Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Salary Vs Self Employment, Which Do You Prefer by executinal(m): 3:42pm On Dec 06, 2011 |
Jarus: Self-employment is good, in fact very good, but I'm afraid it's been overrated with all these shouts about it and continuous demonization of salaried jobs.
Some questions:
1, Where do you get capital to start your business? 2, Where do you get experience to manage your business? Or you think you can just graduate from school and run a business like that? 3, Where do you get the network to sustain your business? 4, What do you fall back to if, just if, the business fails? 5, How many people will trust you - at least in the beginning - if they know you've not been tested somewhere else before? Questions, questions and more questions
Truth is less than 15% of self-employed people actually made it without being on someone else's employ before. Most of them started as salaried people and even there is nothing absolutely wrong in spending all your career till retirement as salaried person. A salaried person that rises to become a bank CEO, will be better off than many self-employed business owners.
There is also the risk factor. Some people are just risk-averse and cannot take all the risks associated with owning the business.
Instead of demonizing paid employment, I think emphasis should be on how to strike a balance - invest your income while under paid employment(preparing for rainy day); if possible, run your private biz while still on another man's employ and break out when you get your footing; if you can't get paid job at all, then try strive your way to identify self-employment opportunities, rather than die looking for paid job. @Jarus you raised a valid points, however some of your questions, find the answers 1, Where do you get capital to start your business? ( You play the role of mandate or intermediary between sellers and buyers and raise capital through commission eg importing rice into Nigeria for a buyer whom is not perfect through online business. So not all business involves capital. or Better still become an Agent to house owners) 2, Where do you get experience to manage your business? Or you think you can just graduate from school and run a business like that? (Read books, or better still ask for recommendations on some books for your guide. For me i read Rich dad poor dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki) 3, Where do you get the network to sustain your business? (Before you embark on business, you must have a lay down procedure to actualize your dream. Using a house agent as example, your network should be moving around with your proposal, or better still sourcing for buyers or sellers through online trade sites. Or if it became worst, you get part time job and still focusing on your business) 4, What do you fall back to if, just if, the business fails? (Before going into a business you should have financial IQ, in which you should be able to know what asset and liability is all about. For Example you establish a business with lets say 1000000 naira, after three months, you experience slight increase in your goods / capital and all you could do is just to buy a private car worth 800,000 naira, automatically you have killed the business because your car pull out more cash from your investment instead of yielding to it which is a big liability. 5, How many people will trust you - at least in the beginning - if they know you've not been tested somewhere else before? (Trust?? well if it have to do with online business, i will agree with that. But if it have to do with physical goods, you can have surety or have something for colleteral, for example you need loan from Bank, once you meet their requirements they will release the money for you. |

Babasessy: Reps to probe Obasanjo’s private refineries’ deal
Friday, 02 December 2011
FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo is on the spot. Less than 24 hours after the National Assembly manipulated him in the 'prodigal' sale of some Federal Government properties while he was president between 2002 and 2004, the House of Representatives yesterday vowed to investigate the circumstances surrounding how he gave licences to some individuals to operate oil refineries.
Between that period, the Obasanjo administration gave licences to 26 groups and individuals to commence crude oil processing in the country, none of which could take off till date.
It is believed that associates and allies of the former president were among those who got the licences which members of the House of Representatives lamented had not helped the country. The licences were given to Clean Waters Refinery, Ilaje Refinery, NSP Refinery and Oils Services, Ode Ade Refinery, Tonwei Refinery, The Chasewood Consortium, Starex Petroleum Refinery, Orient Petroleum Resources, Niger/Delta Refinery and Akwa Ibom Refinery and Petrochemicals.
Others are Badagry Petroleum Refinery, Niger Delta Refinery and Petrochemicals, Owena Oil and Gas, Rivgas Petroleum and Energy, Sapele Petroleum, Southland Associates, South West Refineries and Petrochemicals, Starex Petroleum Refinery, Towel Refinery, Total Support Refineries and Union Atlantic Petroleum.
The lawmakers want to know why the companies, which were expected to commence construction within two years and full refining operations in four years, are yet to take off, even though their owners continue to enjoy tax holiday and import duty wavers from the Federal Government on some of their equipment.
The lawmakers expressed worry over the whopping sum the Federal Government, as a result, is still spending annually on subsidy on refined products being imported into the country.
