Jonathan ready for debate with APC candidate – PDP
Posted by: Gbade Ogunwale, Assistant Editor, Abuja

President Goodluck Jonathan is ready for public debate with any aspirant that emerges as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh , stated this at a press conference at the party’s Abuja national secretariat on Tuesday.
He said the debate will focus on a wide range of issues affecting the country, adding that the President would be ready for the APC candidate after the ratification of his candidacy on Thursday.
The party spokesman said 3,073 delegates are expected to participate in the PDP convention where the President’s sole candidacy is expected to be sealed.
Metuh said: “As a party, we are going into the conduct of our presidential primaries, in particular, with great excitement, knowing very well that we are keeping an appointment with the destiny of our nation as embodied by Dr. Goodluck Jonathan who is both President of our nation and candidate of our party on the occasion of our presidential primaries at the Eagle Square.
“The PDP is rest assured that we have a very good product to sell to Nigerians. We are confident that President Jonathan, as our candidate, is primed to win the 2015 presidential election based on his popularity deriving from his forthrightness, humility and steadfastness to the Nigerian project, coupled with his record of verifiable achievements.
“We are today serving notice to the opposition APC to expect a crushing defeat at the polls. In view of our confidence, preparedness and the popularity of our candidate, we declare that the APC can put forth its two frontline aspirants in one bunch, namely Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as joint presidential candidates with their collective credentials and followership to face our candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan.
“The President has been able to stabilize the polity by his pan Nigerian outlook and approach to governance. The stability of our nation has strengthened national unity. Today, he has been able to give every geo- political zone a sense of belonging in terms of infrastructure development, economic and human capital empowerment.”
The party said no other leader had united the Nigerian people more than Jonathan had done, adding that the President has continued to act on the side of caution in the counter insurgency campaign.
“President Jonathan has stabilise the economy. The rebasing of the economy has made Nigeria the largest economy in Africa and 26th in the world.
“For us in the PDP, it is neither a matter of conjecture nor propaganda; we are certain that with the grassroots support and the love he enjoys from Nigerians across board, President Jonathan will secure an emphatic victory at the polls.”[/

Uduaghan Disgraced As Okowa Wins Delta PDP Gov. Primary

Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan was on Monday disgraced as the people of Delta State overwhelmingly voted for Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa as the Peoples‎ Democratic Party governorship primary in the state.

Uduaghan had initially supported Tony Obuh but later changed camp in favor of David Edevbie. Edevbie was also James Ibori's preferred candidate from his UK jail. Edevbie participated in the looting of Delta state during Ibori's tenure, in which he served as commissioner of finance. He is wanted in the UK in connection with Ibori's theft of over £200million from the coffers of Delta state.

His rejection in the party primaries should be seen as rejection of Ibori's remote control of Delta politics from his jailhouse in the UK.

There was wild jubilation in Asaba and other parts of Delta state Monday, following the declaration of Dr. Okowa as the PDP flag bearer for the 2015 governorship election.

Okowa who is Nigerian Senate committee chairman on Health, garnered 406 votes to beat Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan's last minute candidate, Mr. Edevbie, who received 299 votes, followed by Mr. Victor Ochei who polled 185. Uduaghan's earlier anointed candidate, Mr. Tony Obuh, scored 5 and Mr. Ndidi Elumelu received 50.

Twenty five aspirants contested in the governorship primaries.

Ondo Civil Servants Threaten Showdown With Mimiko’s Government Over Unpaid Salary

Civil servants in Ondo State have threatened to strike by the end of closing hours on Monday if the state government still refuses to pay them three months of outstanding salary.

Mr. Adeleye addressing workers in the state over the planned strike.
Sahara Reporters
The workers, who converged at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry block of the government office in Akure, the state capital, said they had had enough with the state government's “empty promises.” They also condemned the Governor of the state, Olusegun Mimiko, for politicking and running daily to Abuja, without minding if civil servants in the state were paid.

Adeleye and the workers
Sahara Reporters
SaharaReporters gathered that the workers were owned outstanding salaries of three months-September, October, and November.

Teachers in public schools of the state have also expressed anger over going unpaid for four months.

Addressing the workers, the State Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC), Oluwole Adeleye, said members were ready for a showdown with the government Tuesday since all efforts to get its attention have failed.

Mr. Adeleye revealed that when the council met with the state government on behalf of the workers in August they were told that the state was facing serious financial problems as a result of dwindling resources.

“The government called us in August [to say] that the state was facing dwindling resources and that the allocation went down and we should bear with them. We told them we shall continue to bear with them [but later] realized they were playing games with us,” he said.

“If by the close of work on Monday we don’t receive our salaries we will have no choice than to go on strike to press home our demand. The demands are legitimate. Its our salary, not a privilege."

He vowed to lead a massive protest in the state if the government took their threats as “empty statements."

