The Islamic Movement in Nigeria has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to investigate the alleged setting on fire of a police operational vehicle on Saturday in Kaduna. The group in a petition written to the IGP and signed by President of the Movement’s Media Forum, Ibrahim Musa, called on Adamu to set up an investigative panel with a view to unravelling circumstances leading to the setting on fire of a Kaduna police command vehicle. IMN accused the police in Kaduna of attacking a group of its members without provocation and was seen setting their vehicle on fire. The group also claimed scores escaped with varying degrees of injuries from police bullets with several cars belonging to the mourners vandalised and houses torched by policemen. Musa said, “Policemen were caught on camera setting their own operational vehicle ablaze shortly after they opened fire on the Ashura mourners, killing three people and wounding dozens of others. Many other vehicles belonging to members of the Islamic Movement were also vandalized by the rampaging policemen, who also set houses ablaze and made a number of arrests.” “It was not immediately clear why policemen would deliberately set their own vehicle on fire but it might not be unconnected with their attempts at framing up members of the Islamic Movement, who were solemnly mourning the brutal murder of the grandson of Prophet Muhammad as is done in many parts of the Islamic world each year during this period.” Policemen Burnt Their Vehicle To Frame Us - Islamic Movement In Nigeria @PoliceNG @NigeriaGov @GovKaduna #Shiites #IMN pic.twitter.com/wZ9JzpOMLt — Sahara Reporters (@SaharaReporters) August 26, 2020 http://saharareporters.com/2020/08/26/policemen-burnt-their-vehicle-frame-us-islamic-movement-nigeria-says-calls-probe

German carmaker Audi has apologised for an ‘insensitive’ advert showing a little girl leaning on the front of a high-performance car while she eats a banana. https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2020/aug/05/Audi.JPG The advert, promoting the Audi RS 4 Avant, was posted on the company’s official Twitter account and attracted criticism from some social media users who described it as “sexually suggestive”, “strange” and “creepy”. Critics also suggested the advert glorifies “dangerous driving” and shows a child at risk of being run over. Audi said the advert was a “mistake”, tweeting that such mistake would not be made in future. Their Twitter Statement Read; “We hear you and let’s get this straight: We care for children. The Audi RS 4 is a family car with more than thirty driver assistance systems including an emergency break system. That’s why we showcased it with various family members for the campaign. We hoped we could convey these messages, showing that even for the weakest traffic participants it is possible to relaxingly lean on the RS technology. That was a mistake! Audi never intended to hurt anyone’s feelings. We sincerely apologize for this insensitive image and ensure that it will not be used in future. We will also immediately examine internally, how this campaign has been created and if control mechanisms failed in this case. “ However, other social media users said they could not see what was “offensive” or “provocative” about the advert. See More Reactions Below; @Holly__Storm: Right, so for all the banally, but thankfully morally minded people saying “you need yer head lookin at” if anyone sees this as wrong etc, there’s something called cultural conditioning. You see it with things which seems mildly offensive or inappropriate, but are overlooked a @FoxxysTweets: The problem is not with the advert or a girl eating a banana, its the friggin sickos who see a young girl eating a banana and their minds go to sex. @DipBrig11: Apologised? How the hell us this ‘sensitive? It’s a child eating a banana. What sickos see anything else?? @Calvinroche1: I’m offended by this…how dare people not be offended by this content…utterly disgraceful…Audi should be liquidated for this behaviour https://mobile.twitter.com/AudiOfficial/status/1290242181148618752?p=v |
Some members of the Abubakar Shekau-led faction of Boko Haram in Niger state have been spotted in a viral video observing the Eid Al-Adha prayer in an undisclosed bushy area. https://alexis.lindaikejisblog.com/photos/shares/5f2ac7ab186ca.jpg Though when the video was made is still unclear, the Eid Al-Adha was however celebrated by Muslim faithful across the globe on July 31. In the viral video, three of the supposed insurgents sent Eid greetings in Hausa, English, and Fulfulde. One the men was heard saying; “It is we the Jamahatu Ali Sunna li Dawatul Jihad in the location of Niger State. We want to send our Sallah salutation, first of all to our imam, Abu Muhammad Ibn Muhammad Abubakar Shekau." Bulama Bukarti, an analyst and human rights lawyer who shared the video on Twitter, expressed concern that the insurgents may have killed some military officers and taken possession of their uniforms. He tweeted; The Shekau-led faction of BH has released its first video exclusively featuring members claiming to be from Niger State. It shows about one hundred persons praying Eid in the heart of a bush before showing three fighters sending Eid greetings in Hausa, English and Fulfulde. It’s interesting that two of the fighters were respectively wearing Nigerian military & police uniforms. This indicates that they might’ve recently killed security forces and got their