Mike Igini, resident electoral commissioner of Akwa Ibom state, says local government elections in Nigeria are nothing but organised crime. Speaking when he featured on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, Igini said the kind of people who come into politics sometime determine the outcome of an election while alleging that interference at the grassroots affect the conduct of elections. “Look at the local government system in Nigeria. We have lost 774 local governments in Nigeria to every sitting governor of the 36 states in Nigeria,” Igini said. “Local government elections are nothing but organised crime. They should not be calling them elections at all. They are nothing but coronation ceremony that we have across Nigeria and Nigerians are not doing anything about it; that you have lost your LG, that there is no democracy taking place there. “Because what constitutes free, fair and credible elections with respect to INEC-conducted election is different from the local government.” Igini said INEC has made remarkable progress in the conduct of elections even though it is not where it ought to be. He said the use of public viewing portal used during the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states removed possible electoral fraud as Nigerians saw the results of each polling unit online almost immediately after casting their votes. “I can confirm that INEC has made tremendous progress. The INEC of today is no longer the INEC of before because, since 2011, the kind of elections that we have conducted had a remarkable departure from where we used to be even though we are not where we are supposed to be,” he said. “The INEC public viewing portal is a new innovation to deal with the recurring issues of vote changes and that was why it was introduced at the level of collation to ensure that at the polling unit once result is declared it should be sent to the viewing portal so that Nigerans can see it. “The way we are going.. I am very sure not too far from now, it is INEC that will have to declare results, we will publicise result… that is, where we could do what the CNN do in America by making progressions. That is where we are going.” He also said the political elite are the greatest threat to Nigeria’s democracy as politics is now “the biggest business in Nigeria”. “The problem we are having is that the political elite are the greatest threat to our democracy; they are in disarray. They are the ones attacking both the hardware and software of INEC inorder to bring about credible election,” he said. “They deploy violence to win elections. Politics is now the biggest business in Nigeria, everybody wants to go into politics because the incentives are so high and the political parties have failed to mobilise people around issues that matter and the fact that what you take home as a politician is so high and people are now desperate, meanwhile, it is supposed to be about service . “We have to do something about it.” https://thecable.ng/akwa-ibom-rec-lg-elections-are-organised-crime |
Elisha Abbo, senator representing Adamawa north, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The senator faced public outrage when he assaulted a lady at a intimacy gadget shop in the federal capital territory (FCT) in May 2019. Abbo defection was announced in a letter read by Senate President Ahmad Lawan on the floor of the upper legislative chamber on Wednesday The senator said he left the PDP because it was allegedly being mismanaged by Ahmadu Fintiri, Adamawa governor. The legislator said the PDP in Adamawa has been “polarised” allegedly owing to the leadership of Fintiri. “I write to formally inform you Sir, the Senate and indeed Nigerians of my defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” his letter read by Lawan said. “This is as a result of the mismanagement of the PDP by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri in Adamawa state which led to the crisis in the party that in turn led to the polarization of the party in the state (PDP and rPDP).” Abbo said he is joining the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari to “build the Nigeria of our dreams”. “The journey may be long, but we are on the right track as I strongly believe that by the end of the tenure of Mr. President, Nigeria will be a better place,” he said. “My Senate President Sir, it is worthy of note that in the history of Nigeria’s Nascent democracy, specifically from 1999 till date, no President has paid attention to the welfare of Nigerian Citizens like President Muhamadu Buhari. “Thus, in living up to the expectation of the good people of Adamawa North Senatorial District, I hereby defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with effect from today being Wednesday, the 25th day of November, 2020.” On his part, Lawan said Abbo’s defection “is a show for patriotism, purpose and unity and development of our country”. “We are inviting the remaining distinguished colleagues to join hands with the APC to build Nigeria of our dreams. We have our APC caucus meeting today with the leadership of our party so you are coming at the right time,” he said. https://thecable.ng/elisha-abbo-defects-to-apc-from-pdp |

