Haven't posted anything for a while, but I guess dejisys 'work warranted one. Your work on the SMSLive247 portal is brilliant, if not short of perfect.

Sort of curious though, are you by any means Deji of Dijitanix?

Loungr, you might wish to contact 2Advanced then. Perhaps their portfolio would demonstrate the "minimalistic but graphical interface" that you earnestly seek.

I see. Well then Latubu, go ahead and tell him how much you've got. At least there's some fellow in here, modest enough to oblige you his services.
WebmastersRe: Designing A Website: For Beginners by Farriel(m): 11:52am On Jul 24, 2006
Like, there are tons of just these same tuts out there on the web. That some tips and tricks needed to accomplishing specific tasks might be a bit more valuable. Tasks that newbies get troubled with in their course of becoming master designers or something. You get my drift?
WebmastersRe: Need A Web Tutor by Farriel(m): 11:40am On Jul 24, 2006
Such a funny request, if you ask me. Funnily rude request from someone who is yet to start learning. What's with all the "The person must be very good with Flash,asp and php.(The person must be a good teacher too).Any interested person can mail me with his/her name,phone number and address." ?

Don't you think with all the qualities you want in your prospective trainer, you're better off attending a formal training centre?

Your request can easily be perceived as rude, if not downright condescending. Go get yourself trained formally, Latubu, quit your request for a trainer (whom from all indications, you're speaking to like you'll speak to your prospective driver). Honestly.

uzomaeze, you can't honestly and entirely disagree with saintchux now, can you?

Besides, do you seriously think that Yahoo Nigeria would bring a problem (a problem that you alone can foresee), not reedeem some bits of Nigeria's thrashed image?

WebmastersPhpbb Critical Error. Could Not Connect To Database. by Farriel(op): 10:53am On Jun 28, 2006
Have been trying to configure this forum for Enyimba FC for the fanzone. They've got this hosting account with Yahoo and sadly, Yahoo Small Business have got limited PHP functions. I've got to install phpBB on another server and then just direct users to that.

Now, I've just finished a site (www.uciko.com) and I have decided to install phpBB on that server, since it's got Cpanel. Now when I navigate to the folder; www.uciko.com/forum I'm prompted to install. The parameters for the installation set up is what is causing problems right now.

The database I've created is forum, the database name is Farriel and password is ******** but stuff aint connecting to the database. What's wrong?

WebmastersRe: Your Greatest Embarrassment As A Webmaster Or Programmer? by Farriel(m): 10:23am On Jun 28, 2006
Pretty philosophical there, my2cents.

Every comment on embarrassing moments have been indeed embarrassing and worth sharing. I haven't had any embarrassing moment worth sharing but one that I can remember for now happened sometime in '05.

I'd been pretty broke and the jobs weren't coming. I secured this contract that wasn't really much of a sh*t as regards cost but it was welcoming at the time. I was invited for a last minute meeting with the client (some consultancy firm to the major oil companies here in PH) and I was rudely embarrassed by the sudden twist in the client's agreement with me.

Meeting's held with of 3 guys and 2 ladies (didn't know what they all had to do). I had been kept waiting for over an hour in the conference room before they showed up and after absently inquiring about business, the guy at the head of the table drops the bomb.

The company regrets to announce that they weren't going to pay anything beyond 50% of what I was charging them. The initially agreed cost was a 100gs and that meant they weren't paying anything above 50gs. I was overly pissed off to say anything. Just stared at the guy with sheer malice in my eyes.

He had dropped the bomb with a little smile at the corner of his lips and I swore the guy had invited all the other guys around to watch my reaction to that. I could have got up and walked out but the 50gs was something that would have done a lot for me at the time. I considered the fact that all they requested for was a redesign, there weren't going to be any domain purchases nor hosting so all I could do was say I had to confer with my colleagues and get back to them. (You and I know I work alone. tongue)

Of course I went out, stood for some few moments and went back in, with my tail between my legs and said my colleagues said the least they could do was 70gs. At this, they said no. 50. No more no less. I got up and walked out.

A week later, I called and said my colleagues were willing to do it for the 50. I finished the job in 4 days and didn't regret my decision. But the thought of what went on in that conference room always kicks me.

ProgrammingRe: Php Form To Mail Problem by Farriel(op): 3:26pm On Jun 27, 2006
Yeah, even though I had to tweak some lines of code. The company field wasn't recognizing entries and still prompting users for company name, even though they had done that. I had to delete the print error variables.

So right now, no company name is coming through. But all the same man, I really appreciate this.

I wish I could your number or something so I could call you when I need to. Perhaps then I just might want to pay you for your time. Thanks Skima.

ProgrammingPhp Form To Mail Problem by Farriel(op): 12:06pm On Jun 23, 2006
Have got this silly problem with a PHP form to mail script. I'm currently working on this site, and on the contact page, have got this form http://www.uciko.com/aboutus/contact.htm

The problem is, upon filling the form and hitting the submit button, I do get the mail from the form, but without the entries filled. Was wondering if anyone could look at the code and help;

<?php

$MailTo = "farriel@gmail.com";
$Body = "My name is $T1 <br> My phone number is $T2 <br> My Fax number is $T3 <br> My email address is $T4 <br> My company Name is $T5 <br> My company phone number is $T6 <br> My company fax number is $T7 <br> My company email address is $T8 <br> This project is classified as $D1 <br> <P> <b>Project Description:</b> $S1 <br> We intend spending about $D2$T9 on this project.";
$Subject = "ATTN: New Comment from the web";
$MailFrom = "$T1 <$T2>";

$headers = "MIME-Version: 1.0\r\n";
$headers .= "Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1\r\n";
$headers .= "From: $MailFrom";

if ($MailTo) {

if (mail($MailTo, $Subject, $Body, $headers)) {}

}

$MailTo2 = "farriel@gmail.com";
$Body2 = "$Body";
$Subject2 = "$Subject";
$MailFrom2 = "$T1 <$T2>";

$headers2 = "MIME-Version: 1.0\r\n";
$headers2 .= "Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1\r\n";
$headers2 .= "From: $MailFrom2";

if ($MailTo2) {

if (mail($MailTo2, $Subject2, $Body2, $headers2)) {}

}

/* Redirect browser */

$Url = "Location: http://www.uciko.com/aboutus/confirmation.php";

header($Url);

/* Make sure that code below does not get executed when we redirect. */

exit();
?>

This is what is between me and a formal completion of the project.

