I think the misunderstanding or debate is on the meaning of marriage. To you marriage is when the couple tie the knot in a church or some other official ceremony. Let's take a small residential building for a example. There are four christians, an atheist and a muslim.

Four christians, four denominations. A catholic, a protestant, a methodist and a witness.

You claim one god, yet you are overly conscious of your neighbour. Your are worried that he is on the path to destruction. He should come over to your church if he wants to "fully accept christ".

So you engage each other in conversations every evening, one bringing up why he's is right and true. You nod and smile and try to counter their argument with the same religious text. Each of you claim "god wants _ to worship him truly" and evidently your church is where god rests his butt cheeks.

What about the atheist and the muslim? You can't engage him because "he's lost already" or are you afraid your own faith will wane? You ignore the muslim because you're afraid he will hack you with a machete?

In the end it's not the religion/lack of religion that worries you but how much it conforms to your own ideologies. That's why it's always funny when one christian says he's converted another christian. It's like turning rice from one pot to another. The bullsh*t is still the same, only the container is different.
