state clearly what the will do and we should keep up the pressure to see that they follow through with is.
Politics › Re: President Jonathan's Speech At Enugu Is Treasonable by egift(op):
That you support the division of Nigeria or believe it will bring peace does not wave away the fact that if the president question our union as a nation amounts to treason. If he wants to be the president of Niger Delta, it does not involve shrinking Nigeria.

Argue all you can, if you become President, you will not be allowed by law to utter such as well. I know in present day Nigeria, many have lost faith in Nationalism, Tribalism now abound. But for the Presido to attend a burial ceremony and be there to question our territorial integrity is callous.

Nigeria Recalls Ambassador From Libya Over Gaddafi’s Statement
The Nigerian ambassador to Libya, Alhaji Aliu Mohammed, has been recalled over the provoking statement of Libyan president Muamar Gaddafi. This is made known from a statement released from the ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

Gaddafi had on Tuesday called for the balkanisation of Nigeria against the backdrop of violence that rocked Jos, Plateau State, last week.

The Libyan leader reportedly said one of the best ways of resolving the incessant ethno-religious crises in Nigeria is for the country to go the way of Pakistan and India that separated and resolved their religious crises once and for all.

@odumchi and Uncooked Kanda:
When I first saw this thread, I knew it was useless. But when Afam commented, I decided to cut both of you some slack. But obviously, it is dead on arrival.

@All:
Sadly just like anything Beaf and his gang are doing; its good on paper but painful to even watch. Here are the facts before you go nuclear:
1. Odum claim its official (its not)
2. Nigeria have over 300 ethnic, but the poll they are putting up there is taking 5 at a time (they already have 5 polls = 25 ethnic groups). And its not there at the same time. So the are going to have 300/5 = 60 opinion polls grin - Also Note that each poll is 100%. Meaning the percentage of the poll is by 6,000% grin
3. Its only those that visit Politics section can participate. Even if you push this rubbish to the Homepage still a little proportion will see it. Yet they want to brag about their tribalism and segregation (It seems this is Jonathan's theme for the month).

Solution:
All they have to do is make a Feature Request to Oga Seun, it will be considered on its merit like every other. If approved, on the profile and registration page, a field will be added to and every member can be encouraged to update their profile. All will be ok.

Conclusion:
Since Kpomo is always fast at hauling insults especially to our Northern brothers, by virtue of No. 2 above and his support for this garbage I recommend that Beaf should enroll into the nearest Almajiri school and take some time off the consumption of the adulterated Fresh Air gushing out from Jona.

What will Nigerians be celebrating and what? Jonathan is a huge disappointment. I just pity those that were so short-sighted to campaign, sacrificed and voted for him. He should hide his yeye face in shame.

I know they will pay some people and they will be here to sing Kumbaya and Harkuna Matata for us.

ebere1712: Hummph. Dude Nigeria became an entity in 1914 when it was joined together. Forget independence and republic, those are all hogwash. 1914 is the beginning of this mess. I wouldn't argue about this again. It is ridiculous to say that the beginning of the entity Nigeria started in 1960, when the north and south was joined and ruled as one in 1914.
I am tired of pointing this issue out. The issue here is that:

By virtue of the Oath he swore to and the office he occupies, President Goodluck Jonathan is not allowed to make any statement or carry out any action that that directly or indirectly question, undermine or divide this country. If he by any chance do it while there as President, it is Treason.

How else can I explain it? He just cannot. If he wants a referendum, public debate, amend the law, etc - there are lay down procedures. Going to burial and vomiting such is way off the mark.
Politics › Re: Dr.Ikedife, Past Ohanaeze Ndigbo President-General Condemns Jonathan Over Buhari by egift(m): 11:26pm On May 20, 2012
Onlytruth: I've been wondering why you attack Jonathan the way you do, and have never figured out why. Well, at least you are saying why with the bolded, and of course normal Igbo folks can relate to that if it were all true. BUT the problem is that you are supporting someone (BUHARI) who is FAR AND AWAY A WORSE IGBO HATER. That makes me start to question your TRUE motives. Could it be that you have something PERSONAL to gain from a Buhari presidency (believe me, there are many Igbo who would sell their brother for personal gain, and the job of folks like us is to find those and shut them down! cool ), or that you are deaf and dumb and can't see that Buhari stopped Ekwueme's almost certain presidency in 1987, slammed Ekwueme in jail for nothing while turning loose Shagari (his Fulani brother), his anti-Igbo PTF policies, and his threats during the last election, which led to many Igbo deaths?
Did your Buhari even bother to campaign in SE?
We are waiting for your answer.
Mazi, as you can personally bear me witness, on Nairaland I have not attacked any Igboman. So when you question my heritage I just let it be. Also I believe Buhari is better that Jonathan if the choice is limited to both. Also I have never heard any particular instance were Buhari specifically hurt any Igboman or a Christian (if there is post it).

