Unemployment can simply be said to be the level of joblessness in economy. According to National Bureau of Statistics, unemployment rate in Nigeria is at 14.2%, the big question is who do we blame for this rise in unemployment rate.

Well no one but our government is to be blamed for this although some may argue that the people are to be blamed but it’s because we’ve been programmed to believe we’re meant to provide for ourselves the things that should necessary be provided by the government like electricity (we power ourselves with generators), security (we pay for nightguards to keep us safe at night) and now employment when one of the responsibilities of our government is the provision of job opportunities.

Nigerians are hardworking people yet they earn little, which makes several jobs undesirable even those who are seemingly employed are more or less unemployed as they are either underpaid or not paid at all for months.

Those who create job opportunities for themselves by establishing businesses are also often frustrated out of the business by the government due to imposition of taxes and local government charges so they are often left with little to earn as profit.

Unemployment in Nigeria: The Solution

Our government can alleviate these unemployment challenges through the following ways:

Encouraging foreign investors to not only establish businesses in the country but also ensure that qualified citizens of Nigeria are employed to hold vacant positions in these firms
Creating an enabling environment for people to establish businesses through loosening of tax laws and the stringent procedures in licensing businesses.
Better accessibility and reduction in interest rate on loans for business owners.
Establishment of employment programs for artisans and small business owners.
Adequate provision of power/electricity which is one of the major needs of every business in Nigeria.

Society for Family Health (SFH) has revealed that Nigerians consume over 400 million condoms annually.

Speaking in Lagos on Tuesday during the launch of Flex condom, the Managing Director of Society for Family Health, Bright Ekweremadu, disclosed that the 400 million condom consumption may still be far below the NGO’s estimation of what is required, considering the high rate of unprotected sex in the country.

The SFH's boss said the new brand of condom which comes with a lot of flavours, has more strength and could last longer during the period.

“We have been in the business of condom production for over 30 years. We have done a lot of things in educating people to embrace abstinence with our zip-up campaign. There are obviously sexually active Nigerians who may not totally abstain from sex and this led to our alternative, particularly at this time when HIV/AIDs is prevalent in the country,” he said.

Ekweremadu stated the commitment of his organization to continually make condoms available to Nigerians at affordable prices, as the condoms are subsidized by donor agencies.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted a request by Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, for a temporary forfeiture of all funds held in bank accounts not linked to BVN — and whose ownership could not be absolutely identified.

The court also granted the Nigerian government the authority to seize all funds held in accounts without proper documentation of account owners’ credentials, according to a report by the PREMIUM TIMES.

It is widely speculated that thousands of bank accounts containing billions of Naira remain unlinked to BVN since the CBN instructed commercial banks to halt the BVN enrolment exercise in 2015.

The presiding Judge, Nnamdi Dimgba, ordered all the 19 deposit money banks (DMBs), operating in the country to release to Nigerian government names of accounts not yet connected to BVN; account numbers; their outstanding balances; domiciling locations; and domiciliary accounts without BVN and where they are domiciled, PREMIUM TIMES reports.

Nigerian deposit money banks listed as respondents in the ex-parte suit are: Access Bank, Citi Bank, Diamond Bank, Ecobank, Fidelity Bank, First Bank and First City Monument Bank. Guarantee Trust Bank, Heritage Bank, Keystone Bank, Skye Bank, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Sterling Bank, Union Bank and United Bank for Africa, Unity Bank, Wema Bank and Zenith Bank.

The court ordered all commercial banks to disclose any investments made with funds and to withhold authorisation for any outward inflow of funds from the accounts. They are also compelled to submit all details of such transactions to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System, NIBSS, and the CBN for authentication.

The judge directed all concerned banks to publish all bank accounts not linked to BVN in national newspapers with a 14-day notice for parties with interest in such accounts to come forward and justify why their funds should not be forfeited to the Nigerian government.

The CBN, a joint respondent alongside the 19 DMBs, was also ordered to appoint an official who will examine all the details submitted to the apex bank for compliance.

This latest directive is in line with Section 3 of the Money Laundering Act, 2011, which states that banks must, “ensure that documents, data or information collected under the customer due diligence process is kept up-to-date and relevant by undertaking reviews of existing records, particularly for higher risk categories of customers or business relationships.”