An attempt by Buruji Kashamu, a close associate of President Goodluck Jonathan, to stop the publication of a three-volume book by former President Obasanjo, appears to have failed as SaharaReporters can confirm that the book has gone into circulation. A source close to Mr. Obasanjo confirmed to SaharaReporters late last night that copies of the former president’s exhaustive autobiography were already available to buyers in print form. The source that the book would soon be available in an electronic version that is beyond the jurisdiction of Nigerian courts.

SaharaReporters has already obtained and read sections of the book scheduled for formal launch in Nigeria in a few days.

The book, whose three volumes chronicle the life of the controversial former president from birth till this year, aroused political interest after SaharaReporters exclusively reported that Mr. Obasanjo devotes significant pages to paint an unflattering portrait of President Jonathan. We reported that the book characterizes Mr. Jonathan as selfish, weak-willed, callous and incapable of rising to the challenges of running a complex country like Nigeria. Mr. Obasanjo also accuses the president of surrounding himself with aides and political associates with corrupt tendencies.

Mr. Obasanjo’s book dedicates several parts in the book to point out some of Mr. Jonathan’s actions and inactions he considers ill-advised or disastrous for Nigeria. He depicts Mr. Jonathan as a man who has not only destroyed the Peoples Democratic Party but also led Nigeria in dire straights.

The book focuses on several instances of policy somersaults by Mr. Jonathan as well as deliberate actions by the incumbent president that have imperiled Nigeria’s progress in the opinion of Mr. Jonathan.

An Abuja-based lawyer and critic of Mr. Obasanjo accused the former president
of seeking to use the book to earn cheap popularity, adding that Mr. Obasanjo cannot get away from responsibility for “sponsoring President Jonathan’s rise to political prominence and the Presidency.”

“We have been saying it from day one that President Goodluck Jonathan does not have the qualities to become a true leader, but we cannot forget that Chief Obasanjo singlehandedly put him and the late President Umaru Yar’Adua in office,” the lawyer said.

Mr. Obasanjo’s book also castigates former President Umaru Yar’Adua, former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, and former Governor James Ibori of Delta State, Bukola Saraki, among other political foes.

In the book, the former president also makes an incredible claim that he was never interested in pursuing a third term while in office.

“That is a clear lie,” said Mr. Obasanjo’s critic. “To even deny what is so obvious to every Nigerian shows that Chief Obasanjo has little regard for the truth.”

Qur’an is Book of Peace: Pope

CAIRO – Concluding his three-day visit to Turkey, Pope Francis has confirmed that Islam is a religion of peace, rejecting rants targeting Muslims over acts committed by a minority group.

“The Qur’an is a book of peace. It is a prophetic book of peace,” Pope Francis said, The Washington Post reported on Monday, December 1.

During his visit to Turkey, the Argentine Pope met President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and the head of Turkey's religious affairs directorate, Mehmet Gormez.

He also visited the Blue Mosque after a short tour of Aya Sofya, during which he offered prayers alongside the Turkish Mufti of Istanbul. The Pope asserted that was wrong for anyone to react to terrorism by being "enraged" against Islam.

“You just can’t say that, just as you can’t say all Christians are fundamentalists,” he said.

“We have our share of [fundamentalists]. All religions have these little groups.”

Pope Francis called on Muslim leaders to issue a global condemnation of terrorism to help break the stereotype that Islam and violence are innately linked. The suggestion was first made during the Pope’s meeting with the Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan last Friday.

“I told the president that it would be beautiful if all Islamic leaders, whether they are political, religious or academic leaders, would speak out clearly and condemn this because this would help the majority of Muslim people,” he told reporters aboard the flight, the Independent reported.

The 77-year-old Pontiff’s visit is the fourth by a Pope to Turkey.

In November 2006, Pope Benedict XVI visited Turkey and prayed at Istanbul's Blue Mosque as well.

A number of Muslim leaders around the world have overtly condemned the Islamic State, issuing strong-worded statements to deny any relation between Islam and the militant group. Two months ago, Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, the highest seat of religious learning in the Sunni world, has condemned ISIL, accusing it of serving a “Zionist” plot to “destroy the Arab World”.

Earlier, Saudi Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh condemned Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State jihadists as “enemy number one” of Islam, urging urged Muslims to take up arms against the militant group’s members as aggressors who abuse people’s lives, possessions and honor.

The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) has dismissed ISIL announcement of forming a “caliphate” in areas they control in Iraq and Syria, saying it lacked any Islamic or realistic aspects.

PoliticsAli-modu Sherff In Secret Visit To Arms-laden Chad-bound Plane Detaind In Nigeri by farem(op): 7:06pm On Dec 07, 2014
Ex-Borno Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, In Secret Visit To Arms-laden Chad-bound Plane Detained In Nigeria

A former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, widely accused of sponsoring Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria, may be lobbying for the release of the Chad-bound cargo aircraft confiscated in Kano for transporting large consignment of military hardware, PREMIUM TIMES can report today.

