Politics › Saraki, Other Senators Avoid Main NASS Gate As #occupynass Protests Grow In Numb by emamos(op): 5:22pm On Apr 27, 2016
SaharaReporters has learned that the Senate President Bukola Saraki, for fear of being mobbed by angry protesters outside the main gate of the National Assembly, abandoned his plans to enter through it. Other senators, it was also learned, removed their official or customized license plates before passing by the protesters.

Saraki, Other Senators Avoid Main NASS Gate As #OccupyNASS Protests Grow In Number
#OccupyNASS protesters began their protest on Monday shutting down the NASS complex and bringing virtually all legislative activities to a halt. The placard carrying protesters refused to allow anybody to gain entry into the complex; the senators and representatives who tried to pass by the demonstrates were stalled by the melee.
These developments forced Mr. Saraki and his loyalists to enter through the Villa Gate as an alternative route.

The hundreds of youths joining the protest have vowed not back down on their agitation or demands.
SaharaReporters gathered that some senators, particularly those who accompanied Mr. Saraki to the Code of Conduct of Tribunal (CCT), where he is facing corruption charges, removed their number plates to avoid being singled out by the demonstrators.
As the rally entered its second day today the protesters continued with their agitation and public demands.

Canopies were mounted to provide shade for the protesters and also brought life to the show by inviting a DJ to maintain enthusiasm of the crowd. Some of the Muslim protesters were also seen observing their prayers near the protest site.
Since the Senate allocated SUVs it purchased for select members, at the rate of N35mllion each, some of the beneficiaries have not dared to bring the jeep out for use, some protesters noted.

Crime › Federal Government Orders Forces To Crush Security Threats by emamos(op): 4:17pm On Apr 26, 2016
Irked by the growing wave of communal conflicts and other clashes in some parts of the country, the Federal Government has ordered security agencies in the country to crush and deter crises that have the potential to breach the peace and national stability.
Muhammadu Buhari

The Minister of Defence, Mansur Muhammad Dan-Ali, gave the order on Tuesday in Abuja at a seminar on "Media Management in Crisis Situation" organized by the Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC) for Information Officers of the military, security and response agencies.
"Our security and response agencies are constantly engaged in the essential tasks required for meeting the internal security objectives of ensuring safety and security of Nigeria's territorial integrity, its population, and all the critical infrastructures,” he said in his opening address, pledging, “Our government will not relent in this primary objective.”
He affirmed that the priority of government is to ensure the security of lives and property of the citizenry, adding that all socio-economic activities in the country must continue to thrive without any hindrance from criminal elements and terrorists.
Mr. Dan-Ali stated that the government would continue to acknowledge the sustained efforts of the various military, security and response agencies that in spite of all odds are constantly and significantly mitigating the challenges and consequences of violent eruptions and crisis across the country.
He pledged continued support for all the agencies, particularly those battling an insurgency in the North East so that they can effectively deliver on their mandate.
On crisis management, the minister tasked information officers of the various agencies to be patriotic and professional in the discharge of their duties.
"You must bear in mind that our dear country is currently confronted with several challenges which demand every sense of professionalism in the way and manner information is to be managed.
"You have the responsibility to manage sensitive information at your disposal with all sense of patriotism and to relate with media and the general public with the utmost sense of professionalism taking into cognizance the importance of our cherished national interest and national security," he charged.
The minister, who commended CCC for its contribution to national security, also charged other organizations to emulate such laudable initiative.
Welcoming guests and participants, the Executive Secretary of CCC, Air Commodore Yusuf Anas (Rtd) said the seminar was designed to assist information officers to effectively and efficiently engage the media to communicate responsibly with the public

