I thought they were all shouting 'we want CHANGE'. Oya now, see the change. Nigerians always attaching sentiment to politics, instead of truth, fairness and transparency. Smh Nigerians are quite sentimental agreed, but concerning the bolded you surely can't be implying that Jonathan stood for "truth, fairness and transparency" If he did, he would definitely still be the president today |

donhils: Do you know you shouldn't be talking mainly about mtn breaking rules. If you are given a stone to throw first if you haven't ever broken any rule before, would you? Have you kept all the comments of God? Cos to me you don't seem to have kept the part that says love your neighbor as thyself. In that case we shouldn't even bother having rules at all since no human can keep God's commandments. Any company can do whatever it likes however it likes whenever it likes with no repercussion. Great. Absolutely great. |

mbulela: you did not follow my argument. My views on the fine is well documented here. I am simply addressing the hate for MTN being justified because of xenophobic attacks in SA. The fine is justified because they broke the rule and not for any other reason. My point about the xenophobic attacks is that Nigerians should not be sympathetic or emotional about this fine because if South African were in Nigeria's shoes, they would not. Let us all stick by the rules. Eod. |

donhils: In that case, you don't know how it all started. Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo literally begged Vodacom to come and do business in Nigeria and they told him straight to his face that Nigeria couldn't afford telephone. He met other companies also and they declined. MTN agreed to do what others considered impossible and did it. After they had succeeded and reported huge profits (good or bad) others started coming. So to me, they came to help. That's why I so much love MTN's latest advert on TV ( when they said it was impossible we were there, when no one gave them a chance we were there.......and finally they wrapped it up by saying at MTN we believe that Nigeria's future holds even more promise than our past). My God, that is love for Nigeria. So has MTN been giving subscribers free calls, data and text? NO Has MTN been making money for as long as they've been in Nigeria? YES MTN would never have come to Nigeria or even stayed after they did if they wouldn't make SIGNIFICANT PROFIT. It is a business and the purpose is to make profit, any other reason is by the side. Companies have existed and done business in worse terrains as long as they are making a profit so please MTN did not help anyone. The Advertising manager must be doing a great job for their adverts to appeal to emotions but advert or no advert, MTN is a profit-making venture which flouted rules it was aware of, basically showing disdain for its host country and that should not be tolerated. |

MYMINDER: Make points with logic and not emotion.
Was the fine computation known before now to all telecommunications providers? Yes! Did MTN violate? Yes! Should MTN pay the fine (that the penalty was known way in advance of transgression?) Yes!
SA did not approve any license for any Nigerian bank. Is that not Draconian? Nigerian banks moved on and life continued.
The 5.2m active subscribers that had unregistered sim cards on the MTN network is too much! Thank you. I don't under the sentimentalism being displayed on this thread. MTN should PAY UP. End of story. If they had not broken the rules which as you rightly pointed out they KNEW IN ADVANCE no one would be hounding them. Era of companies doing what they like in Nigeria and getting away with it has to end. |

mbulela: How is this related to the issue at hand? I struggle to understand the hatred for MTN. What have they done to attract this hatred? And what does a fine have to do with hatred for MTN? They broke the rules, they should pay up. Simple! After all if they had kept the rules no one would be breathing down their neck. |

oribi: YES IT IS A BUSINESS AGREED BUT AT LEAST THEY EMPLOY NIGERIANS AND PUT MEAL ON MANY TABLES IN NIGERIA I understand where you are coming from but this short term approach never ever pays in the long run. If we continue using the excuse of they employ Nigerians so therefore let them get away with what they like, the nation will NOT progress. Although it is painful, this just has to be done and in the long term is in the best interest of the country. |

It was ONLY MTN that violated the law. Other telecomms companies had deactivated the sim cards as they should have done. |