If the world were to play a game, and the convener of the game says “raise up your hand if your country has been in a recession in 2020,” more than half of the hands in the world will be up. The other half with their hands down will be led by China — a country with nearly 20 percent of the world’s population. Of the top 10 most populous countries, only Bangladesh and China are likely to avoid a recession in 2020. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation captured it well when it said in its 2020 Goalkeepers report that “the COVID-19 financial loss is twice as great as the ‘Great Recession’ of 2008. The last time these many countries were in recession at once was in 1870, literally two lifetimes ago”. When this report was released in September, 2020, Nigeria was yet to officially enter into a recession, but the signs were there, and very clear that the rest of the world already projected one. On Saturday, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) officially announced the GDP numbers. The question then is what countries have slid into recessions in 2020, and what countries are strong — or protected — enough to stave off a recession. According to S&P, of the 34 economies in the world with a GDP of more than $200 billion, only three of them did not report a recession — China, Chile, and Sweden. Chile and Sweden were on the brink of recession, but China has been growing — despite the pandemic. Chile has a history of staving off recessions; it was one of the countries that beat the 2008 global economic crisis, expanding by over 3 percent. But the country’s central bank has said it will go into a recession in 2020. Many other countries are said to be experiencing a recession — but cannot have not yet called one because the data has not been completely collated. TheCable brings you a list of countries in recession: 1. United States 2. Japan 3. United Kingdom 4. India 5. Brazil 6. Russia 7. South Africa 8. Austria 9. Germany 10. Switzerland 11. Belgium 12. Nico had last Saturday doused fuel in a room and set himself and his girlfriend Priscilla on fire, which led to their death. More details have emerged about the married man, Nicodemus Nomyange, who set himself and his girlfriend on fire in Benue state. The Holy Bible in the book of Jeremiah 17:9 says, “the human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” Little wonder Nicodemus Nomyange, popularly known as Nico, succinctly achieved his evil plot without batting an eyelid or being suspected by his victim Priscilla Shiminenge Pam. It will be recalled that Nico had last Saturday doused fuel in a room and set himself and his girlfriend Priscilla on fire, which led to their death. According to Daily Trust, Nico, said to be in his 40s and a staff of a Guest House in Makurdi, had set himself and his girlfriend ablaze over the lady’s refusal to his marriage proposal. The incident occurred at about 5pm in the unsuspecting lady’s residence while she was cooking dinner for her ex-lover. It was learnt that trouble started when the lady told Nico that their relationship could no longer continue because she was set to marry someone else since Nico was already married. The development was said not to have gone down well with Nico who severally threatened Priscilla and even assaulted her on few occasions and eventually stopped visiting her, which paved way for her new relationship to blossom. Witnesses said Nico – a father of three children who hailed from Mbaton-Abeda in Logo Local Government Area of the state, went to his village and divorced his wife in a desperate bid to convince Priscilla of his intentions of marrying her. But the lady wouldn’t bulge as she stuck to her new found man. A neighbour of the deceased lady, Sunny Paul, who narrated the incident to Daily Trust Saturday, said “I noticed the lady was in her room while the man sat outside; we all know him in the compound so his presence didn’t raise any dust. The man came and appealed to her to cook something for him to eat. She told him that there were no ingredients in the house and that the only money in her possession was meant for her church dues but he compelled her to use the money and that he would pay back. “So, she set yam to boil (as you can see traces of the yam littered everywhere) and went to a nearby shop to buy okra by which time the man also went out and returned with a 10-litre gallon of fuel. “As soon as she returned and entered the room, I heard her scream in Tiv language, calling for help. When I ran to her door step, alongside other neighbours, we discovered that the door was locked and the man had soaked