Then there were splinter groups like the Arians who claimed Jesus was married had a wife and children.
Then there were the Gnostics who claimed Jesus powers and miracles was learnt from Egypt and other places.
Other church leaders emerged after Peter and Paul and John, these joined the politics of the day and gradually began syncretizing other beliefs with Jesus's teachings.
Then came Constantine an emperor who declared Christianity state religion and continued the syncretism until you have what you now have.
