Nairaland GeneralTinubu, southern Christians cannot be president in 2023 - ACF chief Abdulrahman by Elemosho478(op): 8:50pm On Jul 01, 2019
- Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman says Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the APC cannot be president of Nigeria in 2023

- Abdulrahman hinges his argument on belief that Asiwaju Tinubu is not a strong Muslim as he called the politician two-faced

- The chieftain of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) also stresses that no Christian from the southern part of the country would succeed Buhari

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) cannot take over from Muhammadu Buhari as the president of Nigeria in 2023, Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman, a chieftain of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has said.

Abdulrahman, an analyst and former secretary of the political committee of the ACF, also maintained that no Christian from the southern part of the country can be president in the next election.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Sun, Abdulrahman said even though a Muslim Yoruba can be president, it cannot be Tinubu.

“I think that Bola Tinubu cannot be president of Nigeria. He will not be unless as president of Oduduwa Republic. That is the way I see it.

A Muslim Yoruba can be president of Nigeria, but Tinubu is ChrisMus. You know what ChrisMus is? It means somebody who is a Christian and a Muslim. Tinubu is ChrisMus. He may be the son of Iyaoloja, but he is not in control now of the real Lagos people who do the voting.

“I hope you still remember how we handled the Abiola issue when I was very close to Abacha. It is impossible as I see it for a Christian to be president of Nigeria now. For now, it is impossible, certainly not in 2023,” Abdulrahman emphasised in the interview.

He called Tinubu ‘double-faced’ Muslim, who keeps people wondering where he actually belongs.

He tasked the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to curb insecurity in the country and tread softly in picking his cabinet members, especially with the complaint of people that the south east should not get much because the people there did not vote massively for him.

They (the government) need to put back life in Nigeria the way we used to drive in our vehicles to Abuja and back. They need to clear the road from Abuja to Kaduna. But let me tell you that the south and north issue has to do with religion.

“How we are going to get a Muslim Yoruba is what is going to make a southerner be president of Nigeria as one country. A southern Christian cannot be president of Nigeria. That is why Abiola won election even in Kano,” he said

He also lamented the challenge former governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha, is facing within the APC.

According to him, Okorocha stood with the APC through thick and thin only to be pushed and held by the tongue in spite of his popularity in the north.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) was yet to react at the time of this report.

Nairaland GeneralNo South West Land Is Available For Ruga Settlements - Yoruba Elders by Elemosho478(op): 8:24pm On Jul 01, 2019
- The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) says there is no space for the Ruga settlements in the entire south west zone

- The elders ask all the the governors in the zone to harmonise a common decision and stand their ground against the proposed project

- The organisation says it is surprised that the federal government is behind the proposal

The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) on Monday, July 1, rejected the proposed establishment of Ruga settlements in any of the states in the south west zone.

The elders warned that no part of Yoruba land has space for the project adding that the proposal by the federal government was ‘dead on arrival’ in the zone.

The Nation reports that in a statement by the president of the YCE, Dansaaki Ade Agbede, in Ibadan, Oyo state, the organisation wondered how a group of people seen as threats to peace and security of others would own settlements in places outside their domains.

“To now think that the federal government that should be concerned and worried about the untoward activities of such people is the sponsor of Ruga is worrisome.

“Such a project is not at all in the best interest of this country as well as PMB’s presidency and the earlier the federal government listens to the voice of the people by disembarking on the project, the better,” the Agbese said.

The organisation insisted that the recent experience of the people of Yoruba land in the hands of herdsmen “leaves much to be desired with our spirit of openness and accommodation being eroded. We can’t fold our arms and allow our land to be overrun by strangers.”

The elders urged the governors of Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti and Osun to be on guard and make the decision of the people known to the federal government.

“This is not about politics or political party affiliation. It is about patriotism and responsibility to the people that elected them into office.

Nairaland GeneralItalians Say Nigerian Cult Has Taken Over Their Streets, Cry For Help by Elemosho478(op): 11:53am On Jul 01, 2019
Italians are blaming a Nigerian cult for the crime sweeping through their streets.

