Personally, I have since noticed that channels are heavily biased against opposition guests in their studio. When an opposition guest or someone they believe holds a contrary view to that of buhari and the APC is in the studio, you would think the person is a defendant in a law court where the interviewer is the prosecutor who has a job to convict him or perhaps discredit him before the viewing public. However, when a pro buhari figure is the guest, you see the same panellists or interviewer lose all sense of prowress. Sometimes, you will see the guest in the quest to cover up lies, make some glaring blunders which one will expect a smart journalist to pick on but they will let it slide. The worst was maupe ogun. Because of her celebrated amorous relationship with the APC majority leader, Femi Gbajabiamilla, she always took it personal whenever the guest tend to vilify the APC or their lies. Sadly today, whenever Channels Tv announces the presence of an APC stalwart or apologist in their studio, I just changed the station because I know it's a prearranged publicity stunt for the guest and APC and not a drill aimed at extracting the fact and truth. The interview will be a mere academic exercise aimed at guiding the guest to pass on to the public whatever propaganda he wishes to deceive Nigerians with. It's very sad that channels has gone this way. My best news station today is Arise Tv. Very professional and objective with top notch quality broadcasting. I wonder how Channels still gets to win awards with Arise Tv in existence. As for NTA, journalism has since gone to the dogs there. I knew NTA was headed for this when President Buhari on assumption of office, ensured his very first appointment was the appointment of his relation as the DG of NTA, six months before even appointing ministers! I don't dare watch that station, even if my life depended on it. I tell any young journalism student that if you wish to practice journalism and understand it's tenets, don't go near NTA. It is so bad that recently I travelled to my modest village in IMO state for some engagements. After I was done, I decided to spend about three days in the quiet hinterland devoid of the mad city rush. With my dstv remote, I planned to stay indoors and just watch tv peacefully but on the second day of my three days rest, the subscription expired as my favourite channels started disappearing one by one till I was left with NTA. I tried watching the station and the lies, propaganda and one sided news reporting was so infuriating that I put off the tv, went up, parked my belongings and travelled back to Lagos, cutting short my rest by one day. If you are a foreigner and watch only NTA, you will at a point think Adams Oshiomole is Nigeria's president. It's that partisan. And yet there were some major newsworthy events that took place in the PDP that will be conspicuously missing on nta news. It's very sad that channels decided to tow this partisan part. |
The NTA-nisation of Channels TV Onoshe Nwabuikwu First of all: introduction. NTA is the Nigerian Television Authority, largely federal government-owned. Once upon a time, nearly everyone in Nigeria was hooked up to NTA. Then came the deregulation of broadcasting in 1992, thank God. On the other hand, Channels TV which began broadcasting in 1995 is owned by John Momoh as Chairman/CEO, assisted by his wife, Sola Momoh, who is vice-chairman. Never thought I’d ever use NTA and Channels TV in the same sentence. In spite of the fact that someone I know calls Channels TV ‘a glorified NTA’ or ‘a slightly better version of NTA’. Also, in spite of the fact that John Momoh is an alumnus of NTA. I stay away from NTA as much as I can these days despite its rich source and a real treasure trove for the Come Again? section of this column. This is because NTA puts government first and journalism last. Channels TV (Dstv 254), on the other hand, ‘has a well-earned reputation as a professional establishment. Its presenters had a clear mark of excellence, standing shoulders above the competition. Winning Best TV Station for the 10th time is a testament to this. Channels TV was the station to go when you wanted unbiased objective and informed news’. This was from two years ago. Channels TV has now won the award for Best TV Station, 14 times. If you think I was being unduly optimistic about the TV station, here’s what Channels TV says on its website about what it is set up to do: “Give an alternative medium of communication to the government-controlled media in Nigeria. Perform the role of a true watch-dog of the government and its policies and hold public officers accountable to the people”. Does this sound like the present Channels TV? I wasn’t really interested in writing about Channels TV again; yes, again. That earlier quote was from a story I wrote for this column two years ago (February, 14 2016) titled: ‘How Not To Interview A Guest, Part 1 & 2. However, recent events have more or less compelled this write up. It began with reports that NTA, after acknowledging receipt of payment, refused to air the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar’s campaign ads. I simply waved it away. I would have been more interested in that story if there was any evidence that the broadcast watchdog, National Broadcasting Commission, would act. The NBC DG, Ishaq Modibo Kawu, was last ‘seen’ defending himself against