the room, himself and the lady with the fuel. In a bid to save them, we broke the door and at that point, the man lit the matches in his hand and the fire overwhelmed them. “We (neighbours) became helpless; we couldn’t help them any longer as we turned our attention to saving the entire building from being overtaken by the fire,” he said. A close friend of the deceased man, Teryima Ajagua, described Nico’s action as ‘sheer wickedness’. Ajagua, who spoke to Daily Trust at the premises of Millennium Guest House where they (Ajagua and the deceased) both worked until the unfortunate incident happened, said he still could not come to terms with the actions of the late man. Ajagua said he was with the deceased until 12 noon on that fateful day and had no inkling of what his friend was up to. He said the deceased had called Priscilla to tell her that he would be at her house, not far from the hotel, and that she should prepare him food to eat. “It’s really sad. It was purely an act of wickedness because he was not mentally unstable as some people alleged. He simply went to her house and did the unimaginable,” he said. Ajagua further told our correspondent that he had accompanied the deceased man to his village about a month ago to divorce his wife on account that he wanted to marry Priscilla, who had consistently maintained that she would not marry him. A nephew to the late Nico, Kelvin Numyange, said he knew his uncle with the lady for a long time. Kelvin said though he does not live with his uncle, he however visited him frequently to help out with domestic chores, noting that on the particular day, the deceased had called him to come and assist with laundry. “I saw when he took the gallon to buy fuel. He told me he was coming back but I noticed that he’d been pensive for some days before the incident. “I came and washed clothes for him as usual. But before he left, he told me his account number, showed me how to unlock his phone and left the handset with me, only for me to hear the sad news moments later,” Kelvin added. At the Lobi Hospital where the late Priscilla worked, staff are still in shock even as they described the deceased as a good fellow. Nancy Orave, an attendant at the hospital, said the late nurse was a very lovely lady who was loved by all. The landlord of the burnt house, Charles Akimbo, was however quoted in a local tabloid as saying that the incident was unfortunate. He appealed to government and good spirited individuals to assist him repair the damaged structures as that remains his only source of livelihood. Priscilla, who hailed from Kwande Local Government Area of the state, was said to be planning for her 35th birthday celebration in December, alongside her wedding, before her untimely death. https://www.tori.ng/news/157927/the-shocking-story-of-how-a-married-man-set-himsel.html

Two days after Governor Dave Umahi formally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC the shape of the emerging effect on the polity within Ebonyi and the Southeast is beginning to emerge. Saturday Vanguard reports that discord among party stakeholders over Umahi may have led to the absence of recognized national leaders of the party from the Southeast at his formal defection on Thursday. With the notable exception of Senator Ken Nnamani, who is a member of the Governor Mala Buni led caretaker committee, all other Southeast leaders including the Senator Hope Uzodinma, hitherto the only APC governor from the Southeast were completely absent. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the Senate Chief Whip and the highest elected political office holder from the Southeast was also absent at Thursday’s event. Also absent was the minister of science and technology, Dr. Ogbonnanya Onu who incidentally comes from the same village, Uburu community, as Umahi was also absent. Also absent was Senator Rochas Okorocha, the first leader of the party from the zone. Saturday Vanguard gathered that the absence of the Southeast APC leaders flowed from what was alleged as the mutterings that flowed from the deals the governor may have reached with the national leadership for his defection. “You can see it that apart from Ken (Nnamani) who had to be there because of his membership of the caretaker committee that all other Southeast leaders were not there. Not even Onu who is from his village was there,” a prominent political player from the state who defected to the APC before Umahi said. “You can see that he was welcomed by Northerners into his new party and certainly his brothers from the Southeast who should have been there were all absent,” the source said. A number of the Southeast APC leaders are also said to be anxious about Umahi’s eyes on the 2023 ticket. Okorocha had earlier in the week said that the Ebonyi State governor would not be a threat to him if he declares. A prominent political stakeholder from Ebonyi State who started making