Sources at the Aminu Kano International Airport, where the plane is currently detained, said Mr. Sheriff visited the Kano airport at about 10 p.m. on Saturday and held discussions with some officials on the possibility of releasing the aircraft.

Our sources said on arriving the airport, officials allowed the former governor a secret tour of the aircraft, during which he inspected its consignments.

“I was there and I saw him and two airport security officials accompanying him to inspect the plane. I saw the black helicopters and two bullet proof SUVs,” one of our sources said. “I also heard him (Mr. Sheriff) say verbal directive had been given from Abuja for the release of the plane but that authorities of the airport were insisting on written directive.”

Mr. Sheriff could not be reached to comment for this story. His known mobile telephone number was switched off for several hours that PREMIUM TIMES called Saturday. He is also yet to reply a text message sent to him.

The Manager of the Kano Airport, a Mr. Adamu, told PREMIUM TIMES he is in Abuja and was therefore unaware of Mr. Sheriff’s tour of the detained aircraft.

The former Borno governor is a close ally of both the Nigerian president, and the government of Chad – the plane’s final destination.

A 2010 Intelligence report by a Nigerian security agency suggested that Mr. Sheriff was personally involved in the recruitment, training and dispatch of Boko Haram fighters, under the full cover of Idris Deby, the Chadian president.

Chad is Nigeria’s neighbour. Laying on Nigeria’s northeast shoulder, and sharing long distances of unregulated borders, it is considered a window to safety for Boko Haram fighters.

An Australian negotiator engaged by the Nigerian government to bring Boko Haram insurgents to the negotiation table, Stephen Davies, also spoke of how the insurgents named Mr. Sheriff as one of their sponsors during his conversations with the terrorists.

Airport officials told PREMIUM TIMES Mr. Sheriff’s verbal pressures to let the plane go was turned down. He was asked to get written permission from “ogas at the top” – authority high up in Abuja – our sources said.

After inspecting the plane and holding discussions with local officials, Mr. Sheriff reportedly left for Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, in a private jet at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Security operatives at the Kano Airport had seized the plane when it landed at the facility at about 2a.m. Saturday as a result of technical problems. Crew members of the airplane were immediately detained while investigations continued, officials said.

“Security has since been beefed up at the airport in order to ensure proper investigation,” the officials added. The General Manager, Communications, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Yakubu Datti, confirmed the seizure of the plane.

He said the pilot sought permission to land at the airport after the plane developed problems. “The plane had a technical problem and the pilot sought (for) permission to land at the airport’’, he said.

Mr. Datti said security agencies had since commenced investigation into the matter. Security sources told PREMIUM TIMES the plane was travelling to N’djamena, the capital of Chad. PR Nigeria, an agency known for distributing press statements on behalf of the Nigerian military, later circulated a statement saying the aircraft contained “a chopper tucked in it”.

“… Intense investigation is ongoing including using diplomatic means to unravel the mission of the aircraft, its origin and destination,” the statement said. This is the third time since 2009 that planes loaded with arms would be arrested in Kano, our correspondent says. The detained planes were later released after investigations.

The destination of the latest aircraft has however raised concerns amid increasing worries in Nigeria over Chad’s alleged role in the Boko Haram insurgency plaguing Nigeria’s northeast. The plane and its consignment was initially thought to originate from Russia but the Russian Embassy in Abuja issued a statement denying ownership of the AH-124-100 heavy military transport aircraft.

Air cargo experts describe it as one of the biggest serial and strategic heavy lifters in the world. It is intended for the transportation of heavy and oversized cargo and various special-purpose vehicles. Although in commercial use too, the Russian military is beloved to own 14 of the AN-124-100 version of the jumbo cargo jet, manufactured by the Russian Antonov.

APC primary fallout: Tinubu angry with Fashol

DECEMBER 6, 2014 BY SESAN OLUFOWOBI, DAYO OKETOLA, FISAYO FALODI, KUNLE FALAYI, ENIOLA AKINKUOTU AND ERIC DUMO

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is angry with the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, as a result of the latter’s conduct before and during the just concluded APC governorship primary in the state.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that Tinubu became angry when Fashola initially told him that he did not have a particular candidate for the APC primary only to emerge much later with a former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Mr. Olasupo Shahore, as his (the governor) preferred candidate.

Akinwunmi Ambode, who defeated 12 other aspirants, had remained in public discourse as Tinubu’s favourite.

The other aspirants are Sasore; Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji; a former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Leke Pitan; an incumbent Commissioner for Works, Obafemi Hamzat; a former aide to Tinubu, Mr. Tayo Ayinde; Mr. Adekunle Disu, Mr. Wahab Tokunbo, Mr. Olanrewaju Ope and a former Commissioner for Rural Affairs, Mr. Tola Kasali.

Ambode polled 3,735 votes to emerge the party’s candidate for the February 2015 election. Hamzat, who came a distant second, polled 1,201 votes.