No shakes man, will do. There's something already in the works. Would start development next week.
WebmastersRe: Stuck On Prototype by Farriel(op): 11:55am On Jun 22, 2006
Hahaha, far from that man. This is just an Enyimba fan whom contacted me via the Enyimba feedback form.

I shall want to include you in anything like that though, remember what I spoke to you about? The one we discussed sometime ago?
WebmastersRe: Stuck On Prototype by Farriel(op): 1:41pm On Jun 20, 2006
Thanks my2cents, your posts are infinitely remarkably hepful. Would make changes and see how it goes. Somehow though, I've kicked progress up a notch and you could check out the other pages.

The company's product of primary interest is gypsum, which is why there's a lot of talk on it and that of course necessitates the need for the hand holding the sedentary rock, but of interest, my2cents, is the fact that that's the only shot of a hand holding anything that I was given. So I guess the rock or stone or whatever it is would have to be retained.
WebmastersRe: Stuck On Prototype by Farriel(op): 7:18pm On Jun 18, 2006
Thanks man,

Would discuss more with client and let you know. But from a design point of view, is this looking promising? Particularly if the right things are added and the wrong things ditched?
WebmastersStuck On Prototype by Farriel(op): 7:22pm On Jun 17, 2006
Had been working on this since Friday evening. Have just finished watching the thrilling game between Ghana vs Czech Rep. and have decided to post progress so far. Funny thing is, I had had some sort of mental block, had been drawing a blank on what to do next, but as I watched the match and clicked here and dragged there, I ended up with this.

http://www.uciko.com

I need tips on what to add next. I'm fairly OK with design, client is ecstatic, but I just don't have a clue what would sit nicely on that, bright ideas anyone?

I think it's imperative that you take the time to learn the basics of web design, phantom.
WebmastersRe: Website Review by Farriel(m): 12:48pm On Jun 07, 2006
Anytime.
WebmastersRe: Website Review by Farriel(m): 11:50am On Jun 07, 2006
Yes, it's shaping up nicely, layout wise but there are some areas you might wish to look at.

The contact address displayed in the orange box, you might wish to change font and reduce size. Same with the main nav links above. Change font to something much aesthetic. Like Olumide has said, colour balance is important and there 4 to 5 different colours displayed there.

The banner there, is that a white lady's hand? And your logo at the right corner is also made up of 3 colours. How about a light shade of grey and green? Like Nigerian being green and dream and jobs light grey?

Your layout is looking real nice and professional, but reduce the amount of colours each content has and work on the fonts and logo. By the way, the Busky merchant ad there is overly pixelated, could you work on it? Other than these opinions of mine at this time, it's cool.
WebmastersRe: Could Someone Kindly Help Me With A Sure Link To Download Php And Mysql by Farriel(m): 1:41pm On Jun 02, 2006
This might be highly useful to you, so you just might wish to download it. It's stuffed with PHP 5, MySQL 5, Perl 5, Apache 2, Tomcat 5, including phpMyAdmin 2 (the highly intuitive software for creating MySQL databases on the fly!). I know you said PHP and MySQL, but just give it a shot. wink

I've been recommending this link to anyone who's interested in any web server tool. http://www.devside.net/web/server/free/suite

Be sure to check it.

And Kazey, thanks for remembering that. I'll experiment and post. Meanwhile, I've animated the Next Match column and added some motions to the interview of the week shot. Look at it and tell me how it looks.
WebmastersRe: Advertising My Website by Farriel(op): 10:58am On Jun 02, 2006
Yes, Youngies. You might wish to check out what my2cents had said, lots of the reviews here on Nairaland would help you.

Your site's layout scheme and content isn't really aesthetic, far from it. Try working on your layout, your colour scheme, etcetera.

Aha, this one jumped at me when I first checked it out, your banner.  Do something to it. The guy's smiling face, the bevelled slogan, the bevelled coat of arms, and the colour. Try adding other faces, making them less conspicous. Change the slogan's font, remove the bevel. Increase the size of the coat of arms and make it a sort of watermark and then adding a smaller version on it.

Your nav should also be changed. Use simple CSS and ditch the images.

Constraint your main content's table structure to be symmetrical with your banner. If you use a % based table, try placing the banner in a % based table and add an overflowing colour to the cell so it gived the banner a continuing illusion. Of course your cell colour and banner colour should match.

There's a lot more I could want to do to it, but these are the few I can point out now. Remember, all these are just my opinions.

By the way, the scrolling news above the banner should be placed somewhere lower, I had to scroll the page to the top, and then focus on it to see the news tick by. You might want to use a cell that's 190px by 80px somewhere below where you've got the member's area, citizens area, etc. Check out www.enyimbafc.net and notice the Quick Match Updates section to the right. Perhaps that might sit nicely. Don't you think?  wink

So much have been said, just make the changes you can.
