The Nigerian government has disclosed that no Minister or Senator receives over N1,000,000 Naira as monthly salary.

The Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, Mr Mohammed Bello, made this disclosure in a Channelstv interview on Friday.

He said, in sharp contrast to some people’s perception, Nigerian lawmakers and ministers don’t have jumbo salaries.

He said, “Contrary to what many people perceive or believe that Legislators or Senators have jumbo salaries, no. There is no Senator or Minister that earns over a million Naira as salary from the federal government”.

He also expressed dissatisfaction over the pay of Nigeria’s non-career ambassador.

He revealed that a non-career ambassador receives the same salary as a deputy director at the federal ministry of Foreign affairs.

It was learnt that since 2007-2008 the federal government has not reviewed the salary structure of political office holders.

On Friday, November 4, an Abuja Federal High Court issued an interim forfeiture of 40 landed properties belonging to the former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu who is being held in the UK.

10 of Ekweremadu’s properties in Enugu, three in the United States of America (USA), two in the United Kingdom (UK), one in Lagos, nine in Dubai, and 15 located in the Federal Capital Territory are affected by the interim forfeiture order.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, the trial Judge, gave the order following an ex-parte motion filed and moved by Ibrahim Buba on behalf of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Ruling on the motion, the Judge ordered EFCC to publish the interim forfeiture order of the properties in a national daily within seven days from the date the order was given.

Ekweremadu and his wife are currently standing trial in the United Kingdom over allegations of organ harvesting.

Justice Ekwo, has, however, adjourned the matter till December 5, 2022, for a report on the objection from any member of the public regarding the properties.

President Muhamadu Buhari has sacked Effiong Akwa, the sole administrator of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

In a statement on Thursday by Patricia Deworitshe, director of press, ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, the president also announced the constitution of a new management team and governing board of the NDDC.

In December 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari removed
Kemebradikumo Pondei as acting managing director of the NDDC — appointing Akwa as the head of the agency.

According to the statement, the names of the new management team and governing board will be transmitted to the national assembly for approval.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the disengagement of the Interim Administrator of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr Effiong Okon Akwa, from his post with effect from today, 20 October 2022,” the statement reads.

“Mr Akwa was appointed interim administrator of the Commission for the duration of the Forensic Audit into the operations of the NDDC, which has now been concluded.

“President Buhari has also approved the constitution of a new Management Team and Governing Board of the NDDC in line with section 5(2) of the NDDC Act, 2000.

The names of the nominees for the new management team and Governing Board are to be transmitted to the National Assembly for approval.”

A British man who lost his iPhone in the UK has discovered it in Nigeria.

The man explained that the phone went missing a month ago when he was in town and he finally got access to his iCloud this October.

When he searched for his phone's current location, he discovered it is in Edo state, Nigeria.

The court of appeal sitting in Abuja has ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its strike.

At the court session on Friday, the appellate court said ASUU should obey the order of an industrial court which directed the suspension of the strike before seeking to appeal the judgment.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 to press home the demand for improved funding for universities, and a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.

After several meetings to resolve the strike ended inconclusively, the federal government proceeded to the national industrial court to challenge the action.

The industrial court, in a ruling delivered on September 21, granted the federal government’s application for an interlocutory injunction to restrain ASUU from continuing with the strike pending the determination of the substantive suit.

Not satisfied with the ruling, ASUU approached the court ofappeal seeking leave to challenge the lower court’s decision.

The court of appeal on Wednesday had asked the parties to explore the option of an out-of-court settlement.

However, at the court session on Thursday, both parties agreed to proceed with the hearing after failing to reach a settlement.

Delivering a ruling at the resumed court session on Friday, a three-member panel of the appellate court granted the union “conditional leave” to appeal the industrial court’s decision.

The panel led by Hamman Barka said for ASUU to file its notice of appeal within seven days, it must show evidence that its members have resumed work immediately.

The panel held that failure to adhere to the order will make the appeal incompetent before the court of appeal.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has said that meningitis can be transmitted through coughing, sneezing and kissing.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, a thin layer of the connective tissue that covers the brain and the spinal cord.

The PUNCH reports that Nigeria has recorded 961 suspected cases and 56 deaths of meningitis in 32 states including the Federal Capital Territory across 159 Local Government Areas so far in 2022.

The World Meningitis Day is celebrated every October 5 to raise awareness of the disease.

The NCDC said meningitis is an epidemic-prone disease with cases reported all year round in Nigeria. The highest burden occurs in the “Meningitis Belt” of Africa south of the Sahara Desert. In Nigeria, the belt includes all 19 northern states, the Federal Capital Territory, and some southern states.

The NCDC, on its Facebook page said, “Meningitis is mostly spread from person to person through respiratory droplets e.g. coughing, sneezing & close contact such as kissing.

“Meningitis can affect anyone at any age. Seek medical attention if you experience symptoms.

“Let’s take action to #DefeatMeningitis.”

According to the centre, the most common signs and symptoms of meningitis are fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, photophobia (pain on looking at bright lights), neck stiffness, and altered consciousness levels.

“In younger children, it may be more difficult to observe these signs, and irritability, poor feeding, and inactivity are common.

“Meningitis can also cause meningococcal septicemia, presenting with fatigue, severe myalgia (muscle pain), vomiting, cold extremities, rapid breathing, low blood pressure, and a purpuric (dark purple non-blanching) rash,” it added.

The remaining 23 passengers abducted from a Kaduna-bound train on March 28, 2022, were released by the terrorists on Wednesday October 5.