But a source close to the APC chieftain told one of our correspondents that the former governor was not only angry with Fashola, but was “disappointed in him.”He said anger was a mild word to use in the situation, noting that the governor had a right to have a candidate. He said all Tinubu wanted was to know his mind.

The source said, “But Fashola kept Tinubu guessing. He told him he did not have a candidate. Though there were signs and media reports that he was backing someone, but Tinubu could not be relying on media reports about the governor in a situation like this.

“In fact, Asiwaju told him that he had a candidate and sought the governor’s support for him. The governor said he had no candidate only for him to emerge with a candidate in the last minute. Asiwaju did not know where the governor stood.

“I believe with the outcome of the primary, the governor will have enough time to reflect.”

Saturday Punch also learnt that there was already a crack in the wall of the camp of disgruntled governorship aspirants as their voices were no longer united on their next action.

It was learnt that some of the defeated aspirants were already working on how to get themselves back into Tinubu’s good books.

The aspirants had earlier scheduled a press conference in Lagos on Thursday night immediately after the end of voting at the primary but the press conference was called off and rescheduled for Friday.

The conference was to hold at Protea Hotel, Lagos. But the meeting was called off again as none of the aspirants showed up as journalists waited for hours in vain on Friday.

But party sources said many of the aspirants had begun to court Tinubu afresh following their defeat at the primary.

One of the sources said, “There is nothing like association of aspirants. Now that a candidate has emerged, everybody is trying to realign. The primary has succeeded in separating the boys from the men.

“One of the governorship aspirants, Obafemi Hamzat, has to separate himself from the boys because he cannot be seen to be championing the cause of the boys,” the source said.

On legal option previously being considered by aggrieved aspirants, he said, “There is no locus standi for any of them to go to court. The party approved of the Modified Delegate System that Lagos used. It is a party decision and there is no way anyone can fault the system. And if there is any legal issue, they have to slug it out with the party at the national level.”

On threat to defect to Labour Party, another source said, “Where is Labour Party now. The only governor that the party had has defected to PDP, so what is Labour Party. So, what is remaining of the Labour Party?”

Saturday PUNCH learnt that Hamzat had congratulated the winner of the primary.

But analysts believe despite the victory of Tinubu’s candidate, the fact that he could be keenly challenged by his closest aides showed that his political empire might not be as cohesive as it was.

A close aide of the former governor said, “The ex-governor wielded so much power in the past. In the past, none of his closest associates would have dared to challenge him, they would have dropped their ambition. But even his closest boys insisted on running.

“But then, it is a positive development because it brought transparency into the whole system. He didn’t use his power to suppress anybody. That’s the positive side.”

Asked to comment on Tinubu’s disposition to Fashola and the purported moves by disgruntled aspirants to return to Tinubu’s good books, his aide, Sunday Dare, said the aspirants were still members of the party even as aspirants.

“They demanded a transparent process and it was granted,” Dare said.

He said though none of the aspirants had got in touch with him seeking to meet his boss, he noted that they all had access to his boss and could reach him without going through him.

Also, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Hakeem Bello, said there was no friction between the governor and Tinubu. But those who say so buttressed their argument with the fact that Fashola was absent from the primary.

“Where did you hear that? There is no problem at all. The governor went to bury his uncle yesterday (Thursday).”

However, a source told our correspondent that the issue on ground was the fact that Fashola was unwilling to fund the campaign of a candidate he considered as an enemy.

“Some elders of the party have, however, called the governor and Tinubu in a bid to resolve the issue. It is the outcome of the peace meeting that will determine what will happen next,” the source added.

It was learnt that Fashola was not happy with the conduct of the primary.

One of the aspirants, who asked not to be named, had said, “The way things are going, there may be mass defection from the APC as even the governor may dump the party soon. Tinubu has emasculated all of us, including Fashola who is not even being given a say. “We planned to shun the primary in protest after the party refused to postpone it following our request but we all agreed to come so that we can observe it properly in case the matter is taken to court.

“In any case, the dubious manner in which the state congress was carried out is already at a Federal High Court so there is a high possibility that the result of this event will be nullified.

“Only Tinubu has the list of the delegates and most of us were not able to reach out to them. This is most unfortunate.”

Delivering his acceptance speech, Ambode, praised the “orderliness and transparency of the process” that produced him.

He said, “It is with a deep sense of gratitude and humility that I accept this ticket to run as the candidate of our great party, in the 2015 gubernatorial elections. The victory was made possible by you the people.

“The spirit of sportsmanship devoid of bitterness that characterises this process signposts a better future for our democracy.

“Our party has demonstrated to all that we are a party of great minds and democratic ideals.

“We have a legacy to build upon. We have a challenge to meet and speedily too. The responsibility belongs to all of us. Let us put aside the disappointment of yesterday and embrace the opportunity of today. Not forgetting that the future begins today. We must never forget that the future of Lagos is bigger than the summation of our ambitions.

