“BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE; BE PROUD OF WHERE YOU COME FROM” - SPEAKER NWIFURU TO AMB. OMINYI

The Honourable Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly - Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has handed his love and warm regards to His Excellency, Amb. Ominyi Nwannebuike Eze - Nigerian High Commissioner to the Republic of Zambia, as he begins his new role in that Southern part of Africa.

Speaker Nwifuru, who was in full company of the Distinguished Honourable Members of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, praised the newly appointed Ambassador for the wisdom and sensitivity he has shown in informing the State of his departure to the Republic of Zambia.

Amb. Ominyi, who was on a farewell visit to the Honourable Speaker, thanked the Honourable Members for keeping their faith steady in his abilities and trusting in him, when the announcement of his appointment as an Ambassador designate came in.

“I want to thank you Sir, for your vote of confidence and goodwill towards me. As a House of Assembly, I know that if you had written a negative report about me to Mr. President, I wouldn't have succeeded, but most of you have already sent congratulatory messages to me. I want to let you know that as the Law requires, I have appeared before the Nigerian Senate, was screened and confirmed. After that we have been inducted and I’ve received my letter of credence from Mr. President.

“By that Sir, I’m at the verge of leaving the country anytime this month, and that is why I considered it necessary to come and inform you, the leaders, that your son, your citizen who has this assignment, is leaving for Zambia to represent Nigeria, as Her High Commissioner. Our duty is to market Nigeria and deepen the trade, security and other relations Zambia has with us.” - Amb. Ominyi said.

Responding to the visit, the clearly elated Speaker Nwifuru, thanked Amb. Ominyi and urged him to remain proud of who he is and where he comes from.

“When I received the letter to inform me of your travel to the Republic of Zambia, I said to myself that you’re a good politician. Others have been on such assignments but they left without anyone knowing. You have started differently and your successes must be mightily different.

“I want to assure you of our support and prayers. Zambia is a very good country. They love us so much especially the Igbo people and I’m very sure that you’ll make the relationship even better.

“So as you begin your new assignment, be proud of who you are. Be proud of where you come from - be proud of this State, be proud of Ebonyi North and Nigeria when you get there. We’re very much proud of you. We ask God to bless, guide, direct you, and give you the strength, wisdom and understanding to discharge your assignment successfully.”

PoliticsChief Nwiboko Obodo Onyike by Elijahnonso1(op):
Know More About Chief Nwiboko Obodo

Chief Nwiboko Obodo was born at Idebya Iseke around 1905 as son of Chief Onwe Ali Obu Ali, whose grandfather came from Izah Mgbo, and his wife Iboko Una Onwe. As he was born on Iboko day, he was called Nwiboko Onwe. He grew with his uncle Obodo Onyike, a very wealthy man.

His father died in 1925 when he returned from settling a boundary dispute. Nwiboko then went to live in his father's compound in order to inherit his chieftaincy. It seemed he had good relationship with the British and soon he was made Paramount Chief. He was a good Chief, who first laboured and made his position strong.

He sent gifts to his surrounding villages. Anmegu receives cow as the village of his parents. He did well to obtain good image. In 1928 he was sent on a journey to the west to investigate other provinces, which were already paying tax. Among other places he visited were agbor, Benin, Ife, Ibadan and Oyo. By these he learnt much about the British Administration.

In Abakaliki, there have never been big problems about taxation. His power exercise especially through the native court of Nkwegu. In the court where his word is final. Of course they were many of other warrant Chiefs like Chief Idike, Okenwealgu from Ndubya Igbegu, Nwiboko Udede, Idenyi Nwonu and Mgbada Ochinta. Any government official who came to work at Abakaliki had to pay him a courtesy visit to avoid problem.

He established a "Police" Service, the Odozi Obodo Society. This was functioning in the other communities as well. They were to arrest ams punish anybody who stole or committed a serious criminal act.

Chief was very hospitable. He would never leave guests unfed. A group of dancers were always in his compound to entertain his guests. He used to do well to those who supported him. He rendered financial help to many young men who had reached the ages of marriage.

He was very rich, he farmed a large farm areas. Villagers and Iseke were persuaded to work for him. He owned about 4000 cows. Of course this was a curse for the surrounding farmers, but they were afraid to complain. Some have moved to another area because of his cows, which used to finish their crops. He owned 5 Cars, one for his private use and 4 commercial Vehicles. He also owned many canoes on the Ebonyi which passed people over the river for money. He also had many wives up to 28 of them. He built hundred of houses. He did not know even his family members. It happened that he wanted to marry a beautiful, but before the court the girl appeared to be one of his daughters.

He owned some banks in Abakaliki and also opened a bank in his compound. When a poor man visit him, he sometimes ask him to take as much money out of the bank as his hand could hold; because of his generosity, he was called "Nna" he sometimes paid the tax of a whole community out of pity; though later on, he will levy them for it.

