Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Plateau state governor, Simon Lalong, disclosed this to journalists after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Thursday. Governors of states in the Northern part of Nigeria have rejected the total disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Plateau state governor, Simon Lalong, disclosed this to journalists after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Thursday. Lalong said the defunct police unit had been useful in the fight against insecurity in the region. According to him, SARS was not made up of bad elements alone as it also included personnel doing their work diligently. He said what was needed was the reformation of the unit to enable it to discharge its functions optimally. Lalong, however, acknowledged that there were divisions in the country concerning the continued existence of the unit. http://saharareporters.com/2020/10/15/breaking-northern-governors-meet-president-buhari-reject-disbandment-sars

Apple has unveiled a new iPhone 12 with an incredible 5G speed. According to Apple, the new phone features the same 6.1-inch display size as the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR before it, the latest “main” iPhone — and likely the model most people will gravitate toward — is making the transition from an LCD screen to OLED. And as rumored, the phone has flat sides for an overall look that more closely matches the iPad Pro and iPad Air (plus the iPhone 4 from years ago). The iPhone 12 will come in black, white, blue, red, and green. Aside from the flat sides, it still largely resembles the iPhone 11. There’s still a notch at the top that houses Apple’s Face ID technology, though the bezels around the screen have been reduced — another perk of the OLED switch. Around back, the iPhone 12 has two cameras housed in a matte glass squircle, which makes for a nice contrast with the rest of the glossy back panel. The iPhone 12 represents Apple’s first major foray into 5G cellular technologies. https://www.apple.com/ng/newsroom/2020/10/apple-introduces-iphone-12-pro-and-iphone-12-pro-max-with-5g/

In its October World Economic Outlook report released in Washington on Tuesday, the IMF projected that Nigeria’s economy will contract by 4.3 percent in 2020. This is a 1.1 percent improvement from the 5.4 percent that was projected in June and deeper than the 3.4 percent projected in April. Gita Gopinath, IMF chief economist and director of the research department, said oil-exporting countries are battling the health and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of low oil prices. “They have been hit by the health crisis and they have been hit because they are oil exporters which had a collapse and more importantly, they just don’t have the resources that advanced economies have to deal with this crisis,” Gopinath said. “Because we don’t have a financial crisis at this point, many emerging markets are able to borrow at record levels in foreign currency this year relative to previous years.” The IMF chief economist said the foreign debts been acquired by emerging market economies will not be enough and advised that there is a need for continued international support. This support, Gopinath explained, could be in terms of concessionary financing, aid and debt relief and restructuring. “There are going to be developing and low- income economies that would need debt relief and, in some cases, restructuring of debt to make sure they have the space to do the spending that they need,” she said. This contraction will be the worst recession in 30 years, and the second recession in five years, following closely after a negative economic growth of 1.51% in 2016. In 1987, Nigeria’s economy receded by -10.87 and -0.6 in 1991. https://thecable.ng/breaking-nigerias-recession-will-not-be-as-bad-as-earlier-projected-says-imf |

In what will come across as a rather startling development, one Kabir Muhammed Lawal, who happens to be the Legislative Assistant to a member of the House of Representatives, Mustafa Saidu from Adamawa State, has been caught burgling an office. The man was on Friday, caught breaking into the office of another lawmaker from Kano State, Kabiru Idris, The PUNCH reports. Lawal, who was apprehended with the aid of a closed-circuit television camera, hails from Offa, Kwara State. Saidu is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party while Idris is a member of the All Progressives Congress. Our correspondent obtained a copy of the CCTV footage showing Lawal allegedly opening a shelf in the office as well as videos of his interrogation by Idris and some sergeants-at- arms. According to eyewitnesses, Lawal had allegedly paraded himself as a journalist in the course of extorting money from unsuspecting politicians and visitors from Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies. Authorities of the National Assembly were still interrogating Lawal as of 6.18pm on Friday when this report was filed. Idris, who is Chairman of the House Committee on Civil Society Organisations and Donor Agencies, in his brief comment on the incident, stated that Lawal allegedly broke into his office after using several keys, within 15 minutes of exiting the office. The lawmaker said, “He put off the light in my office but my cameras were on and I could see him. He used