It is being starved of funds today. Lagos contributes far more in revenue to the Nigerian coffer than it gets back. And the FG purposefully doesn't build any infrastructure there, because it is an ACN state. Not to talk of all that port money that the FG gobbles up but doesn't share out. Maybe we should resort to militarism like these ND boys have. . . |
NYC isn't starved of funds by the US FG though Lagos otoh is gypped.$2 billion budget for 12 million+ people. . . 60%+ of the VAT revenue of Nigeria. . . yet only sees a small fraction of this money back. etc, etc. Pretty damn annoying. |
A more useful article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1360147/Taxpayers-fury-census-forms-printed-57-languages-including-Tagalog-Igbo-Shona.html My inference is that Yoruba has long been a census language. The newcomers like Tagalog, Igbo are what seems to be pissing off UK taxpayers. |
Where is the raw data, though? I'm very puzzled. Take a look at this article, for example: Although 71 visually impaired candidates applied for the UME, 65 actually wrote the examination. 16-year-old Irene Edem from Cross River State scored the highest mark of 310. Three others tied with a score of 308. They are Igugu O. Igugu, 23 years from Delta State, Konye Odinde, 18 years old also from Delta State and 47-year-old Raymond Moses-Gombo, from Delta State.http://nigeriaworld.com/articles/2009/feb/101.html So it doesn't quite look like the equivalent of SAT, which is taken by primarily juniors and seniors, not 23+ year olds? I really wish I could see the raw data. I'm puzzled. Consider this post for example here by (Ibime https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-237534.0.html#msg3497787): Forget all these excuses. We all know the South-West is more populated than the South-East, which is empty. No be today when Igbo people start to leave South-East Nigeria in their droves. Can you argue that Lagos State is less populated than Bayelsa State? If not, why does Bayelsa State have more University entrants than Lagos State? The simple fact is that the South-West and North need to get their act together. So I'm really wondering how the data is collected, if it somehow suggests Bayelsa State (least populous southern state) has more college admits than Lagos State (most populous.) Seems like someone is collecting or interpreting the data incorrectly. Or Bayelsa State folk are by far the most intelligent people in Africa (and I guess the world )Going to continue reading through this thread though. I went to the JAMB website. . . no raw data there. Anyone else have a link to this type of data? |
Ileke-IdI: ![]() Proly true. Let me first master being Yoruba first, then I'll master Ekiti afterwards ![]() honeric01:Hrm, seems the minorities don't like us very much. Not a good thing. . . |
@Ozin: What is Akwa Ibom State's annual budget? Interesting though: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-568817.0.html Seems that they have a high opinion of him indeed. I'll have to see with my own eyes one day. |
phantom:Naija isn't that small, lol. Anyway, I suggest we allocate more funds to improve Lagos and thus boost its rank/perception. . . ![]() |
Ouch @ aneyowa. . . that is pretty harsh ![]() Man I need to learn some insults fast to level up with that one ![]() |
^-- Yeah same here ![]() Maybe one of the more fluent Yoruba speakers can enlighten us. . . |
homerac7:Very informative post! honeric01:A certain lazy ignorance/arrogance that Yoruba people sometimes have It isn't good at all. We aren't sufficiently politically correct, unfortunately. |
1.5 million is a pretty big city. Yeah I've heard swell things about Calabar too. |
From what I've seen, Africans know that there is more than just generically "Nigerian." They are aware of Yoruba and Igbo, and how we sort of don't like each other ![]() The western world too is interacting more with educated Nigerians, so they are learning the differences. An example. . . www.jumo.com, a social networking site for charitable organizations founded by Chris Hughes (See his bio here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Hughes_(entrepreneur). Very interesting dude). As you might have guessed from the name: What does Jumo mean?http://www.jumo.com/faq So people are starting to learn. |
