The 14th Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, on Thursday, in Lagos, lamented the worsening insecurity in the country.

He said nothing seems to work again in the country, citing various social issues to buttress his view.

He said the level of poverty and hunger in the land is daily increasing and so also the level of insecurity, corruption, rate of inflation, youth unemployment, gender imbalance, poor electricity, poor foreign exchange rate, corruption and so forth.

He said the worst thing is that the level where Nigeria was in 2015 when people were crying foul about the state of the country’s socio-political economy, insecurity, inflation and so forth was far better than what the situation were at the moment.

Sanusi gave this remark at the 7th colloquium of Akinjide Adeosun Foundation (AFF) to mark the 54th birthday of the founder of the foundation and CEO of St. Rachael’s Pharmaceuticals Nigeria, Mr Akinjide Adeosun.

He was the guest of honour at the event, which also has Mr Jimi Agbaje, a pharmacist cum politician; the Secretary to the Oyo State Government and wife of the celebrator, Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun; as well as a keynote speaker, Prof Ayodele Olurotimi and the Managing Director of Megamound Investment Ltd, Mr Olumide Osunsina, among other dignitaries, in attendance.

Speaking further and on the theme of the programme, “Are leaders scarce in Nigeria,” Sanusi blamed Nigeria’s situation mostly on leaders in political governance, saying many of them lack a clear vision that can effectively move the country forward appreciably.

He said that was why rather than for things to get better after successive administration comes to the stage of governance things get worse.

According to him, we thought we were in a deep hole in 2015 but between 2015 and now; we have been digging ourselves into a deeper hole.

He said it was unheard of that Nigeria could not take the advantage of the Russian-Ukraine War to better its economy just as all other oil-producing countries globally do at the moment.

According to him, Nigeria is the only oil-producing country that is grieving at this time as every other oil-producing country is celebrating and smiling to the banks due to the price of oil that has gone up appreciably because of the Russian-Ukraine War.

He said it was more disturbing that the country’s revenue is not enough to service the debts let alone meet peoples’ needs.

Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima have
visited President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday.

Tinubu is the presidential candidate of the All Progressives

He visited Buhari alongside Shettima at the State House in
Abuja.

The duo were accompanied by the APC Chairman, Abdullahi
Adamu and Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong.

Adamu said the meeting was to brief the President and get his
approval on the party’s plans regarding the campaign outfit
and organogram.

20 Ghanaian fishermen have been sentenced to one-year imprisonment each for transporting 13.670 kilogrammes of marijuana, aka cannabis Sativa, from Ghana to Nigeria.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo on Thursday, August 4, convicted and sentenced them after finding them guilty of the charges of conspiracy and unlawful transportation of the drug during a hearing at the Federal High Court in Lagos State.

The convicted fishermen include Francis Teye, Kweke Komel, Gad Adjah, Theophilus Tetteh, Kwesi Aboagye, Ekon Fynn, Kwamena Baah, Kwabina Adjei, Micheal Okutu, Isaac Kofi, Kweku Moko, Kwezi Adzi and Kweku Mensah.

Others are Micheal Kofi, Ekon Bentum, Kwesi Amissah, Joshua Huago, Otu Otipeseku, Isaac Yorsson and Nana Kodwo.

The convicts were arrested with the drug conveyed from their country into the Nigerian territorial waters on January 14, 2022.

They were arraigned on two counts of conspiracy and unlawful transportation of the substance.

The prosecutor, Mr. Fingere Owen, told the court that the offences were contrary to and punishable under sections 11(b) and 14(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The defendants pleaded guilty to the charges.

Following their guilty pleas, the prosecutor reviewed the facts of the case.

Owen also tendered some exhibits and urged the court to convict and sentence them in accordance with the sections they were charged with.

However, lawyers for the convicts, Mr. Uche Okoronkwo, who led Calistus Onyewueke, both of Minerva Legal Practice, told the court that all the defendants were first time offenders without previous criminal records.

Okoronkwo told the court that his clients were fishermen, who were engaged by a purported customer, who did not tell them the content of the bag.

Justice Oweibo sentenced them to one-year imprisonment each.

The judge also ordered that the sentence should commence from the date of their arrest.

He, however, ordered the convicts to pay the sum of N50,000 each in lieu of the sentence and ordered that the boat used in smuggling the banned substance be forfeited to the Federal Government.