his way back to the PDP once Umahi started romancing the APC told Saturday Vanguard that many of those who were forced out of the PDP by Umahi are on their way back to the PDP that is now in opposition in the state. Among those being mentioned is the immediate past governor of the State, Chief Martins Elechi who defected to the APC after Umahi, who served as deputy governor under him came to power. Elechi who is mourning the death of his son has, however, been very low in the face of the political turmoil in the state. Meanwhile, the political tension over the governor’s defection was beginning to fester at the weekend as the governor’s camp continued desperately to mobilise political stakeholders from the state to follow the governor. As a way of giving fervour to the defection, chairmen of local government councils were yesterday making their own defections from the PDP to the APC. However, the shocking absence of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru who was expected to lead the massive revolt of the House of Assembly members against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP was yesterday beginning to reverberate in the political landscape in the state. One source said that those house members who had earlier pledged were now beginning to have second thoughts. Before the governor’s defection it was learnt that only 10 members of the PDP dominated House of Assembly had refused to defect. However, the governor’s camp was said to have been shocked with the absence of most of the members including the Speaker last Thursday. Saturday Vanguard gathered that a number of the members with the backlash have now relocated to outside the state to allow a cooling down of the tension. Besides, all members of the PDP delegation to the National Assembly turned down the governor’s entreaties to defect. Saturday Vanguard gathered that before he announced his defection, that the governor met with the National Assembly members from the state in the residence of Senator Sam Egwu where he told them of his intention and sought their support. Rep. Igariwey Enwo, a member of the House of Representatives from the state who was present at the meeting while confirming the governor’s entreaty said: “he told us that he wanted to go and we tried persuading him but we saw that he had long gone. I particularly told him that if they had promised you the presidential ticket or the vice-presidential ticket that I support you to go APC,” but the lawmaker said he drew a blank. Enwo said that a member of the House of Representatives who made an attempt to consult his constituents and stakeholders on the issue of defecting was forced to do an about turn when he met with rebukes from the stakeholders in his constituency. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/11/shocker-apc-igbo-leaders-cold-to-umahi/

EXCLUSIVE: APC governors swoop on Jonathan ahead of 2023 elections !!! Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held a private meeting with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Friday evening, TheCable can report. No single member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was present. Mai Mala Buni, governor of Yobe state and acting national chairman of the APC, led the governors to Jonathan’s residence in Abuja. David Umahi, governor of Ebonyi who recently defected to the APC from the PDP; Atiku Bagudu, governor of Kebbi and chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum; and Abubakar Badaru, governor of Jigawa, were at the meeting, TheCable was informed. Also in the team was Kashim Ibrahim-Imam, former presidential liaison officer to the national assembly. It is unclear what the focus of their discussion was but an insider told TheCable “2023 permutations are taking shape”. Jonathan was elected president in 2011 and lost to Buhari in 2015, but he is still qualified to run having only spent one term of four years in office. Coincidentally, Jonathan hosted the duo of Badaru and Bagudu at his Otuoke residence in Bayelsa a year ago. The governors had visited Jonathan to thank him for his support in the victory of David Lyon, the APC candidate in the 2019 governorship election in Bayelsa. Lyon was eventually sacked by the supreme court while Douye Diri of the PDP was declared winner of the election. On Friday, APC leaders, including Ken Nnamani, a former senate president, visited Jonathan in commemoration of his 63rd birthday. They held a private meeting with the ex-president during the visit which held after the Northern Governors’ Forum congratulated Jonathan on his birthday. The Northern Governors Forum had sent warm felicitations to Jonathan on his birthday. In a statement, Simon Lalong, chairman of the forum and governor of Plateau, said the former president has continued to serve the country with zeal and commitment. He described Jonathan as a true democrat whose “passion for the growth of democracy is reflected not only in his records while in office but also of his current engagements where he has travelled round the world to monitor elections and also engage with stakeholders”. Lalong also saluted the former president’s patriotism and dedication to the unity, peace and development of Nigeria as well as offering counsel on various issues. He asked him to remain focused on his life of service that has brought honour and goodwill to Nigeria. President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier felicitated with Jonathan, saying he has brought honour to Nigeria . https://thecable.ng/apc-governors-swoop-on-jonathan |

