1:7. For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ [as] coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
1:8. Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but [that] we may receive a full reward.
1:9. Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
1:10. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him;
1:11. for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.
1:12. Having many things to write to you, I did not wish [to do so] with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

*MESSAGE:*

This is a note of caution from the Apostle on the back of the activities of false teachers and deceivers, amongst God's people. Those false teachers denied the humanity (the incarnation) of Christ. And for us today, they are those who teach the concept of sexual liberality, irresponsible Christianity, moral looseness, feminism, etc. Some say that all you need to do is to confess Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior; and regardless of what you do afterwards, you will be fine.

In order for us not to lose and be lost, John says we should look to ourselves. He said we should beware of being like them, thereby losing the prize that we have been working so hard to get. It is the reason Paul said to the Philippians (2: 12-13): _Work out our salvation with fear and trembling. He said to the Corinthians: Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall_ (1 Cor. 10: 12). We should not become so unguarded to the point of missing our bearing.

5:1. Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.
5:2. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments.
5:3. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
5:4. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world -- our faith.
5:5. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

*MESSAGE:*

One can secure obedience by the use of force or threat of punishment. However, true obedience comes from conviction or faith. In this passage, we see that love and obedience are more like Siamese twins that cannot be separated. No man can say he has love for God when he disobeys God's instructions. There is nothing we cannot give up when love is involved. When we love God, our lusts and evil pleasures will be easy to abandon.

John gave us an equation that can help us examine ourselves daily. He says if we love God, we must love God's children. One way to know that we have love is when we obey God's commandments. John also said that it is not possible to love God if we are not born of God. He added that if we are not born of God, we cannot overcome the world; and we cannot be born of God until we first believe that Jesus is the Son of God. We must believe in His immaculate conception and in His deity.

(Advent 2) TOPIC: DARKNESS IN THE MIDST OF LIGHT
READ: ISAIAH 9: 1-7 (NKJV)

9:1. Nevertheless the gloom [will] not [be] upon her who [is] distressed, As when at first He lightly esteemed The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, And afterward more heavily oppressed [her,] [By] the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, In Galilee of the Gentiles.
9:2. The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined.
9:3. You have multiplied the nation [And] increased its joy; They rejoice before You According to the joy of harvest, As [men] rejoice when they divide the spoil.
9:4. For You have broken the yoke of his burden And the staff of his shoulder, The rod of his oppressor, As in the day of Midian.
9:5. For every warrior's sandal from the noisy battle, And garments rolled in blood, Will be used for burning [and] fuel of fire.
9:6. For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
9:7. Of the increase of [His] government and peace [There will be] no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

THE MESSAGE:

Advent focuses on John the Baptist, the Gentiles being included in God's family, Christ's coming in judgment and peace, and the Church's hopeful expectation of the completion of His promises. Today's passage is one of the Messianic prophecies of Isaiah. It partly says: _“The people who dwelt in darkness have seen a great light."_ Jesus' birth brought the fulfillment of this prophecy. John later said of Him: "... in Him was life and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4). Before the creation of the 1st Adam, the world was full of darkness; without form and void. And God said 'let there be light and there was light.' Similarly, before the coming of the 2nd Adam (the Great Light), the earth was filled with spiritual darkness.

However, though all who sat in darkness saw the great light, there was no guarantee that they all left darkness. Though darkness did not comprehend the light, the light did not “kill” darkness. Darkness left the public space where the light appeared and entered into the private residence prepared by men who loved darkness. Beloved, darkness has lost its legal authority over you by Christ's birth and death. As we look forward to another Christmas, let us ask the Lord to shed His light in every darkened spot in our lives.

PRAYER: Lord, may I experience You, the Great Light, to the fullest and in its fullness, Amen!

*TEXT:* 1 JOHN 3: 13-24 _*(NKJV)*_

3:13. Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you.
3:14. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love [his] brother abides in death.
3:15. Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
3:16. By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down [our] lives for the brethren.
3:17. But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
3:18. My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
3:19. And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.
3:20. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
3:21. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.

3:24. Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

*MESSAGE:*

This passage brings another perspective into our understanding of 'love.' The apostle presented 'love' as a transporter which knows no barrier. It breaks barriers and demarcations. The confirmation of our destination is shown by the love we possess. Love is a spiritual transmission-agent that changes a man's location; from death to life. At the exit gate of death, love is the ticket required for passage. Love is that thing that empties a man (v.17), even of his blood, for the sake of his neighbor.

The language of love is sacrifice; it is expressed not in word but in deed. There is no price it cannot pay; there is no gate it cannot open; there is no weakness it cannot tolerate; there is no offense it cannot forgive and there is no evil it cannot overcome. A demonstration of love is an assurance that we are living in the truth of God's word and it is the insurance of our hearts in the presence of God. Beloved, what sacrifice have you made for God and for man