The Defence Headquarters has said that troops have eliminated 30 of the terrorists that attacked troops of the 7
guards battalion in the Bwari area of the federal capital
territory (FCT).

Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Bernard Onyeuko disclosed this at the Bi-Weekly news conference on military operations in Abuja on Thursday July 28.

Onyeuko said the operation was conducted by troops of 7
Guards Battalion and 167 Special Forces Battalion in
conjunction with the air component of “Operation Whirl Punch” between Sunday and Tuesday.

Troops successfully cleared Kawu and Ido villages, neutralising the terrorists and destroying their enclave and
hideout.

The ground troops also recovered six motorcycles, two AK47 rifles, and one fully loaded LMG magazine amongst others during mop-up.


Onyeuko said;

“The hierarchy of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies wishes to re-assured Nigerians of its
commitment and pact with all Nigerians.

“With the recent operations carried out from July 23, we wish to assure residents of FCT in particular that we are undaunted and unrelenting in our efforts to ensure the safety of lives and properties.

“People should go about their normal business as their safety is guaranteed.

“The support and cooperation of all Nigerians is hereby
solicited as security is everybody’s business.

“Citizens are encouraged to report unusual persons in your community to security agencies. If you see something, say something.’

Former Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris has
been granted bail by an Abuja High Court sitting at Maitama
on Thursday July 28.

Idris Ahmed and his co-defendants were granted bail upon
terms and condition given by the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission.

Delivering ruling, Justice Adeyemi Ajayi ordered that the
defendants shall not leave the Federal Capital Territory, and
should they want to, they would have to seek clearance from
the court or have their bail revoked.

The defendants will also sign an undertaking that they will
abide by the bail conditions by the EFCC.

The defendants should not have and shall not procure
alternate passports until the case is done with, having
deposited their original passports to the commission.
Ajayi added;

“In line with the due process and supremacy of the law,
the defendants are still entitled to bail, irrespective of the
enormity of the allegations against them.

“The EFCC did not in any of its processes, stated that the
defendants misbehaved while on administrative bail."
Trial commenced immediately after the ruling on bail
application.

This is coming barely a week after the court remanded the
former AGF in prison. The court had last week Friday ordered
that Idris and his co-defendants be kept in Kuje Correctional
facility pending the hearing of their bail applications.

Other defendants are Godfrey Olusegun Akindele, Mohammed
Kudu Usman and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange
Ltd.

The defendants are being prosecuted on a 14-count charge of
stealing and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N109,
485,572,691.9.

Former Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, on Tuesday, July 26, underwent a back surgery.

Recall that the ex-governor said he was attacked during the 2018 Ekiti state governorship election. He attended one of the
rallies with a neck collar and wept saying he was in severe pains.

His brother, Isaac, who shared video and photos from his hospital bed, said the former governor has undergone two major surgical operations within five months, one for his neck which happened in February and another one for his back.

According to him, the neck and back problem resulted from the attack on the former governor during the 2018 Ekiti governorship election.

Thirteen scrap-metal collectors in Borno state have been killed
by a bomb they excavated.

Babakura Kolo, a leader in a local anti-jihadist militia said
sixteen metal scavengers from a displaced persons’ camp in
Bama found the bomb while digging for scrap on Monday
July 25, in the bush on the outskirts of town.
He said;

“The bomb exploded as they were pushing it in a cart
toward the town, killing 13 and seriously injuring three.”
Channels Television reported that Kolo said the ordnance had
apparently been dropped in 2015, when the military bombed
jihadist positions during operations to retake Bama from Boko
Haram.

A second militia leader, Bukar Grema, who gave the same toll
said;

“It was dormant for seven years and buried in the sand but
they managed to dig it out, not knowing it was a bomb.”

A woman just discovered that she will welcome a baby in less than two weeks, despite not knowing she was pregnant.

The expectant mother took to Twitter to reveal that she went to the hospital for an abortion in January 2022 when she found out she was pregnant.

Since then, she said she's been getting her period every
month but recently felt something kicking in her body, which she assumed was gas.

She went to the doctor on July 23, 2022, and was told that
she's 8 months pregnant and her due date is August 7, less
than two weeks away.

When asked if it's possible she was carrying twins and only
one was aborted, she said it's just one baby and he survived
the termination attempt.
