IHate9ja1:We have dry docks here in Nigeria that offer the above services, yeah it cost multi millions of Naira, I don't have an idea because it depends on the scope of job to be done on the vessel and different dry docks have their price tag |
maxwell60:Use your sense sometimes bro.... ![]() |
Too bad they will be scouting for sea time training in Nigeria, the last batch who graduated are still suffering at home because they are yet to be absorbed for their cadetship programme on-board ![]() |
IHate9ja1:The Average life span of a ship engine depends on the maintenance culture of the engine crew and company's zeal to supply spares for maintenance, though every five years continuous survey is carried out where the ship's engine must be totally overhauled (change of piston, cylinder head and liner, oil and water pumps, new valves, sometimes new crankshaft according to crank shaft deflection reading) and also the hull of the ship is sand blasted and lot of stuffs onboard are changed, then a surveyor from classification society like Lloyd's register, ABS, Bureau Veristas inspects and certifies that the ship is sea worthy. So most ships engine life span can stay for more than 30 years (Because I have seen product tankers that are still plying Nigerian Waters that was built in 1978) |
lakesidepapa:I guess November November are the ones suppressing the file because some oga at the top knows how much they are getting in bunkering their patrol boats in the coastal lines hence Mike November might not come into reality for now.. till when we are ready for such then the National assembly will work on it |
IHate9ja1:It was one month on/off, now it's two months and one month off |
havocypie:I can't promise you what I can't do.... There are lot of maritime companies in rivers state you can apply for your cadetship programme, search online and visit their office and also visit NIMASA office and submit your name and you may included in their list they usually send to companies to absorb cadets in their organisation |
IHate9ja1:*The signal flag is mostly effective on foreign going vessels, though I've worked onboard three different vessels and the signal flags are just lying there on the shelves in the bridge, to be frank coastal vessels ignore a lot of stuffs and boycott standard marine Standard operation procedures (SOP) *I have not experienced man overboard before neither a fire incident, though we conduct a mock drill on that... |
lakesidepapa:Well it's left for Foxtroit Golf to do something about it.... I hope NIMASA and November November can do something about it cos it will be a welcome development to the maritime sector |
Generalyemi:If you can't read my full story you can still move on to other comments on the thread though ![]() |
Spells:The crew onboard are not from Britain neither the ship a warship to defend herself from attack... but it's flag of registry is Britain (A British flagged vessel) so they are civilians just like us |
kenonze:Lol.... suspect ke? Go and watch Captain Philips... Somia Pirates are not to be toyed with when it comes to PIRACY at sea |
SAVEDBABA:Yeah and spy cameras too at least it will weed out some unscrupulous elements hiding behind uniforms Drabee just go on Social media and tweet @ GidiTraffic , the matter will soon trend But you have to be very sure you didn't commit any of the offences stated on the receipt because there's no evidence that you obeyed the rules. |
kenonze:If u've watched Captain Philip then the largest ship in the world can be hijacked even in the roughest sea |
Our vessel could have been a victim of this deadly pirate attack we were transiting to Usan from Onne port on Wednesday 17th. At about 1425hours just about 25minuites after we break convoy with the escort security vessels, our chief officer heard over the VHF of a pirates attack and the message was that at least 9persons has boarded a vessel and the crew of the vessel are rushing to the Citadel that they require immediate assistance. The vessel coordinate was given as which was about 11 Nautical Miles from us. The Chief Officer immediately alerted the Captain and he rushed to the bridge to take command. On arrival at the bridge while receiving the briefing from the Chief Officer he heard the message again and it was faint so he couldn't make out most of the traffic. Then another vessel ahead of us tried to re broadcast the message and was seeking for help from another field for intervention. At this time we confirmed it was not a drill. An internal alarm was raised for a real pirate situation and call for the engines to be increased to 1000RPM. We tried to contact all the security lines but was not going. We also altered our course towards Shell offshore terminal for possible security cover. Now as we were taking all these actions we sighted a fast boat moving from the direction of a drifting cargo ship towards the supply vessel that was trying to seek support for the distress vessel. We also saw another Supply Vessel close to the coordinate that was earlier given. Now all our focus was on the distant supply boat close to the coordinate until we saw the Speed boat close by, so we got even more worried and everyone was ready to head for our Citadel. After all other efforts to contact security failed we had to result to use of VHF. Luckily we succeeded in talking with the