Politics › Buhari’s Face Has Saved Pipelines From Vandals-kachikwu by emamos(op): 9:01am On Apr 26, 2016
Crude oil is now being pumped directly from Escravos to Warri Refinery and
also from Bonny to Port Harcourt Refinery through pipeline buried on the
sea bed.
This is coming as Minister of State for Petroleum and Group Managing
Director, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, said
incessant pipelines vandalism and fuel scarcity in Nigeria would soon end.
The Minister gave the assurance while commissioning the first privately
built multi-billion naira crude oil pipeline that now convey crude oil
directly to Warri Refinery from Escravos, saying that with the underwater
crude pipeline, it would be difficult for vandals to access it as such the
crude flow to the refineries would not be disrupted.
Dr. Kachikwu hinted that one of the problems why the refineries have not
been producing at their installed capacities was due to incessant
vandalism of pipelines and the use of marine vessels.
“With this initiative, Warri refinery will have regular regular supply of
crude. Same thing for Port Harcourt refinery which will also be supplied
through Bonny. With this, the three refineries would have refined
petroleum products, thus eliminating scarcity of the products.”
Chairman of Ocean Marine Solution, Captain Nosa Okunbo, lauded President
Muhammadu Buhari for introducing a sweeping reform in the oil and gas
sector, noting that ‘’this is first time in the last 10 years that crude
will be delivered to the Warri refinery through pipe-lines.’’
The industrialist said his company was also building a similar project
Bonny to ferry crude to and Port Harcourt refinery, expressing hope that
perennial fuel scarcity would end if the three refineries were working at
installed capacities.
“Today, we are very glad that for the first time over ten years we are
able to deliver the crude line between Escravos and Warri and crude is now
flowing through the pipeline which was impossibility over the years. We
thank God, you saw the minister, there finery people were glad , NNPC were
rejoicing and we as a company is also rejoicing for what God has used us
to do. For me, I am so glad because sometimes there are certain things you
achieve that are more than money. We have created serious value for this
county using our own resources.
“As I speak to you there is no contract in place because in our industry
there is something you call proof of concept. In our company we believe
that everything is possible when you have the will, there must be a way
and that is what we have achieved today. We thank God for the new
leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari. His face has saved the pipeline
because he is a no nonsense man unlike before.
“The community is able to cooperate with us. We used carrot and stick
approach and our security surveillance and also the contract of actually
doing the job and replacing the contract. It was very tedious and sometime
we almost got killed and threat to our lives which inform why you see all
these security around us. We have put our lives on the line to deliver
Escravos, we have also delivered Bonny to Port Harcourt and today there is
crude in Port Harcourt that is flowing to the refinery
and the same thing with Warri refinery.

Former Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan, who has been in the United States since last week, canceled a scheduled keynote speech at the Africa Peace Awards Dinner organized bythe Center for African Peace and Conflict Resolution at the California State University, Sacramento in order to avoid embarrassment, SaharaReporters has learned.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan
Mr. Jonathan’s former Special Assistant on New Media, Reno Omokri, spoke on his behalf, explaining that the former President had taken ill.
SaharaReporters has however learned that Mr. Jonathan, who has been travelling across the US to associate himself with international NGOs, feigned his illness to avoid embarrassment by protests planned against him. It will be recalled that Mr. Jonathan, while in Newark, New Jersey, met with a human trafficking NGO and made remarks at the Mayor’s office.
One local California newspaper, The Sacramento Bee, confirmed the details of the speech, noting, “Mr. Jonathan’s appearance had stirred controversy because of Nigeria’s anti-gay law, which punishes not only gay marriage but public support of it.”
Mr. Jonathan has been under pressure since the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested his cousin, Robert Azibaola, in connection with allegations over an oilpipeline job estimated at over $40 million.
The commission has been following leads between those corruption allegations and his cousin, Mr. Jonathan.

