AgricultureRe: Growing Maggot For Animal Feed in Pictures by FarmTech(mod): 8:13am On Feb 13, 2016
Just thinking – In a war situation, isn’t this a very good source of super cheap protein?

Much more practical details here: Growing Maggot for Animal Feed: My Little Experiment
AgricultureRe: Growing Maggot For Animal Feed in Pictures by FarmTech(mod): 8:13am On Feb 13, 2016
I’m looking forward to do this in a larger scale. Some people travel all the way to Songhai farm, Benin Republic to learn this among other things.
Now I’ve tried it and saw the harvest, I strongly believed it will be profitable. Fly is free and everywhere.

Then I spray it on a net to dry.

To process, I poured very hot water on them. This will kill every germs in it and makes it more digestible. I left if in the hot water for a while before draining.

Harvest was bountiful. It makes sense to do this large scale.

Place the maggot-filled substrate on the net. Spread it thinly so that they can’t hide under. Fear of light will make them to force themselves through the tiny holes in the net.

After the flies have finished laying their eggs. cover the bowl with something and place under a shaded area. Protect it from ants, lizards, chickens etc. I used chicken wire to cover them and finally cover with zinc. The chicken wire will prevent lizards and the zinc will stop chickens. I placed the growing bowls on a raised platform. The little kerosene I sprayed on the platform will stop ants. In few hours time you’ll see some small maggots. Leave them for 5 days before you harvest.

Harvesting
Spread net over a bowl (harvesting bowl).

AgricultureGrowing Maggot For Animal Feed in Pictures by FarmTech(mod):
With the high price of animal feed, growing maggots is beginning to make sense. Maggots come from flies. When flies lay eggs, the eggs pass through several stages before they turn into flies. One of the stages is the maggot stage.
You can use the maggot to feed fish, chickens and other animals. I’m targeting fish and chickens but I’ll be starting with chickens.

Growing The Maggots
To grow maggot, you need cheap inputs like manure, kitchen waste and sawdust or rice hull. I mixed rice hull with manure (my layers’ droppings) in a bowl (let’s call this growing bowl) and added just enough water to make it moist but not wet. I then mix thoroughly and placed some kitchen waste on this mixture to attract a lot of flies. You can use soup, fruits or anything that will attract a lot of flies. I used my dog’s leftover garri balls mixed with soup.

Christianity EtcMy Reply To: 5 Things To Avoid When Evangelizing/sharing The Gospel by FarmTech(op): 9:24pm On Feb 07, 2016
Hello Nairalanders, I’m writing this in reply to the post made here: https://www.nairaland.com/2917924/5-things-avoid-when-evangelizing. Most of the information there is misleading and will not help the cause of Christianity if we are to follow them. I’m not writing this to belittle the writer but to correct errors that may mislead a lot of people. Like the bible say: Iron sharpens iron so let’s share ideas.

1. He Said: Don’t call them “Unsaved”
I Say: Call a Spade a Spade and be polite: God expects us to preach His words undiluted, so you don’t have to worry if people find it offensive or not – as long as you speak the truth in love. The Israelites despised the messages of prophets like Isaiah and Jeremiah, the good prophets maintained the truth about Israel’s sins. They did not shied away from calling them “unsaved”.
Mark 6:12: When Jesus sent out the 12, they went out and preached that people should turn away from their sins. They weren’t afraid to offend anyone.

Acts 2:36: The Isrealites sinned by crucifying Christ. Peter didn’t hid this fact from them. He said: “All the people of Israel are to know that this Jesus that you crucified, is the one that God has made the Lord and Savior”.

Also read Acts 4:8-12.

2. He Said: Don’t try to change them
I say: God is the one that changes sinners, but He does it through people. So try your best to change sinners, acknowledging that it is not by your power.
New converts are baby Christians that feed on milk. They can’t understand the bible on their own and most of them are easily mislead by wolves in sheep clothing. They need a good bible teacher to put them through and tell them the do’s and don’ts of Christianity. One of the reasons why a “christian” lady will dress naked and still fool herself that she’s a Christian is because of wolves that have make her believe that God focus only on the heart.

Do’s and Don’ts: There are do’s and don’ts in Christianity and you must make them known to new converts. If he/she is a fornicator, a liar, or immodest in dressing or behavior, you have to tell him/her that these are don’ts in Christianity. Let’s look at some bible verses.

1 Cor 10:14: Paul told the Corinthians to keep away from idol worshipping. 1 Cor 5:9: He told them not to associate with immoral believers. 1

Cor 6: He told them that dispute between 2 Christians should be settled in the church and not before heathens.

3. He Said: Don’t Scare Them:
I Say: Just preach the undiluted word of God. Tell them that in as much as God is loving and merciful, He is also a consuming fire that will devour sinners. Tell them how much God hate sin and what will happen if they fail to repent. The first coming of Christ brought us grace, but the second coming will be BLOODY AND VIOLENT.