Security/Radar man on Usan FPSO. But the Coordinates was wrong, we started hearing the pirates talking in their local dialect (Ijaw) as to the success so far then we noticed that it was the Cargo ship that was under attack and they were having trouble gaining access based on their discussion on the small radio possibly hand held VHF. For over 2hours we were hearing the pirates talking on Radio because we were turning through and made an arc of less than 6NM from them as we slowly alter towards our destination. We also receive few messages on the Inmarsat EGC from France confirming the incident and advising vessels within the vicinity to be careful and also the actions they have taking so far and the incident happened at Lat. 03 54N Long. 007 09E Well I dunno how fast the Nigerian Navy rescued the hijacked vessel though but if it's true then kudos to them because I'm still recovering from the shock that we almost ran into them because those dudes are deadly Vectis Osprey is a general cargo ship not a merchant tanker and she left Onne port not Bonny Terminal and was making headway to Doula, Nigerian Journalist sha |

IHate9ja1:*My daily routine was explained in the previous reply, Wake up time depends on the type of watch you keep (I keep 0000hrs - 0600 hrs watch and 12:00hrs - 1800hrs) so obviously I wake up by 2335hrs and 1130hrs respectively to take over duty. *Breakfast time depends on vessels, but it's normally from 05:30hrs --06:30hrs so that people taking over duty can eat before going to resume and those knocking off from duty can eat and rest too. *Report Writing, Well they are lot of report writing involved in ship work everyday especially for the deck department, so I don't wanna go there. *Some vessels are equipped with WiFi, like the vessel I'm currently working has ethernet port in all cabins which you can plug your laptop or router for Internet access, and other vessels has Internet service for only the captain and chief engineer for their noon reports, requisitions, etc and like I replied earlier I have not work on NLNG vessel so I don't know how they operate *Bridge and Galley loaded? I guess u've not stepped into the engine room before lol, the piping arrangement system alone will confuse you. *We have two functioning ports in Rivers State (One is located in Port Harcourt town and the other in Onne) Though Onne is popular due to presence of Intels and mainly used by Oil and gas companies, we have another port in Calabar, Warri and Lagos *Port Health officers are so corrupt that they forget to do their jobs which they are paid to do, they always come and collect money without doing the proper thing, Fumigation is carried out by the company even though Port health issues out the fumigation certificate. *Which flag are you talking about? The signal flags? |
IHate9ja1: *The daily life is boring but since its what I do.. I always make the best use of my time by reading, the daily routine is the same everyday : Eat, Work, Sleep, also good crew can make your day on-board worthwhile *AHTS, PSV daily life is the same.... though PSV contracts are usually short term due to the nature of their job, because some AHTS serves as PSVs too, In short AHTS are multipurpose boat though PSV have larger deck space *I've not worked on offshore platforms, so I can't tell how they life their lives but those guys are living the life men!!!! Though in an hazardous environment *Like I replied earlier, AHTS vessel is a good investment rather than PSVs, because AHTS serve the purpose of static towing, and Supply.. if u've been to Onne Port u'll see a lot of PSV vessels on anchorage without contracts, their contracts are always short termed except when commissioning or decommissioning an oil installation * AHTS and Security Patrol boats are more in demand *I've not not worked onboard NLNG vessels, even though most of their captains are white folks, I guessed they are paid well, I think they might not be paid below N1.8million if converted to Naira monthly |
IHate9ja1:1. How do vessels sail @ night: Well I'm not in the deck department but i'll try and explain to my best knowledge, All vessels are equipped with Radar, AIS, Compass and Navigational lights, So before setting on a journey, the captain or Chief Officer must have plotted their chart and set to autopilot (on Modern Vessels), The Autopilot moves the vessels automatically and also the navigational lights is put switched on to help other ships determine which is the give-way vessel when encountering each other at night to avoid collision (Just like a car taillights to show that there's a car in front of him/her), So the Radar and AIS helps in Navigation. 