Nigeria Releases List of 774 National Health Fellows for Cohort 2

Abuja, January 18, 2026 — Nigeria has officially announced the release of the list of 774 National Health Fellows selected for Cohort 2 of the National Health Fellows (NHF) Programme, marking a major milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its health system through youth leadership and grassroots engagement.

The list of successful candidates, representing all 36 states, the FCT, and each of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas, will be published from midnight on January 18, 2026, across the programme’s official social media platforms and in The Nation Newspaper, with nationwide circulation.

The National Health Fellows Programme brings together a new generation of young professionals prepared to learn, serve, and contribute meaningfully to improving Nigeria’s health system. Each Fellow was selected from their local government area of origin, reflecting a deliberate strategy to identify, develop, and return community-rooted talents to strengthen health outcomes where they matter most—at the grassroots.

Speaking on the significance of the release, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, described the programme as a bold investment in Nigeria’s future health leadership.

According to him, the Fellowship is founded on the belief that leadership potential exists across Nigeria’s health system, even in areas where opportunity has historically been limited. By embedding Fellows within real health system environments at the federal, state, and local levels, the programme seeks to unlock this potential through structured learning, service, and accountability.

Professor Pate emphasized that selection into the Fellowship is not merely an accolade but a responsibility, noting that Fellows are expected to engage directly with health system challenges, support service delivery, strengthen coordination, and improve processes while learning under supervision.

“The nationwide distribution of one Fellow per Local Government Area reflects a clear reform philosophy—that excellence is not confined to a few centres, but equitably distributed across the country,” he said. “Sustainable reform is strongest when it is rooted in local ownership.”

He added that by investing in individuals who belong to the communities they serve, the programme strengthens trust, cultural understanding, and continuity, ensuring that health system transformation is durable and community-driven.

As the Fellows prepare to assume their responsibilities, they do so with the understanding that public trust must be earned through humility, service, and results.

On behalf of the leadership of the health sector and the implementing teams nationwide, Professor Pate congratulated all Cohort 2 Fellows, as well as their families and communities, describing them as “Stars. Everywhere.”

The National Health Fellows Programme is implemented by the Government of Nigeria through the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (SWAp) Coordination Office under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and is a key pillar of ongoing health sector reforms aimed at building a resilient, people-centred health system.

With a CGPA of 4.78/5.00, a 23 year old Nigerian lady (an indigene of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, a proud member of the Paul-Worika Family and the Worika Group of Houses), Pharm. While I was was still working as an intern at an engineering firm back in 2021, some year 3 students came for their IT. One of the females was assigned under me, and we worked closely. Road 24, Agip Estate.

I stepped out of the house to pay my utility bill while the sky was ablaze with the fire of the setting sun.

I was walking smartly along Road 24 and before I crossed to the other side of the road where I'd carry out the transaction, I heard two voices calling me and trying to buy my attention.

I looked back to find 3 roughnecked guys seated outside a bar with a table of drinks before them, puffing smoke into the air and obviously having a good time.

Because I was unsure about their intentions having scrutinised their outlook, I hesitantly gestured to them that I was coming to meet them soon.

I took my time to pay the bill and when I was done, crossed over to the road to see the “akpa men” or rather, the “ss3 boys” who sent for me.

After some handshakes with them which I dished out fearlessly one after the other, one of them asked, “You remember us?”

“No, I no sure say I remember this face.” I replied with sheer tenacity. Cos me no dey too deal with these men. So yes, I no sabi them. However, they all appeared different from how I judged them from afar, they all had very gentle smiles.

“But you been work for BMH abi?” the second guy whose eyes were bathed in pink asked.

“Yes, I been work there 2021,” I said with budding enthusiasm.

“I talk am. Na you na. Shebi na that BMH wey dey old GRA?” he further asked.

“Exactly, na him.” I replied like a cuffed criminal in an interrogation room.

“Na you been save our brother life one night wey we bring am come,” the second guy said assertively, “I recognise this your white hair.”

At that point, my whole life in 2021 flashed briefly before my eyes, trying to search and remember the scenario. I did that for close to two minutes, while they kept asking me to think. But to no avail.

“I no fit really remember baba,” I said like one who had just given up on a quest.

“No worry, na you. You really try that night. God bless you my brother. Just dey save lives dey go. Come join us drink nau.”

“No worry chairman. I really dey in a hurry. Thanks, una too much.”

The first dude legit dipped his hand into his Jean pocket and gave me some money. I was dumbstruck!

How could I accept a token of appreciation when I couldn't remember specifically the reason for the appreciation.

What if it was someone else they mistook for me?

All these flashed through my mind as I accepted the cash and buried it in my shoulder pouch. I left the scene to my house puzzled and confused. I found the cash to be ₦7,000.

Roughly 15 minutes after I arrived home, I was eating boiled corn when like a flood, the memory ravished my brain. It all become clear and started playing out like a Netflix movie on the screen of my mind.

“Eureka!”Like Archimedes shouted, “I found it.”

It all happened on the 29th October 2021, I was on (night) call duty in the Laboratory of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital where I worked as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (graduate intern).

2 men came to the blood bank unit confused and throughly worried. Their “brother” as they called him, had an emergency case and was losing a lot of blood.

They had earlier transfused 2 pints, 1 the night before and 1 that morning. The doctor had requested for another pint that night.

Their brother was blood group O negative and needed exactly another O negative blood donor. There was non available and no donor on ground and time was running out.

