Lagos State Ministry of Environment said on Sunday it had put in place measures to reduce to the barest minimum, incidences of flooding in the state. This is contained in a statement signed by the Ministry's Public Relations Officer, Mr Fola Adeyemi. The Statement was sent to Daily Times of Nigeria.

The statement said the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Tunji Bello, monitored the mid-rain cleaning programme embarked upon by the Drainage Maintenance Office and Emergency Flood Abatement Unit of the ministry. The ministry assured Lagos residents that the state government would sustain its all-year maintenance and cleaning programmes.

It said that this would ensure that major canals and channels were kept clean to allow free flow and discharge of water whenever it rains.
``It will be recalled that the Lagos State Government alerted Lagos residents earlier in the year that the state is to experience rains of high intensity with accompanied thunderstorms.

``We have put in place deliberate preventive plans and programmes to ensure that the incidence of flooding is reduced to the barest minimum,” the statement said.

Lagos State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Fatai Mabadeje, has said the state will roll out more fibre optic cables to address the increasing population of the state.
Mabadeje who dropped the hint at the recent ministerial press briefing in Lagos, puts the current population of Lagos residents at over 21 million, but said the number would jump to 25 million by 2015, going by the high rate of migration of people into Lagos.
According to him, the present infrastructure in the area of fibre optic would not sustain the growing population of Lagos, hence the need for additional fibre optic cable rollout that would boost broadband penetration in the state.
In the area of education, the commissioner said the state was able to set up an e-learning centre designed to improve the quality of education in all institutions of learning. "The e-learning centre seeks to improve access to information for various research activities and serves as a hub to stimulate innovations and entrepreneurship," he said.

Features of the centre include e-library facilities for children and adults, e-books and reference library, science exhibition hall, meeting rooms and video conferencing facilities.

He listed upcoming projects of the state to include the establishment of forensic laboratory, the renewable energy initiatives, and the Lagos smart city project among others.

According to him, the state government had approved the establishment of a world-class forensic laboratory to assist the security agencies and judiciary in properly investigating crimes and bringing the perpetrators to book. Its features are purpose-built crime laboratory, purpose-built forensic laboratory and data centre for easy retrieval of collected evidence or data.

The renewable energy initiatives space is a totality off-grid sustainable workforce workspace and mobile solar generator made up of four major components, he said, adding that the Lagos smart city is being proposed as a more intelligent way of managing the States' resources as a global city where technology, collaboration and networking connects everyone, everywhere. A pilot of the concept known as i-HQ has been approved and will be implemented over the next twelve months in Yaba area of the state, Mabadeje said.

He listed some of its benefits to include stimulating innovation and creating a platform to encourage commercially innovative ideas.

The Lagos transport commissioner highlighted the achievements of his ministry.

Over 51 million passengers were conveyed by red buses operating under the Lagos State Government-owned LAGBUS across the different routes in Lagos in the last one year.

Kayode Opeifa, Commissioner for Transportation, disclosed this on Friday in Ikeja at a news briefing organised to mark Governor Babatunde Fashola`s sixth year in office.

He described the feat as unprecedented, adding that it was achieved by the deployment of an additional 364 buses across the different BRT routes.

The commissioner said the state government had licenced more franchisees to operate buses on new routes, to improve commuters’ access to the BRT system.

On the problem of rickety buses, Mr. Opeifa said the government had finalised arrangements with the operators, to re-fleet and get the required spare-parts for the faulty ones.

“The government is also monitoring franchisees to ensure that they operate within our regulatory framework.

“Three erring operators have been sanctioned, while some others are being questioned on various issues,” he said.

The commissioner said the ongoing expansion of Ikorodu Road by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) was part of government`s efforts to expand BRT infrastructure. He said the government had also acquired more ferries and built modern jetties across the state, to boost water transportation.

He said the government planned the introduction of cable cars to ply routes in Apapa and Ikoyi as part of efforts to provide more transportation options for residents.

He said the promulgation of traffic laws, which restricted motorcycle operations on 475 roads, had reduced `Okada’- related accidents and deaths by as much as 80 per cent.

The commissioner added that the legislation had made the state safer.

Mr. Opeifa said the state government had erected 25,000 traffic signal lights in the last one year, to enhance traffic management in the state.

He added that the state government was boosting the capacity of men of the Lagos State Transport Management Agency (LASTMA) with training and equipment, to ensure efficiency. He also clarified that the introduction of uniforms for drivers and conductors was being delayed by logistic issues, adding that the programme would take off soon.

The commissioner restated the commitment of the state government to establish a modern rail transportation, adding that the ongoing light rail project was aimed at achieving that.