different keys. I could see from the camera; he was struggling to open the door and it was less than 15 minutes after I closed from the office. Basically, he was monitoring my movements. We have all the videos.” Idris said he had contacted Lawal’s boss, who was expected to arrive in the National Assembly to see what his aide had allegedly done. “It will be unfair to take any action or allow anybody to take any action without the consent of his principal. I have already invited him and he is on his way. We will tell him what happened. “The Chairman of the Press (House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Benjamin Kalu) is with us; his office was also burgled a while ago. We have all been burgled; we don’t know what is happening.” Idris later told journalists that the case had been handed over to the National Assembly management for further action. Burglars had in May broken into Kalu’s office and carted away cash and items. Kalu had lamented the spate of insecurity in and around the National Assembly Complex as burglars broke into his office. The House spokesman said members of the National Assembly were no longer safe to carry out their legislative duties and that he was shocked to see that his office had been burgled. When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer, National Assembly Division, DSP Abdullahi Sambo, said, “See me on Monday for that.” Lawal’s boss could not be reached as of press time on Friday as he did not pick up his mobile phone when he was called several times. In January 2019, the offices of three members of the National Assembly were looted within a week. The affected lawmakers included Senator Oluremi Tinubu, representing Lagos West Senatorial District; and Mr Muhammed Gausu Boyi, representing Ringim/Taura Federal Constituency, Jigawa State. https://punchng.com/reps-aide-caught-burgling-another-lawmakers-office/

The Ministry of Science and Technology has been accused of “giving out two vehicles worth N17m to pay N2m debt it owed contractors." This bizzare settlement was uncovered by the Senate Committee on Public Accounts after the Auditor-General of the Federation, Anthony Ayine queried the ministry over the disappearance of two official vehicles with registration M50-10FG and MGO-12FG in a report submitted to the Senate. Ayine revealed that during the verification of non-recurrent assets of the ministry, it was discovered that the two vehicles were not seen and their whereabouts was not explained. However when grilled by the senate committee, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Edet Akpan said the vehicles were seized by a court as result of debt the ministry owed contractors. Chairman of the committee, Senator Matthew Urhoghide however rejected Akpan’s explanation and further stated that there's no evidence that the vehicles were given to the contractors through court order. https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2020/10/ministry-of-science-settled-n2m-debt-with-n17m-vehicles-senate.html

former governor of Jigawa State, Dr Sule Lamido, has said that he cannot advise president Muhammad Buhari on ways to make his government better for Nigerians. Lamido was speaking to BBC Hausa on the sidelines of Nigeria’s 60th Independence anniversary, the country which he said has recorded number of success despite many setbacks. Sule Lamido tackles Atiku over claim on PDP President Buhari to present 2021 budget on Thursday “You can’t say in the past 60 years of our independence that there is no progress, there is. “But, honestly, our leaders are not taking advantage of the natural resources we have in the country to make us progress and live better,” he said. The former governor said he cannot pray or advise someone who called him a thief and chased him out of power. He added that it is left for Nigerians to weight this administration and see the difference so as to let All Progressives Congress, APC, continue or vote them out. “I am from an opposition party, no matter how much I love Buhari or his cabinet, I can’t enter mosque and pray for him. “People called us [PDP] thieves and voted APC. “So, it is left for them to judge now. “If Buhari is doing good, they know and let him lead Nigeria forever, but if he is doing wrong, we are always there to come and takeover in order to do the right thing.” https://dailytrust.com/why-i-cant-enter-mosque-to-pray-for-buhari-sule-lamido |

Sanusi, a former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was speaking at The Platform, an annual conference organised by Covenant Christian Centre in Lagos, on Thursday. The virtual event hosted by Poju Oyemade, its convener, was to commemorate the nation’s 60th independence anniversary. Nigeria has witnessed series of ethnoreligious crisis which has resulted in several ethnic groups calling for a referendum. When asked about ways to solve the crisis and restore peace, Sanusi said Nigerians must recognize that irrespective of political office, every citizen must be good representatives of their beliefs, religion and ethnic groups. He said those who claim to represent the interest of southerners and northerners due to the political positions they occupy are more concerned about their pockets than happenings in the various areas they represent. “Ethno-religious crisis is not so much from Nigerians but the Nigerian elites. We