Who will fine PHCN for poor power supply ?
who will fine NNPC for oil importation rackets ?
who will fine Dangote Cement for not complying to the FG's directive to reduce cement cost ?
who will fine the oil marketers who constantly cause fuel scarcity thereby causing hardship on Nigeria ?
who will fine the President for failled promises and for failling to constitute his cabinet asap when the new Canadian PM did his within the week he took oath of office thereby hitting the ground running on policy formulation and execution.
e.t.c
Even if MTN had violated your rules should you use a sledge hammer to kill a mouse? N1trillion! for a socially responsible company like MTN is too much. It will kill that company and it will also send wrong signals with respect to FDI. N100 Billion max is still ok to effect your corrective punishment without hurting the economic eco-system of that telecom giant!
When they decide to sack half of their Nigerian employees and they automate their jobs ( this is technology age ) what do you think would happen to the families that would be affected? so much for tackling un-employment! now, influx to the labour market will increase. At worst, MTN share holders would loose some monies but for Nigerian families connected to MTN, they would loose their means of livelihood.
NIGERIA ... THINK! So for the sake of a few, we should give MTN a pass right? I don't understand this sympathy towards MTN, when South Africans were attacking Nigerians barely how many months ago, did South Africans show any sympathy to Nigeria? Please let us stick to the game. MTN broke the rules and should pay the price end of story. |

donhils: Since the announcement of this fine on MTN, many Nigerians have rejoiced and danced over it. But set prejudice aside, what wrong has MTN really done to anybody? I'll answer that, None. MTN is and will still remain the all round best network provider here in Nigeria until Glo that is supposed to be the leader (having that indigenous edge) steps up to the responsibility. So why all the hates? Let's talk about NCC for a bit, what exactly were they thinking slamming such huge amounts on a company that's here to help? Has NCC lived up to its responsibilities? All networks being nuisance to the customers thru unsolicited texts and calls, stealing from the unsuspecting public. Have they moved to stop all these nonsense? What is NCC doing to improve the quality of services? Have they looked into the exorbitant rates of data in the industry? What have they done to better the lives of Nigerians? After MTN have paid 1.4trillion, then what next? What is the spirit behind this fine? And Nigeirans are rejoicing. MTN is not here to help anyone, they are here to make money simple. Other points you made I agree with, particularly the quality of service and rates. |

DelGardo: The vice president of Nigeria is traditionally in charge of the economy.
The economy under Jonathan was in tatters because Jona had no clue and Sambo was a ghost worker.
Osinbajo, on the other hand, seems to have a good grip on things. Long may it continue.

HopeAtHand: I know of some SWesterners that were employed by Shell last week.i agree we are all Nigerians but those of us from oil bearing communities feel the brunt whenever their is fault with their pipelines or instruments and should be duly employed. This biased recruitment trend doesnt seem like it will abate soon..
Very pathetic. It doesn't work that way. I believe a number of the IOCs have quotas for the South South region already, to call their recruitment biased simply because they employed "SWesterners" is wrong. At the end of the day, it is all about getting qualified hands who will deliver results and if the qualified hand happens to be a non-South South person then why not? Merit should trump tribalism. Plus as I mentioned already, there are quotas in place. |

Richy4: Mine was not a move. I got punished for nothing
he was like hmmmmm!!! that was a second offence disobeying a senior student. so are you telling me you are too big to kneel down?
he started creating a scene in the hostel. so all his mates gathered around us to know what went wrong.by then I was still in the dark because i did not know what i did. he told them that he walked passed me with my babe on our way to the hostel and i did not greet him. that he even greeted us and we did not answer him. I remembered that my mouth was opened on those terrible lies.
The rest of the seniors were really angry. they said i deserved to be given a maximum punishment. in fact all ss2 student should come outside of their rooms that our ego was getting too much. luckily the senior prefect intervened as all SS2 was not punished. I was just the only one that was asked to use tea spoons to transfer water from one full bucket to the other empty one
when I asked the girl if she has had any thing to do with that senior, she said he wanted to befriend her and she turned him down. she was really apologetic.
Sorry for sharing this here. the memory just came rushing back. wicked punishment That transfer would take hours to finish, chai |
