No fewer than 4,515 rice and cassava farmers in Anambra State are to receive farm inputs worth N728 million under the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)-assisted Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP). Anmabra State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mechanisation, Processing and Export, Mr. Afam Mbanefo, disclosed this while declaring open the exercise in Awka. He said the inputs disbursement exercise was for the 2017 wet season farming in five VCDP participating local government areas of the state, further assuring that government was determined to make agriculture a business and a major source of income for farmers. Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr. Leo Imoka, Mbanefo disclosed that government was investing over N100m on the inputs, including seeds, to boost yam farming for export, and assured that the resources would be distributed to farmers soon. He challenged the beneficiaries to reciprocate government’s effort in boosting agriculture by utilising the inputs judiciously. The state Programme Coordinator (SPC), Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP), Mr. Emmanuel Aguncha, in his remarks, disclosed that the inputs distribution targeted 296 farmer organisations on 8,999 hectares of farmland. He explained that the counterpart payment by IFAD was N364m while the farmers paid a matching grant of N364m.. Aguncha said each rice farmer would receive 50kg of rice seeds, four bags of NPK, two bags of Urea fertiliser and four litres of herbicide per hectare. He added that each cassava farmer would get four bags of NPK, 50 bundles of cassava stems, three litres of herbicide and two grants of artrazine per hectare. “The benefitting farmers were selected from Awka North, Anambra East, Anambra West, Orumba North and Ayamelum local government areas. “Our emphasis is more on youths and women. We are also going to provide on-the-spot training for them on how to use the inputs. “The programme carried out a workshop on integrity compliance and business ethics to make the farmers honest and to ensure that inputs were judiciously utilised “We are also using the e-wallet and involving the supply chain managers; the International FertiliserDevelopment Centre (IFDC) and Cellulant; two development agencies managing the distribution of the inputs for this year,” he stressed. One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Adaeze Ukwuego, while commending the state government and VCDP for the early distribution of the inputs, assured that the items would be utilised effectively. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, says the 2017 budget implementation will be affected by growing uncertainties in the global oil market. Kachikwu made the statement at a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja. He, however, said the Ministry of Finance and the Federal Executive Council were working on measures to cushion the impacts of the shortfall from oil production on the budget. Kachikwu explained that while the oil production benchmark in the budget was 2.2 million barrels per day (mbpd), the country was producing about 1.7mbpd. ”In terms of the budget impact, definitely, I mean, it is predicated on the number of 2.2 million barrels per day and a price index of 42.50 dollars. ”Within the price cap, I think we’re still reasonably within range. Obviously we have lost quite a lot of months, some months, at least, two or three in which we did not produce what the budget had projected, so there is definitely going to be differential. ”Like you know, the Ministry of Finance is aggressively looking for ways to cover some of these shortfalls; part of that is efficiency, how do we cut down our expenditure? “Obviously, certain capital items will be affected; if we do not have money, we cannot do certain capital projects that we have in the budget. ”There is no gainsaying the fact that budget will be impacted but we are working hard with the Federal Executive Council to see how we can forecast or predict that sort of impact and see how we can recover,” he said. Kachikwu said Nigeria would in time join in the production cut initiated by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and non- OPEC members led by the Russian Federation to stabilise the market. He further said Nigeria, though committed to the deal, would have to get to a predictive level of comfort to voluntarily join in the production cut. ”We’re fairly in consensus of what our position is, there is no disagreement on that. But just to set the record straight, the price of oil today is hovering around 44.70 dollars per barrel. ‘’So, there is a bit of upsurge trajectory which is good, which means the price for Nigeria is probably in the 46 dollars type range.’’ He said the price was ‘’below the 50-dollar mark which is where we’ll feel comfortable’’. Kachikwu said there were a lot of reasons for the situation, including ‘’a lot of aggressive shale production, and obviously barrels coming out from Nigeria and Libya because of the exemption’’. He said Nigeria has begun to recover gradually.’’ The minister added: ”Over the last one and a half months, we’ve basically began to recover some of our assets that were vandalised and we’ve been getting a lot more cooperation from the militants that they are letting us continue to try and grow those barrels. ”That recovery is going to be gradual. ‘’We’ll still have below the benchmark set for us by OPEC and I think that over the next one or two months, hopefully, we can get to that point when we can say the recovery has been tested, is systemic, and predictable. “We need to watch that for a couple of months so that we can get to a predictive comfort and then we voluntarily go to OPEC and see how we can contribute.’’ He stressed that Nigeria had been an active member of OPEC for 46 years and that was the reason behind some of the cut analysis and strategies that were got from Saudi Arabia and other countries. Jeffboi:Typical Fayose-like reasoning. . Whatever monies recovered would be included in thr budget before it can be spent. |
joe4real12:What economy? An economy that was driven by the rise and fall in oil price? An economy where everything was imported but it didn't reflect in the dollar rate due to the high oil price. When it dropped why were they borrowing to pay salaries? |
Why on earth is GEJ still walking free? oh, I forgot that he is on this part of the earth where corrupt individuals turn heroes over night & when arrested their brothers believe it is a witch hunt. . I almost gave up on Nigeria when an Igbo Lawyer claimed that Evans is being treated in such manner because of his tribe. |
Nigerians can be real funny. You claimed he was dead on the previous trip, y'all kept mute when he returned. Now he is out again and the same people are still singing the same song all over. Fayose, as I have always said is a damn cynic, who has nothing to lose . Believe what he says at your own peril. |
So I get to report those Police officers and FRSC officials who collect N50 on federal roads? |

More than 11 persons are believed to have lost their lives and an undisclosed number injured in multiple suicide bombings on Tuesday night in the outskirts of Maiduguri in the latest onslaught by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno. A credible security source disclosed under anonymity, that the first and second explosions occurred at about 2145 hours at Mulaikalmari, six kilometres away from Maiduguri. The source said that eight persons, including the suicide bombers were killed in the attack. Three persons were also killed and five others wounded in the third and fourth explosions, which occurred about 20 minutes later at Polo-Sabon Gari area of Maiduguri, according to the source, who said he helped in the evacuation of the victims from the scenes of the explosion. “All the attacks occurred in the outskirts of the metropolis. “It is a foiled attempt by Boko Haram insurgents to infiltrate the town.” The source added that security teams had been drafted to the affected areas to ascertain the situation. He disclosed those wounded referred to Special Hospital, Maiduguri for medical attention. Efforts to get confirmation from the Police proved abortive the as Command’s public relations officer did not respond to phone calls and text messages. However, the Chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Satomi Ahmed, who confirmed the attacks, said his officials have been mobilised to the scenes. “Thanks to the hard work of our Emergency Response Teams we were able to put together a prompt response,” he told NAN.