have identities in Nigeria but the construction of opposing identities, the political process, is basically the Nigerian elite competing among itself for a share of the national cake,” he said. “I don’t think that the people who say they are fighting for Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba are really interested. I mean when they get there at the end of the day, it is about them and their families. “There is nobody out there that is really representing north or south or east. They claim to be if you look out there in the cabinet. In the history of Nigeria, there has never been a government that does not have people from every part of the country. “So the first thing to recognize is that we must get away from the sense that holding political office is what makes you representative of a people.” Sanusi also commended the federal government for its decision to remove fuel subsidy. He added that the reforms being adopted by the government will yield positive results. https://thecable.ng/sanusi-no-one-really-representing-north-south-or-east-everyone-is-fighting-for-themselves |
President Muhammadu Buhari will address the nation live on Thursday, as part of activities to mark the 60th independence anniversary celebration. In a statement on Wednesday, Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, said the address will hold at the Eagle’s Square, Abuja. “As part of activities commemorating the 60th Independence anniversary of the country, President Muhammadu Buhari will address the nation from the Eagle Square, Abuja, on Thursday, October 1, 2020,” he said. “The live address will commence after the Anniversary Parade beginning at 10am which will be covered by major television and radio stations especially the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN). “Please note that in view of the open-air live address, the traditional early morning October 1 Presidential Broadcast will not feature on Thursday.” While Buhari has presented previous Independence Day speeches via televised broadcasts, this will be the first time since becoming president in 2015 that he’ll address the nation on October 1 outside closed doors. https://www.thecable.ng/buhari-to-give-independence-day-address-live-from-eagle-square |
Nigeria is 60! Although the north and south were amalgamated in 1914, the colonial masters did not hand over the running of the country to Nigerians until October 1, 1960. Since then, Nigerians have been marking Independence Day yearly. This year’s celebration is special — it is the 60th year; it is the Diamond Jubilee. Nigeria has had 15 chief executives in the form of prime minister, head of state, president and head of interim national government. Who among them, in your opinion, deserves to be called the ‘best president’ Nigeria has ever had? Let us help you with a few facts on them (but do your own research too!) Nnamdi Azikiwe (1960-1966). He was first governor-general and then president. Both roles lacked executive powers in the parliamentary system. Zik was regarded as Nigeria’s foremost nationalist, but was accused of having a foreknowledge of the 1966 failed coup. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa (1960 to 1966). He was instrumental in the formation of the African Union and was very vocal on the international scene. His government was accused of rigging local elections and using federal power to tame opponents. JTU Aguiyi-Ironsi (January-July 1966). First military head of state. He brought the Nigerian federation into a unitary system, like the military command hierarchy. His government was born in crisis after the failed coup and lasted only six months. Yakubu Gowon (1966 to 1975). He created 12 states but retained the military-command structure. He enjoyed the first oil boom and built infrastructure but also had to fight a civil war from 1967 to 1970. He was accused of mismanaging the oil boom. Murtala Muhammed (1975 to 1976). He focused on fighting corruption. He also took the decision to move the federal capital to Abuja. Muhammed supported liberation movements in Africa. He was accused of destroying the civil service in his attempt to restructure it. Olusegun Obasanjo (1976 to 1979). He built major infrastructure, including roads, ports and refineries, and oversaw transition to civil rule. He also preached a return to agriculture and less dependence on oil revenue. He was accused of human rights violations. Shehu Shagari (1979 to 1983). He built housing estates, launched Green Revolution to support agriculture and conceived the Ajaokuta Steel Company. His government was accused of economic mismanagement and corruption and was overthrown by the military. Muhammadu Buhari (1983-1985). He waged a war against corruption and indiscipline, jailed politicians and enforced strict military rule. He was accused of failing to address the economic problems he inherited, as well as violating human rights and stifling press freedom. Ibrahim Babangida (1985 to 1993). He embarked on major political and economic reforms that formed the basis of present-day Nigeria: privatisation, diversification and electoral system. He was accused of encouraging corruption and violating human rights. He annulled June 12 poll. Ernest Shonekan was the head of the interim national government (ING) from August-November 1993. He did not spend up to 100 days