I had a talk with one of them and trust me, when a man is afraid, you'll know and can feel it. We gisted and I cracked some jokes which we all laughed to in the midst of the chaos.

I saw and felt the urgency of the situation and the risk involved, so I told the staff I worked with that night, “I'm O negative, I'd like to donate for them.”

The staff didn't question my offer to help because she was also aware of the situation on ground.

She screened me, my blood and as soon as I got a medical “all-clear” and eligibility to donate, a pint of blood was withdrawn from me and handed over to them after every necessary medical documentation.

“Oya make una take go give una brother,” she said. They were both confused and immediately began thanking her while worrying about how to pay later.

“No thank me. Thank this my fellow worker wey dey here,” she said while pointing to me where I was resting.

They thanked me briefly and hurried off. In less than 15 minutes, they were back. They approached me and showered words of gratitude to me and begged that they'll pay me before their brother was discharged.

“Make una no worry. E don tay wey I donate sef. As the blood dey excess, I say make I give una.” I laughed while seeing them off.

What if I hadn't donated?
What if they ran out of time?
What if, what if, what if?
Maybe their brother could've died.

Now I understood why they said I saved their brother's life, indeed!

I smiled softly after I was done in memory lane and felt the urge to go back there to tell them, “I remember una now.”

But it wasn't necessary.

Drama ensued at a restaurant after a Nigerian lady ordered food which cost N12,000 while on a date with a guy.

The young lady asked him not to blow the situation out of proportion, saying that she just needed to call someone and it will all be sorted out.

A waitress who attended to them in the restaurant could be seen standing behind the lady, waiting for the payment while the two continued the verbal exchange.

When the man insisted on not helping her to pay for the meal, the lady regretted and noted that she made a mistake by agreeing to go on a date with him.

Ijeoma Chinonyerem made a great investigation into the viral d£ath of Ugochukwu Okpani...

This guy's death trended last week. He made a post that he got a scholarship to do his masters on international relations in the UK. He was congratulated and everyone was happy. Then a night to his relocation, he died in his hometown Afikpo, in Ebonyi state.

Ijeoma followed up with the case and discovered the following:

1. They found out that this guy that posted he got a masters scholarship in a UK university dropped out of UNIZIK. He doesn't even have a Bsc to begin with. So how did he magically get a masters scholarship without a Bsc degree?

2. The school he claimed gave him the scholarship on international relations doesn't even offer that course in Msc.

3. People reached out to the school and they said his name is not in their database and they have no affiliations with him.

4. He claimed he was moving abroad a day before he died but he was still in Afikpo that night he was supposed to leave. How can you be moving abroad on 13th yet on the night of 12th, you are still in your village?

5. He never booked flight to Lagos or Abuja cos those are the 2 places you go follow comot Nigeria.

6. He never booked any flight abroad whatsoever. No flight to the UK, US, anywhere. Not even packed a single bag for his so-called trip.

7. He had not one single travel document. Not even an international passport. So how was he supposed to travel?

8. No celebration party was thrown for him. Yet people made it seem like his friends poisoned him.

This man came on social media platforms to make posts about getting a scholarship to study abroad and give his travel date. Went to bed, woke up complaining of stomach ache and died. People say it was sniper.
Doesn't that point to swicide? Especially since according to his family, nobody visited him and he didn't hang out the night before.

But no. It's more sensational to trend the story that his friends kieled him out of jealousy.

Hopefully, Nigerians would start doing autopsy one day.

Personally, I think this was carefully orchestrated by him. He intentionally wanted to set up his friends for his swicide.

Maybe his lies caught up with him and he had to end it all or maybe the lies were a part of his swicide plan. We don't know. But It's one thing to unalive yourself. It's another thing to do it in such a way that it would look like a murda.

The sad part is that most of the people who read that story will run with it without knowing there are layers to it.
Even sadder is that people who were his friends would always be looked at with suspicion.

Only a man would think of using his own swicide to set up his friends/loved ones for murder.
The irony of making it look like his friends were the horrible people when actually, the reverse is the case.

First is a picture of himself hanging on the wall ... Saying he HUNG himself.... and announcing his own obituary.

Second is a picture of himself looking at himself in the mirror... That's a moment of self introspection and reflection.

Then there's a picture of himself looking showing his watch... The message is that IT IS TIME TO GO.

and then there's a picture of him looking at his wardrobe - probably the only thing he would leave behind. That's about legacy and those he would leave behind.

Now notice that 3 out of the 4 pictures were taken on the same day... He wanted to pass a message but we never understood it...

That's a sign that he has been trying to get our attention all through out his life but we never understood him and even in death, we misunderstood Him.

People die from lack of attention - pay closer attention. You will get the signs.

Friends mourn Nigerian man who died today hours before his flight to the UK for his Masters programme

According his friends, late Okpani Ugochukwu secured a scholarship for a Masters progranme in a UK University and was to leave Nigeria today. He shared a post on his Facebook wall on Thursday night bidding farewell to his friends and informing them he will be leaving for the UK the next day. His friends say he slept and did not wake up Friday May 19.

They have taken to social media to express their sadness over his sudden demise.

On Monday, this beautiful and innocent looking lady visited her boyfriend and caught him red handed cheating.

She was hurt so badly by his action which led her to cry before she damaged his car, windows and broke his TV.

Yesterday, she was arrested.
