LAGOS — LAGOS State
Government, weekend, urged
residents to disregard
insinuations of imminent attack
on the state by the Boko Haram
Islamic sect and its breakaway faction, Jama’atu Ansaral
Muslimana Fi Biladis –Sudan,
saying the state was safe. The government, however,
stepped up security around
Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, the
seat of goverment. The restriction order issued by
the government to vehicle
owners without permit from
using car park few kilometres
from the Secretariat, has been
intensified. A source told Vanguard that
“any staff who intends to carry
out an official assignment at the
weekend, henceforth, must
obtain permit from the Head of
Service, HOS, Mr. Adesegun Ogunlewe, before he or she could
be allowed into the premises. This came as the government
ordered members of the National
Union of Road Transport
Workers, NURTW, in Ojuelegba
Bridge to vacate the area
immediately for security purpose. Speaking on the rumour of
impending attack, Commissioner
for Information and Strategy,
Lateef Ibirogba, and his
counterpart in the Ministry of
Environment, Tunji Bello, said the government had already put
measures in place to ensure
adequate protection of lives and
property in the state. They spoke 24 hours after
rumour started spreading that
both Islamist sects were
planning to attack the state, the
commercial nerve centre of the
country. According to Ibirogba: “I will say
categorically that Lagos is safe.
Lagosians should not entertain
any fear. We have done all we are
supposed to do for Lagosians’
safety. I want to tell them to go about their normal duties
without entertaining any fear.
The idea of Boko Haram coming
to attack Lagos is nothing to
scare anybody. “This is a proactive government
and Lagosians have confidence
in their government. Lagos is
home to everybody and I don’t
think anybody in a right frame of
mind will want to extend act of terrorism or violence to Lagos.
No matter how you look at it
people have one interest or the
other in Lagos.” On Ojuelegba Bridge, Bello, said
the decision to relocate the
transporters became necessary
to clean up the place and get rid
of some unscrupulous elements
hiding in the park to perpetrate evil at night. He said the Kick Against
Indiscipline, KAI, would now
occupy the park and ensure the
transporters polluting the place
did not return.

The Chromebook Pixel runs Google's Chrome operating system and has been "largely built" by the web giant.

The laptop has Intel's Ivy Bridge processors, fast 4G LTE connectivity and a high-resolution screen aimed at challenging Apple's Retina Display.

Analysts say the move represents a fresh bid to build market share for Chromebooks against machines running Microsoft and Apple operating systems.

Unlike PCs that use installed software such as Microsoft Word, Chrome OS computers run their applications through the firm's web browser and store their files in the cloud.

The internet giant told the BBC the device was "largely built by Google, with components that are manufactured globally".

The laptop's 12.85in (32.64cm) display's resolution is similar to the so-called Retina Display of Apple's MacBook range, aimed to have pixel density high enough for the human eye not to notice pixelation when looking at the screen at a typical viewing distance.

"This Chromebook has the highest pixel density (239 pixels per inch) of any laptop screen on the market today," said the company.

"Packed with 4.3 million pixels, the display offers sharp text, vivid colours and extra-wide viewing angles.

The challenge for the Chromebook is that computing is shifting towards tablets”

Geoff Blaber CCS Insight

"With a screen this rich and engaging, you want to reach out and touch it — so we added touch for a more immersive experience."
Embracing the cloud

The first Chrome-powered laptop, built by Samsung, went on sale in June 2011. Chrome laptops that followed were made by Acer, Lenovo and HP.

But so far, Chromebooks have had difficulties challenging Windows-powered computers, said CCS Insight analyst Geoff Blaber.

"Chromebooks have struggled for relevance to date, stuck between comparably-priced but entertainment-centric tablets - many of which run Android - and more functional PCs," he said.

"[The new computer] won't transform its prospects but Google will hope it serves as a flagship device that has a halo effect for the broader portfolio."

Windows 8, Microsoft's latest operating system launched last year, has touchscreen capabilities.

Mr Blaber said: "Touch is now pervasive across every computing category from phones to high-end PCs.

"The challenge for the Chromebook is that computing is shifting towards tablets whilst most consumers lives are not yet fully embracing the cloud versus local storage."

PoliticsJulius Berger To Build Second Niger-Bridge by Fatdon(op): 2:08am On Feb 23, 2013
The Federal Government has announced Julius Berger AIMS Consortium as the preferred bidder for the construction of the Second Niger Bridge that is to connect Delta and Anambra states.

The Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, stated this in Abuja on Yesterday (Friday) after hours-long meeting with delegates from the consortium and various government agencies.

According to him, five construction firms took part in the bidding process, but Julius Berger AIMS Consortium won.

He said, “We have gone through a painstaking procurement process that lasted for about 13 months and at the end of the procurement the preferred bidder has emerged. It is important to let Nigerians know that very competent consortia bid for this particular project.

“I am happy to announce that at the end of the procurement process, Julius Berger AIMS Consortium emerged as the preferred bidder for the Second Niger Bridge project.”

Onolememen said the project was advertised for expression of interest, adding that the concessionaires expressed interest in the bidding for the project under the Design, Finance, Build, Operate and Transfer model.

“And that is why this particular meeting was convened today to commence the second phase of this particular transaction that will necessarily lead to the preliminary site work of the bridge that will link Onitsha and Asaba in Anambra and Delta states,” he said.

Onolememen added, “Going forward, part of the work that will be carried out in the next couple of weeks will include detailed hydrological and topographical surveys, and of course, a geological survey. And we will always carry out a detailed environmental/social impact assessment of the process and an in-depth traffic survey among others.”

He said the government’s transaction adviser had virtually completed a detailed traffic survey, stressing that Nigerians should know that the Federal Government was committed to delivering the Second Niger Bridge project.
“I want to assure Nigerians that this project is fast becoming a reality,” he said.

Asked to comment on the duration of the project, he said, “This is not a contract. It is a PPP transaction. The PPP transaction will cover a period of 25 years for them (Julius Berger AIMS Consortium). By the conclusion of the discussions on the second phase, at least the construction period will emerge. It is not like a normal contract that the government is funding.”

He explained that the consortium would raise the fund for the project and that the government would only take a very marginal percentage of it to show commitment.

He said, “It is interesting to note that Africa Infrastructure Investment Managers or AIMS, are world leaders in infrastructure financing and they are in partnership with one of the biggest infrastructure financier in the world.

And we are happy that this project has been able to attract such a group to this country.”

CelebritiesNollywood Loses 4 Actors In 2 Months. by Fatdon(op): 7:34pm On Feb 22, 2013
These are obviously not the best of
times for the Nigerian movie industry,
Nollywood. So far this year, the
industry has lost four actors; Bisi
Komolafe, Lugard Onoyemu, Collins
Ifeanyichukwu and Justus Esiri. On 1 January, the industry was hit
by the shocking demise of young
actress, Bisi Komolafe. The actress,
who belonged to the Yoruba
sector of Nollywood, died after
she had a miscarriage. There were plans to fly her out for proper
medical treatment when she
passed on. Former Secretary General of AGN,
Lugard Onoyemu, slumped and died
at the National Stadium, Surulere at
about 5:30p.m. on 14 February. He
will be buried today.
A day after Lugard’s death, Collins
Ifeanyichukwu, an actor and movie
producer based in Abuja also died. A
registered member of AGN,
Ifeanyichukwu died on 15 February at
the Maitama General Hospital after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife,
Blessing Collins, and less than a year-
old son, Doxa Efechukwu Collins. Apparently, the industry was yet to
recover from the sad news of these
thespians when the biggest one
happened; legendary actor, Justus
Esiri, 70, passed on this week. These developments have further
heightened the fear among Nigerian
actors. Most of them have admitted
that the successive deaths are
spiritual, and perhaps, a call for them
to move closer to God.
National President of AGN, Ibinabo
Fiberesima, said: “With the incessant
deaths in the entertainment industry
this year, it is high time we put a stop
to it. We must surrender our lives to
Almighty God irrespective of our religious beliefs. Let’s come together
and embark on prayers and commit
our industry and practitioners to
God. We need serious prayers. We
must reject death in the
entertainment industry. Join us irrespective of your status, age,
beliefs, profession, etc. Let’s pray.” The guild’s Secretary General,
Abubakar Yakub, while speaking with
P.M.NEWS Entertainment Cafe, simply
said: “I don’t understand what is
going on anymore. Why has death
focused on our industry?” Two years ago, following the
successive deaths of some iconic
figures in the movie industry, the
General Overseer of the Redeemed
Christian Church of God, RCCG,
Pastor Enoch Adeboye, organised a special prayer session for the
entertainers. The event, which was
held at the church’s headquarters in
Ebute-Metta, Lagos, was aimed at
praying against deaths and sickness
among Nigerian entertainers. Some of the actors in attendance
were Segun Arinze, Iya Rainbow,
Hakeem Rahman, Jide Kosoko, Dele
Odule, Femi Ogedengbe, Mike Bamiloye
and wife, Pa Kasumu and the now late
Justus Esiri to mention a few. Early this year, the Igbo Filmmakers
Forum also gathered members at
White House Hall, Ikeja, where they
prayed fervently against deaths in
the industry. But death has continued
to bare its fangs.

