The Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC, has reacted to a trending
story on social media concerning a purported
statement credited to the media aide of the Kano
State governor to the effect that the Commission
got a N10 Million donation from the state
government. EFCC says, 'the story is not falsehood, but a deliberate attempt to malign the efforts of the Commission in the fight against corruption. For the records, it is a tradition that the EFCC does not receive donations from state governors/ government or any individual at that'. The EFCC, as a reputable anti-graft agency is sponsored by federal government through budgetary allocation and in some cases, foreign organisations in terms of capacity building. It is true that the Commission, in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Crimes, ICPC and the Athletic Federation of Nigeria, AFN and other stakeholders is organizing the first National Anti- Corruption Marathon. Jacob Onu, the leader of the National Anti-Corruption Marathon had in the course of his visit to the Commission a fortnight ago told the Acting Chairman and his management about the marathon which he said is being planned in tandem with the International Anti- Corruption Day which usually comes up on December 9 every year. He said it was aimed at raising national consciousness on the scourge and danger of corruption to the country and the need for all and sundry to join hands to eradicate it. It is therefore very shocking to read of a purported donation of N10 million to the Commission. The story is not only unfounded but very mischievous. For the avoidance of doubt, no State governor or some other individual or group has donated any amount of money to the EFCC to carry out the Anti-corruption Marathon project or any other project for that matter. https://www.thecable.ng/we-didnt-receive-n10m-from-ganduje-says-efcc |
The British government has said it was neither backing the presidential candidates of the All Progressive Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari or that of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar. Speaking at a one-day dialogue programme tagged: ‘Enhancing electoral participation of PWDs in 2019 general elections’, Political Adviser to the country’s Deputy British High Commissioner, Mr Wale Adebajo, said the British government had no vested interest in either Buhari, Abubakar or any of the other candidates in the February 16 poll. This was just as international agencies in collaboration with local civil society organisations urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the full inclusion of Peoples Living with Disabilities(PWDs) to easily participate in the electoral system in 2019. The agencies, which included the British High Commission and Australian High Commission in Nigeria, British Department for International Development (DFID) and Foundation for Justice and Social Development (FOJSOD) said excluding people living with disabilities from the electoral system was not in consonance with global best practices. The DFID Regional Programme Officer, Mrs. Margaret Fagboyo, said the agency had always believed that PWDs should be beneficiary of the sustainable development in Nigeria, which unfettered access to participate in elections was part of. “In 2019, INEC must ensure that ballot boxes are placed where they can access easily, the police shouldn’t harass them, they should be accorded respect. They should be seen as critical stakeholders in any election. “We commend INEC for noticing where there are lapses and trying to improve on them. We can’t leave these people behind while taking critical decisions just because they are having one form of disability. If this happens, definitely, there will be problem.” Adebajo said the National Disability bill that is awaiting presidential assent will help in resolving some of the issues bedeviling the group in the country. Adebajo praised the INEC for including PWDs in its strategic plan for 2017-2021 elections, saying the British government and United States Department forInternational Development (USAID) were favourably disposed to the action. Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ekiti State, Prof. Abdulganiyu Raji, said INEC has identified those critical areas where PWDs were having problems in the electoral system. “The overall goal of this programme is to consolidate inclusive electoral process that would be in consonance with the international best practices devoid of any rancour or acrimony but free, fair, transparent and acceptable elections,” Raji said. https://www.reportnaija.ng/2018/11/27/2019-were-not-backing-buhari-atiku-says-british-govt/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep shock over the killing of military personnel in Metele village of Borno State by Boko Haram terrorists, assuring at the same time that immediate measures are being taken to ensure that the loopholes which led to the fatalities are blocked once and for all. Reacting to the tragic incident, the president said that his administration remains ever committed and focused on the security of military personnel and other citizens. According to Mr Buhari, “No responsible Commander-in-Chief would rest on his oars or fold his hands to allow terrorists to endanger the lives of its military personnel and other citizens. Our loyal forces have proved their strength over the terrorists and we are ready to give them all the needed support in terms of equipment and manpower to succeed in ending the renewed threat. In the coming days, I am engaging the Military and Intelligence Chiefs in extensive discussions on the next steps we shall be taking.” The President noted that fighting terrorism has taken a global dimension, which necessitates international collaboration among states facing similar security challenges. Mr Buhari reassured Nigerians of his continued commitment to their security and of his efforts to sustain the momentum in the previous significant successes recorded against the terrorists. He, however, advised Nigerians against making a political capital out of national tragedy, stressing that members of the armed forces are one family who are commonly committed to the security and safety of all Nigerians. https://www.tori.ng/news/111481/buhari-breaks-silence-on-boko-harams-massacre-of-n.html |