4. He Said: Don’t neglect their Ideas
I Say: Yes, you have to listen to them and find out why they think the way they do. However, with your knowledge of God’s words, you should be ready to “take every thought captive and make them obey Christ” – 2 Cor 10:5.

5. He Said: Don’t Debate with Them:
I say: He did not differentiate between constructive and destructive debate/argument. Some people can spend hours debating football or politics, but when it comes to the bible, they run. Act 19:8: “Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly for 3 months, ARGUING persuasively about the kingdom of God”. But when some started insulting his faith (destructive debate), Paul left them and focus only on the believers among them.

When a debate/argument is constructive, use it as a tool to draw people to Christ. You’ll run away from constructive debates mostly when you don’t have a sound knowledge of the bible or when there are comas in your life.

I hope this helps. Your comments are welcome.

In place of antibiotics, I use garlic, pawpaw leave, aloe vera, moringa leave nd guava leave. I grind them together sieve out the water and mix with the drinking water of my birds. Then soak the pulp in water and do same again the following day. I do this once a week, and they look agile and healthy. Got this info from this NL, I do broilers though.
..
Great idea. I like moringa but i don't have free access to it in my area. I'll plant some soon.

Thanks for all the comments. I nearly miss my own post! Sorry for that.

The reason why i ask is bc I'm constantly on the lookout for medicinal plants for farm animals. Plants we can use to reduce our reliance on antibiotics. Thanks dgitrader, the name is loofa and they say it can be used to treat malaria, jaundice etc. As for applicatn to animals, I dont know yet.

No you are the one missing the point. There cannot be a national paradigm shift in the current system of agric production if the government isnt involved. Anything short of that and you end up with an ordinary business venture that will benefit opportunists like you while the vast majority of farmers remain hoodwinked and worse of.
..
For now, I think this is a matter of how many farmers' life did u affect positively. Maybe when the govt see it wking they'll key in - if they like.

That's the imbalance I talk about. Why would everybody go and start producing onions at the same time? Just because that's the easiest period to produce. Processing food especially for vegetables is not as nutritious as eating it fresh. Most processed food are just garbage. For the amount of farmers in Nigeria, I don't think we should have excess of any product. At least for now. That's why I said I want to manage farmers. So that we can produce what is needed when it is needed. And put the rest of our energy in exportable products.
..
Well Processed foods including vegetables will retain most of their nutritive value. One of the best way to process vegetables is by drying them under shade or oven and then grinding to powder.

No the UK government has not taken children away for spanking. They have taken children away for abuse. When you beat children in a harmful way leaving marks all over their body.

You are allowed to Spank and punish but there is a difference between spanking and beating anyhow.

The reason the government step in is to avoid the many cases of children who have been caused harm or even death aka baby P.
..
It is a step by step thing. Very soon they might place a total ban. See http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/un-urges-uk-create-laws-banning-parents-hitting-their-children-1512470

Page 0 seemed to be full of antichrists. If u think christianity destroyed Africa, think again. Compare it to Africa's stupidity of killing of twins, tagging whatever they don't understand witch etc. Christianity have really helped us in many ways. However as the bible have always warned, there are Satans in the church, wolves in sheep clothings that made the church look bad.
..
Don't judge the church base on those pastors that worship wealth at the expense of gospel truth.
..
Spanking a child is biblical. To cut story short, read the strategy satan has used to destroy christianity in advanced countries. The link below will tell u why same sex marriage was legalized, why parents can no longer correct their children and many more. It was an organized plan: https://mobile.facebook.com/notes/pastor-david-ogbueli/the-10-point-plan-by-alice-bailey-and-the-new-world-order-for-the-destruction-of/10151669226247539/.

hello good morning
good farmers in the house. My name is latifah.i am a graduate with Bachelor's degree in microbiology.I'v had interest in agriculture especially poultry farming since my childhood. Now as the economy of Nigeria is..being self employed(farming especially)is the only solution to unemployment problems.
To cut the long story short,I ventured into broiler production already.God so good, its been going on great. No mortality at all in my broiler production farm, except for d turkeys I am rearing as well.
Now the problem I have is that I started late October 30th to be precise coz of fear of bird flu(rumour I guess).so, I cudnt sell them off for Xmas and new year coz dey avnt really grown very big.
Now, my fear is..I changed my mind to raise them till Easter which is going to be almost 5months of their production.
What do you advice me to do because..I am going to have overweighed cost of production.and im sure its not economical enough to sell them for #3500.Im scared.im finking of getting help on processing into frozen chicken by ending of jan when they will be exactly 3months.
Please I need your advice on what to do and how to go about it. Thanks in advance.im new here, and it feels good to be part of ds great forum.
..
If u can process to frozen chicken, fine.