The Nigerian cult has been accused of promoting a life of prostitution and drugs in Italy’s dark and narrow alleys; from the north in Turin to the south in Palermo.

The Washington Post writes that “Italian investigators say the Nigerian syndicate meets the definition of a mafia, rather than a criminal gang, because it has a behavior code and uses the implied power of the group to intimidate and silence”.

According to the Italian intelligence agency, the Nigerian mafia has become “the most structured and dynamic” of any foreign crime entity operating in Italy.

The birth of the Nigerian mafia

The Nigerian mafia began making its presence felt across Europe in the 1980s, according to reports.

In recent years, however, the Nigerian mafia has not only expanded its operational territory, it has also pushed into the one Italian territory where no foreign mob had dared to go.

The Italian city of Sicily was raided by Greeks, Byzantines and Normans. The Cosa Nostra—which specializes in racketeering, gambling and killing-- used to be the most famous Mafiosi in Italy. Not anymore.

The Washington Post writes that the Nigerian cult, complete with their ritual handshakes, color-coded blue and yellow outfits—have become lords of the manor in Italy's crime scene.

“Today’s Sicily is different. Cosa Nostra is hobbled. Its leaders have been imprisoned, one after the next. The group has grown quieter, less openly violent, and over the past decade, a new wave of people has come — hundreds of thousands of Africans, arriving in Sicily, Italy’s de facto front door for migrants until Salvini closed ports last year. Many of the migrants have moved on to other parts of Italy, and even Europe. But some have stayed.

“Investigators say they first saw signs of the Nigerian mafia presence here in 2013 with an uptick in violent assaults. Two years later, evidence emerged that the new group might be cooperating in the drug trade with Sicilian mafia: A taped conversation showed two Cosa Nostra higher-ups describing the Nigerians as “tough young’uns” who are dangerous but know their place. That peace between the groups has held ever since.

“Authorities say that may be because the Nigerian mafia has built much of its business on the one thing Cosa Nostra has never shown an interest in: prostitution”.

Keeping the mafia in check

The Nigerian mafia’s Palermo hub is described as a neighborhood of dilapidated buildings, tight alleys, food vendors and motor scooters zipping by.

Italy’s far right political parties have been trying to shut out migrants for years because of the Nigerian mafia.

Matteo Salvini , Italy’s most prominent politician, says the “African crime bosses pose a growing threat that needs to be eradicated immediately.”

However, Pope Francis thinks it is wrong to blame Nigerians solely for the crime on Italy’s inner city streets. “It was not Nigerians who invented the mafia”, Pope Francis says, “the mafia is ours, made in Italy”.

In any case, the Nigerian mafia continues to be accused of building Italy into a European hub of cocaine smugglers from South America, heroin dealers from Asia, and trafficking women by the tens of thousands from Benin city in southern Nigeria.

PoliticsRuga: List Of 11 States FG Approved For Herdsmen Settlement by Elemosho478(op): 11:27am On Jul 01, 2019
The Federal Government has approved the planned RUGA settlements across the country in spite of criticisms it garnered.

The RUGA settlement scheme will take off its pilot phase in Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Sokoto, Nasarawa, Kogi, Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara and Niger states.

According to a source at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, everything is set for the implementation of the scheme.

“The pilot states for its implementation are Sokoto, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Kogi, Taraba, Katsina, Plateau, Kebbi, Zamfara and Niger,” the source told Punch.

“They are actually 11 in number and the governors of these states are coming to the ministry to learn how the Ruga settlements will be implemented,” a senior official at the FMARD, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

It added that “These are the states that have fully shown their interest. But unfortunately, people are talking about this as if the Federal Government is planning to grab land in the states.

“That’s not true. The plan is mainly for these states that are ready and the Federal Government had a discussion with the governors concerned.

“Some of the governors came here and they promised to provide land because they have seen the benefits they will derive from the initiative. It is not that the Federal Government wants to invade the states, no!”