in office before he was overthrown. His government was generally seen as lacking legitimacy and weak. There was no notable achievement. Sani Abacha (1993-1998). He set up the PTF that saw to major infrastructural development across the country. He finalised the NLG project from which Nigeria now earns billions of dollars yearly. He was accused of massive corruption (“Abacha Loot”) and state terrorism. Abdulsalami Abubakar (1998 to 1999). His government was shortlived but he organised a transition to civil rule and released those detained or jailed by Abacha for political reasons. Some members of his government were accused of corruption. Olusegun Obasanjo (1999 to 2007). He launched GSM service, reformed telecoms, pensions and banking, privatised public entities, paid off Nigeria’s foreign debts and left healthy savings. But his government was accused of corruption and political witch-hunt. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua (2007 to 2010). He added to the country’s savings, exposed “unspent” budget funds scam, granted amnesty to Niger Delta militants, and preached rule of law. He was accused of reversing Obasanjo’s policies and slowing down the country’s progress. Goodluck Jonathan (2010 to 2015). He started/ completed projects in roads, aviation, railways and power, did almajiri and girl-child education initiatives, and reformed the justice system. His government was accused of corruption and failing to tackle insecurity. Muhammadu Buhari (2015 till date). He has completed or initiated major projects in roads, railways, aviation and power, as well as agriculture and extractive sectors. He has been accused of nepotism, selective anti-graft war and inability to tackle economic and security problems. The Chief Executive Officer of Telecomm Satellite TV (TStv), Bright Echefu has promised Nigerians change as his organisation put things in place to become the first to implement the pay-per-view model in Nigeria. This was disclosed by the Chief Executive Officer while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday. Echefu said TStv has over 100 channels that will be made available for as low as N2 per day and as high as N5 for a channel. “We are going to be the first to implement pay- per-view. What TSTV has done is, allow you to create your own bouquet and you have channels that are as low as N2 per day,” he said. “If you have a N50 voucher, you are actually watching TV and saving your money.” According to Echefu, no other organisation has as much high definition (HD) channels as they do. “Nobody has as much HD channels as we do. We are rolling out with about 108 channels. We are going to be the first in sub-Saharan Africa to implement H.265,” the CEO said. “TStv has invested a lot in acquiring rights. Most channels are as low as N5 per day. As a gift to Nigerians, we are releasing one of our sports channels free for a year.” He said La Liga would be free but viewers would have to pay to view other football leagues, adding that about 18 states would be activated once they roll out their services on October 1. Recall that the company had initially launched on November 1, 2017 but encountered challenges and could not provide services to customers. It is now set for a relaunch in Oct. 1. The federal government says it has developed a test kit — SARS-COV-2 Isothermal Molecular Assay (SIMA) — that enables rapid testing of COVID-19 within 40 minutes. Olorunnimbe Mamora, the minister of state for health, who stated this on Tuesday at the presidential task force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing, said the kit was developed by the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR). Mamora said the test kit produces results faster than the Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR), which is currently the sole source of testing in the country; the PCR test takes several hours to produce results. “It is the SARS-COV-2 Isothermal Molecular Assay (SIMA) which can be performed by low skilled personnel with minimum training. This test which is ten times cheaper than the PCR can be deployed for point-of-care detection and surveillance,” he said. Speaking on the need to improve the country’s health sector in the event of future outbreaks, Mamora said there are plans to ensure that all states have at least one infectious disease centre. “Our goal is to have at least one standard infectious disease centre in every state. We shall therefore work with states to establish purpose- built treatment centres that will ensure we are better prepared for infectious disease outbreaks in the country,” he said. The minister appealed to governors to speed up testing in their respective states, adding that it is only through testing and isolation that the curve of the coronavirus can be flattened. “I shall again renew my appeal to state governments to continue to ensure that we step up case findings, sample collection and testing. It is only by testing that we can identify those with the infection for isolation and treatment,” Mamora said. As of September 28, over 500,000 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in Nigeria, with close to 60,000 persons confirmed to have contracted the virus; however, close to 50,000 patients have recovered. https://thecable.ng/fg-weve-developed-covid-19-test-kit-that-produces-result-within-40-minutes |
