Tithing didn't start with the Law of Moses. Abraham paid tithe several years before the Law of Moses was given. Jacob, his grandson vowed to give God a tenth of what he receives. He didn't limit it to gains.

So, the church pays tithe because Abraham, our father of faith did. And the scripture says that we should walk in the footsteps of Abraham.

These are misconceptions about Tithe and wrong interpretation of Heb 7:11-12.

There's no commandment in the NT to pay Tithe simply because the commandment already be given in the OT in which Jesus Himself will fulfill, so Jesus can't just annull Tithing because it's part of His mission.

Biblical consummation is how Jesus fulfilled the Hebrew scriptures in Himself that is bringing their TRUE MEANING INTO REALITY.

Tithing started before the law, just as SABBATH DAY and Circumcision also are before the law and finally made it to the law.

So the right question to ask will be why was Tithe included in the law?

This will be a lengthy post if I should address it all but I'll just try to summarise it!

From above we can see that, Tithe, Sabbath Day and Circumcision practiced before the law and accordingly the scriptures these three practices are considered 'ETERNAL PRACTICES!'

I will focus on Tithe now!

Jesus made a statement in Matt 23:23 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens,[g] but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things."

This is not a commandment but a reference to existing law but here we can see that Jesus didn't condemn Tithe rather supported it.

So, why did Tithe make it to the law?

Simple answer: it's part of eternal practice like Sabbath Day and Circumcision.

That is why the writer of the book of Hebrew after talking about the basic teaching about Christ says "So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding." Heb 6:1

To go into mature teaching, the write took the silent statement of Christ in Matt 23:23 to reveal the eternal practice of Tithe. This he did by alluded to Melchizedek!

"Consider then how great this Melchizedek was. Even Abraham, the great patriarch of Israel, recognized this by giving him a tenth of what he had taken in battle. Now the law of Moses required that the priests, who are descendants of Levi, must collect a tithe from the rest of the people of Israel,[a] who are also descendants of Abraham. But Melchizedek, who was not a descendant of Levi, collected a tenth from Abraham. And Melchizedek placed a blessing upon Abraham, the one who had already received the promises of God.

The points here are:
1. Melchizedek is so great.
2. Abraham recognises HIS GREATNESS and that makes Abraham to give Him Tithe.
3. This act places Melchizedek a far Higher Priest who qualifies to operate as a priest and was never part of the Levi (Levi never even come on board in the first place).

So, what is the correlation her?
Melchizedek was considered ETERNAL HIGH PRIEST that is why the same scripture says he was made to be like THE SON OF GOD.

Which means, as long as there is A PRIEST Tithing law remains.

In line of this, Jesus came in ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK and Jesus became the High Priest.

In conclusion:
Just like other laws like Sabbath Day and Circumcision when Christ fulfill them in His body, the laws took a new dimension which means they are not view the ways they were revealed.

Like Sabbath Day, we understand that it's an eternal rest for the believers and not just a worship on Saturday or any day and the physical circumcision is just a reminder of our spiritual broken hearted.

Though some preachers might have laid too much emphasis on Tithe and some might have abused it and made it to be a burden to their members.

Most people against Tithe didn't even know that Tithe is just like a peanut to other avenues some preachers are generating money.

Heb 7:11-12 is about the law that empowers the Levites to be a Priest that needs to change since the new High Priest Jesus Christ didn't come from the Levites.