He fearlessly went along with the whites. He made them enjoy his love and friendship. He was a middle man between the British and his people. He also helped the missionaries tremendously at Abakaliki and supported their schools. He established St. Nathy Catholic School at Iseke and the first secondary school in Izhi, the Izhi High School Iseke and 6 other schools in Izhi land. He gave land for Mile Four Hospital and Leprosy settlement.

He stimulated his people to be educated. He strongly opposed the influence of the Igbos in Abakaliki and did not allow any Igbo to get a certificate of occupancy over any piece of land in Abakaliki. He was real patriot. He did much good for Abakaliki, but he also has his shortcomings.

He hatred opposition and stifled it wherever he could. He presented himself as god. He used to boast; "Owaa Igwe, Owaa Ali, Owaa mueda bu Nwiboko Obodo; Ono ganyi haa nwere Uwa" (this is heaven, this is earth and this is me Nwiboko Obodo, three of them owned the world. He was taken as a god and nobody dared to speak against him.

Jealousy and opposition were underneath however, several people missed in Idebya Iseke when the activities of the Odozi Obodo society went out of control. They sometimes acted against their personal enemies. The chief tried to curtail them, knowing that he would be blamed for those excesses, but to no avail. They even once threatened to take his life.

His downfall came in 1957............to be continued.

Times source...

In the vast British tropical colony of Nigeria, the back-country people of the Eastern Region have long been a troublesome lot to officialdom. Mostly half-naked farmers, they take unusual delight in staging bloody campaigns against vaccinations, and in setting schools on fire. Each time the police must come in to restore order. But of all the assignments that the police have undertaken, none has produced such eerie results as the search of the house of Chief Nwiboko Obodo.
For months reports had poured in of a high homicide rate around the tiny town of Abakaliki, about 50 miles from the Eastern Region capital of Enugu. Men would go to their farms of a morning and simply disappear; women went to market and never came home. Police found evidence that since 1954 there had been more than 100 murders in Abakaliki. But it was not until they raided Chief Obodo’s house that they found the reason why.
Inside, they discovered rope, leg irons, and swords, as well as an assortment of juju charms bearing the warning that all men and women in the 14 villages around “must respect me and do whatever I say.” It soon turned out that the chief was a member of a secret cult that inappropriately bears the name of Odozi Obodo, the “Committee of the Peacemakers.”
The most powerful arm of the society was a sort of Murder Inc. squad called Exepute, meaning “the Chief says . ..” It was the Exepute that carried out the grisly justice of the society against anyone who balked at paying the “taxes” the chiefs whimsically imposed, or against those whom the chiefs merely disliked. For the chiefs, murder was also a lucrative business: by tradition, they inherit “all property of the dead, including wives and children.
Last week, while Chief Obodo languished in jail and his British counsel, Dingle Foot (brother of Cyprus Governor Sir Hugh Foot), prepared his defense, one of his sidekicks, Chief Idaka Igboji, faced trial for murder, along with ten accomplices. A steady stream of witnesses —those who dared talk—told tales of death by drowning or burying alive. Finally there unrolled the story of the specific murder in question—that of a farmer named Nwakriko Abam. Abam, according to prosecution testimony, had been invited around for drinks by some of the chief’s men. Suddenly his hosts seized him and slowly strangled him with a chain. His body was then brought before Chief Igboji, dismembered, tied to the victim’s own bicycle, and flung into the river. Abam’s crime: he had had the temerity to campaign against the chief in the last local parliamentary election.

Outside politics, the man Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru have achieved immeasurable things. This act ensuring that the less privileged do not drop out of school is a monumental achievement. He is a rare gem. He have empowered a reasonable number of people for them to become boss of themselves. SPEAKER NWIFURU OFFSETS SCHOOL FEES OF OVER 70 UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

- Says the fees are for the indigent ones.
- Beneficiaries promise to excel greatly.
- “Stay focused and remember yourselves” - Hon. Victor Chukwu

Since the year 2015 till date, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru took a Divine role to help in the formation of a brilliant society of reputable youths in Ebonyi State and by extension, Nigeria. Through his consistent scholarship scheme, Speaker Nwifuru has continued to pay school fees for various students from Ebonyi State, across different universities in the country. In doing this, he not only gives soft landing to students from less privileged homes, but also provides a comfortable platform for creating a brighter future for our society.

As an excellent leader, he employs his dexterity, intelligence, goodwill and leadership skills to create events that shape not only the present but a good part of the future as well. In such dealings, Rt. Hon. Nwifuru is always driven by his personal experiences of the past and an eye for a greater future; interestingly not for himself, but for the generations after him. Again, he displays such unique tenets of a true leader, in foreseeing what others do not see, predicting the challenges ahead and prepares his people to face them head-on.

