*TEXT:* PHILIPPIANS 2: 17-18 (NKJV)

2:17. Yes, and if I am being poured out [as a drink offering] on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.
2:18. For the same reason you also be glad and rejoice with me.

*MESSAGE:*

Drink offering relates to a form of libation which formed one of the sacrifices and offerings in the Law of Moses. Apostle Paul employed simile as a figure of speech to explain to his listeners that he was ready and willing to give his life which would serve as drink offering to God. He also said that he would rejoice and be glad to do so as long as it would deepen their faith and love for Christ Jesus and provoke them to more service in God. What a sacrificial love! Paul was ready to go to any extent to prove his love and commitment, not only to God who called him but also to his spiritual children who looked up to him as a model.

Spiritual leadership is about love and sacrifice. When the chips are down to prove your love, even to the laying down of your life (being poured like a drink offering), will you be ready? Whatever is not worth dying for is not worth living for! The extent to which you are ready to go for your chosen course would determine your influence and impact. As you work for and walk with God in faith, there will be occasions when your existence will be threatened and death will stare you clearly in the face. You must take it with courage and rejoice because it will not be in vain. As in the words of Apostle Paul, let our words be _“I will rejoice even ifI lose my life, pouring it out like a liquid offering to God”_ (v.17).

Dear Father, grant me the courage to love and sacrifice for You all the days of my life in Jesus' Name. _*Amen*_

*MESSAGE:*
Attitude refers to a person's state of mind about situations and circumstances and his/her reactions to such circumstances. It is the view an individual holds about an issue or event which determines his or her response per time. It also involves one's opinions about people, places and events, and inform actions within given times; it can be positive or negative. Apostle Paul charged the Philippian brethren, and indeed all Christians, to have the same mind as Christ Who being in the nature of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, made Himself nothing, and humbled Himself to death, even death of the cross (vv. 5 & 6).

The way of the cross is the way of life. If one desires to go up, one must be ready to humble himself first and wait for God's lifting. The way of God is not in self-lifting but God's elevation. Death on the cross remains one of the crudest and most cruel ways to die. Christ had the option of refusing to die but for the purpose of achieving God's plan of salvation for human kind, He submitted Himself to the death on the cross. Not only this, it is on record that He refused to rub shoulder with God or count Himself equal with God though being in the very nature of God. The attitude of Christ will not get involved in unhealthy rivalry or ego display. Jesus put on the garment of a servant who avoided unnecessary attention to either Himself or His accomplishment. This attitude brings God's blessings and approval.

Humility is the state of being selfless, meek and modest. It involves putting other people first and considering them better than oneself. In our text today, Apostle Paul admonished the Philippian church to do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain pride. To be humble means to acknowledge God's assistance and contribution of others in one's life and be ready to accord glory to God almighty and appreciate every assistance received from others in our successes. Without God, we cannot accomplish anything (John 15: 5). A full understanding of this fact will help us to know that whatever we have or are capable of doing comes from God. This understanding will make it easier for us to acknowledge the grace of God and never look down on others or feel superior to them.

We must understand that no one is independent of God and other people, in fact, our strength and ability flow from God and people around us. We must never forget that God gives grace to the humble but resists the proud (James 4: 6). How beautiful life would be ifall we do and say is done in humility! The church of God will be edified and more grace will be released from heaven. Make humility your watchword!

97:1. The LORD reigns; Let the earth rejoice; Let the multitude of isles be glad!
97:2. Clouds and darkness surround Him; Righteousness and justice [are] the foundation of His throne.
97:3. A fire goes before Him, And burns up His enemies round about.
97:4. His lightnings light the world; The earth sees and trembles.
97:5. The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the LORD, At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
97:6. The heavens declare His righteousness, And all the peoples see His glory.
97:7. Let all be put to shame who serve carved images, Who boast of idols. Worship Him, all [you] gods.

✝️ STUDY: God is supreme - in sovereignty, power and works. There is no other like Him in heaven and on earth. The writer of Psalm 97 describes the sovereignty of God as being enthroned over all things. Some of his description are as follows: He ensures justice for those deprived (v.2b); He reigns in victory over his enemies (v.3); He lightens the troubles of His people (v.4); mountains of afflictions melt at his presence (v.5); He reveals his glory to his people (v.6); He covers idol worshipers with shame (v.7); His judgment brings rejoicing to his people (v.; He delivers his people from the hands of the wicked (v.10b). Above all, it is necessary and important to give thanks each time His name is mentioned, because He reigns. The sovereignty of God as declared by the writer of this Psalm and in many other parts of the Bible is to encourage and strengthen our faith in God. No matter the negative the situations we find ourselves in, we should rely on His sovereign authority. He exercises supreme reign over our troubles and we must remember that nothing rises above the control of God. We are encouraged to accept Him as Lord over all situations, love Him with all our hearts and hate evil. You can cast your care upon Him because He cares for you (1 Pet.5: 7).

🎯TOPIC: SUFFERING IN CHRIST



✝️ TEXT: Philippians 1: 12-18(NKJV)
1:12. But I want you to know, brethren, that the things [which happened] to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel,
1:13. so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ;
1:14. and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
1:15. Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from good will:
1:16. The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains;
1:17. but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel.
1:18. What then? Only [that] in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.

✝️ STUDY: In our passage yesterday, Paul referred to his suffering as grace, in Philippians 1:7. In our text today, Paul declares that all the afflictions he passed through actually led to the expansion of the gospel of Christ. He notes that some preached the gospel for negative reasons and to make worse his chains, yet it was Christ they preached. Though such preachers may end up suffering, they will not be regarded as doing so for Christ. “But let none of you suffer as a murderer or as a thief or as an evildoer or as busybody in other men's matter (1 Pet. 4: 15). The kind of suffering Paul talks about here is the one encountered by those who have genuine birth in Christ, either for preaching the gospel or for righteousness sake, “For it is better if the will of God be so, that you suffer for well doing, than for evil doing(1 Pet.3: 17).Suffering for Christ's sake is not a curse for Christians, but a blessing. Whoever passes through such suffering is encouraged to keep the faith in all joy for the manifestation of the gospel. It should be the yearning of every Christian to share in the suffering of Christ. “But rejoice, in as much as you are partakers of Christ sufferings, that when his glory shall be revealed, you may be glad also with exceeding joy. If any man suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed. But let him glorify God on this behalf. Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful creator”(1Pet.4: 13, vv16, vv19.)
