I said Alves created more chances for Messi than any other forward he played with and you're telling me about Xavi...You opined that strikers should create chances for themselves and in response I told you that most of Messi chances were created by Alves a RB and not his fellow strikers in a bid to show you the effect of Fullbacks in progressive football.
Because Alves took set plays.

Just like Ashley Young has created the highest chances in Manchester United this season.

I am watching matchday on Supersport 3 right now and Paul Scholes just corroborated everything I and a few others have been saying. He said we are better off attacking than defending thus he saw no reason why Ole made that sub.
He also said we don't have an identity with regards to the constant changes in formation. For him, there's no reason for us to line up with 3 CBs against Sheffield United irrespective of their current form.
When the talk of missing McTominay came up, he and Sherwood said that the fact we are missing McSauce shows how far the standard has dropped.

Elampiro, rather listen to Neville, you should pay more attention to Scholes.
Paul Scholes is an elementary analyst compared to Garry Neville. If Scholes is paid 50k to analyse, Neville will be paid 300k. If 1m people listen to Scholes, Neville will be listened to by 10m grin

I am saying with those guys behind them, they'd have looked way better...Alves created the most chances for Messi not Henry or Eto'o at any point or Villa or Ibra neither did Pedro or Cuenca. Xavi topped the assist chart at some point. Of late, Alba has done a good job making for for the creativity on the wings.

If what I have typed above isn't clear to you then we can move on to something else....
Messi mostly topped the chances created charts for Barca season after season except when Xavi or Fabregas displaced him. Sometimes Iniesta and Sanchez came higher than both Xavi and Alves.

Xavi vs Alves
2009/2010.....109/54
2010/2011 .....65/54
2011/2012....44/44
2012/2013.....47/36
2013/2014.....53/40

2015/16 Neymar 1st 102, Messi 2nd 77, Suarez 55, Rakitic 32, Inieta 22, Alves 21
2016/17 Neymay, Messi, Suarez

You were quick to call Alves and forgot to call Jodi Alba who was creating only 18, 19 chances. Don't you think Alba covered some lapses in the defence when may Pique will have to go cover for Alves. Bissaka can be our Alba.

Are you saying that Messi, Suarez and Griezemann will be comfortable with Fred and Pereira behind them? Will a coach that starts 5 defenders against a relatively weak opposition excite a Barcelona fan?

Are you underestimating the importance of a great supporting cast? Will Barcelona and Messi win the same number of trophies with Fred, Pereira and McTominay behind them rather than Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets? Will they be so dominant with Wan-Bissaka and Young/Williams rather than Alves and Abidal/Alba?
Are you saying Xavi and Iniesta would have been comoftable with Martial, Rashford and James in front on them?

The problem with your argument is that you're looking at Nani as an individual without taking into context the quality of players he played with. In that clip you shared, I could see Evra, Anderson, Park, Rooney who are all better than what we currently parade...

I'm sure if you look at the starting line up of that team, even De Gea will struggle to displace Van Der Sar. Now imagine a Martial or Rashford in that team surrounded with top players and a world class coach in Fergie, won't they look better? At least I'm certain Martial is a very good dribbler.
Then what are we saying? Our attacking forward are substandard when collectively rated. Which is why our chances creation ability is below expectation.

Nevertheless, Nani was best at what he was known for 'minus a defender' swiftly to create a huge space. No one again has been able to do that.
............

“Of all the players I’ve played with during my career, if I wanted someone to beat someone 1 vs 1 & it was do or die he would have been one of my first picks for sure. He can go either way, off either foot, tricky & lightening quick – a defenders nightmare!

The above statement by Rio Ferdinand summarises my argument. Nani was better than Ronaldo in minusing a defender in a tight space while not in motion. I stand, you stand and I still dribble you. Rashford and Martial should not come into this kind of debate.

Some weeks back, I think it was Nani's birthday, clips of his goals and skills flooded Twitter and he was getting all the praise whilst most folks spent time demeaning our current crop but I like a few others knew too well it was the same Nani much like Rashford and Martial that frustrated fans when he was here maybe he was a bit better but then, he played with much better players and he was more experienced. I have seen Rashford chop defenders with that move, Martial too has his fair share of great moments but you can't compare how easier it was to play alongside the crop of players we had then and now.
Nani was not frustrating. At one time he was at CR7 level. That should be when Antonio Valencia broke his leg and Nani was the one giving assits and creating space for the team. He was only frustrating to those who expected him to have the consistency and productivity of CR7. As for me, I just needed him to be the space creator when matches became hard. Today we need another person like that.

Rashford and Martial are not in same level with Nani in terms of opening space with dribbling. They arw far below. But it terms of goal scoring, they are better than Nani.

Overall, we dont have the right mic of forward players we should have. Dribblers, scorers, intellihent passers, strong in the air.

Lol you talk as if it was just Nani and Berbatov just so you can have a go at the ones you despair. In that move, Evra was pivotal. Notice when he reverse the pass to Berbatov he kept bombing forward and in the edge of the box you had Anderson with Rooney and Park dragging defenders all over the place. In one attack, we have 5 players in or around the box. On Sunday it wasn't the case until we were 2 goals down.
Our full.backs, Young, Luke, etc also keep bombing forward. Don't make it look like out full backs dont cross the half line.

Nani's beaking that defnder opened that space. Without that skill, all the effort will amount to nothing. This is the probem today, our forwards lack the dribbling skillls to indibudially open huge space.

The Nani's break created the chance. Our forward players would have cross the ball into traffic. And we will begin to say how many chances did the forward players get to score?

See Berbatov pass.

According to whoscored rating, Chris Smalling is among currently the best playesr in Serie A. Best X1

Smalling has 2 goals, 1 Assist, from 9 league games.
If he were in United, he would be said to be the most useless defender in the top four teams. He will be seen to be highly uncoordinated, panic under pressure and the reason the forwards don't get supply with his inaccurate passing from the rare.