an allegation of embezzling N2.5bn. Then last week happened. Over 100 soldiers were killed by Boko Haram. In the process of dismissing the deaths on Channels TV’s Politics Today hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, Femi Adesina reportedly claimed countries around the world usually don’t release the names of dead soldiers, or implied words to that effect. Foreign journalists began to disprove Adesina’s claims almost immediately. Even at that, I shrugged Adesina’s comments off. This is Femi Adesina we are talking about, the man who has a collection of greatest hits such as Wailing Wailers, among others. However, by Tuesday, the story was different. There were claims that Adesina’s interview uploaded online had been edited to remove the controversial parts. Now, this is a new low for Nigeria’s supposedly best TV station. I am not surprised about the station trying to outdo NTA as a better promoter of the government, contrary to their mission statement. I first called Channels TV out two years ago when Maupe Ogun-Yusuf had an interview with the NCP’s Mark Onovo. She sounded like the militant press arm of the ruling party. Once in a while, I notice the presenters remember they are supposed to be journalists. I see the struggle. It must take extra power for them to dumb themselves down, the way they do, week in, week out, and interviewee after interviewee. Imagine a Festus Keyamo comes on your show crowing about all kinds of achievements and you, the interviewer, has to have a conversation like you live on the moon and only just stepped in for that interview. And just how scary the Nigeria Police gets when they decide to prove they know the law. You should see Channels TV guys when the guest is an ‘opposition’ politician. The other day, when Mustapha Chike-Obi was a guest on Sunrise Daily, Chamberlain Usoh and Nneota Egbe couldn’t ask him questions fast enough. For this reason, I’m willing to concede that perhaps, just perhaps, Channels TV deserves their title of Best TV Station, after all. All that hard work! The question should be: ‘Best TV Station in Nigeria,’ For what? Doctoring videos? Just before concluding this piece, I decided to watch Sunrise Daily just in case something had changed. Immediately after the review, the next guest that was promoted was Garba Shehu, who is the better half of the presidential Aki and Pawpaw Show. No, I didn’t wait to find out what he said. I don’t blame presidential media aides for doing their job, the way they understand it. But I blame journalists for not doing their own jobs. https://punchng.com/thenta-nisation-of-channels-tv/ |

South African mercenaries says Buhari ignored intelligence warnings Specialised Tasks, Training, Equipment and Protection International (STTEP), a South African mercenary company, says President Muhammadu Buhari rejected intelligence warnings about operations of Boko Haram in Borno. STTEP was employed by former president Goodluck Jonathan in January 2015 to assist the Nigerian army in rescuing the Chibok girls. In a Facebook post on Sunday, Eeben Barlow, STTEP chairman, said Nigerian soldiers have been reaching out for help since his company’s services were terminated. Barlow is speaking out in the wake of the deadly killing of Nigerian soldiers by Boko Haram insurgents. The latest attack in Melete village, Borno, is believed to have led to the death of no less than 100 soldiers. Weighing in on the development, Barlow said Buhari’s administration did not allow his company to complete the objective of “degrading and destroying” Boko Haram in Borno. He wrote: “There is, in a purely military sense, no such thing as a ‘technical defeat’—something the President, as an ex-military man ought to know. Sadly, he also chose to make the successes of 7 Infantry Division and 72 Mobile Strike Force (MSF) his own, when it wasn’t. “President Buhari and his team were, however, part of the political leader group that led the vocal charge about STTEP’s presence in Nigeria. Indeed, they made it known that the company’s presence would not be tolerated under his office. “The initial 3-phase campaign strategy (known as ‘Operational Anvil’) to degrade and destroy BH in Borno State, was rejected by his advisors. “Many of the men we trained as part of 72 Mobile Strike Force have remained in contact with us (STTEP), pleading for our return to Nigeria. They have also told us that they have been used to a point of exhaustion. “Prior to, and following our departure from Nigeria, we issued numerous intelligence warnings to his government. These intelligence warnings were all rejected in favour of a false belief. Neighbouring countries were advised not to listen to us as it was claimed to be a cheap attempt to ‘get a contract’. Chad, Cameroon and Niger are now also reaping the benefits of rejecting intelligence in favour of an agenda-driven narrative.” In a statement released on Saturday by his media team, the president described the attack as a national tragedy. http:///4d7ddbc6_ng?fbclid=IwAR3ZhWW40bEKA0NHOmGIguUu7PA9WtVgE170zpEqebGWwaFUd5r1fLlKOUU |

