A young couple, Richard and Chidimma Benson,
have been detained by operatives of the Inspector
General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit for allegedly selling their one-week old baby boy for N200,000 to rent an apartment in the city.

The couple, who hail from Isiala-Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, confessed to the crime, saying it was hard times that forced them into the decision.

Narrating her part in the deal, the wife said: “I have given birth to four children, one is late. I have two now.

So when I became pregnant I told my husband
that we would sell the baby and use the money to
relocate from my village to township to start a better life. He refused but I forced him into agreeing with my plan. My husband is a labourer, he is a wheelbarrow pusher.


I owe debts everywhere and I needed to settle them. So, we sold the baby for N200,000 but I later learnt the baby was sold for N500,000.”

Her husband, Richard said: “we were owing N10,000 and the hardship was too much for us to bear. I went round seeking for help but no help came. We wanted to relocate to the township for a chance of a better life, that was why we sold the baby to enable us raise money and rent an apartment in the city.”


Parading the suspects alongside other seven child traffickers yesterday at the IGP complex in Aluu, Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers State, the
Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the IGP Monitoring Team, DCP Benneth Igwe, disclosed that the team rescued six pregnant women and arrested seven child traffickers in connection with the business.

President Buhari has said that the sheer desperation that makes Nigerian youths dare both the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea, all in the bid to take up menial jobs in Europe, is hurting the pride of the country and that his government will do everything it can to make Nigeria a liveable place for young men and women.


President Buhari said this during a farewell audience with the outgoing High Commissioner of the Republic of Namibia, His Excellency, Peingeondjabi Shipoh.

With great potentials in Africa, President Buhari decried illegal exodus to Europe, at grave risk to lives and limbs, and then pledged: "We will do our best to make our country live-able again."

The outgoing High Commissioner, who spent four
years and eleven months in Nigeria, said the country had become second home for himself and his family, submitting "I enjoyed great support in carrying out my duties.

I return home with absolute satisfaction that our two countries are more than ready for intra-African trade and exchange of state visits by the leaders. Our two countries have a lot in common, and Africa can only be developed by Africans themselves."

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has filed a petition at the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Osogbo to challenge the victory of the governor-elect, Gboyega Oyetola.

According to PUNCH, the petitioner and his party, the PDP, are praying the tribunal headed by Justice T.A. Igoche, to nullify the victory of the governor-elect and declare him the winner of the poll because he polled the highest number of lawful votes cast and met other requirements of the law.


The deputy governorship candidate of the PDP, Albert Adeogun; and the Chairman of the PDP in the state, Soji Adagunodo, led counsels who filed the petition at the tribunal registry.

Adagunodo, who addressed journalists after the filing of the petition, said the party and the first petitioner were optimistic of victory.

In a statement released by Atiku Media Office, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday, condemned the restriction of 50 Nigerians and seizure of their assets without due judicial pronouncement.


Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari announced in a statement on Saturday that some 50 persons have been barred from travelling out of the country, saying the move was to deprive them the benefits of depleting their alleged loot.

The Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar who emerged the major challenger to Buhari for 2019, said the order, which he described as a vestige of Buhari’s brutal dictatorship from the 1980s, was capable of devastating the Nigerian economy, and could at worse plunge the most-populous black nation into anarchy.

He said: “We must be unequivocal in saying that we abhor any act of criminality, financially or otherwise, but the rule of law must be our guide at all times or society will descend to anarchy. “Thus, we find it most undemocratic that in a nation governed by the rule of law, a President who swore an oath to abide by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, does this.

“It is a throwback to Buhari’s evil Decree Number Two of 1984 which criminalised truth telling if it did not please Buhari, proving that dictators can grow old, but they can’t grow into democrats.


“Under the Buhari administration, Nigeria has witnessed an unprecedented capital flight out of the nation to the extent that we are not even listed amongst the top ten recipients of Foreign Direct Investment in Africa in the latest ranking by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

Buhari’s Draconian Executive Order Would Lead to
Capital Flight and Another Recession Abuja, Nigeria, 14 October, 2018: Our attention has been
drawn to the statement by the Presidency banning 50 unnamed Nigerians from travelling out of the country, purportedly on the strength of Executive Order 6.

Their crime being that they are suspected of having property overseas and are involved in tax dodging or other alleged financial infractions. We must be unequivocal in saying that we abhor any
act of criminality, financially or otherwise, but the rule of law must be our guide at all times or society will descend to anarchy. Thus, we find it most undemocratic that in a nation governed by the rule of law, a President who swore an oath to abide by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, does this. If past events are to be the judge, these 50 individuals will conveniently be critics and opponents of the Buhari administration.


This is nothing short of intimidation
ahead of the 2019 elections. This is what the Buhari administration did in Osun where they froze the accounts of the Adeleke family and then illegally and clandestinely paid N16.7 billion to the Osun state government to facilitate daylight electoral robbery.

