It really surprises me when Nigerians act surprised. It's like everything is forgotten in Nigeria, a man can exterminate a whole village, ten years passes and his still in power and some people even praise him!

All Nigeria's problems (and most of Africa) stems from the lack of a dominant culture, Africa was doing well under the various (different) cultures of Europe that were homogenous, and they never planned for their colonies to stop being colonies. That plus the fact that Africa's survival independent of them didn't interest them led to the gargantuan and meaningless (culture-less, history-less and pride-less, no gelling factor) 'countries' that are often misnamed as 'nations'.

All of you can argue about various things that are just a result of the cause you're tiptoeing about (well most of you), the fact that none of Africa's borders were changed (the same borders that ripped families apart for the benefit of European Lords) since 18-who-knows-when.

You only have to look at a map of European and African countries and then the map of their language/ethnicities to know that colonizers did not squeeze money out of your ancestors by not planning.

Considering the nature of Nri influence, I doubt such a thing could have ever happened. If Nri had military-style influence though, then I can almost positively say that even though the number of divisions would be less, the divisions themselves would be much more intense. All the same though, I'm immensely glad Nri influence stayed confined.

My brother, let's not argue over this. What is taught in schools and used for other official purposes is 'STANDARD IGBO,' which many laymen call "Central Igbo." Standard Igbo is an agglutination of different dialects (for compromise sake), but standard Igbo is NOT spoken by a particular Igbo linguistic group. For example, there is no nasalisation and aspiration in Standard Igbo, meanwhile, both features are very present in almost all parts of Imo & Abia states (which area comprises the so-called 'Central Igbo'). However, tone is a universal process in all Igbo dialects and the standard form.

I'm not trying to argue, I was giving an account of my own experiences, Igbo people on the other side of the Niger who might as well be speaking another language sometimes use standard or central Igbo to communicate with other Igbo people. Either this or they've learnt a specific Igbo dialect. This is just what happens. If the person starts of with central Igbo then they'd have a better understanding of different dialects. I know central Igbo was created by a comity some years ago; even if it wasn't, do you really think Igbo people are united enough to adopt someone else's dialect? I'm not here to promote or knock the 'authenticity' of central Igbo, just giving reality, apart from that I agree with you.

Doesn't it feel like a big wait for Nigeria to disintegrate, or am I the only one who feels like that? I know I'm not the only one checking nairaland's politics section anticipating a "Nigeria breaks up" thread, I think that's the only thing keeping this section alive.

I think it's interesting to note that the Obi of Onitsha and his entourage are dressed exactly the same as the Eze Nri, feathers and all. You will not see any of the 'new' Eze dressed like this.

It's not as different as other Igbo dialects, that's why I said "not too different" not 'not different at all'. If you learn central Igbo you're not going to be completely alien to people that speak Owerri Igbo. Of course central Igbo is different to every authentic Igbo dialect; even if I told people from Umuahia that Central Igbo is similar to their dialect, they'd disagree despite the fact that part of Central Igbo is based on their dialect.

1. What about Owerri? (don't laugh) I heard a man who called himself the Eze Owerri on NTA saying that his lineage goes back to the 17th century or something like that. If anyone knows about that please reply.

I thought the first Eze Nri (Eze Nri Ifikuanim) ascended in the 1040's?

Most of us know that during the British reign of Igboland many aspects of the Igbo culture had been bastardised, corrupted and even completely eradicated. One major aspect of the destruction of the social, political and even religious fabric of Igboland was the introduction of the Warrant chiefs, masking as 'Igwe' (which just means 'his highness' by the way) or 'Eze'. Before this there was authentic royalty and this is what this thread seeks to highlight.

Who and where are the authentic monarch's of Igboland, and how is their authenticity proven? Hundreds of villages boast of 'eze' or 'igwe' yet none of these heads can trace their lineage (which they probably don't have because the titles are bought) past Fredrick Lugard.

If you know of the living authentic kings (or queens if there were/are any) of Igboland, list them here and give a short biography (if you can).