Son, you don't need to be offended at my remark cos you may have still been a kid to grasp what I have said. Most of you are students of recent victory who just remembers nothing beyond Jonathan's era. We are in the 4th republic. An igbo man was the President of the first republic and vice at the second republic and the person that was beaten at both elections were awo. In the third republic, abiola who almost won saw his mandate botched. Shonekan who was put there to head an interim transition govt was sacked in weeks in a coup. Hence, everybody now wondered if (like you are quipping now) if Yoruba are jinxed in ruling this nation and out of sympathy it was agreed by all to help them by zoning the presidency to them. That's why in 1999 at the inception of fourth republic, it was OBJ vs Olu Falae. |

Chief Chekwas Okorie is the National Chairman of the United Progressive Congress and the party’s Presidential candidate in the 2015 general elections. In this interview with Vanguard , Okorie who also founded the All Progressive Grand Alliance said that the UPP will not accommodate politicians that jump from one party to the other. He also denies the report that he was quizzed by the DSS. Okorie says his party does not support secession but it believes in self determination and referendum among others. Excerpts: By Johnbosco Agbakwuru IT was recently reported that you were quizzed for allegedly supporting the IPOB agitation, what is the situation? There was nothing like DSS quizzing me on account of what United Progressive Party represents. We have never been invited, we have never been visited and there has never been any inquiry from the State Security Services. As for the support for Biafra the party had a convention recently and one of the aspects of our updated manifesto is self determination and referendum as well as other very progressive ideological thrusts. So there is no way a political party registered in Nigeria to seek power in Nigeria, for the welfare of Nigerians can at the same time be supporting secession. Supporting secession But if you are looking at the Biafra that Ikemba talked about before he died, or Biafra as an ideology, count me in because the Biafran ideology ought to be the Nigerian ideology, a true Nigerian ideology. We have had a situation here where a book was written entitled, “We are all Biafrans” and that book was presented by Atiku Abubakar. Not long ago, in May actually, the Yar’ adua foundation convened a seminar to mark 50years of Biafra. The Acting President was there as a special guest and he spoke. Former President Obasanjo was there and so many top Nigerian leaders including my humble self. So the issue of Biafra is something that would remain topical and it depends from the angle you see it. If you see it from the angle that what led to that war should be avoided, then that is positive. But if you are looking at it from the point of view of breaking away from the country that is the negative side for which no political party that is national in nature would be part of. I have always talked about restructuring, self determination and giving Nigerians the opportunity to decide their fate through referendum. Is the UPP ready for the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State? I want to say this without being boastful or being presumptuous about it. The Anambra 2017 election is UPP versus UPP. That is what it is and I will explain it. The incumbent party in government is APGA. APGA has been torn into shreds by litigation. As we speak today, the authentic Chairman of APGA, by order of court is Martin Agbaso and that means he is the one to sign the nomination of APGA candidate for that election. The preferred Chairman of APGA is Victor Oye. He is preferred by the governor; and the governor and government of Anambra State have thrown in everything they know in the books including hiring high profile lawyers to represent the Police interest because they are not party to the suit. A very odd arrangement and still they have not been able to make any headway which means APGA is not available to Obiano to run for election because Chief Martin Agbaso and his own followers have their own agenda for which Governor Obiano will not be a beneficiary. As for APC, I can tell you APC made their own members whether they are running for office or not personae non grata. And what that simply means is that the people distanced from both their party and themselves for the simple reason that the party was the first to distance itself from the people by its act of nepotism, by its act of exclusion in important appointments including non presence of any federal project, not just in Anambra but in the entire South East and the kind of comments that emanate from leaders of the party especially the President who is now on health vacation. So, it would be a bad dream for APC to imagine that during the election that a rational person from the South East especially Anambra will leave his house and go to the polling station to cast his vote for APC. So APC is out of the contest by its own doing. Whatever is left of PDP would be so lean, so emaciated that it would not stand for anything. In addition to that, PDP was in government for 16 years and both in the South East except for Anambra, they dominated government of the South East, they dominated National Assembly, they have the federal government even the President was given an Igbo nickname Ebele Azikiwe all in attempt to make him feel he is Igbo and still that did not persuade him to do anything for which he would be remembered for. Yes he made appointments but appointments all over the world benefit principally the individuals and their families. If he