Mohammed Abacha, son of former military dictator Sani Abacha, yesterday's announcement that he was rejoining the Bamanga Tukur faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has confirmed report of a deal between President Goodluck Jonathan and family/ associates of the late military ruler.



Mr. Abacha's declaration of support for President Goodluck Jonathan's 2015 presidential bid runs counter to the agitation by many Northern members of the PDP for political power to shift to the region in 2015.

A central figure in the deal is Abacha's erstwhile Chief Security Officer, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha. Mr. Al-Mustapha's murder conviction was recently set aside by a controversial appellate court decision.

Earlier, a high court had found Mr. Mustapha guilty of ordering the assassination of Mrs. Abiola, wife of Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election that was annulled by then Head of State Ibrahim Babangida. SaharaReporters had disclosed that the former CSO's conviction was overturned as part of a deal with the Abacha family. Since his release, Mr. Al-Mustapha has been mobilizing underground support for President Jonathan's 2015 re-election bid.

A source revealed that the Abacha family and Mr. Al-Mustapha have been mobilizing their resources, associates and connections to woo supporters to line up behind Mr. Jonathan. The source declared that yesterday's decision by Mohammed Abacha to rejoin the PDP was the culmination of the deal.

"Mohammed's action today is an indication that the Abacha family, including his widow, has confirmed its commitment to Mr. Jonathan," said a close associate of Mohammed Abacha.

He defended Mr. Abacha's decision, stating, "President Goodluck [Jonathan] has shown more trust to them than all these key northerners [who are] pretending. See how Abdulsalami Abubakar treated them, up to Obasanjo.

Where was Babangida and all these northerners?" He continued: "See what happened to Hamza Al-Mustapha. Who implicated him and all the associates of Abacha? It was Jonathan that influenced Al-Mustapha's freedom; it was the same men that honored Abacha as the Head of State that created Bayelsa State. It was the same Jonathan that freed the Abacha's from many traps, which I cannot mention for now." He stated that the Abachas' demonstration of their commitment to Jonathan "has just started."

Since his release from jail, Mr. Al-Mustapha has been meeting and associating with staunch supporters of President Jonathan, including Asari Dokubo. Mr. Mohammed Abacha's speech yesterday made clear his involvement in Mr. Jonathan's 2015 bid.

"When I left the PDP in 2010, my view was that it had no internal democracy, but in CPC, the experience was ...very bitter. There was a major issue that challenged all of us while in the PDP but we met it in a bigger and more huge manner in the party we went to. The APC today is not an option."

Mr. Abacha added: "With the new NWC and the chairman coupled with the efforts they have been making to ensure that the party is taken to the next level, that was what enticed us. We have consulted as far and as wide as we could and this resulted in us taking the decision to come back to the PDP instead of going somewhere else.

"PDP is widespread and covers every part of the country and it is the party that is in power; it is the party that has made the change that we are witnessing today in our country and which we hope we will continue to witness in the coming years by the Grace of God."[color=#006600][/color]

ASUU Strike: When will we matter? [Must Read] for All Nigerian Students





Civilization begins when the strong finally realize they have a duty to protect the weak, when the knowledgeable finally realize they have a duty to protect the ignorant; that duty is the foundation of civilization, the bedrock on which everything else rests.

For decades, we, the people, have abdicated our duties to a few strong men. "Rule us" wesay, "and do not steal too much. Do not be too corrupt, do not betray us too much, do not shame us beyond endurance. Protect the weak, the elderly, the helpless, the sick, the young; protect them from those who will prey on them. And protect us. 

If you grant us protection, you may steal a little, enough to be filthy rich as long as you do not rub our faces too much in it. We are giving you care of our numerous resources because we lack the
faith, the strength and the brain power to utilize and manage them properly.

Now there is a new party or should I call it a "coalition" with the sole aim to topple the present administration (of course at an election!) kind of a civilian coup d'état. Not tobetter develop the country, NO! not to find a way to provide better jobs, NO! not seeking to manage our resources profitably, NO!; just to ensure that the ruling party does not produce the winner in the next elections. 