“After this victory, we must move quickly to retain the party APC in the column of the progressives by returning the APC to power in Lagos. On my part, I promise never to waiver or fail. I promise to energise and mobilise our teeming supporters in the next phase of this struggle.”

Ambode will be presented with the party’s flag on December 10 during the APC national convention in Lagos.

One of the governorship aspirants, Olanrewaju Ope, had congratulated Ambode on his victory in the primary.

Ope said, “Congratulations, my dear brother. The primary and the campaign preceding the election have been an interesting family affair. There is therefore no victor and no loser.

“Our great party has won and the loud voice of the delegates has been heard. You can count on me and my campaign organisation to join in the battle ahead.”

He, however, urged other aspirants to work together for the success of the party in next year’s general elections.

Saturday PUNCH, however, learnt that the remaining 11 aspirants had yet to congratulate Ambode as of Friday night when this report was filed. Pitan and Tokunbo were said to have rejected the result of the primary.

Seven of the defeated aspirants – Wahab Tokunbo, Leke Pitan, Obafemi Hamzat, Tola Kasali, Ganiyu Solomon, Adekunle Disu and Tokunbo Agbesewa – had met at Protea Hotel, Maryland, Lagos, on Friday where they hoped to address a press conference.

However, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, who was the last to arrive the venue, called some journalists aside and told them that the event had been cancelled.

It was learnt that Ikuforiji prevailed upon most of his colleagues not to fight Tinubu as the consequences of such could be far-reaching.

Still, Tokunbo blasted the APC for organising what he described as a “sham primary.”

He said, “If the APC, a party in the fore front of the change movement could subject itself to a shoddy, suspicious preparation, what then is the moral justification for blaming INEC regarding the flop in the voter registration and PVC distribution in Lagos State?”

Pitan has also rejected the result of the primary, describing it as not free and fair.

Pitan’s media aide, Mr. Adebiyi Afolayan, said his principal would not congratulate Ambode as the primary was a sham.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, who spoke on behalf of the governor said, “There is no problem between Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the governor. The two of them are working together in driving Lagos forward, so, there is no reason to fight.

“We all belong to the same party and that’s why Lagos keeps running. It’s one house, one family, one voice, altogether driving Lagos forward.

“We had our governorship congress on Thursday, it went well, all the aspirants were together and they had a warm congress.”

While explaining why the governor had yet to congratulate the winner of the primary election, Ibirogba said, “Not congratulating him does not mean we did not support him. It was a rancour-free primary. We have been able to tell the world that the party has internal democracy after all.”

APC primary fallout: Tinubu angry with Fashola

JONATHAN AND ABACHA'S SON IN A CLOSE-DOOR MEETING

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday met behind closed-door with Mohammed Abacha, a son of a former Head of State, the late Gen. Sani Abacha, on issues suspected to bother on the forthcoming primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Abacha is a governorship aspirant of the PDP in Kano State.

Governorship primaries of the party hold nationwide on Monday.

At the end of the meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the aspirant told State House correspondents that he was confident that the PDP would recover its stolen mandate from the All Progressives Congress in the state during the 2015 general elections.

He said he was hopeful that he would clinch the party’s ticket.

“We are hopeful; I wouldn’t want to say too much. I said it before that it was a PDP state; it was a PDP ticket. It was taken or converted or even stolen; whatever you want to call it, so be it. The chances of the PDP are still bright,” he said.

It will be recalled that the Federal Government had in June withdrawn the N446.3bn theft charges instituted against the younger Abacha.

The government had preferred the nine counts of stealing against him in February 2014.

The prosecution accused Abacha of unlawfully receiving about N446.3bn allegedly stolen from government’s coffers between 1995 and 1998.

Government later asked Justice Mamman Kolo of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, to strike out the charges on the grounds of “fresh facts” that just emerged concerning the case.

The government’s decision attracted criticisms from individuals and groups.

Those who flayed the action included prominent Lagos lawyers – Femi Falana, Jiti Ogunye, Fred Agbaje and Femi Aborisade – as well as the Chairman of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, Mr. Debo Adeniran; and his Civil Society Network Against Corruption counterpart, Mr. Lanre Suraj.

While some of the lawyers argued that the government action had serious negative implications on the country’s anti-graft campaign, Adeniran and Suraj said it had a political undertone.

Errors That Are Still Taught In Nigerian Schools Today By Chinedu Rylan

The title may be a little bit misleading, because this problem is not only limited to Nigerian schools. It’s a worldwide phenomenon occasioned by teachers, lecturers and instructors who make no effort to update themselves and add to what they already know. These lies – at least some of them – were facts at some point in time, but things have since moved on. Truths become lies as new discoveries are being made.
Another classroom at the primary school
Alagoa Morris
Here are 16 lies that are still dished out the world over even as you read this:

1. There are six classes of food: I was taught – and I know most of you were taught – that there are 6 classes of food, namely, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, fats and oil, minerals and water. It is no longer the case. Officially, there are now SEVEN classes of food: proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins (or vegetables), fibers, fats and oil, minerals and water. Fiber is derived from plants and it was initially left out by nutritionists because it seemingly does not add any nutrient to the body. What fiber does that it alters the way our gastrointestinal tract absorbs food. Fiber itself is indigestible; it is broken down in the large intestine not by the body’s digestive system, but by the trillions of bacteria that live there.