On whether the government will go ahead with the move despite public outcry, the source asked, “Why not? Of course, the government will go ahead with the programme, particularly in states that are willing to have it. For states that are not interested, no problem.”

TravelCommercial Operations Begin On Lagos-ibadan Railway In September –NRC by Elemosho478(op): 11:12am On Jul 01, 2019
The transportation of passengers, goods and services on a commercial basis will commence on the Lagos-Ibadan railway between September and October this year, the Nigeria Railway Corporation has said.

It was also gathered from the NRC that commercial services will start on the Itakpe-Warri rail line in August this year, while the movement of trains from Iju in Lagos State to Ibadan in Oyo State had commenced.

The Managing Director, NRC, Fidet Okhiria, who spoke to reporters in Abuja, noted that while some coaches for the Lagos-Ibadan rail line were already the ground, about 10 more were being expected in a couple of months.

He said, “Right now, you can ride on the train from Iju in Lagos to Ibadan in Oyo State. And we are hoping that in the next three to four months the coaches we ordered will come in. Two coaches have already come in but we don’t want to start with the big coaches because the price will be too much.

“So, we are expecting the normal coaches to come in and nothing stops us from operating them. We have two that have already come in but the Chinese called me recently that we may go for inspection for the next set of coaches soon because we must go there to check their performance before they (Chinese) ship them.”

On the number of coaches being expected, he replied, “We are expecting a set of 10 at first. It is about sixty coaches.”

Okhiria also spoke about moves by the NRC to commence the sales of tickets online, as he noted that over 112 firms submitted bids for the initiative.

He said, “When we advertised this, it took long because over 112 companies submitted bids and so we had to be pruning them until we got about three that came first, second and third. And that is the stage we are right now.

“So we have to make sure that due diligence is followed because once we start it, we will have to extend it to other areas and not just on the Abuja-Kaduna route.”

He said the NRC wanted a situation where the ticketing process would be genuine and where there would be adequate security in the exercise.

On the Itakpe-Warri route, the NRC boss said, “We are operating the Itakpe-Warri line and I think we should go commercial in August. We have not gone commercial because of the place to sell tickets. We are preparing smaller stations where people can buy tickets because we don’t want to sell tickets on the train to avoid ticket racketeering.”

When asked whether the government would connect the rail line from Itakpe in Kogi State to Abuja, Okhiria noted that there had been approval for it.

“There is an approval for a private company to do Warri to the ports and from Itakpe to Abuja. Also, there is another approval for us to source for funds to do Port Harcourt to Warri, Benin and Agbor. All these tracks cannot be lower than standard gauge. There is nothing like narrow gauge again because it is obsolete,” he said.

Nairaland GeneralIBEDC Begins Deployment Of Distribution Transformer Meters by Elemosho478(op): 9:03am On Jun 11, 2019
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company has begun the deployment of Distribution Transformer meters to all public distribution transformers under its franchise using an Advanced Metering Infrastructure solution for accuracy.

Mr John Ayodele, the Chief Operating Officer of company, made this known in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Monday.

Ayodele said that the metering was part of the company’s drive to provide quality service to customers under its franchise areas.

He said, “With the installation of these meters and the deployment of the AMI technology, IBEDC will be able to measure the actual energy consumption of customers in real-time.

“This initiative will greatly benefit customers as the smart meters will ensure better energy accounting and accountability, thereby making estimated bills more accurate and reliable.

“It will enable us to reduce our response time to fault-clearing and improve on our operational efficiency as the AMI solution can detect if there is a fault with a transformer and communicate this information in real time to our control room.

“This will make fault-clearing faster as the time wasted on patrolling the lines to locate the fault is eliminated.’’

Ayodele noted that the company’s technical team and authorised contractors had already begun the deployment of the smart meters and configuring some of the transformers to enable them to be compatible with the AMI solution.

He said: “We are appealing for the cooperation and understanding of our esteemed customers as our technical officers will require access to transformers that are situated within customers’ premises as well as also those safeguarded by communities.’’