On Jonathan, the following stand true for me:
- He is dull, weak and clueless (maybe very corrupt too). Even as Commander In Chief of the entire security apparatus (that IBB, Abacha, etc, used in holding Nigeria spellbound), he Jonathan not only convey helplessness but runs when little kid hit the street with knockouts.

- Jonathan is an Ijaw, me am Igbo. The relationship between us is that we are Nigerians; the same string holds me and a Yoruba, Hausa, Tiv, Efik, Fulani and the rest of the 300+ ethnic groups in Nigeria. He is not closer than any of them.

- That Jonathan is banging our daughter does not also grant him the right to take away the privileges, opportunities, rights and aspirations of Ndigbo. Ijaw remains a minority group. It amounts to abomination for Ndigbo to go begging them.

- Question: Since Ndigbo invested so much to establish Jonathan in 2011, will Jonathan also put in so much for Ndigbo? NO. Instead the Fisherman cum Zoo-keeper is forming Oliver Twist (asking for more 4yrs).

For me let the best man be elected. 2015 is still far away and should not have been any issue if not Jonathan's disappointments and efforts to squeeze himself into 2015.

ebere1712: 1914 - beginning of Nigeria

So lets paraphrase what Gej said

Something must have gone wrong between the beginning of Nigeria and now. This should be obvious to even babies given the sorry state of your (country) hell-hole
Here we go again. Why are twisting a straightforward comment to make it less obvious? From the above this what is clearly the facts:
In 1914, the Northern and Southern Protectorates were merged together by Sir Lord Lugard.
In 1960, Nigeria became an independent Nation from the British
In 1963, Nigeria became a Republic

So, look at the following possibilities and what it implies:
- Something must have gone wrong from 1914 = The current challenges started because of the Amalgamation. Meaning without that event it will not have been.

- If he chose 1960 or 1963 = It means the Independence or becoming a republic was the problem.

Fact: the President of Nigeria is suggesting a split of Nigeria as a quick fix and you guys do not see anything wrong with. It is Treason.

OAM4J: I agree with what Mr president said; something is wrong somewhere with our amalgamation and I hope it is fixed before we clock 100yrs in 2014.

That said, such conclusive statement shouldn't come from the president. My people always say "if the teacher's mother is a witch, the announcement should not come from a student". Also if Mr president is sure something is wrong with our amalgamation, what has done or what is he doing to fix it?
Am 100% with you on that. If he want to institute reform, there are procedures. If he wants to turn activist, he should first step aside. If he wants a public referendum, there are things to be done first. If he wish to convey a "high-power" meeting (as they say), there are procedures.

What we are saying on this thread from the onset, Is that the President of Nigeria, do not have the luxury to question the territorial composition of Nigeria at a burial ceremony. If he do, it amounts to a treasonable offense.

How clearer can I state this?

Good observation. Its sad those who have found themselves in leadership position not only care about themselves but spend state resources on dividing the nation along any line they can in order to keep looting us dry.

Our founding fathers will be crying in their graves - if they see how the present greedy few are pulling down a nation some of them laid down their lives to build.

So sad the current occupants are not helping the situation either.

Here are things that have been said about Buhari:
- “Buhari is a forthright and very clearly a disciplined man. He has managed to cut the image of a person who abhors corruption genuinely”. - Nuhu Ribadu Chairman EFCC Daily Trust - 27th Feb. 2007,
- “Buhari stands out to be the most DEDICATED and PATRIOTIC leader" - Chief Olu Falae - ThisDay Newspaper, 23rd March 2007,
- "Buhari took any work that was given to him very seriously. He is reliable as he is hardworking and honest ”. - President Olusegun Obasanjo, in his book, Not My Will.

Can we have an independent comment on Mr Luck? Comparing Buhari to Jonathan is like Day and Night, respectively. Buhari remains the most respected Nigerian Leader still alive.

To understand the severity of Jonathan's crime, lets revisit colonel Ghadaffi's comment

Gadaffi Again, Calls For Nigeria’s Split : Along Ethnic Lines
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has intensified his call for the division of Nigeria. This time, however, he is calling for the country to be broken up into several states along ethnic lines like the former Yugoslavia, a shift from his earlier suggestion that the country should be split along religious lines.

The Libyan leader’s latest comments are likely to worsen a diplomatic row with Nigeria, as his proposal earlier this month that country be split into two countries formed from the Muslim north and mainly Christian south led to the recall of the Ambassador to Libya by the Federal Government.

Gaddafi’s inciting statement has been condemned by many including Nigerian Senate President David Mark, who called the former AU chairman a mad man for advocating splitting of Nigeria

Gaddafi Is Mad – Senate Presdent
The Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi incurred the ire of senators yesterday over comments credited to him that Nigeria should split into two as a panacea to incessant bloodshed in some parts of the country.

Fuming with anger, the Senate President, David Mark said it was only an insane man that would make such a comment, describing the Libyan president as a man whose word should not be taken seriously.

And all of a sudden it is now acceptable for Jonathan to question our Union (even as a seating President), wooow!
