You need to account for inflation.... that is what atlwireless is referring to. $1 30 years ago is not the same as $1 today. So his point is that the value received back then was more in terms of purchasing power compared to the price of oil today.
Watch them act like all you did was yawn pretend you said nothing and then carry on with their jaundiced view/claims.

How has this impacted the lives of common citizens on the street? Don't be deceived bro..
My friend,to be honest,a GDP of $522 billion for a population of 140 million is grossly inadequate. If we do not proceed to double or even triple, our GDP in a couple of years , faster than our population grows, it will always be hard to impact the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

Really? Its not surprising considering what you posted after him grin. I was going to ignore but since you called:

Anyone with elementary knowledge of what GDP is in the first place, would know it is concerned with production and not consumption.

Obiagelli already enlightened you guys that GDP and oil prices are both in USD so i wonder what you are on about.

You and the person you were trying to defend were victims of ignorant arrogance, which usually ends in this way.
The next fable you will spin is that Nigeria was more productive in 1983.I'd like you to provide evidence of that.PLEASE SHOW THAT NIGERIA WAS MORE PRODUCTIVE IN 1983 THAN TODAY OTHERWISE YOUR CLAIMS ABOUT GDP IS BUNKUM.

Using the first site you would see that a million dollars ($ 1,000000) adjusted for inflationary pressure is worth about two point four million dollars ($ 2,389869.48) today a cumulative rate of inflation at
one hundred and thirty nine percent (139%).

Good now just a few more tiny overlooked details and we get the full comparative picture.
Post the year on year comparative figures for inflation ,exchange rate, approximate population(at the time) and structure of federating units(number of states or regions whichever applied at the time) for each of those years listed.
You can't just come here and drop some lousy figures and declare that you point is made.
If you really want to convince us,you have to show that COMPARATIVELY , raking cognizance of the following FACTS :
I,Taking inflationary trends into account the value of a dollar(and the Naira by the way) in 1983 is worth far more than todays dollar/naira(proof ?:ask Google)
II,Exchange Rate,do i really need to explain this
III,Population:Obviously Nigeria was far less populated in 1983-20013 than it is now.Less population obviously means more resources such as they were at any given year to take care of each individual's needs.
IV,Federating Structure:Nigeria has far more states and governance structures/units today than it did between 1983-1999.To be honest we have far more parastatals/ministries than we had in 1999/2000 which means resource going to each one is more tightly contested. This means each federating unit has less that what that unit might consider as optimum for it to function.
I've had it with folks pulling figures out of that place( where the sun never shines unless they are at the beach) and claiming we all submit to their superior arguments.

Oga stop posting things you don't have details of. Those weapons were meant for Kurdish fighters in Kobane but some of them incidentally fell into the hands of ISIS. It wasn't a deliberate act. Stop making it look as though the US is deliberately arming the terrorist group.

The other day, a picture of Boko Haram armoury was posted with some bearing the inscription "office of the chief of army staff". Does it necessarily mean the weapons were "supplied them"by the chief of army staffhuh
I am super super shocked at the rational argument you just put forth......Now if you could just apply the same brain wave when analyzing issues relating to Nigeria.

What has happened in Kano State for
instance has never happened and what made it
possible was that the people had a new governor in
2011. It was that simple

Says the Man who was governor between 1999 and 2003, and was in charge of the state when an average of three sectarian killings taking the lives of thousands of southerners and Christians happened each year.
This people really think we who experienced their deliberate inaction will forget the gruesome death of loved ones and associates.
Guys I tell you wait for the candidates to emerge and then Nigerians who have suffered loss as a result of the inaction or connivance of these characters (Buhari,Kwankwaso) will remind them of the names of their loved ones who have been lost to the blood letting culture of the core north even before bokoharam became a house hold name.
Not forgetting that bokoharam has compounded the situation.

In the most recent instance, he even crisised the Government's legitimate actions against the killers (BokoHaram) before belatedly condemning BokoHaram.

. Character - Integrity( Lets say he has this)

Nice read I must say and let me commend the sense of maturity here.
@Topic: really I have thought of this severally and now know why there have been serious debates on this issues in the ND region lately, involving volunteers from the Learned, skilled and Professionals.
I don't think the new MEND will wage a war against the NA, it'll be against Oil and Gas Production, the IOCs know this and that's why they have been selling off their assets on lands, creeks and canals to relocate to deep waters. The strategy would be so easy; it takes several months and several millions of dollars to set up one well head, and just less that 5 seconds and a few naira's to blow with: so really I wouldn't want to go that line with MEND - they'll win the war against the economy if they want to in a very short time. And except the millitary would be operating the oil assets, I see no right-thinking Oil coy that will send her staffs to a "war zone" where ur facilities are threatened.
I laugh at most of the comments here cos most guys are based abroad.
It's general knowledge that the BH menace is to discredit GEJ's administration, so don't expect the ND not to do theirs if the table of leadership turns and this time will be felt by many.
Concequences of Change I must say, a huge price. But what are we changing from and into by the way? It's not as if the opposition is any better (talking about the devil you know).
Why am I even saying all these, @OP, these can't be prophesies, they are emerging realities on ground should GEJ not return for a second term.
Not that all NDs like him, but he is prefered there to any 'parasite'.
The 'owners' and 'holders' of Nigeria know this and that's why GEJ must return in 2015.
You can bookmark this page.
I once mentioned this but some people here think this will be a bokoharam type conflict. This will be war against the Nigerian economy and productivity. All gas pipelines to every PowerStation, all, major and strategic transmission lines, major control nodes of crude and petroleum products pipeline pump stations mind you not the pipelines themselves major harassment of ships in approaching Nigerian ports and the likes.
Major harassment of oil workers indigenous and mostly foreign.
If you don't see the effects of this on the largest economy in Africa, then I'm not going to tell.

the igbos ability to vote enbloc as shown in the last election is a political advantage yet to be realised by the so called sophisticated voters in the west( although its simple to understand,South Easterners like Northerness are wont to take a firm stand at some point on anything be it religion or politics while the same cannot be said of our brothers in the west who would rather always stay on the fence be it religion , war or politics/voting).
I'm not Ibo but having grown up in kano and spent alot of time around the, core, north. In a real census, igbos all over Nigeria could easily constitute the largest ethnic group in Nigeria.I suspect that even the most bigoted northerners and south westerners know this but will only admit this to them selves in the privacy of their bedrooms at midnight(this probably explains the silence of the northern elites in the face of seven decades of targeted killings of ibos and anyone that looks Ibo in the core north. They have always known this because the British must have known this a long time ago). This is both a problem for the ibos and an,advantage if they can just get their act together as their unique spread gives them, the ability influence the course of leadership in this country. The quote below makes the point in drving at although I won't delve too much into this.