2. There are nine planets in the solar system:
Astronomers are regularly discovering new planets all over the universe. However, the number of planets in our own solar system has been reduced from nine to eight. This is due to the declassification of Pluto as a planet. Pluto was officially downgraded by astronomers at the 26th General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union which was held in Prague, Czech Republic, in 2006. It is now a dwarf planet. Astronomers found out that it is merely a huge ball of ice and rock orbiting the Sun in an area known as the Kuiper Belt. The Kuiper Belt is located beyond the planet Neptune (which is now the farthest planet in the solar system) and it contains over 70,000 icy objects similar to Pluto. Pluto happens to be one of the biggest of these icy objects, but it’s not the biggest. The biggest is Eris. Eris, a dwarf planet, is the largest object in the Kuiper Belt. It’s about 25% more massive than Pluto.

3.There are four oceans:
That was until the year 2000 when the International Hydrographic Organization concluded that a distinct body of sea that completely surrounds the continent Antarctica will be the Earth’s fifth ocean. The exact geographic coordinates of the salty water are yet to be agreed upon, but most sources will tell you that it lies to the south of Australia, New Zealand and the tip of the South American continent.

4. There are three states of matter: There are several states of matter, in fact. According to physicists, in addition to solid, liquid and gaseous, plasma can be observed in everyday life. Actually, scientists claim that plasma is the most abundant form of matter in the universe, because most of the stars, including our own Sun, are in a plasma state. Other states of matter include the neutron-degenerate matter, Bose-Einstein condensates, liquid crystals, superfluids, quark-gluon plasmas, quantum hall state, supersolid, string-net liquid, superglass and dark matter. But these forms of matter are very rare and some of them have not been observed, but are believed to exist.
Humans have only five senses: It turns out that sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste are not the only sensory responses human beings exhibit. Human sensory receptors can also respond to pain (nociception), changes in temperature (thermoception), changes in balance (equilibrioception), position (proprioception), magnetic direction (magnetoception) and the passage of time (chronoception).

4. Humans evolved from apes: This is a great lie and misconception that has been here with us since the day Charles Darwin published his controversial “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life.” According to this well-known biological framework, human beings and the modern-day apes evolved from a single, now-extinct ancestor. As time passed by, these ancestors of ours began to evolve differently based on climatic, nutritional, geographical and social changes.

5.Mount Everest is the highest place on earth: Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world quite alright, but it’s not the part of the world that is closest to outer space. Here how it works: the Earth does not have a perfectly round structure like the world globes you’ll find in most schools. Geographers call this anomaly an oblate spheroid, which means that the earth has a bulge towards the equator. As a result of this bulge, places close to the equator are “further out” from the centre of the Earth than places that are far away from it. Ethiopia, Kenya, Gabon, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries that straddle the equator are “further out” from the centre of the Earth and are closer to outer space than countries that lie towards the north and south poles, such as the Scandinavian countries, Russia, Canada, the United States and Greenland. Going by this phenomenon, the title of the highest spot on Earth belongs to a mountain in Ecuador that you may not have heard of. The rather unspectacular Mount Chimborazo in the Andes of South America has been identified as the highest point on earth and its closest part to outer space. The peak is in reality 1.5 miles “higher up” than Mount Everest because it sits atop the Earth’s bulge, though it only measures 20,564 ft from sea level, while Everest measures 29,029 ft. But for the sake of clarity, Everest is still the highest mountain in the world from sea level, but if two objects are descending from outer space from the same distance and at the same pace to the two mountains, the one coming down to Chimborazo will land before the one descending to Everest. Everest is actually the fifth furthest place from the centre of the Earth; Huascaran in Peru, Cotopaxi in Ecuador, Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Chimborazo are all further.

6.Babies are born tabula rasa: For ages, arguments and counterarguments have been made by psychologists and philosophers over whether human beings are born with the so-called blank slate. But thanks to advancements in genetic studies, most of us are now in the know that humans transfer some of their characteristics (known as traits) to their offspring. These traits go a long way in determining how the offspring will react when put in certain situations and subjected to certain conditions.

7. Different parts of the tongue detect different flavours:
Even in my university days, I was taught by professors that different parts of the human tongue are specialized for detecting different tastes. The so-called tongue map balkanized our taste organ into areas responsible for detecting sweetness, bitterness, saltiness, sourness and unami. Per contra, it turns out that most taste buds on the tongue and in other areas of the mouth can detect any taste irrespective of their position.

