Absolutely nothing!! or those whose goods are spoilt at the border? No prenotice about the closure. |

Do you really know what you wrote? That Nigeria should exit ECOWAS? OK (1) if Nigeria exit that means our Nigerian goods that are of high demand in west Africa such as electric wire, water tanks, cement, iron rod, glass, electrical gargets, eggs, shoes etc will not enjoy the ETLS benefit so it will be declared as imports and high duty paid. (2) that means if a Nigerian wants to travel to Senegal or Benin he will apply for Visa (3) those Nigerians in these ECOWAS will be illegal migrants and if deported do you have a job for them? Instead of you to challenge the government to provide good roads and electricity so that we can be like the rest of west Africa. My dear Nigerian road is the worst among all the west Africa road even light too yet we claim African power |

Angelfrost: Both of them are distinct and not mutually inclusive... However, both can be done concurrently.
Enabling businesses to grow will not happen overnight. It is a long term process...
Let me reiterate this sir, Border closure is not merely to help the rice sector (imposing high import duties can make the price go up, and push consumers to local products, without need to close borders). Border closure is more encompassing and far-reaching: Influx of weapons to insurgents, smuggling of contrabands and evasion of taxes, etc.
At the end, it's all geared towards our collective national and economic safety. it's difficult to smuggle weapons at the border but easier at the port because port doesn't have scanning machine instead they do physical examination. Goods that passes the border are dutiable just like the port with the same fee depending on the content or country of original. You haven't met me nor know me but if you have to believe please make out time to visit these places. There are things I can't say online. Also yardua has increased the duty of rice in the past to 120% from 35% but didn't work. Do you know how many check points are there from the borders to the city? Compare that to the port? Please get your fact |

Angelfrost: Brother, with all due respect, you are taking a very shallow and dim view of this border closure issue.
The border situation is just an aspect of a holistic approach to sanitize immigration, trans-border trade, quell smuggling, and directly/indirectly improve profits of local manufacturers of the same products we have been bringing in from other nations...
Great change begins with small changes... I have done my research, you should do yours. Most farmers are smiling as at today, local industries are generating more dividends with high likelihood of expanding soon, with consequent increase in employment... The people largely frazzled by all these are those who largely indulge in trans-border trade (Mostly smugglers).
All these are economic steps, with more soon to follow... The country is now generating more from taxes... Corruption in the downstream sector, including oil bunkering is largely reduced... Once the economic team takes the bold step to fully deregulate the downstream sector, and remove subsidy, huge tons of revenue will be generated...
Reforms in the power, labour, infrastructure sectors will be implemented too... I know I sound dreamy, but what else is there sir??! Get depressed and disillusioned??! Nah... The way forward is to look within and make internal changes, not constantly looking abroad!!! companies and farmers making profit with high price of goods and constant purchasing power? In scale of preference, between closing the border to help rice sector and providing enabling environment for businesses to grow which comes first? And which one will employ more in Long and short run? Which one will reduce the pain of the citizens in long and short run? I hope my questions aren't shallow? |

Angelfrost: You are right... But, what do you want over 30 million business people to do (Most into small and medium scale business)??!... The least we can do in the face of these daunting challenges is patronize them fully, if not solely. Not everyone has the wherewithal to relocate... in other words, those doing business outside here are terribly small compared to those slugging it out here.
Nigeria, good or bad, is all over 100 million people have... is closing the border the solution to our problems? Do you know that if electricity and good roads are provided and loans for business minds it will generate employments more than what rice can provide for us. |
Politics › Re: GUTA Locks Up Nigerians’ Shops In Kumasi by Empredboy(m): 9:14am On Nov 01, 2019 |
Angelfrost: If push comes to shove, the growth of Nigeria local industry is a bigger priority than how well Nigerian owned businesses fare beyond these shores... It's quite simple sir. can you boast that government policy has been fair to local businesses ? No electricity to help business instead its the final consumer who pays the high cost of goods, no good road to transport goods from point to point, do we have insurance cover for our goods. What of health Care? If you have been to these west Africa countries you will know that Nigeria is the worst place to do businesses. our production cost is highest because of no constant power ,different taxes from local, state and federal government, |

LAGOS – As the impact of the closure of Nigerian land borders continues to bite, more than 98 firms operating in the country have relocated to other countries in West Africa in the past three weeks, while others have lost millions of naira and are near collapse. Comrade Saviour Iche, the national president of the Association of Micro-Entrepreneurs of Nigeria (AMEN), made the disclosure while speaking at a press conference in Lagos at the weekend. He stated the said the companies moved to other countries because of the negative impact the border closure was having on their businesses, adding that many others will follow suit if the situation persist. He said that operating environment in other countries in west Africa are better, adding that governments of other countries offer incentives and support to entrepreneurs. He said the closure of the borders has had some positive effect like increased revenue for the government, but argued that the negative impact was greater on the general economy. According to him, there are many Nigerian businesses that export their goods and services across Nigerian borders, adding that most of these companies are losing millions of naira on a daily basis. Iche disclosed that many of them have reduced their operations and their number of workers, adding that if the situation continues, many of them will close shop soon. https://www.independent.ng/border-closure-98-firms-relocate-others-lose-millions/?fbclid=IwAR3mTW7Mb8pnzStjx9YU89kEBHEV2CR3fgq6YYyJ63tv7aD2i6WBCH75e7A

Olominira: The border closure would get manufacturers that are relocating from Nigeria to Ghana to have a second thought. You're leaving Nigeria for Ghana, at the same time targeting Nigerian markets. Ghana and other neighbors are actually more favoured to benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Agreement where companies would be setting up their offices and factories in neighboring countries with Nigeria markets in minds. A development that would further increase unemployment in the country, as well as cause many young Nigerians to emigrate to these small countries and become slaves.
I can see that the Buhari economic group has seen this coming. Now, the FG needs to up her games in electricity, roads, good business policy and others. Nigeria shouldn't sell her rights in west Africa to any country, small time they'd be mocking the country for loosing factories to countries that are not up to one state despite the huge population and economy. you can't force a horse to drink water. Let your government fix power, road, security and governance then see the magic fall into place. |