builds road poor man, big man would ride on it. If he provides infrastructure, it would benefit everybody. But when you give appointments, the children of the average person will now become children of wealthy people and perhaps start embarking on vacations all over the world and that is not something you can say has been done for the people. Chekwas Okorie So that leaves UPP on its own not having any serious contender. Do you think the National Assembly has sufficiently protected all sections of the country? The National Assembly is not talking about federal character. The National Assembly is not concerned that we have a national security council in which no Igbo man is sitting. Federal character The national assembly is not bothered that there is a law that says that if the PENCOM DG is removed, another one would come from the same zone, they are not bothered about what the law say. They are only concerned about the office of SGF, the office of EFCC and all that. I am not impressed. Nigeria would have been a better place if they had queried the appointments made by President Muhammadu Buhari in terms of lopsidedness, in terms of equity, and in terms of fairness. That would have made the National Assembly to be seen as protecting the people of Nigeria that voted them in. Some allege that the UPP is only seen on television, how true is this? We are not far away from when the results would be out which is 10th of November, God keep us alive Nigerians would see it and know who is right and who is wrong. I have been involved in Igbo right crusade for 41 years and I have founded two political parties. I used the first one and we won election even when PDP was dominating the election in the politics of the South East. We won it, it was rigged, we went back to the Tribunal and recovered it. And we are going to do it again. In Anambra state, anybody who has followed the political antecedents of Anambra state will know that money has never influenced who wins and who loses. Who are the big shots from other parties that have joined the UPP? UPP is a grassroots party just like APGA. When I founded APGA, the only person we could call big shot was Ikemba, no other, still we won election. UPP is a grassroots party. The people we have in UPP are young people. In fact, I am one of the oldest people in UPP because of my consistency in trying to have something left for the younger ones. I will be 65 years by March next year but I am one of the oldest persons in UPP. If you go to UPP, you see them in their forties, thirties, and in their twenties. These are the people to whom the future belongs and in our new constitutional amendment, we made our delegates to state congress to be statutory and we provided for youth leader and women leader that they must be delegates. So all these things we are doing to empower the youths and the women and no other party can ever boast of those kind of provisions. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/07/no-rational-igbo-man-will-support-apc-chekwas-okorie-2/amp/?__twitter_impression=true |
So the other 'non core' civil servants don't feed nor train children in schools? Ikpeazu would have been the best governor in Nigeria if he was free from the shackles of TA ORJI and the son. And that may be his greatest undoing in 2019 |

By Chidi Nkwopara OWERRI— Governor Rochas Okorocha’s people of Ideato North and South local council areas of Imo state have raised alarm that less than seven months to vacate Douglas House, he “is about leaving Ideato federal constituency worse than he met it”. The people’s lamentation is contained in a press statement issued by the umbrella union of Mbanasa, Arondizogu, Nwabosi Association, MANA, and signed by the chairman, Interim Board of Trustees, BOT, Sir Phil Ezeogu and Interim Secretary General, Sir Emeka Ajih. “Ideato nation, more than ever, now faces grave infrastructural challenges. Under the watch of Owelle Rochas Okorocha, Ideato nation had been without electricity for the past seven years, a development he was instrumental to”, the people said. They cited that the construction of both trunks ‘A’ and ‘B’ roads in the area, which they claimed “led to the dismantling of electric poles, are not just in terrible and impassable conditions, but boulevards leading to the land of the dead”. The people were also pained that the entire landscape of the federal constituency is under the threat of ecological disaster. “This situation is largely owing to the abandonment of gully erosion projects and road construction sites. The World Bank Assisted gully erosion projects at Urualla and Umueshi communities in Ideato North and Ideato South local government areas, respectively, are cases in point”, MANA leadership lamented. The group appealed to Governor Okorocha to commence urgent remedial action to forestall what they termed “the looming disaster”. While saying that they cannot fold their arms and allow Ideato nation to go extinct, the people also called on the state govt to engage reputable construction firms, for immediate reconstruction of their roads. “Henceforth, wheelbarrow and head pan construction companies and roadside engineers, will not be allowed into Ideato nation for any construction, be it road or erosion control”, the people warned. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/11/kinsmen-attack-okorocha-say-he-destroyed-their-lands-roads/ |