Someone said they are an association of past criminals seeking to stop people from deceiving people. Now the two "major" parties are trading words with the new party committing it's first blunder. Of course, the opposition seized the opportunity optimally saying they do not see a presidential candidate among themselves.

I want to say here "categorically" that our duty can no longer be ignored. Our destiny has been delivered into our hands by the Hands that created the universe. We must acknowledge before God and before each other that this nation is ours to write, ours to invent, ours to live and ours to answer for;on earth here and before the throne of heaven on Judgement day.


The future of our families is on our heads, the fate of this people is our responsibility and our destiny. The "e no concern me" attitude of today's youths is disheartening. How many know what is happening in the government, how many care to know? Our leaders do whatever they want without recourse to the people being led.

Nigerian students have to exercise patience biding the time "they" decide to answer "us". Sorry?Who are the  "us"? Did our lecturers even ask what the students feel about their requests? They say they are fighting to improve the standard of higher education in Nigeria. For the love of a good education! How many student
leaders were incorporated in the agreement with the federal government in 2009? But we are inconsequential; as we have always been. The strike in 2009 for 3 months, who were primarily, secondarily andtertiarily affected? Students! The present strike, which group of people is singularly affected? Students! And you sit there facebooking all day, Making jokes about the strike while our lecturers are collecting their salaries, senators are collecting their allowances.

Even the Minister of state on Education is more interested in the Rivers crises than in strike situation. We all campaigned the nation over about the "girl child" situation. Hash tags and DP's proclaimed our outrage at what about 90% of us did not fully understand. Why can't we do the same about the strike? Or we'll just sit here hoping, maybe even praying that the strike will be called off. The "agreement" theyare even talking about, the contents are unknown to "US". But then again, do we matter?

Forced conversion to Islam: My daughter not the only one at Etsu Nupe’s palace – Uzoechina

ABUJA—APART from his daughter, Miss Charity (Aisha) Uzoechina, Pastor Raymond Uzoechina has called on security agencies to investigate activities at the palace of the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, to ensure that many people there had not been forced to convert to Islam and held against their will.

“Apart from my daughter, there are so many people at the palace. There is need for the police to investigate and ensure that the people are not suffering the fate of my daughter,” Pastor Uzoechina told Vanguard on phone, yesterday.

He spoke ahead of the August 1, 2013 expected ruling of the Bida Sharia Court 1 on whether or not 24-year-old Charity (Aisha) Uzoechina should be released to her parents.

Charity left their Abuja home to further her studies at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State recently.  According to reports, she has not returned home since March. She has allegedly been at the palace of the Etsu Nupe on her own volition after converting to Islam and changing her name to Aisha.

Pastor Uzoechina is claiming that his daughter was kidnapped and hypnotised and could never abandon the Christian faith for Islam. But the Etsu Nupe argued otherwise and produced legal documents where his daughter said she had converted to Islam and alleged that his father could kill her for the action hence the need to seek protection from the Palace and the Sharia Court, which the court granted.

Consequently, the Etsu Nupe refused to release the lady to Uzoechina, a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, citing the sharia court ruling.

Asked how far the matter had gone, the pastor said: “They (sharia court) have fixed Thursday, August 1 for ruling on our appeal that they don’t have jurisdiction. You can’t judge a Christian in a Muslim court. I am appealing to them to vacate the judgment because they don’t have jurisdiction.”

How can I kill my daughter?
On allegations that he could kill his daughter over conversion from Christianity to Islam, he said: That is not true. My daughter cannot make that allegation. Why should I kill her? We asked them to bring her to the court so that my lawyer can cross-examine her but they refused.

“If she has converted to Islam, must she practice at the Etsu Nupe’s palace?  Is Etsu Nupe the chief security officer now? They should not separate me from my daughter. She has stayed in the palace for six months. If they say I will harm her, let them release her to the Inspector General of Police, leader of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN or ask me to write an undertaking. Why is my daughter still under Etsu Nupe’s enclave? I am only talking about my daughter; there are so many people at the palace. There is need for the police to investigate and ensure that other people are not suffering the fate of my daughter. They did not allow my wife to see my daughter when she visited the palace.”