In attempting to secure that future for our youths in this difficult time, the Honourable Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, today, handed school fees of over 70 Ebonyi students from various Local Government Areas of the State to them, for the 2020/2021 academic year, through a charity and not-for-profit organisation - Onwa Oferekpe Foundation.

It is one of his modest ways of planning a brighter tomorrow for Ebonyi students, while God does the rest. In giving out these funds, Mr Speaker noted that they’re meant for the indigent students.

“This is meant for the less privilege, indigent ones and those that God wants us to help, exactly what the foundation did. I didn't screen them myself, the committee led by my Personal Assistant - Nwodom Okechukwu, the others and the foundation Chairman did, and so I do not know some of them, neither do I know where they come from.

“Let me use this opportunity to thank the board members of the foundation. What is interesting is that each and everyone of them gets their fees uniquely, some N120,000.00, some N130,000.00, N124,000.00, N100,000.00 and about two of them in College of Education who got N50,000.00 each. I am very much happy doing this each time because I am propelled by what I passed through during my days in school, and I know students encounter lots of temptations to pay their fees, especially the ‘not-well-to-do’ ones. They enter the University praying for God’s assistance, and I believe God has heard their plea.” - Speaker Nwifuru said.

Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru continued, in noting, that his scholarship scheme isn't meant for students from his constituency (Izzi West) alone, but across various Local Government Areas in the State, as witnessed today. As such, he called on other stakeholders to remember that it is their responsibility to take care of the people who voted for them.

“One thing that is certain is that all of us (stakeholders) should know that we have a responsibility of taking care of our people. They elected us not because it is our right but we’re privileged to be here, and not because we’re more intelligent than others, but because of the Grace of the Almighty and the benevolence of God that we’re in these positions. So I implore other stakeholders to emulate this, so we can help lessen the number of school dropouts to reduce the nuisance in our society and secure our homes and future.”

Speaking in joyful appreciation, on behalf of other beneficiaries, a 500 level student of Medicine and Surgery of Ebonyi State University - Oriji Jerome, thanked Mr. Speaker and urged other beneficiaries to go and share the good news to the world.

“Mr Speaker, Since 2014 that I gained admission into the University, you’ve been paying for my school fees. I'm happy and all of us are happy. We thank you so much. We are asking you to keep keeping on, promising you that today we’re beneficiaries and tomorrow, we’ll be benefactors. Onwa Oferekpe foundation will never fall, and we’ll support it to be better. We stand with you, youths and all students, to go and proclaim the good news, we thank you so much Sir.”

Nwogbaga Lucy Nnenna (Political Science, 100 level, EBSU) equally appreciated Speaker Nwifuru and pledged to make him proud.

“We want to appreciate you, for the scholarship, we'll make you very proud and emerge with flying colours, first-class all round. Where ever you step in your feet, we’ll be with you.”
In wrapping up the appreciation, the Leader of Ebonyi State House of Assembly - Hon. Victor Uzoma Chukwu, praised the Divine Grace at work through Mr. Speaker and urged the beneficiaries to remain focused and always remember themselves.

“Mr. Speaker has this as a natural gift. Having obeyed what God has called him for, I can only remind our brothers and sisters who are the beneficiaries of this great benevolence to please remember themselves, in terms of the great quality time they spend and to avoid social vices in school.

The Leader continued, “…having gotten these benefits, I urge us to remember ourselves. Today you’re being assisted to go to school, be it known to you that in Ebonyi State, every clan has a student who does not have money to go to back school. Mr Speaker’s large heart has made this possible for you, please endeavour to help yourselves.”

The vision of Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru is to develop all and sundry, as much as his hands can carry. His visions are excellent in form, essence and have some brilliant plans for implementation. Today’s activity was just a tip of the iceberg and rest assured that more will come, through Onwa Oferekpe Foundation, with Hon. Kenneth Nwovu sitting impressively as Chairman.

quote author=IkwerrePikin post=94398104]That’s good!

My Yoruba brothers, do not cause division in the South because of some selfish politicians. South West have produced President 8yrs, V.P 8yrs.

We Niger deltans had only 4yrs (Jonathan) and we are not fools, we must complete our tenure before power moves to the South West.

They say Igbos have not built bridges across Nigeria, well that is for the igbos to answer.

Niger deltans will build good political structure with the North ahead of 2023 to complete our tenure we don’t care about the party, our people are in the major political parties.

We believe our Yoruba neighbors will support us to complete our tenure for fairness and unity.

Nigeria can not survive Boko haram and shutting down of crude oil production in the Niger delta which will result to scarcity of petro and hardship (increase in price of good and transportation)
.

God bless Nigeria
[/quote]The problem most people have is not knowing their root.

You useless poster, I am reminding you that Ikwerre which you claim to be her Pikin going by your name is Igbo and nothing but Igbo.
If you think you are insulting Igbo which you are not part of, you are directly insulting your father, siblings, yourself, family, village and entire community.
