There is a certain depth to the quote that takes a bit of time to understand the first time you hear it. This is another thing I like about it.

You can tell if someone understands it properly by how they explain it.

The poverty rates in Lagos are higher than that of other states in the SW.

Or at least so I recall from stats I've seen before.

Can anyone post a full list of poverty by state? And how "poverty" is defined, mathematically?

British Cameroons technically wasn't part of Nigeria.

Administered with/from Nigeria, but not part of. The Northern part (I guess Adamawa State + some other bits) voted to join Nigeria in a referendum. The southern part voted to join Cameroon.

Their first option would have been outright independence though, I believe.

Reducing the risk of "losing lives", etc is not desirable to you?

Furthermore, why is destroying public property OK to you?

Please explain name-dropping to me again
PoliticsRe: Cut Down A Tree In Lagos And Be Jailed - Tunji Bello by ektbear: 11:22pm On Oct 04, 2011
Err, the intent doesn't matter.

Destroying public property is a crime. Whether Fashola wants to turn Lagos into mini-London, mini-Dubai or mini-Mogadishu, it doesn't matter.

Don't destroy public property. Gerrit?

Regarding flooding, I was under the impression that trees do help reduce the negative impact of flooding.

BTW, how are these two statements of yours not a contradiction?

arsenefc:
With regards to flooding: Didnt realize that trees make your land less prone to flooding. I always thought they just help mitigate the risk
not prevent it or make it less prone.
Or does "mitigate the risk" mean something different from "make it less prone"?

Hehe grin

Fstranger, Osun State indigene, your attention is wanted in this thread.

Kindly explain to me about name-dropping again?

And here I was thinking you knew your own state well.
PoliticsRe: Cut Down A Tree In Lagos And Be Jailed - Tunji Bello by ektbear: 9:26pm On Oct 04, 2011
The objective is not X Y or Z.

The objective is, follow the damn rules, and don't destroy property that doesn't belong to you.

What else needs to be said?

These same people will wipe out the trees and then wonder why their land becomes hotter, drier, and more prone to flooding.

Nairaland GeneralRe: Strange And Unusual Dates This Year, October Stands Out! by ektbear: 8:55pm On Oct 04, 2011
It will always be 111.

If you are born in 19XX, then your age is 2011-19XX.

Which implies that
Age+19XX = 2011.

By him saying look at only "XX", he is saying subtract 1900 from both sides.

It is just another way of stating the year, basically.

Of what relevance is Rome being built in a day to lawlessness?

Let me again quote Pifa's post:

Pifa:
Some of you are a curious lot. Ever since I found this web site a couple of years ago, I’ve come to realize that there is a dichotomy between what Nigerians say they want in their society (law and order) and what they are willing to sacrifice to live in a lawful and orderly society (nothing).

I am bemused at how some of you dug deep for reasons this ordinance should not be enacted or cannot be enforced. To the person who brought up the firewood for the poor issue, let me ask you this: Would you justify jumping the queue at a bus station just because you were running late for work? Would a poor person justify killing zoo animals for meat because of hunger?

Ignorance is no defense for flouting the law and poverty is no justification for committing an offence.

The issue here is very simple: the trees are public property and you have no right to destroy them. Can it be any clearer than that?
Follow the rules. Simple!

Or did you spend all your time in Lagos when you lived in Nigeria?
PoliticsRe: Aregbesola: I Can Never Leave Lagos And Lagos Can Never Leave Me by ektbear: 10:55am On Oct 04, 2011
Fstranger.

Bola Ige who you seem to be a big fan of.

Do you even know anything about the man's town?

Hehe.

Man! And here I was thinking that you who claim to be more Yoruba than others would know these things  grin

The language spoken in his hometown is more similar to that spoken in mine than it is in yours. Men from my part of Ekiti have taken kingship in Ijeshaland. That should be enough to tell you how closely related we are on that border.

I am 100% stating fact when I say that I am more closely connected to Aregbesola by blood and by language than most in Osun State.

The same is even more true of your Bola Ige.
PoliticsRe: Aregbesola: I Can Never Leave Lagos And Lagos Can Never Leave Me by ektbear: 10:45am On Oct 04, 2011
Err. Lol.

There is no namedropping. I don't know the guy personally at all.

I'm making a statement about history, sub-ethnicity and migration, not about even me or him personally as individuals.

Wait a second. . .you grew up in Ife right? I'm a bit surprised, heh. I thought you'd know more about your neighbors in Ijesha than that.

Anyway, I won't say any more. I'd suggest you look a bit into the history of your neighbors, especially where some of them migrated to. Once you do that you'll see that my statement is 100% correct.

And here I was thinking you'd be someone who knows Yoruba history very well.

The state government forwarded an Appropriation Bill of a whopping N309 billion for 2011, out of which 80 per cent is devoted to capital projects, thus making the state the highest in capital to recurrent ratio in the country.

Amazing! So spending $1.6 billion a year on capital projects? Will be the most developed state in Nigeria at that rate.

How do the different states rank?

Hrm, very impressive.