Nigeria, according to them, is currently spending not less than N1.256 trillion on importation of petroleum products for domestic consumption, also put at 18.72 per cent capacity.
Leading debate on the motion which was sponsored by 25 lawmakers yesterday, Rose Oko raised concerns that the poor state of the nation’s four refineries in Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna have failed to meet the estimated daily demand for petroleum products among Nigerians currently put at 30 million litres of petrol (PMS), 12 million litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), 18 million litres of (AGO) and 780 metrics tonnes of (1.4) million litres of LPG.
The lawmakers went further to express regrets on how the entire four refineries which gulp billions of naira during Obasanjo's tenure amounted to colossal waste.
The four refineries now merely have production capacity of 445,000 barrels per day; a figure that can only meet 17 per cent of the entire domestic demand.
The motion, which enjoyed robust support from members, is demanding to know all processes that led to the granting of the 26 refineries, a development that some of them said smacks of favouritism to certain individuals but prevented established investors in the sector from taking part.
While faulting the entire process, they concluded that if none of these private refineries can work nine years after, it means that the initial licences were granted to the wrong set of people who may either have little or no experience in the sector or procured such for money-making motive. The House before it adjourned yesterday, however, threw its weight behind the issues raised and mandated its standing Committee on Petroleum Resources, (Downstream) to commence a full investigation into all allegations and report back to it within four weeks.
The House also mandated the committee to scrutinise the delays in completion of construction works and commencement of refineries.

manchy7531: Britain, Amnesty International Berates Nigeria’s Anti man-lover Law
Britain and Amnesty International, the world human right organization, have opposed the passing into law of the law against homosexuality in Nigeria with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Andrew Lloyd, declaring that Britain would not condone
such an action against a set of people who have chosen to live their lives the way the liked.
Amnesty International has also asked President Goodluck Jonathan to use his veto power to throw away the bill since, according to them, it is anti-human right and not popularly accepted around the world.
The Senate had Tuesday passed a law banning the public practice of homosexuality with the bill it signed into law stipulating a 14-year jail term for anyone who goes ahead to marry same sex and another 10 syear for any accomplice or anyone who goes ahead to assist in the process leading to such marriage.
The Senate President, David Mark, had claimed that the practice was against his faith as a Christian and warned the West to desist from interfering in the law making process of the country, which to him, should be allowed to run its independence without interference. His statement was in reference to the threat by British Prime Minister, David Cameron, that the country may cease its aids to Nigeria if the bill was passed.
However, Lloyd, in reaction to the stand of the Senate said his country would not tolerate the action of the Senate. Speaking after a courtesy call on the Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, the British High Commissioner said though every country has a right to practice its cultural and religious beliefs, the laws punishing expression of one’s sexuality should not be a yardstick for reprimanding or changing such individuals.
"It is wrong to punish people for mere expression of their relationships or for choosing to become what they have chosen for themselves. Punishment is infringement upon their fundamental human rights and the Western countries would not condone the action," he said.
Amnesty International said it had called on the Nigerian government previously to stop going ahead with the bill, which is now expected to go before the House of Representatives for approval, after which the President would give his assent. The body described its punishment as harsh and an opposition to the basic rights and freedom of individuals.
The organisation's Director of the Africa Programme, Erwin van der Borght, who spoke on behalf of the body, said: "Nigeria’s House of Representatives should show leadership and uphold the rights of all in Nigeria by rejecting this reprehensible bill. If passed, this measure would target people on the basis of their identity, not merely their behaviour and put a wide range of people at risk of criminal sanctions for exercising basic rights and opposing discrimination based purely on a person’s actual or presumed intimate orientation or gender identity."
Amnesty International also raised concerns that individuals could face imprisonment based mere assumption of intimate orientation or gender identity, or as a result of allegations about their relationship status or consensual intimate conduct. It also said the action would frustrate Nigeria’s efforts to prevent HIV transmission since the law would further force homosexuals to continue to operate in secret.
"By aiming to single out and deprive the rights of one group of people, this bill threatens all Nigerians by violating the country’s Constitution and international human rights obligations. This bill would have a chilling effect on a range of civil society organisations and events while inciting hatred and violence against anyone suspected of practising same-sex relationships, including lady-loving-lady, man-lover, bisexual, and transgender people," Erwin van der Borght