Genesis of the matter
Pastor Uzoechina said the matter, which is now causing a big row among the Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor-led CAN, the Bida Emirate and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, started on March 1 and 2 when he got a call from an aide of the emir, asking him to come to the palace.

At the palace in Bida, he said he met his daughter with two other women. “The man said these women brought my daughter to the palace that she has embraced Islam and she has also been withdrawn from school. Those women even claimed they have taken her through the rudiments of Islam and have started looking for a school for her. At this juncture, I demanded that I am going home with her. But the man declined, saying only the emir has the power to allow the girl go with me. They took me to the emir but the emir refused my plea, saying I should come back next week.”

On March 4, he said two people who claimed to be from the Bida Sharia Court emerged with his daughter with a folded paper and asked him to sign but he refused. He tried to take his daughter but was told that she was now under the custody of the Sharia Court.

The Sharia Court 1 said it arrived at the decision because the girl claimed her father could kill her following her change of faith. It also said that the defendant (Pastor Uzoechina) shunned an invitation to appear before it to defend himself, adding: “At this juncture, this honourable court hereby orders that the custody of the plaintiff be entrusted in the hand of Etsu Nupe for the time being and the Etsu Nupe should employ a qualified Islamic scholar who will be teaching her and showing her what the Islamic customs is all about and the plaintiff can even be watching and selecting a man of her choice whom she will want to marry as her partner.”

Appeal
Consequently, Uzoechina got his lawyer, Anthony Agbonlahor, to appeal the ruling. The lawyer also petitioned the Chief Judge of Niger State, complaining about the conduct of the judge of the Sharia Court 1, Justice Abdulkadir Idris, saying that the court had no right to take custody of the girl.

He said: “Contrary to the principle of natural justice vis- a-vis fair hearing, our client was not served either with the court summons/processes or hearing notice. The case was filed on March 4; the case was heard March 4 and judgment delivered on the same day. In fact, judgment was also executed on the same date. The question is: why the urgency?”

Responding to the allegations, the Bida Emirate reportedly accused Uzoechina of distorting facts and insisted that the Etsu Nupe should not be blamed for the girl’s voluntary decision.

It said in a statement that Miss Uzoechina approached the monarch for protection over her change of faith from Christianity to Islam on February 15.

“The royal father invited the father of the girl for talks, with the hope of reconciling them. On March 2, the father came to the palace and was taken before His Royal Highness. It was at His Royal Highness chamber that the father came face to face with his daughter. After discussions with the girl and her father, the Etsu Nupe asked the girl to go back home with her father to resolve the matter as a family.

“The girl refused to go home with her father fearing that the father may harm her going by the encounter at the Etsu Nupe’s palace. The girl left the palace and approached a court in Bida for protection, a request which the court granted the girl. The girl has since been in the custody of the court in Bida. Her reason was that her father insulted her and she was scared that he may harm her because of his utterances during their short meeting.”

From the support you have received from the state legislature, members of the National Assembly from your state and other groups, it is certain you are liked and very popular. But that is so long you remain the governor and control tangible financial resources.

Bear in mind that the forces massed against you are formidable..Your priority should be to leave lasting legacies for which generations unborn will remember you. That being the case, you should choose between your personal interest and that of the Rivers State people. They accuse you of harbouring a vice-presidential ambition. Though there is nothing wrong in that. Nonetheless, you should dump that if it makes some people uncomfortable.

Let me make it very clear: the crisis in Rivers State will not lead to the victory for either President Jonathan or Governor Amaechi or their teeming supporters; rather it will end up tearing the entire nation apart, because those involved in the fight are too powerful and connected to be ignored, and their tentacles stretch to as far as Damataru and Jigawa in the north, Lagos and Ogbomosho in the west, Abakaliki and Awka in the east, and Calabar and Yenagoa in the in the south.
