Politics / UN To Partner Ekiti State Govt On Sdgs by Ekiti360(m): 2:01pm On Aug 17, 2019
UN to partner Ekiti on SDGs, Fayemi hints on plan for bond to offset outstanding gratuities

The United Nations systems has reaffirmed its resolve to support Ekiti State Government in its drive to achieve the vision of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the state.

The Resident Coordinator, Mr Edward Kallon, disclosed this at a meeting with Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday. He highlighted the pillars of the UN reforms in Nigeria to include collective support for the government to implement the SDGs; peace building and prevention.

Kallon said the potential areas of partnership with the Nigerian government include advocacy for legislation on establishment of the National Commission For Peace, Reconciliation And Mediation and deepening understanding of the SDGs and localization at the state level in partnership with the Governors’ forum.

The UN top official who hailed Governor Fayemi’s social security programmes, said the UN would work with the state to actualise its SDGs vision.

Governor Fayemi at the meeting stressed the need for the nation to address the issues of employment among the youth; increasing inequality and poverty and insecurity.

He expressed the willingness of his administration to work with the United Nations in the area of peace-keeping and conflict management.

According to him, “It is no longer a debate that we have democracy but we have to be careful not to be overrun by the explosive demographic growth that you spoke about, the nature of the extreme poverty but particularly the increasing inequality and what that has brought about by way of the violent extremism and the impatience of the youth that are at the receiving end of these challenges and we face it daily.

“We are recruiting teachers, and it will shock you, Ekiti is one of the smallest states, on the first day of our recruitment, we had 6500 applications online, by 12.00noon this afternoon, we had 9,000 for teaching position that will start mid-September in our basic schools.

“That depict a picture of the enormity of the challenge. This is what increasingly led to the radicalization of people who feel there is no hope, so we have to find a way to eke out a living and government had to be more innovative and creative about tackling these challenges.

“On advocacy, clearly, we are desirous of close collaboration of the UN systems in order to push for a world of peace, progress and development that can help us address this governance deficits that we are dealing with that undermines sustainable development over the long term”.

Dr Fayemi said government will soon organize bond to offset the outstanding gratuities of pensioners and later find a way of paying back.

“We are interested a lot in the bond and we have a practical challenge here for example in our state, we are looking at a way of developing innovative bond to address it, we have a lot of people who have retired from service and their gratuities have piled up over past couple of years running into billions of naira that we are not immediately able to pay and I don’t think it is fair for all this people who have devoted years of their lives to serving the state.

“That is why we started the social security scheme for the elderly as a safety net to address this sort of issue but for us we think it should be possible for us to develop a bond that can enable us pay off all these and then find a way to offset that bond over a long term”. The governor said.

Politics / Ekiti State Govt Introduces Remita For Integrated Funds Collection by Ekiti360(m): 6:38am On Aug 11, 2019
The Ekiti State Government has adopted Remita, a leading electronic payment platform in Africa, as the Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) collections for collection of funds due to its Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), for both formal and informal sectors.

This announcement was made recently as part of Ekiti State Government’s deepening of the implementation of the state’s Treasury Single Account initiative.

Powered by SystemSpecs, the financial technology and human capital software powerhouse and owners of Remita, the project covers 70 MDAs and institutions in Ekiti State.

The Remita platform will enable payers to seamlessly make payments to Ekiti State MDAs and institutions, using any of the Remita channels (State-wide Payment Points, Bank Branches (commercial and microfinance), Debit/Credit Cards, Internet Banking, PoS, Mobile Wallet and USSD) that is most convenient for them.

The State is able to issue invoices for every transaction; each transaction is traceable from the point of invoicing through the payment journey and into the State’s bank statement. Each MDA is able to verify transactions receipts independently and securely before delivery service. The state also has access to real-time balances of its accounts at any point in time.

“As part of our commitment to transform the lives of the good people of Ekiti state, we have commenced the accelerated implementation of the Treasury Single Account to entrench accountability and transparency in the management of the finances of our dear state, said Mr. Dapo Kolawole, Ekiti State Commissioner for Finance.

“We have appointed SystemSpecs, the same firm that delivered the Federal Government of Nigerias TSA project to deploy its Remita platform for Ekiti State. We are not only delighted that individual and corporate citizens have more options with which to pay, but also that government can also more easily know its true financial position at any time.”

This development would also enable the state to participate in the 2018 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) conditional grants scheme initiated by the Federal Government.