Politics › Power Crisis: Nigeria Lacks Gas To Generate 7,000MW —osinbajo by emamos(op): 5:49pm On Apr 25, 2016
The Vice President of Nigeria, Mr. Yemi Osinbajo, on Monday, lamented that the country does not have sufficient gas to fire the country’s power plants to generate up to 7,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity.
Osinbajo
This was even as the President of the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics, NAEE, Mr. Wumi Iledare, stated that in line with the current realities in the global petroleum industry and the foreign exchange rate, the price of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, also known as petrol, in the country should be about N120 per litre.
Osinbajo, who was speaking at the NAEE/International Association for Energy Economics, Annual International Conference 2016 in Abuja, expressed his disappointment in the fact that despite Nigeria’s enormous natural gas reserves of over 185 trillion cubic feet, the country is still faced with huge energy supply problems.
Osinbajo, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant (Power and Privatisation), Chiedu Ugbo, said: “In fact, it is an irony, that we do not have sufficient gas to fire our power plants up to 7,000MW, yet in energy industry circles, Nigeria is described as more of a gas territory than an oil territory.”
He pointed out that presently, the country has over 12,500MW of installed electricity generating capacity, consisting of gas thermal and hydropower plants, stating of that capacity, about 7,000MW is available to be generated if the required fuel is available.
He, however, disclosed that in spite of the available capacity, power plants in the country, over the last couple of weeks, distributed less than 4,000MW of electricity to consumers across the country.
Osinbajo blamed the development on inadequate investment on gas facilities, gas flaring, inadequate gas infrastructure and vandalism among others.
He said, “We have limited gas molecules to supply to the power plants. This is a result of many years of under-investment in gas gathering and processing for domestic consumption and also many years of gas flaring. Nigeria alone flares about half of the 40 billion cubic meters of associated gas estimated to be flared in Africa annually.
To address the situation, Osinbajo disclosed that the Federal Government is aware that there is no alternative to electric energy for energizing and powering Nigeria’s economic growth and development; hence it is determined to resolve the challenges to achieving sustainable energy supply in the country.
“We are working tirelessly towards resolving the gas-to-power challenge, ensuring that the needed investment will be made in gas gathering and processing for domestic consumption especially for power plants and at the same time working to ensure sustainability of supply of existing gas volumes,” he noted.

Politics › Don’t Expect Change Till 2016 Budget Is Signed –onu by emamos(op): 9:00am On Apr 25, 2016
The much expected change in the country will not manifest until the 2016 budget is signed and implemented by the federal government, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, has said.
He spoke yesterday at the launch of an updated edition of a book; “Each Man, His Time-The Biography of An Era,” written by a former Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh (Yerima of Auchi Kingdom) and the celebration of his 47th marriage anniversary in Mararaba, Nasarawa State.
Onu said the federal government was still running the country with the 2015 budget of the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government.
He said President Muhammadu Buhari was working assiduously to ‎provide job opportunities and secure lives and property of Nigerians and should be supported to provide good governance.
He added that the president wanted to institutionalise free and fair elections so that anyone fit for any elective position could contest and win without rigging.
“Change won’t come until the 2016 budget is signed. What we are using now is the 2015 budget which was not done by us. Our president has restored our image to the position of repute, so let’s support him,” he said.
Onu added that the APC-led government was committed to fulfilling all its campaign promises to Nigerians.
Prince Tony Momoh described the book as the story of a kingdom and its explosive growth during the era of Momoh the first from 1919 to 1944.
He advised Nigerians not to expect immediate change, stressing that change would begin to come in two years.
“Change must come, but be patient. Within two years, ‎you will be celebrating change,” he said.
Momoh said he had no conflict with his wife since they got married 47 years ago, and flayed the former PDP-led government for diverting funds meant for the purchase of arms to fight Boko Haram militants.