The Nigerian Constitution guarantees every Nigerian citizen freedom of movement and freedom of association. This Constitutional right cannot be taken away except by a court order. If the Buhari administration wants to curtail the rights of Nigerians, then they must go to court and obtain a court order.

Anything short of this is unconstitutional
and extrajudicial. This sudden dictatorial act brings to mind President Buhari’s comments for which he was condemned by the international community and by the generality of Nigerians.


While delivering an address at the annual general
conference of the Nigerian Bar Association on August 26, 2018, President Buhari has said “where national security and public interest are threatened or there is a likelihood of their being threatened, the individual rights of those allegedly responsible must take second place, in favour of the greater good of society.”

That was not only a faulty interpretation of the
constitution, the statement also betrays the dictatorial and authoritarian mindset of President Buhari because only he gets to decide who and what threatens national security.

It is a throwback to Buhari’s evil Decree Number Two of 1984 which criminalised truth telling if it did not please Buhari, proving that dictators can grow old, but they can’t grow into democrats. Under the Buhari administration, Nigeria has witnessed an unprecedented capital flight out of the nation to the extent that we are not even listed amongst the top ten recipients of Foreign Direct Investment in Africa in the latest ranking by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

It is salient to note that we were number one under the last Peoples Democratic Party administration. Funny enough, the Buhari administration were unable to stop Abdulrasheed Maina, their financier, from leaving the country after he was illegally brought back by them and reinstated to the federal service with double promotion.

It is precisely this type of draconian orders that have chased investors away from Nigeria and it is precisely why Nigerians will chase this recession friendly government away from power on February 16, 2019, so we can begin the job of Getting Nigeria Working Again.

A mum-of-two was filmed falling to her death from a 27th floor balcony as she tried to take a selfie, according to Metro UK.

The woman identified as 44-year-old Sandra Manuela Da Costa Macedo, lost her balance while leaning on a railing as she took a photo of herself.

Nearby construction workers filmed as she took photographs in fear that she would fall, moments before she tragically plunged from the building.

She was still holding a selfie stick as she fell, according to witnesses. Paramedics rushed to the Luxor Tower in a popular neighbourhood of Panama City called El Cangrejo just after 10am local time on Friday. Police sources told local media they think she was knocked off balance by a high gust of wind after spending several minutes taking photos.

According to reports Sandra only moved to Panama recently from the northern Portuguese town of Vila das Aves. She had taught in schools in the resort of Esposende near Braga in northern Portugal and the nearby historic city of Viana do Castelo. Erick Alzate, a witness who lives in the
block, confirmed her death had been a tragic accident.

He said: ‘I live here in the tower where she fell. She had been taking selfies for a couple of minutes and construction workers on a block opposite were shouting to her to be careful. ‘She decided to sit on the railing for the last selfie and that’s when she went over the edge.’ Well-wishers took to social media today to offer their
condolences to her family.

One said: ‘Rest in peace. Such a stupid way to die.’ Jose Guillermo added: ‘Peace for her soul and strength for her family.’

Meet Dr Zainab Gimba, the only woman who reportedly
won APC ticket in the whole of Borno State
Dr Hajiya Zainab Gimba, a former commissioner in Borno State,
has emerged victorious in the House of Representative’s primary
election of the APC.


The election was held on Thursday in the ElKanemi Warriors
Stadium, Maiduguri and she polled 76 votes to trounce her closest
rival, Nur Sherrif who got 50 votes.

Alhaji Abdulrazak scored five
votes while Baba Mala Kaigama and Sule Gambo scored zero
votes.


Alhaji Ahmed El-Marzuq, the chairman of the electoral committee
who presided over the exercise, did not announce the winner of
the election, noting that the election was inconclusive.


Reacting, Gimba, the leading contestant, said the election was
marred by irregularities, intimidation and disappointment, noting
that her life was under threat because she refused to withdraw for
a particular candidate.


She said that she and her supporters were beaten by policemen
who acted on orders from the government house.

“We started peacefully with four wards…suddenly we saw some
police officers sent from Government house to stop the election,"
she said.


“When the officer came, he told us that Governor Shettima said
they should come and stop the election. When our supporters
insisted that the election must hold they started beating all of us
and injuring some. In fact as I am talking to you, my leg is
swollen.


“I sent a message to the Borno Commissioner of Police and also
called him, but he told me that the officers sent were those from
the government house and were not acting under his order.


When I told him, he said there was nothing he could do. As you
can see my people are still here demanding for justice and
fairness. They are saying that they cannot allow their mandate to
be stolen by anybody.


“We therefore appeal to the APC National working committee and
President Muhammadu Buhari to defend democracy by ensuring that every aspirant gets justice. The APC must not fold its arms and watch aspirants’ rights violated. As you can see, they already announced that I am winning, but they are planning to rig the election in favour of my opponents”.