uniforms. This is because in their past video, the only speaker from Niger was in mufti. This video, if genuine, is further evidence that BH has expanded to the northcentral. The dense forest there is a perfect haven for terrorists and if the group is able to consolidate its presence in Niger, it can easily target Abuja as well as to other states like Kwara and Kogi. I won’t get tired of urging the FG and the Niger State Govt to take this threat seriously. We shouldn’t wait until the situation gets out of control before we start running helter-skelter. We better nip this challenge from the bud before it grows too gigantic to be uprooted. https://mobile.twitter.com/bulamabukarti/status/1290920787013238784?p=v https://alexis.lindaikejisblog.com/photos/shares/5f2ac7686ee91.png https://alexis.lindaikejisblog.com/photos/shares/5f2ac786b395e.png |

The Federal Government has said that SS3 students may have to sit for the General Certificate Examinations (GCE) in November if there is no shift in the timetable of the West African Examination Council (WAEC). The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, said this during the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing on Thursday, July 23, in Abuja. He said if Nigeria cannot convince WAEC to shift its examinations, sitting for the GCE may become the only option for Nigerian students. He added that if Nigeria is able to meet up with the WAEC timetable, there is already a negotiated timeline to move local language subjects such as Ibo, Hausa and Yoruba behind to allow all participating countries the needed time to write the general subjects at the same time. Nwajiuba also said the ministry will be meeting with relevant stakeholders on July 30 to assess preparations towards safe reopening of schools. The Minister said: "The Ghanaians will take examinations peculiar to them. But they are all in the first part of the time table so we will work out a domestication module that will take our peculiar subjects behind after we have done generals. "This will buy us the time we need for all of us to be at par with the rest of West Africa and operating at the same time because the unanimity with which WAEC has always worked is still very important to us. "Nigeria is not moving away from it, the option would have been to go to November to take the GCE external exams. Nigeria is carefully studying that if in the event everything fails, we may go to that way." https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/404725-nigeria-considering-gce-as-replacement-for-2020-wassce-minister.html |

At least five humanitarian workers abducted in Borno state have been executed by suspected Boko Haram insurgents. The humanitarian workers were traveling from Maiduguri to Monguno, a town in the northern part of Borno, when they were ambushed by Boko Haram on June 29, 2020. In a 34 seconds video, one of the insurgents who spoke in Hausa, said the humanitarian workers were executed for “working with the infidels”. “This is a strong message to those who are being used by unbelievers to convert people to infidels… those who are working for the organisations of disbelievers,” one of the Boko Haram fighters said. “You work for them to achieve their goals but they do not care about you that is the reason when we abducted you, they showed no care. We are calling on you to repent and turn to God. “For those of you remaining, we will surely get you… we know the routes you follow. If you do not desist, you’ll end just like these people too.” After speaking, five of the insurgents opened fire on the captives from a close range. It is unclear when the victims were killed but the video was released on Wednesday. Boko Haram has continued to wreak havoc in the north-east despite the claim of the government that the sect has been defeated. On Tuesday, the senate had asked the service chiefs to step down because of widespread insecurity in the country. https://www.thecable.ng/boko-haram-kills-humanitarian-workers-abducted-in-borno |
President Muhammadu Buhari will on Thursday depart for Bamako, Republic of Mali, on a one-day visit. This will be the president’s first trip out of the country after Nigeria recorded its first COVID-19 case on February 27. The president’s last known trip abroad was on February 7 when he travelled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the 33rd ordinary session of heads of state and government of the African Union. In a statement on Wedenesday, Femi Adesina, special adviser to the president on media and publicity, said the trip to Mali follows the briefing of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, special envoy of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to Mali. Jonathan was appointed by the ECOWAS to lead its mediation team to help resolve the socio-political tension Mali. Jonathan had visited Buhari on Tuesday and had filled in the president on his activities as special envoy to restore amity to Mali. “The Nigerian President and some ECOWAS leaders led by the chairman of the authority of heads of state and government of the sub-regional organisation, President Issoufou Mahamadou of Niger Republic, agreed to meet in Mali to engage in further consultations towards finding a political solution to the crisis in the country,” the statement said. “Host President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Presidents Machy Sall of Senegal, Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana and Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire are expected to participate in the Bamako meeting. “Jonathan was at the statehouse in company of Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, president of ECOWAS commission, on Tuesday to brief Buhari on the unfolding situation in Mali, necessitating the visit of ECOWAS leaders to consolidate on the agreements reached by various parties.” There is currently an uprising against President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita of Mali, who has spent two out of the five years second term in office. A resistance group, M5, is insisting that the constitutional court must be dissolved, and the president resign, before peace can return to the country. The crisis had erupted after the court nullified results of 31 parliamentary seats in the polls held recently, awarding victory to some other contenders, which the resistance group said was at the instigation of Keita. On July 10, riots led to the killing of some protesters by security agents, hence the intervention of ECOWAS. https://www.thecable.ng/mali-political-crisis-buhari-to-make-first-overseas-trip-in-5-months |
There was a drama between Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, and James Faleke when the minister appeared before a house of representatives ad hoc committee on Tuesday. Faleke, who is representing Ikeja federal constituency, is a member of the ad hoc committee investigating the suspension of the management of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF). Ngige, before answering questions, had started by saying that members of the committee were hisyounger brothers, except Faleke whom he said might be up to 60. Faleke interrupted the minister, saying he was well over 60, but the minister said the lawmaker was a “small boy” and that he is of the same age bracket with Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who is seen as Faleke’s political benefactor. “So you are near my age, at least I am seven years older than you. I’m the same age with your mentor in Lagos, Asiwaju,”the minister said. “And I was governor with him at the same time. He was a senator, I was a senator. I am a two time minister, he isn’t a two time minister.”Again, Faleke interrupted saying Tinubu “won all his elections very well.” The remark appeared to be a mockery of Nigige whose election as governor of Anambra state was nullified in 2006. Responding again, Nigige said; “no problem about that, just like you won your own in Kogi state very well. And you are now the deputy governor and governor of Kogi state.”Faleke, who was running mate to Abubakar Audu, in the 2015 Kogi governorship election was denied the governorship ticket when Audu suddenly died as the election was almost completed. When Faleke asked the minister to respond to questions, he said; “I’m responding my friend, if you yab me, I yab you ten times. I am a Lagos boy, you are just a small boy in Lagos. Look at this Mushin boy, he’s talking with a VI boy. I lived in Victoria Island. Look at this Mushin boy from Kogi o.”There has been controversy over the suspension of the management of the NSITF. In a letter on July 1, 2020 and addressed to Adebayo Somefun, managing director of NSITF, Ngige had said President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the suspension of the management Somefun heads over “misappropriation and other gross misconduct”. Somefun was instructed to hand over to the most senior official in the board, and face a panel that would investigate procurement dealings of the agency from 2017 to 2020. Reacting, NSITF, however, had said the president has not given such a directive. See the video below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGupHmbSX84 Ngige to honourable faleke: you’re a small boy, if you yab me I yab you back. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has given the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs , Godswill Akpabio , 48 hours to name the lawmakers who received contracts from the Niger Delta Development Commission. Akpabio had said before a House committee on Monday said that 60 per cent of the contracts awarded by the NDDC was given to lawmakers. The minister’ s claim had generated controversy and questioned the integrity of the committee set up to probe the alleged N 81bn fraud perpetrated by the NDDC . Addressing the House on Tuesday , however, Gbajabiamila , who has been a federal lawmaker since 2003, said he had never received any NDDC contract before . He subsequently gave Akpabio 24 to 48 hours to reveal the identities of the lawmakers that received the contracts or face severe sanction . The Speaker said , “ This is my 5th term here and I have never for once collected anything from the National Assembly and I know I speak for a great majority of members of this House , a great majority. And because of that, I will take this allegation and accusation very seriously. “And I will give the minister ( Akpabio ) 24 to 48 hours . Clerk , I want you to back this up with a letter from this House . Give the minister 24 to 48 hours to publish the names, the contracts so given , the dates because obviously these things will be documented; unveil the companies of the 60 per cent projects that were given to members of the National Assembly . ” Gbajabiamila’ s ultimatum received applause from a large section of the lawmakers. https://punchng.com/gbajabiamila-gives-akpabio-48-hours-to-name-lawmakers-who-received-nddc-contracts/ |