Politics › Saraki Moves To Halt His Trial Today Again As Court Of Appeal Issues Hearing Not by emamos(op): 7:56am On Apr 25, 2016
In a controversial and surprising move, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal has issued a hearing notice regarding a jurisdiction case filed by lawyers representing embattled Senate President, Bukola Saraki. A judicial source told SaharaReporters that the Court of Appeal issued the notice late Friday, a move the source described as not only surprising but suspicious.
Mr. Saraki’s lawyers want the Court of Appeal to halt his trial now going on at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) before Justice Danladi Umar. The senator’s huge legal team, comprising 90 lawyers, has argued that is contending that the tribunal lacks the jurisdiction to try their client for false declaration of assets and corrupt enrichment.
Speaking to SaharaReporters this evening, a senior lawyer based in Abuja stated that it was untoward for the Court of Appeal to issue the notice of hearing on the matter of the CCT’s jurisdiction. “The prayers of Mr. Saraki's legal team are not different from the ones considered and resolved by the Supreme Court this year. As the country’s apex court, the ruling of the Supreme Court on the matter of jurisdiction is and should be the last word. And the court cleared the way for the tribunal to commence trial of Dr. Saraki,” he said.
If the Court of Appeal grants a stay of the trial tomorrow, Mr. Saraki's trial would not resume on Wednesday as planned. Our judicial source alleged that the senator’s plot could be to keep his case in the Court of Appeal for several months. “If he succeeds, then the Federal Government will not be able to continue his trial or to get to the Supreme Court,” he stated.
In a related development, a source at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said the agency was trailing the movement of more than $900,000 they believe was being laundered by the Kwara State government using a woman named Halima Suleiman. The EFCC source said Ms. Suleiman is an indigene of Jigawa State, but her mother hails from Edo State.
The anti-corruption source disclosed that the EFCC was interested in discovering both how the funds were sourced and where they would end up.
The Court of Appeal’s reopening of Mr. Saraki’s contention that the CCT does not have the jurisdiction to try him has raised suspicions that the senator’s associates may have reached some judges willing to help him scuttle his trial.

Crime › Teenager Kills Landlady, Daughter, Grandchildren, Reports To Police by emamos(op): 7:37am On Apr 25, 2016
An 18-year-old man, identified simply as Sunday, is currently in the police custody in Abuja after he allegedly killed his parents’ landlady, identified only as Mama Moses.

The suspect was also accused of killing the landlady’s daughter and her three grandchildren.

It was gathered that the suspect, who lived with his parents in the landlady’s residence at Tudun-Fulani, in the Bwari area of the Federal Capital Territory, reported himself to the police after committing the crime.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Sunday locked the deceased in their apartment after they had slept in the night, sprayed the house with petrol and set it ablaze afterwards.

It was said that Sunday watched as the fire raged on and when he was sure that the victims were trapped, he headed for the Bwari Police Division.

The inferno reportedly lasted for hours before residents were able to put it out.

Charred remains of the five victims were eventually removed from the razed apartment and deposited in a morgue by the police.

Our correspondent gathered that Sunday’s mother had fled from the community.

Prior to the incident, which happened on Thursday, April 14, our correspondent learnt that there was a disagreement between the suspect and the landlady’s family members. He reportedly threatened to deal with them.

It was learnt that there was a relationship between the landlady’s daughter and Sunday, which broke recently.

The boy was said to have kept the family at arm’s length following the collapse of the relationship.

A police source told our correspondent that he and his colleagues were shocked when the suspect came to the station to report the matter.

He said, “Last Thursday, after the family members had gone to bed, the suspect locked their apartment’s door from outside, drenched the building with fuel and set the house ablaze. By the time the police got there, they had been burnt beyond recognition.

“I was told that he and the landlady’s daughter were dating each other until recently when their relationship turned sour. He had been transferred to another division for further investigation.”

A social media user posted on Nairaland.com that the incident happened not far from his residence in Sabon-Gari.

He said, “The incident started at about 11pm. There was confusion in the community. It was difficult for people to rescue the family because the fire was much.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in Abuja, ASP Anjuguri Manzah, confirmed the incident to PUNCH Metro, saying that the commissioner of police, FCT, had directed that the suspect be transferred to the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.

The PPRO added that Sunday would be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.

He said, “Five persons were burnt to death in the incident; it was unfortunate. The CP has directed that the suspect should be transferred to the homicide section of CIID. Investigation is still ongoing and the suspect will be charged to court after the investigation. The corpses have been deposited in a mortuary.”