8.Europeans brought Christianity to Africa and Christianity is a Western Religion: Christianity is the world’s largest religion and it originated from Asia in the geographical East. The movement that gave rise to Christianity was begun by Jesus Christ who was born over 2000 years ago in Bethlehem in present-day Palestine. The followers of the teachings of Christ were first called “Christians” in the town of Antioch which is now a historical site in present-day Turkey. Antioch lies on the eastern part of Turkey which is in Asia. It is not clear when Christianity was brought to either Europe or Africa. It is recorded in the Bible that Christ was taken to Egypt as an infant by Mary and Joseph who were fleeing from Herod the Great during the Massacre of the Innocents. However, Christ’s ministry began few years before He was crucified. It is not recorded if He went to Africa or Europe during His ministry. What is clear, though, is that one of His apostles, Mark, established the first church in Africa twelve years after the crucifixion, known as the Church of Alexandria.

Some years before that, another apostle, Philip, was recorded in the Acts of the Apostles to have baptized an Ethiopian eunuch on the road leading to Gaza from Jerusalem. The Acts, however, did not tell us where the eunuch went afterwards or if he spread the message in Ethiopia. A church was established in Ethiopia some years after the Church of Alexandria in Egypt and it is still in existence today. Most present-day Ethiopians are Christians and their own form of Christianity is not linked to the ones spread by the Europeans.

[b9.]The Bible, the Church and People in the Middle Ages believed that the Earth was flat: According to the notion – which has been erroneously published in some textbooks – Christians in the Middle Ages believed that the Earth was flat. The notion has it that it was not until Genoese explorer, Christopher Columbus, had “sailed round the world” without falling off the Earth's presumed edge (and “discovered” what turned out to be North America) that the Church leaders came to the realization that the Earth is indeed spherical and not flat. Contrary to this view, Greek astronomers and pretty much everyone else then knew long before the advent of Christianity that the Earth was spherical. The early Greeks were renowned astronomers who made predictions that are still correct today. The Bible also alluded to a spherical Earth. Isaiah 40:22 says that “He (God) sits enthroned above the circle of the earth.” It was only a handful of scholars in the Middle Ages who claimed to be representing the whole Church that believed in a flat Earth.

10.Michael Faraday invented electricity:
No-one actually invented electricity. The form of energy now known as electricity has been there since the beginning of the world. Electricity occurs in nature. A lightning bolt, for example, releases electricity.

11. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb: While it is not clear who invented light bulbs, they were being used as electric lights more than 50 years before Thomas Edison patented his famous invention in 1879. What Edison invented was the world's first commercially viable incandescent light bulb.

12. Diabetes is caused by sugar: Sugar doesn’t directly cause diabetes, but if you consume too much sugar, you are likely going to get diabetes. What sugar does is that it increases the quantity of calories in the body. Too many calories in the body lead to weight gain which significantly increases a person’s likelihood to develop type 2 diabetes.

13. The Whites kidnapped Africans and sold them into slavery: This is not entirely true. Most slaves that were shipped into the Americas to work in plantations were actually captured by their own kinsmen and sold to the Europeans. When it all began, the Europeans were the ones doing the kidnapping. They organized abduction raids to capture slaves from different communities. But in no time, they realized that it was too dangerous a venture for them since they were not familiar with the inland terrains. What did they do? They subsequently found people that will do their dirty jobs. Then came the local chiefs and the greedy merchants. They were given this responsibility in exchange for money and other privileges. At the height of the slave trade, this practice became a lucrative business along Nigeria’s Atlantic coast.

14. The United States of America is the world’s largest economy: That was until 2014; October to be precise. The US is still the richest country when measured by reserves and collective national wealth, but it no longer has the world's largest economy, according to the International Monetary Fund’s Gross Domestic Product Purchasing Power Parity (GDP PPP) estimates. China is now the world’s largest economy. In the IMF's indices, China’s GDP is now worth $17.63 trillion compared with the US’ $17.55 trillion. The IMF makes its calculations based on purchasing power parity, a measure which is preferred by most economists. Purchasing power parity adjusts a country’s GDP for inflation based on the fact that the prices of goods and services as well as cost of living vary from country to country. When not measured based on purchasing power parity, the United States is still the world’s number one economy with a GDP of $16.8 trillion compared to China’s $10.3 trillion.

Lagos 2015: PDP members sue Obanikoro for forgery, dual citizenship
By Daily Post Staff on November 16, 2014@dailypostngr

Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State have asked an Ikeja High Court to stop the 2015 governorship ambition of a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Olatunde Mohammed Obanikoro, over an alleged falsification of age.

Besides, they asked the court to determine Obanikoro’s citizenship having voluntarily acquired the citizenship of the United States of America without renouncing his allegiance to Nigeria, the country of his birth.

Specifically, Michael Babatunde Ogun, Suleiman Olayinka Saheed and Wasiu Adeniyi Odusan, all PDP members in the state and initiator of the suit, are asking the court to determine Obanikoro’s eligibility to participate in the party’s governorship primaries fixed for December 8, “having previously presented a forged birth certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) contrary to Section 182(1) (J) of the 1999 Constitution”.

