THOUSANDS of students in public schools in Osun were on Monday sent home over failure to pay school fees of N7,710 for the second term, which began in January 2018, Nigerian Tribune authoritatively gathered.

A large number of students, whose parents have not paid their fees were directed by their respective school’s management to vacate the premises of the school with immediate effect.
Sources informed our correspondent that the order to prevent such students from partaking in any form of academic activity commenced last week and it continued on Monday morning as many of the defaulting pupils were spotted roaming the streets of Osogbo, the state capital around 11.15 am.
Some of the affected students from Osogbo Government High School, Baptist High School, Ataoja Government High School, Salvation Army Middle School, Osogbo, among others, who spoke to the Nigerian Tribune urged the state government to be considerate and give their parents more time to pay their fees.

One of the students, identified as Segun Adegoke, who is in Grade 10 (SS1) stated that he was owing N7,710 for the second term, explaining that the fees excluded N1,000 lesson fees per term and evidence of tax payment from his parent.

When contacted, Osun State Commissioner for Education, Mr Kola Young, who spoke during a telephone chat with the Nigerian Tribune said he needed to read the text message forwarded to him before he could respond on the issue, adding that he was holding a meeting

The text message reads, “school fees are not paid in any Osun public, elementary, middle or high school. So, no student in Osun schools can or should be sent home for any school fees. Students, however, have been directed to show evidence of payment by their parents of taxes and Education Trust Levies.

We all know that everywhere in the world, successful economies depend on the payment of taxes by their productive citizens.”

Which way are we going Nigerians? Are we serious about solving our problems or just surrounding one man with hate because another election is around the corner? If we so much care about those killed in Benue why is there little or no discussion about the real problem and solutions for preventing further killings? Why are u not holding Gov Ortom as the Chief Security officer for Benue responsible? Why are you not asking him what he has done with the huge annual security votes? And how many of the armchair critics of Buhari have read the relevant Benue State grazing law and how many know how it is being implemented. Instead, people are more interested in manipulating our heads and our minds for the purpose of making the wrongs of PDP forgivable for the coming elections.
Let’s find a way round APC and PDP. Let's solve Nigerian problems holistically instead of this attempt to turn us into mumus by hatred for one man and his ethnicity. Do not allow politicians turn your eyes away from the real problems of most Nigerians. These include corruption, an ineffective democratic system, expensive food, inadequate housing, high cost of transportation, poor health services, fuel shortages, irregular power supply, graduate unemployment, poor funding of education and lopsided appointments and employment into the Federal Civil Service. Etc

Governors and leaders of some key socio-cultural organisations in the southern part of the country have rejected the proposed plan by the Federal Government to establish cattle colonies in all the states of the federation.

They described the arrangement as a ploy to forcefully snatch lands for the use of Fulani armed militia who, according to them, will sooner than later, unleash terror on their host communities.

They also warned state governments not to be naïve in embracing the proposal which they alleged was aimed at creating a large expanse of land for a group of terrorists.

The Ebonyi State Government described the proposed cattle colony as a strange and deceptive concept designed to dispossess states of their treasure.

It therefore advocated the adoption of a ranching system as a panacea for curbing the incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers across the country.

Governor David Umahi, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Uzor, said, “The proposed cattle colony is strange to the state government because it is a deceptive arrangement to dispossess us of our precious lands.”


Ekiti, Abia, Imo also reject cattle colonies

Also. Governors Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and the leadership of the Imo State House of Assembly have ruled out any plan to release land for the proposed cattle colonies.

Fayose, who spoke through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said, Ekiti will not surrender its land for any cattle colonies.

He said, “We don’t give ponds to fish farmers; government does not give pens to poultry farmers, and does not give shops to traders because they are all businessmen.

“A cattle breeder should get a cattle ranch because he is a businessman. We will not surrender our land for any cattle colony.”

Ikpeazu, who also spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Enyinnaya Appolos, said the state would reject plans to establish “any Fulani colony in Abia State.”

He said, “We reject any plan to establish cattle colonies for herdsmen in Abia State. We don’t have enough land for our agricultural activities and our people want more land to farm.”