They killed one officer in the process. “Bandits may abduct Buhari soon. Our country is going down daily but Buhari is busy hailing himself,” he tweeted. Bandits were said to have ambushed the officers in Mariga Local Government Area of the State. The incident had led to the death of one of the officers, while others were abducted by the bandits. https://dailypost.ng/2020/11/21/bandits-may-kidnap-buhari-soon-president-mocked-over-abduction-of-seven-police-officers/ |

The residential carer, from California, has splurged £19,530 so far, covering every inch of her skin from the soles of her feet to the top of her head. https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2020/nov/19/tat.jpg Julia Nuno Julia Nuno, a 32-year-old tattoo-obsessed woman has covered her body with tattoos. According to Daily Star UK, the woman has spent nearly £20,000 on various designs to ensure almost every part of her body is covered in ink. Julia Nuno got her first piece of permanent body art when she was 18. And in the last three years, she's dedicated a total of 234 hours getting a full body suit. The residential carer, from California, has splurged £19,530 so far, covering every inch of her skin from the soles of her feet to the top of her head. Despite concerns from her family, Julia even had her genital area tattooed earlier this month in Texas. She also plans to get her face - the last remaining untouched space - covered in geometric flowers in the future. Julia said: "It’s taken me quite a while, I started getting tattooed as soon as I was old enough. "Collecting them came a bit for me, it’s only over the last few years that I have been going constantly. "I started out small with a hibiscus flower on my chest but it just ended up growing... "I had no intention of collecting or getting a suit but somewhere down the line I just decided to go all the way. Now I can’t stop." https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2020/nov/19/tat1.jpg For the last three years, Julia has spent three hours in tattoo parlours every fortnight, adding to her collection. But the ink lover admits it’s the sessions and process of getting the work done that keeps her going back, adding she usually lets the artist choose the design. "For a long time I told myself and other people that I would never shave my head to get it tattooed, I said 'that’s crazy'," she said. "But when I ran out of space on my body it was the next obvious part. https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2020/nov/19/tat2.jpg "I feel like the more tattooed I am the more irritating it feels to see empty space. "When I’m finished I’m going to go over my existing suit restoring the colours and existing lines. "The sessions are really special to me, the art is nice but it’s the actual tattooing sessions that I’m really addicted to. A lot of times I let the man who tattoos me pick the art. "I have ideas about what I want to get but usually it’s what he chooses." Despite concerns from her family that she might be going too far, Julia feels she must keep going and plans to get her face covered later this year. The singleton added that while some people have been put off by her tattoos others have been entranced by them and often strangers will come up to her in the street to touch her skin. She said: "The people I work with are very accepting and look past it but I think some of my family have problems with how many tattoos I have. https://www.dailystar.co.uk/real-life/woman-spends-20k-full-body-23034481 |

A wave of street protests swept across Nigeria in October as young people poured out to demand an end to police brutality and bad governance in the country. In a bid to break the peaceful demonstrations, the government sent in armed thugs and security operatives, who unleashed terror on the people. The climax came on October 20 when the Lagos State Government drafted in soldiers of the Nigerian Army to attack demonstrators at the Lekki Toll Gate area of the state. According to Amnesty International, over 10 persons lost their lives following the attack by the soldiers. A Judicial Panel of Inquiry has been established by the Lagos Government to unravel the incident of October 20 and brutality by personnel of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad. http://saharareporters.com/2020/11/10/government-sponsored-activist-sues-davido-tiwa-savage-falz-aisha-yesufu-other-celebrities |