Politics › Port Harcourt, Warri Refineries Producing 7m Litres/per Day Of PMS – Kachikwu by emamos(op): 7:57pm On Apr 24, 2016
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, weekend, stated that the newly re-opened Port Harcourt and Warri refineries are now producing seven million litres of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, also known as petrol per day.
According to an NNPC statement in Abuja, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director of the NNPC, made this disclosure while re-commissioning the Bonny-Port Harcourt Refinery crude pipeline that had been rehabilitated after being out of use for a number of years due to incessant pipeline vandalism.
According to Kachikwu, Port Harcourt Refining Company now produces five million litres of Premium Motor Spirit while the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company also produces two million liters of petrol per day.
He also noted that the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company is scheduled to start production any moment from now adding that the coming on stream of the three refineries will go a long way to ensure sufficient supply and distribution of petrol across the country.
He stated that the NNPC under his watch has been able to recover the two critical crude supply pipelines which were Escravos to Warri and Bonny to Port Harcourt crude supply pipelines stressing that they are critical to the downstream sector of the industry.
“Port Harcourt is back in production, Warri is back in production, Kaduna as at today is receiving crude and will soon be back in production. Lagos is easing off now from fuel scarcity and Abuja is doing the same thing and once Kaduna begins production, the North will see a lot of improvement,” he explained.
He added that for the first time in many years, the three refineries are going to be working and it will help in a great deal with the issue of fuel supply and distribution across the country.
He maintained that the commercial governance model system was being introduced into the refineries so as to keep them in business and to enable them compete favourably in the hydrocarbon value chain.
“ What we have done is to find a very creative way of bringing investors who will come in, work with our team here who have the skills, reactivate and upgrade facilities in these refineries’’, the minister disclosed.
According to him, the investors will also help us to provide technical support and they will be paid through the flow out of refined products over a period of time which is why we have also changed the refining model such that refineries pay for their crude so it goes into federation account.
He explained that whatever they produce is theirs and they sell to one huge customer which will be both Nigerian Petroleum Marketing Company (NPMC) and the marketers themselves and that enables them to keep the refineries going after the upgrade so that the problem we have in the past of not repairing the refineries will not reoccur.

Crime › I Bought Five Babies For N5m From Child Dealer In Port Harcourt – 60-year-old Wo by emamos(op): 4:50pm On Apr 22, 2016
The police in Oyo State have arrested a 60-year-old woman, Asabi Adebayo, for allegedly buying five babies at N5million from a ‘child dealer’ in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
The suspect, who said she hailed from Lagos State, is a U.S returnee and revealed how she planned to fly the babies abroad for sale, but first brought them to an orphanage in Ibadan, Oyo state capital, to obtain a certified police report for them before she was exposed, Tribune reports.
Parading the suspected child trafficker, the babies alongside other suspects on Thursday at the Eleyele Police Headquarters, the Commissioner of Police, CP, Leye Oyebade, said the woman would have escaped if not for the patriotic effort of the officials of the orphanage who according to him reported the matter at the Iyaganku Police Station.
Oyebade said the police officers who accompanied the suspect to Port-Harcourt where she claimed to have bought the babies have not been able to apprehend the sellers, however, the babies have been taken to the Ministry of Women Affairs, Child Welfare.
“The suspect is assisting the police in their investigation,” the CP said, adding that the ages of the babies, (two boys and three girls) range from two years, eight months, seven months, six months and four months.
Confirming the activities of the woman, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in Iyaganku area of the state, Mr. Ojopagogo, told journalists that, “A woman, who operates an orphanage came to our station last Thursday and reported to us that a 60-year-old woman came to them that she had five children and that she needed police report for the children to be flown abroad.
“Our detectives, led by a Superintendent of Police, SP, from the Juvenile Welfare Section, went to arrest the suspect.

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has directed that two High Court judges be removed from the bench for stated misbehavior.
Alex Acheampong, the Judicial Secretary, said on Friday in Accra that the president was acting on recommendations of the Judicial Council which investigated allegations of bribery and dereliction of duty against the judges.
He said Justice Kofi Essel-Mensah and Justice Francis Opoku were sacked for allegedly receiving bribes to influence justice in cases brought before them as exposed in the undercover video produced by investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw- Anas.
He said their removal took effect from April 19, 2016.