What is the data on the chart? JAMB, college admissions, college graduation, hs enrollment. . . ? I guess over some 6 year period; which one? And where is the raw data used to make that chart? Which states? |
Beaf:That is part of why I'd like to see whether any of these other naija cities are on the list. Always good to have objective, 3rd party commentary on how you (or your cities) are doing. I wonder though; you'd think that the large influx of people into Lagos suggests that it is at least superior to most of its competitors in West Africa. After all, people are voting with their feet. |
Beaf:Not trying to excuse the shutdown. . . but if TVC is Tinubu's property, then it seems odd that the guy was surprised. Like, how often does ABC take shots at Disney? I dunno, taking shots at your boss/owner in general is a dicey proposition. |
We shall see. I have not seen a man defeat Tinubu yet. At the same time, I've not seen GEJ truly fail politically. How does the saying go. . . "what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object?" I guess we are about to find out ![]() |
Where did he get this # from? I don't think any of the major organizations are predicting 12% next year. Is this his own personal guess, or informed by some sort of data. . . ? |
So they surveyed 140 cities in total. Wish I knew which cities were on it. . . but sort of unwilling to pay the $500 to access the full report. I wonder if they even looked at any other cities in Nigeria. I doubt any but Abuja would have fared better. Anyway, here is an overview: http://www.eiu.com/Handlers/WhitepaperHandler.ashx?fi=Liveability_rankings_Promotional_PDF_V02.pdf&mode=wp Seems to me that most cities in Nigeria likely will do even worse on these metrics (stability, healthcare, culture & environment, education infrastructure) than Lagos. Anyway, we definitely have got a long way to go in Lagos. No question about that. |
I've taken an intro philosophy course in college. Not very impressed. Easier than any class in a technical subject I took. I dunno, maybe it gets much harder the deeper you go, but I'm a bit skeptical. I agree with EzeUche regarding the importance of business. Econ/business are not bad to major in if you can get a gig at a good firm on wall street. Sefago is probably right about Hausa. "Talk softy but carry a big stick" seems to be their philosophy. . . you don't see mallams here running their mouth. But you feel their infuence while in naija ![]() |
If Tinubu is correct, then GEJ will lose. GEJ needs to cut a deal, fast. |
asha 80:Furthest east I've been in PH, so I'm not very familiar with the issues there. But I somehow had the impression that high pop densities place greater pressure on the land. Anyway, I'm sure you are right. |
^-- Why? What did he do to you? ![]() |
Omo ibo isn't even offensive. It is purely descriptive, is it not? Omo Ekiti, Omo Hausa, Omo Igbo. Should all be the same? I guess anything can be viewed as an insult depending on how it is said. . . maybe that is the point. |
^-- Oh, I thought it had some meaning in Igbo. Yeah, that isn't so offensive then, imo. You'd figure they'd choose a harsher insult ![]() |
Beaf:Beaf and his lust for blood ![]() |
What does 'Yoruba' even mean? And what is our equivalent term for Igbo? |
Tinubu fears no man or force in Nigeria. Simple as that. I don't even necessarily like the guy that much. . . at times I think he is a huge danger to Yorubaland. But whether you like him or not, he is untouchable. Best way to knock him off is to defeat him from within the ACN, imo. . . or have Yorubaland turn entirely against him (something that hasn't occurred yet.) But judiciary stuff? A judiciary system that Tinubu has mastered not only in the US, but also in Nigeria? Good luck with that. . .dude will eat your lunch. |
Turns out that she is an Ekiti woman ![]() |
Tinubu still taking shots @ GEJ: http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art20110227212695 Lol. We know how much Tinubu hates OBJ. Has he transferred this hatred onto GEJ, viewing GEJ as OBJ's sock puppet? ![]() |
So what exactly does the Igbo man want? I'm against subsidies, but don't mind the gov't helping you (and everyone) cut down cost of production. This imo is a wiser course of action than the outright buying of overpriced goods. Yet it seems that this is not good enough. So again, what do you want? |
