Not trying to be poritiklar collect, but it would be nice to see a Yoruba nation with their territories in Benin Republic included and a Hausa nation with their Niger republic territories, this way we can see what their true potential is.
Hausa(+Kanuri?)land as its own separate country might be tough going. Generally, regions far away from the sea do a lot worse than others. Not to mention that northern Hausaland right now has the desert creeping up against it. I dunno. If it were me, I'd try to negotiate some sort of longterm cash payment in oil before agreeing to partition Nigeria, if I were their leaders. Ask for 500k barrels of oil per day? I dunno. They'd need some sort of lifeline.

Yorubaland I think would do pretty well. All the necessary ingredients for a successful country (access to the sea, excellent existing port, lots of land, substantial mineral resources largely unexploited [oil, natural gas, oil]), relatively well-educated populace (at least for African standards), a pretty impressive diaspora. Then again, I'm a bit biased.

SS would do extremely well. Would probably be the richest of the post-Nigeria components.

Not too sure about how the rest of the country (middle belt and Igboland) would do.

"The blue line goes to Badagry [west of Lagos]. It just makes sense to take that on to Togo and to Ghana. It will create trade and move people and also goods across west Africa. It probably sounds ludicrous, it might not even work, but we need to think about expanding in these ways.

"I understand it costs more money to take a container from Lagos to Abuja [the Nigerian capital] than it does to ship one from China to Lagos. Unbelievable. Rail, hopefully, will change a lot of that."

I'm not sure what fraction of transport in the US is done via road versus rail, water, etc.

Road networks in the US are obviously far superior to those in naija, greatly reducing costs. I'd imagine you'd want to transport a container via rail though than by road.

Politics › Re: Was Colonialism Good For Africa? by ektbear: 8:18pm On Apr 03, 2011
^-- I strongly disagree.

It costs more to transport a container from Lagos to Abuja than from China to Lagos. If that doesn't reflect on how poor the transportation system in this country is, I dunno what does. As I've said earlier. . . in a certain sense, this means that Lagos is closer to China (and the rest of the world) than it is to Abuja.

Transportation in this country might be good by African standards, but that isn't good enough.

Regarding your latter point. . . Africa (and the rest of the developing world) as a whole is urbanizing. Urbanization is not a bad thing. And it doesn't make much sense to fight it.

from Niger Delta.
So voting based on ethnicity. . .

--- I'm campaigning for Jonathan's candidacy because I believe the presidency should not be the exclusive rights of certain part of our nation . That Nigerians ,irrespective of their tribe, race and region should be able to aspire to the highest office in the land . Denying GEJ of this opportunity is saying otherwise. The North 'Born to rule' mentality must stop ! Nigeria belongs to all of us !
There was a zoning formula in place. If you are anti-zoning, then GEJ would never have even been selected VP. If you are pro-zoning, then in theory it is still the North's "turn."

--- I stand for GEJ's presidency because where he's from , Niger Delta ,provides over 90 percent of our resources . Haba , these guys deserve a shot at the presidency.
Zoning principle suggests that they'd get their turn when it becomes their time. 2015 was supposed to belong to either SS or SE under zoning (To be clear, I'm not a fan of this zoning principle, just stating that under it, everyone would have gotten a shot.)

After Jonathan's presidency, I long for an Igbo president .Come 2015, I believe it should be the turn for Igbo's candidates . These guys have been denied and treated as second class citizens.
Why do you think GEJ would only serve one turn, first of all? Second. . . if you are saying "turn", then are you supporting zoning? If so, then how can you support GEJ who is violating the zoning principle? You are being very inconsistent. . .

But what is this "incitement" stuff? Are the Afghans robots or zombies? Must they respond in such a horrific manner to someone doing something disrespectful? To the point that 20 people are dead?

In this matter, the pastor gets 1% of the blame, the Afghans 99%. They are the ones violating the law and causing mayhem, not him. They are the ones with blood on their hands, not him.

A reasonable person has to ignore certain insults. Or should I go on a rampaging mayhem and kill a bunch of Koreans just because some pastor in Korea says something bad about black people  huh
Islam › Re: Afghan Protests Over Florida Koran Burning Continue For Third Straight Day by ektbear(op): 4:32pm On Apr 03, 2011
^-- He is untouchable. No one has any pretext to arrest him; there are no laws against burning religious texts in the US.

He burned his property, a book. That to my knowledge is not illegal.

That this particular property of his has great significance to lots of people is not enough reason for him to be arrested. What he did was perfectly within his rights. Unfortunately, some people responded very poorly to his actions.

I'm a fan of freedom of speech. Unfortunately, in this particular case, freedom of speech comes at a huge cost.

In a perfect world, people would learn that it is not OK to go rampaging just because some guy in another country burned your holy book.

What the pastor did might be distasteful to many, but it doesn't violate any of the laws of his country (the US), nor any fundamental human rights. Guys in Afghanistan have no justification for taking the actions they took.

If my next door neighbor decides to pile up a Bible, Koran, and Bhagavad Gita, etc and set them all on fire, he will have offended many in my neighborhood. But that won't be enough reason for those offended to kill him, shoot him, cause mayhem, etc.

@EzeUche: Foreign Affairs is not as widely trafficked as this section. No point posting it there; nobody would see it.