“We are delighted to partner with Ekiti State in bringing efficiency, transparency and increase to the state’s revenue collections. We appreciate the opportunity to bring our experience and technology to the table in support of the state’s drive to reposition its finances for accelerated economic development. SystemSpecs has done same with the Federal Government and other states in Nigeria, and we are starting to the same in other African countries, said Demola Igbalajobi, Divisional Head, Remita Payment Gateway and Infrastructure, SystemSpecs.

The Ekiti State Government has procured equipment worth N109 million which will be distributed to all public secondary schools in the first week of 2019/2020 academic session in September.

Foluso Daramola lamented that the immediate past administration did not embark on any serious renovation of schools during the four years it spent in office leading to serious dilapidation of facilities in schools across the state.

The Commissioner informed the members of the House Committee that the government has carried out a comprehensive evaluation of facilities in public schools in the state with a view to ascertaining the level of intervention required by government to reposition Education in the state.

Politics / Fayemi Flags Off Water Pipeline Extension & Distribution Network Improvement by Ekiti360(m): 2:13pm On Aug 07, 2019
Governor Fayemi flags off "Water Pipeline Extension & Distribution Network Improvement" in Ado Ekiti

Governor of Ekiti state, Kayode Fayemi recently flagged off the "Water Pipeline Extension & Distribution Network Improvement" in Ado Ekiti.

The state government recently flagged-off a $56 million Ero Dam turnaround project to meet 85 per cent of water needs of the people.

Gov. Kayode Fayemi said at the ceremony that the state had declared a state of emergency in the water sector in the state by the flag-off of the project.

The project is being handled by Sagittarius Henan Engineering. The five-year project is to be completed by June 2020.

The governor said that the state had paid a staggering sum of N700 million counterpart fund to complete the project that was approved by the World Bank in 2014.

“It was because of the safety of the citizens that the Federal Government declared an emergency in WASH.

“So, Ekiti has keyed into the programme with this project. Ekiti was ranked second in Nigeria as a state that practises open defecation. We shall put up institutional and legal frameworks to ensure Ekiti is open defecation-free before 2030,” he said.

Politics / We Might Not Be Able To Help Everyone, But We Will Try Our Best - Erelu Fayemi by Ekiti360(m): 3:42pm On Jul 31, 2019
https://abiodunborisade.com/we-might-not-be-able-to-help-everyone-but-we-will-try-our-best-long-live-mama-jolaade-osho-erelu-fayemi/

It was nice to meet Mama Jolaade Osho at Ikere-Ekiti this afternoon. My organisation, Ekiti Development Foundation (EDF) is about to start a Food Outreach Program for the elderly known as Ounje Arugbo.

During the verification exercise in Ikere last week, the project team discovered that Mama Osho could not make it to the meeting because she was very frail,so they went to her home. Mama is over 105 years old (there are claims that she might be much older) and she lives alone.

Mama Osho does not have any living children, she lost all her three children over 30 years ago and she has been on her own since then. Some people labelled her a witch and taunted her endlessly.

Occasionally a few kind people give her money to buy food, but wicked souls steal whatever little she has from her. When the EDF project team visited her, she was found living in such squalor; they were badly shaken as they were giving their report. We all swung into action.

One week later, Mama Osho now has a new place to live in, while her family home is being renovated. She no longer has to worry about when her next meal will be.

We arranged two carers for Mama to work in shifts. They will prepare her meals, take her for walks, supervise her medication and keep her company. There was not a dry eye in the room today as we all laughed, joked and danced with Mama.

In the Ekiti that we all knew back then, like in other African communities, every child has a mother and every mother has a child, biological or otherwise. Let us look out for those amongst us who do not have children to care for them for one reason or the other.

It diminishes us all when our elderly are found in the kind of condition Mama Osho was last week. We might not be able to help everyone, but we will try our best. Long live Mama Jolaade Osho. Your God has not forgotten you.

He expressed appreciation to God for giving Ologuntoye the opportunity to return to the civil service, noting that his wealth of experience

workforce should be more united and dedicated.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Evang Foluso Daramola commended Ologuntoye for his
impeccable character and enviable attitude to work, describing him as a very cerebral and cool headed administrator.

He advised young officers to be dedicated to duty, be contented and be loyal to the government, noting that time of rewards will come. Mr Alfred Ologuntoye will be retiring from the Ekiti State Civil Service in a couple of days.
