victorazy: That is not what I meant sister. I mean he should apply wisdom by carrying his superior along. Involve her in your ideas even when she has nothing to contribute.
Am an architect and I ones faced the same problem and I used sense.
We have our CEO and he is in UK but I have my senior architect who is also a pastor. During our project with CBN Kano, I was the one doing all brain works here and sometimes our CEO will contribute via Skype but my MD here who have to be pastor never contributed cuz of no time as a pastor and I understood him. After everything, I will send the drawing to him (pastor) also brief of what I did then will forward it to CEO in UK as if he is the brain behind all and we lived peacefully. Okay, I get your point now and understand what you are saying. I do agree with you that wisdom is key. |

victorazy: Outshining a master is a very dangerous thing to do. That is the problem with the Nigerian workplace. People would rather have their egos massaged than for the business to move forward. People are more comfortable with the status-quo, they don't want challenges neither do they want to grow. This is not helping us as a country at all. |

herrdeustch: Please give our guy here a soft landing.Dont misinterpret people because people are different and God gave us all different capabilities. Some people are game changers and innovators who constantly make powerful contributions to their organization, society etc.Unfortunately many nigerians see them as oversabi or a threat which is unfortunate and one of the reasons why nigeria is not moving forward. If the boss was a wise person, instead of feeling intimidated, she will groom the young man, menthor him, repackage him, utilize him, and make him her loyalist as well as develop him .By doing so, value has been added to everyone involved especially herself and the company. So far I see passion in the young man and not pride, but this experience will give him much needed experience in working with people which is like a school of its own. Thank you. This seems peculiar to Nigeria / a Nigerian thing. Here at work we are constantly challenged to bring up new ideas as individuals and as a team, it is encouraged and nurtured. My naija people would rather sit down and be blowing grammar "never outshine the master" and we wonder why the nation does not progress |

48 LAWS OF POWER People keep using this quote everywhere but I still don't think this addresses the poster's need. How he should he handle the situation without dumbing himself down? We need creative suggestions please rather than simply saying never outshine the master. |

lawanson44: So the Oba knew that if people entered lagoon, they will die abi? Then why did he ask Igbos to go and jump into the Lagoon? I am not in support of what the Oba said which was very wrong, my point is it is not necessary to come down to the same level as the Oba by wishing death on his relatives (who may not even support what he said!) Let's rise above the hate. Cheers |

What an Irony!
I wish the Oba's relatives was among them
Sometimes it's actually a good idea to say nothing. You are wishing some unknown relatives death as if you or any human has power over death, I really do smh. Sad what tribalism had turned some people into. RIP to Peter Bello. May his family be comforted, Amen. |

Eruditor: Laudate,
I am not sure you read the article well. Or maybe your primordial dislike for his background or ideologies is tainting your understanding of some of his actions.
The article said 2 things.
1. About 800 of the 1000 were already on their way out due to AGE and years of service.
2. That he is not responsible for the lower cadre retrenchments. He only handled that of the GEDs, GGMs and GMs and he has delegated the responsibility of weeding out redundant, unproductive, overaged and overworked staff to those below him.
It is also important to take note that there is an ongoing recruitment process for EH and GT that I am sure will be used to replace some of the redundant workers in due time. Exactly, I don't think people take time to read before commenting. Or maybe comprehending is the issue, really don't know. |

laudate: Very funny! Provide proof please, that the entire 1,000 people were incompetent. This is one problem with Nigeria. You guys will shout blue murder if the affected people are your kinsmen, but as long as they remain faceless... you really do not care. There is something called professional experience, institutional memory etc. All these will be lost in a single day, because some clowns sat down and decided to lay off 1,000 people in one fell swoop instead of taking time out to conduct a thorough investigation, then gradually phase out those who are not pulling their weight, within the system. A well-structured handover and succession process would then be instituted, as these people gradually wind down, and leave the system. Was that done in this case?? Kindly let us know.
And where are the more competent people that are to be employed? Is it from the pool of unemployed graduates on our shores, that do not even know how to write a single business case or memo??
A man takes over as GMD of NNPC and in just one week decides that the first thing to do, is sack 1,000 people. It is not as if any process was automated, that made these people redundant. It is not that a new process or structure was instituted, that did not require the presence of so many people. It is not as if any major departmental function was outsourced. So what was the criteria used in laying off this huge number of staff?
What is the total number of staff employed by NNPC that would justify laying off 1,000 people? And do they even have enough money to pay off their terminal benefits in a timely manner?? "About 800 others are those that will attain the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or 35 years in service in the next one and a half years."These people would have left the service in a maximum of 2 years in any case |

We need help. Your point is totally valid,I'm sure some people found your original post too long to read. I loved Enid blyton books! Besides the foreign books, I read books by Nigerian and African authors - Chinua Achebe, Elechi Amadi, and that was because my secondary school emphasized it and my parents also encouraged it. Those that are not reading are missing out a lot, a whole lot. The other issue is how accessible are books to kids these days? How many functional libraries are available in Nigeria? How many school libraries are well equipped? It's a real shame, and I think the government needs to prioritize this. A generation that fails to read would fail to grow. |

Do you know how many Niger delta youths that have benefitted and still benefitting from amnesty sponsored trainings all over the world? If they have blood in their hands, tell me any freedom fighter that does have blood in his hand. Nelson Mandela that the world celebrate today also had blood in his hand. In case you have forgotten, it is the understanding of the militant commanders and their ability to see reason and give the federal government the benefit of doubt that restored peace in the Niger delta. This of course return oil production and revenue generation to the country Nigeria. You get it ? So does that justify the blood of all the people they killed during the period of their attacks?! |

Nnemuka: Good move by the youths.... Tomorrow they will give scholarships to hausa and yoruba kids while the children in the Niger delta cant boast of a good school anywhere in the region. Otedola and wale tinubu can use money stolen from illegal deals to support and build whatever in their region. Although i know there are scholarships specific to people from a particular region, the whole idea of a scholarship in the first place is to support brilliant but disadvantaged children. It's only in Nigeria that everything takes a tribal tone. |