Islam › Afghan Protests Over Florida Koran Burning Continue For Third Straight Day by ektbear(op): 3:33pm On Apr 03, 2011
By Joshua Partlow and Javed Hamdard, Sunday, April , 10:09 AM

KABUL--For the third straight day, Afghans took to the streets Sunday to protest the burning of a Koran in Florida, with demonstrations that were mostly peaceful, a marked contrast to the first two days of violence that left at least 20 people dead.

Hundreds of people blocked the main highway in Jalalabad, an important city in eastern Afghanistan. Demonstrators burned an an effigy of President Obama and chanted anti-American slogans. Among the protestors were many students from a local university who called for the prosecution of Florida pastor Terry Jones, according to Ahmad Abdulzai, a spokesman for the provincial governor.

On March 20, Jones, the pastor of a tiny Florida church, declared Islam’s holy book “guilty of crimes against humanity” and ordered it set ablaze in a portable fire pit.

Sunday’s demonstration ended peacefully, as did another one in Parway province, the home of Bagram Air Field, a large NATO military base north of Kabul. There, protestors burned tires and blocked a highway. A second day of demonstrations Saturday in Kandahar, however, was more volatile, as protestors who turned out to a downtown mosque clashed with police. Twenty people were injured, the Associated Press reported.

The ongoing tumult prompted Gen. David Petraeus, the top NATO commander in Afghanistan, and his civilian counterpart, Ambassador Mark Sedwill, to issue a statement reiterating “our condemnation of any disrespect to the Holy Qu’ran and the Muslim faith.”

“We condemn, in particular, the action of an individual in the United States who recently burned the Holy Qu’ran,” the statement said. “We further hope that Afghan people understand that the actions of a small number of individuals, who have been extremely disrespectful to the Holy Qu’ran, are not representative of any of the countries of the international community who are in Afghanistan to help the Afghan people.”

When Jones first threatened last year to burn a Koran on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Petraeus was among several top U.S. officials who strongly urged against it and warned about the troubling consequences that could arise in Afghanistan. Jones eventually called off the event.

Then in January, Jones announced that he was going to “put the Koran on trial,” and said he didn’t hear a single complaint. The “trial” was held March 20, and the holy text subsequently burned.

Tensions erupted Friday when a mob, angry about the burning, attacked the United Nations compound in the northern Afghanistan city of Mazar-e-Sharif, killing seven U.N. employees and destroying the offices. Another bloody day followed in Kandahar, when police fought with protestors, leaving at least 9 dead and more than 80 others injured.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai, whose comments about the Koran burning brought it to the attention of many Afghans, raised the issue again in a statement Sunday. He said that in a national security council meeting he discussed the issue with U.S. officials and reiterated that “those people who are responsible for burning the holy Koran should be arrested soon.”
I don't think federalism and unity are antithetical. there are varying levels of federalism like ajanlekoko already pointed out.
Federalism and centralized gov't certainly are.

ex. the US is a federalist state and in fact, the central govt was strengthened more in the decades after their civil war of secession between the north and south.
I'm not sure that this is accurate? Federal gov't is very strong due to certain laws passed/institituions created, but the US States are FAR more independent than the Nigerian ones.

Right now Nigeria is a fake federalism.

when you give too much power to regions/states and too little to the central govt, the the chance of the country breaking up is very high because each region will want to do its own thing at the expense of the other regions.
Nigeria is already weak as it is so no need to weaken the central govt further unless you are for secession.
I don't think secession is a bad idea. I think if you thought about what would happen if naija didn't have any oil, you will agree.

The ruling governments of such countries don't like seeing Africa split along ethnic lines, because it threatens the territorial integrity of their own nation.

It sounds dumb to keep the stupid borders Europeans drew, but that is the status quo in Africa.

I don't expect their support; that is too much to ask for. But I don't want their active hostility.

Basically, if the AU unites and says, "Hey, we don't want this", then the UN typically is hesitant to intervene. UN doesn't want to get painted as colonialists meddling in the black man's business, etc.

Only thing I want from the AU is indecision and neutrality.
Politics › Re: G by ektbear: 2:35am On Apr 03, 2011
Musiwa: Let's put it this way. Even on this forum, people are tarring you as a foreigner from Benin Republic.

Now, what happens if this were made a legitimate movement? Then Nigeria, Ethiopia, and most of these countries tar it as the Benin Republic meddling in the affairs of Nigeria, etc. So it gets shut down immediately. Active opposition from the AU, opposition from the UN, etc.

Even if you one day want to unite SW Nigeria and the BR, imo you should first:

A) Get a referendum on independence
B) Secede if it is approved overwhelmingly (probably won't be a problem)
C) After independence, have merger talks with the BR.

That is a more sound gameplan.
Politics › Re: G by ektbear: 2:21am On Apr 03, 2011
Why aren't Germany and Austria one country? Romania and Moldova?

Honestly, these things aren't that big a deal. You are majoring in minor. Whether this proposed new state is absorbed into BR or a new nation, the issues facing the new state don't really change.

You only get more opposition from countries like Ethiopia (which has a substantial Somalia population), etc, etc.

I want those Africa countries to not actively oppose/sabotage our plans due to it threatening their own interest (or creating a bad precedent.)