2. How is sludge tank emptied onboard: This is my field lol, Well I guess you should understand why you got a lighter response on this question, because a lot of ships in Nigerian waters are defaulters when it comes to cases of oil pollution management on-board, other countries takes oil pollution cases very seriously like imprisonment, detention of vessel, fines and withdrawal of license, and since you were an IT student, they won't tell you more information on how they empty their sludge tanks. Onboard a ship, an Oily water separator is fitted to separate oil and other contaminants that could be harmful to the aquatic animals and could destroy their ecosystem, On larger ships we have what we call bilge holding tanks where water and oil leakage in the engine room is collected in bilge wells and this oily water mixture is then transferred to primary bilge tank or bilge holding tank, where the mixture is settled down and then is transferred to secondary bilge tank. The oily water separator is supplied through secondary or separated bilge tank and a shore connection is also connected to this tank to dispose off all the collected bilge to shore. And the SLUDGE TANK is located inside the engine room, this tank is used to store sludge produced after treating fuel or lube oil through purifiers and clarifies, it can also be called DIRTY Holding Tank, This tank is also connected to the Oily Water Separator which will reduce the oily content to 15ppm before discharging it onboard WHY SOME VESSELS PUMP OIL OVERBOARD 1. The Oily Water Separator has a coalescing filter which need to be change almost all the time to achieve the 15ppm and it's expensive, so the company management hardly supply such filters and spares are not readily available in Nigeria 2. Laziness of the crew (Especially the Chief Engineer, since he's the only person responsible to operate the equipment) 3. The Equipment is not functioning optimally 4. Nigeria is a lawless country hence the frequent discharge of oil overboard lol HOW THE SLUDGE TANK IS EMPTIED ONBOARD 1. Via international shore connection, Whenever a ship calls to any port, it's the duty of the Port Authority to collect waste products by connecting a hose from the ship to their waste tanker where the waste is transferred 2. Via Oily Water Separator 3. Discharging it directly ( Bad practice, if caught in another country you'll be imprisoned) A record of oil discharged is recorded in Oil record log book which is inspected by the flag state administrator (NIMASA) Any more questions would be entertained |

bimbor:When lube oil mix with water in diesel engines, the main reason is a cracked cylinder head gasket or cracked cylinder head, another possible reason is a damaged or cracked oil cooler or possibly could be failure in water pump seal which allows oil mix with water |

Choose your career wisely and follow your passion dearie!!! |
bimbor:Common problems associated with high water temperature in diesel engines *Could be Faulty water pumps (For marine diesel engines) *Cracked cylinder head *Faulty sensor and thermostat; This might send wrong signal to the gen set which would trip off the gen set *Scale formation inside your radiator thereby hindering air flow to cool the water in your radiator, I would advise you conduct a water cooling analysis or you flush your radiator *Engine lubricating oil level: Oil level too low or too high will cause overheating and possible loss of the coolant. *Also check your radiator tank cap gasket and make sure you don't over fill your radiator with water/coolant I don't know how your engine looks like, Does your engine have a fan which cools the radiator? If yes have you checked the Vee Belt tension? You can tell me the type of cooling system employed on your diesel engine and i'll try to help I'm just giving you tips based on my experience of marine diesel engines (CAT, Wartsila, BlackStone, MTU engines) |
We seafarers can digest the fact of staying away from friends for few months when sailing, parting away from the family for months together is what tear our hearts apart. Some might have just started their married life while others would have recently experienced parenthood, missing those precious moments with their loved ones for whom they care the most, is what hurts seafarers to the core. No seafarer wants to miss spending time with his wife or see his son or daughter grow old without him being around. It is then that seafarers realize the importance of “family life” and “loved ones”. The pain of staying away for months is also one of the main reasons most seafarers quit sea jobs. imagine staying at sea for 5-6 months especially seafarers working on-board oil tankers, LNG Ships... though in recent times ILC (international labour convention) has really looked into the matter on how to reduce time seafarers spends onboard and its only up to the shipowners to determine time off and on periods for their crews. Thats why Coastal maritime jobs is booming, because i stay one month on-board and one month ashore with friends and family... Which has really made the job more convenient and interesting for me. Though some seafarers has really painted the sailing career so bad that we really look like the "bad guys".. Some married seafarers would spend one month on-board and would not wanna go home to his family but rather stay in hotels wasting their money on call girls and then go back to sea again, I've witnessed countless number of seafarers wasting their time off period in hotels rather than going back to their loved ones at home. Filippinos are the worst set of people working on-board ships, When a Filipino seafarer is given employment onboard a ship,They stay away for one year and few months in a row, leaving their wives in charge of family affairs like taking care of the household and the children. I don't know how their wives cope with such lifestyle sha.. Moreover, Sailing is a great career for men with great focus and prospect and its always rewarding to master the sea trade ![]() |