They are also asking the court for a perpetual injunction barring Obanikoro from accepting what they called “the PDP’s candidacy or nomination” to contest the next year’s governorship election in Lagos State until the matter was favourably disposed of.

Sued alongside Obanikoro are the INEC and the PDP.

In the suit initiated on their behalf by their lawyer, Wahab Kunle Shittu, Ogun, Saheed and Odusan are asking the court to halt Obanikoro’s governorship ambition until the following questions among others, were resolved:

“Whether upon a proper construction and interpretation of Section 182(1) (a) (j) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the 1st responded (Obanikoro) having voluntarily acquired the citizenship of the United States of America in addition to the citizenship of Nigeria, is eligible to present himself for nomination as a candidate in the governorship primaries of the 3rd respondent (PDP) or any other registered political party for the purpose of contesting on the platform of the PDP or any other political party registered in Nigeria for the purpose of contesting the 2015 elections in Lagos State or any subsequent elections in Nigeria.

“Whether upon a proper construction of Section 182 (1) (j) of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999 as amended, the 1st respondent having previously presented a forged birth certificate to INEC in the April 2007 general elections for the office of Governor of Lagos State is eligible to present himself for nomination as a candidate in the governorship primaries of the 3rd respondent or any other registered political party for the purpose of contesting on the platform of the PDP or any other political party registered in Nigeria for the purpose of contesting the 2015 elections in Lagos State or any subsequent elections in Nigeria.

“Whether upon a proper construction of Section 31 (2) (50 (6) and (cool of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, the applicants have locus standi to institute this present proceedings against the respondents and that the 1st respondent (Obanikoro) is not qualified to participate and or take part in the gubernatorial primary election of the PDP scheduled for the 8th of December 2014 or any other date for the selection of its candidate for the Lagos State Governorship elections scheduled to hold in 2015 or any other date.

“Whether having regards to Section 87 of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, paragraph 4 (a) of Part IV of the Electoral Guidelines for Primary Elections 2010 of the 3rd respondent, the 1st respondent is qualified to participate and or take part in the gubernatorial primary election of the 3rd respondent scheduled for the 8th of December.

“Whether upon a proper construction of Sections 10 (1), (j),(k), 49(2),50(1), 50 (2) of the Constitution of the 3rd respondent, t6he 1st respondent is eligible to present himself for nomination as a candidate in the governorship primaries of the PDP for the purpose of vying for nomination as a gubernatorial candidate of the 3rd respondent with a view to contesting the 2015 elections.

“A declaration that based on the dictates of paragraph 4(a) of Part IV of the Electoral Guidelines for Primary Elections 2014 of the 3rd respondent and the antecedents of the 1st respondent particularized in the applicants’ affidavit in support of the originating summons, the 1st respondent is not eligible to participate and or take part in the gubernatorial primary election of the 3rd respondent scheduled for the 8th of December.

“An order of perpetual injunction restraining the 1st respondent from participating in the governorship primaries of the 3rd respondent or in the alternative any of the registered political parties in Nigeria”.

In an affidavit differently deposed to by Ogun, Saheed and Odusan, they particularly asked the court restrain both the PDP and the INEC from nominating or accepting Obanikoro’s candidacy for ‘the purpose of the 2015 governorship elections in Lagos State or any subsequent elections in Nigeria.

For instance, Ogun, in his affidavit, said Obanikoro was not fit to vie for the 2015 gubernatorial primaries, hence he must be barred from participating in the December 8 primaries of the party.

He said: “Obanikoro deliberately declared falsely in answer to question 9 part B of the aforementioned affidavit when asked whether he had changed his nationality in the past and if so, what the nationality was, by answering “that is not applicable” when he knew that he had in actual fact acquired the citizenship of the United States of America as contained in his American Passport No.025317195 issued on June 16 1995.

“Also, Obanikoro deliberately falsified his date of birth and age as the 28th of July 1954 and 52 years respectively notwithstanding the fact that Obanikoro knew that his official Nigerian passport and his diplomatic passport No.F0004473 and D0002471 respectively show contrarily that his actual date of birth is the 28th of July 1960.

“His American Passport and application for admission to the Texas Southern University, Houston Texas including extracts from Obanikoro’s marriage records to one Jewel M. Weller in the Harris County 1982 Marriage Records support the assertion that Obanikoro’s actual date of birth is 28th July 1960 as opposed to false declaration of 28th July 1954.

“And that unless Obanikoro is perpetually restrained from participating in the scheduled governorship primaries of my party, the PDP which is to take place on the8th of December 2014, the interest of the applicants as stakeholders and the overriding interest of the PDP including the quality and character of the political space would be seriously endangered.”

No date has been fixed for hearing.

However, Obanikoro had several times addressed the twin issues, supported with documents