If I were him, I would not even come back. Jones should do same. These guys held theirs under SAF in absense of Vidic and Ferdinand. They still did a job for Gaal.

Our best bet is a 4-3-3 especially against small teams. The 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2 should only apply when we are up against the big team.

Back to the game, playing 3 CBs against Sheffield United is stuff of mediocrity.

Greenwood is not Messi and please don't make my point about him, I said we'd have been better off with Greenwood or Lingard starting in place of Jones and that's my annoyance with Ole. He left our Midfield exposed to the pressure of Sheffield because they simply had more bodies in the centre. If you're okay with such negative lineup against Sheffield United, I am not and never will be...
So you think Ole did not read the way Shefield United play before coming up with that formation? And you know every team has assistant coaches who give reports about opposition teams, there are many statistics at the disposal of the management team. Your own thinking might just be 20% of what they had to consider to draw a formation and match tactics.

Apples and oranges...Against Chelsea, when Martial was brought on who was taken off and what was our front line like? I am telling you that taking off Jones who shouldn't have started and Pereira off for Lingard and Greenwood as well as pushing our fullbacks forward is the boldest move Ole has made since he was appointed. For a start, I would have started either one of Greenwood or Lingard in place of Jones and I believe we would've been better for it.

Talking about Greenwood, it is funny you're comparing him to Chicharito. You said "might" meaning you're not certain how it would have panned out so, why the Chicharito comparison? Why not use another striker who has gone on to be a success here like Rooney? It's not like Greenwood plays like Chicharito sef.

You need to understand that football has changed, it has move on from the days when the primary responsibility of a defender was to defend. Nowadays, attacks starts from the back, Ederson and Alisson are renowned for thier dangerous long kicks from the back. if a defender's primary responsibility is to defend then Mangala would still be at City.
Your argument is flawed when you said Jones should not have started. You guys are the one who blames the coach for not sticking to winning formation 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2 ,etc but playing 4-2-3-1 which doesnt work. Now he plays his working formation, you are talking about Greenwood. When has Greeneood become Messi?

Against Chelsea, Lidelof was taken off for Martial. Are you saying we should have started with one less defender? It is best to start a match normal, situation might call for the abnotmal. I dont know anytime SAF had to start two or three players at the back. It was always four. Even Carrick had played CB to complete the back three.

Mangala is not even a good tackler to start with.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 11:49am On Nov 26, 2019
The major problem I see in Man United team is very simple. They cannot breakdown a tightly packed defence. . You need good dribblers who can dribble really good and fast to do that.

When that is not working, you should have good forward players scoring from outside the box with accurate shots (bullets) on target. Also good headers to nod in from set plays and crosses. Simple.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 11:44am On Nov 26, 2019
patrickmuf:
I can't remember.

The question is simple, do you think we'd have fared better if Greenwood started in place of Jones?

And when you say it was a formation change, what formation were we playing when Martial, Rashford, James, Lingard and Greenwood were all on the pitch?

What is your take on Williams goal, should he have joined the attack in that instance or stayed back expecting the strikers to score?
Try to stay on one line of argument? You are getting yourself confused and widening the argument for no reason?

You asked when Ole went out for all attacking and I gave you an instance of Chelsea's match. I know too I have seen others, but I cannot keep record. I am a very busy man.

Greenwood starting the game might even have been worse. When SAF started Chicharito, he went on ghost mode on the pitch 80% of the matches (except may be playing against sluggish Chelsea defenders at the time). But when a game is hard and Chicha is brought in as an xtra man in the dying minutes when everyone is tired, his speed and swiftness became a huge advantage.

On Willian, you are still getting it wrong. Defenders and goalkeepers can sometimes attack and score but it is not their primary responsibilities.

Give me other instances when Ole has gone all out to chase a game...At some point, we had Rashford, James, Martial, Greenwood and Lingard all on the pitch. That's 5 attacking players as against 3 in the first half and you think it's rocket science that we did better in the 2nd half.
In our cup match against Chelsea, Lindelof was removed for Martial when Chelsea equalized. Ole has done this a few times, sometimes it didnt work. Again, vs Shefield United, it was more of a formation change.

It is not the first time we have changed formation or sacrificed a defender for a forward player. We had 5 defenders starting playing 3-4-2-1.

I think you are rigid to your beliefs about what is wrong with United. Try to reason wide

Neville is talking about joke, what an irony.

In the same game we saw the front 3 come alive in the 2nd half not like we replaced them with Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez so why is no one rather talking about the fact that Ole goofed with his team selection and tactics in the first half or is it because he is a legend? I am certain that if Mou was the coach, Neville would have had other things to say.
Neville is not the only one who has said that.

The lack of movement we saw happened when Greenwood came in. If he didnt run into position for the second goal, Rasdford would had not one to pass to. That is an instance.

Please watch the 1st and 2nd half again. In the first half, the forwards were left to do it all on their own. In the 2nd half, our fullbacks pushed higher up the pitch same as the two midfielders and our centre backs were stationed just around the midfield area making the field compact and helping us recover possession in more dangerous areas.
We had more bodies in attack thus it was more difficult for Sheffield to keep their shape. It's what was on display, go and watch the match again and don't just depend on flash score for who scored or who assisted to draw conclusions.

“The lack of front movement from Martial, Rashford and James is a joke,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“It really is an absolute joke. All game. Nothing at all from them.

“Manchester United’s midfield is poor but you expect better from that front three.

“If you asked Chris Wilder to swap McGoldrick and Mousset for Martial and Rashford, he would say no.”

“They weren’t even good out of possession, they weren’t closing down Sheffield United but they have quality.”