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has opposed a suit seeking to remove the Ajami (Arabic) inscriptions on naira notes. It told the Federal High Court that it would cost the country a “colossal sum of money” to discard the existing notes and print new ones without Ajami. The CBN said Ajami is not a symbol or mark of Islam but an inscription to aid non-English speakers who are literate in and use Ajami for trade. The apex bank made the submission in a counter- affidavit to a suit filed by a Lagos-based lawyer, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo, before Justice Mohammed Liman. Omirhobo argued that the Arabic inscriptions on the naira notes portray Nigeria as an Islamic state, contrary to the country’s constitutional status of a multi-religious state. He contended that this violates sections 10 and 55 of the Constitution, which makes the country a multi-religious state. Section 10 reads: “The government of the Federation or of a state shall not adopt any religion as state religion.” Omirhobo prayed the court to restrain the CBN from “further approving, printing and issuing naira notes with Arabic inscriptions, bearing in mind that Nigeria is a secular state”. He also prayed the court to order the CBN to replace the Arabic inscriptions with either English language, which is the country’s official language, or any of Nigeria’s three main indigenous languages – Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo. But in its counter-affidavit deposed to by Abiola Lawal, the CBN argued that “the Ajami inscriptions on some of the country’s currencies do not connote any religious statements or Arabian alignment”. The apex bank maintained that contrary to Omirhobo’s claim, the Arabic inscriptions were not a threat to Nigeria’s multi-religious status. https://thenationonlineng.net/cbn-opposes-bid-to-remove-arabic-from-naira-notee/

A Keke driver's wife who delivered a set of quintuplets has been pictured with their babies in new photos. Ndidi Odo, the 32-year-old wife of a Keke driver who gave birth to quintuplets has been pictured with her babies. Mrs Odo is pictured with her adorable quintuplets, four boys and a girl, named Akachukwu, Chiemelie, Chidiomimi, Chinweolu and Ezinwanne. It will be recalled that Nididi and her husband Abuchi Odo, a native of Okpaligbo-Ogu in Nsukka, Enugu State, welcomed the quintuplets in 2018 at God's Mercy Hospital, Obiuno, in Otolo Nnewi, Anambra State. The couple already had four children (three females and a male) before the arrival of the quintuplets. Nnewi businessman and philanthropist, Sir Lous Carter Onwugbenu had offset their hospital bill after birth and offered scholarship to the children up to the university level. It's not clear when the new photo was taken. Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday said Rashidi Ladoja, former governor of Oyo, was impeached for being ungrateful to Lamidi Adedibu and Yekinni Adeojo. Adedibu, now late, was referred to as the strongman of Ibadan politics, while Adeojo is a prominent politician in Oyo. Speaking during the launch of the autobiography of Adebayo Alao-Akala, also a former governor of Oyo, Obasanjo said Ladoja had turned deaf ears to his entreaties and he paid heavily for it. “You pointed out on page 140 that Ladoja picked up a quarrel with me for reason of a non- existent third term,” he said. “I didn’t know that Ladoja picked up a quarrel that his becoming governor was due to the grace of God and major contributions of the two people. “I pleaded with him to make accommodation for them both. He told me that they were all Ibadan people and they knew how to deal with themselves. He subsequently proved himself right as they dealt with themselves and he, Ladoja, came out the worse for it.” Alao-Akala was the deputy governor of the state from 2003 to 2007 until Ladoja was impeached. On his part, Alao-Alala said that he was a product of grace, saying God paved his way to greatness. He narrated how his long anticipated desire was fulfilled, notwithstanding threat to achieving the dream. “The tragic death of my father in a road accident in 1952 single-handedly threatened my dream of getting to the cusp of my life aspirations,” he said. “But providence miraculously found for me a path to the top.” Alao-Akala said the 140-page book contained how he attained his desire and changed the lives of the people in the state. “How I became governor of Oyo state is also documented which serves as a reminder to those who may be prone to being quickly swept off by the amnesia of history that God used me. “How myself and my team of dependable colleagues at that period in time changed the lives of the people in the state.” https://thecable.ng/obasanjo-how-ladoja-could-have-avoided-impeachment |
