1. They follow the tradition of the Jews of not pronouncing the name and used Lord in place wherever the name is used.
2. The pronunciation of the name has lost even though an attempt has been made to restore its pronunciation which can't still be term original.
3. Base on the NT manuscripts in possession today, no single place where the name was used by any New Testament writers.

Who gave them the authority that the use of God's name is no longer appropriate?

This has happened even before Jesus was born and during the time of Jesus.