Unknown gunmen stormed Kogwom village in Vom district of Jos south local government area, Plateau State, killing 10 individuals and leaving two others fatally injured. The gunmen attacked a family compound
where 10 members of the family were killed in
cold blood while two others sustained
gunshot wounds after which the attackers
routed their escape through surrounding
environs. The special task force in a press release
signed by Lieutenant Kingsley Egbo confirmed
the gruesome murder of the family stating
that efforts by the force and police to gain
access to the scene with a view to combing
the area for possible trace of the attackers were foiled by the locals. Two members of the family were fortunate to
be alive and are receiving treatment at the
Vom Christian hospital. Meanwhile, angry youths continue to protest
the incessant killings in the area. Reports from the community indicates that
the family lost a grandmother few days ago
and gathered for the preparation of her
funeral which informed the large presence of
the members in the compound as the
assailants attacked in the night after a family meeting. Reacting to the attack, Special Adviser to
governor Jonah Jang on media and Publicity
Ayuba Pam who was at the scene described
the incident as barbaric and inhuman
stressing that government will not rest in the

PoliticsN65m Alleged Theft: EFCC Arraigns Speaker’s PA. by Fatdon(op): 6:25am On Feb 09, 2013
The Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission, EFCC,
yesterday arraigned the
Personal Assistant to the Lagos
State Speaker, Hon Adeyemi Ikuforiji, Mr Oyebode Atoyebi
over alleged stealing of N65
million belonging to Resourcery
BDC Ltd. Atoyebi, was charged along with
a former regional manager of
Intercontinental Bank Plc (now
Access Bank Plc), Olayinka Sanni,
on a two count charge of
stealing the money. Sanni and Atoyebi were said to
have on June 29, 2011 conspired
among themselves to commit
felony to wit: stealing N32.5
million property of Resourcery
BDC Ltd. The duo, who are also facing a
N672 million fraud charge before
Justice Deborah Oluwayemi,
however, pleaded not guilty. Counsel to Atoyebi, Mr. Abiodun
Onidare, asked the court to
grant his client bail, noting that
Section 249 of the Administration
of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) of
Lagos State 2011 gives only Lagos State the power to
prosecute such matters in the
state High Court and not EFCC. However, Counsel to Sanni, Chief
Sobo Sowemimo SAN, in his
application, urged the court to
grant his client bail since he will
not jump bail, saying that the
EFCC had earlier granted him administrative bail which he did
not jump. “The applicant (Sanni) has no
criminal record and he is in poor
health which further detention
will compound matter. I
graciously urge your Lordship to
grant the defendant bail,” Sowemimo added. He argued that Sanni was
granted bail by Justice Lateefat
Okunnu on similar proceeding
and urged the court to be bound
by the same terms under which
his client was admitted to bail, adding that if his client had
committed the alleged offence, it
should be the Lagos State
Government that would
prosecute in such circumstances. “If EFCC wants to initiate such
proceedings, they should go to
the Federal High Court. If you are
intiating any proceeding in the
Lagos High Court, it has to be in
the name of Lagos State and not Federal Republic of Nigeria, FRN,”
Sowemimo said. Opposing the application of
defence lawyers, EFCC
prosecutor, Mr. Oyedepo Rotimi,
argued that they cannot raise
an objection after the plea of
their client has been taken with their consent. Citing FRN vs Bode George (2011)
10 NWLR, part 1254 page 1, Rotimi
said that EFCC was a common
agency for both Federal
Government and state
governments, and urged the court to commence trial. “Raising this objection today is
to delay trial. We have two
witnesses here in court and if my
Lordship gives another
adjournment, I would be closing
my case because I am not calling more than four witnesses. I do
not know any miscarriage of
justice anybody would suffer if
the matter is prosecuted by FRN
or by Lagos State,” he added. On the defendants’ bail
application, Rotimi urged the
court not to be bound by Justice
Okunnu’s ruling, stressing that
the grounds which Sanni was
granted bail was not same with charge LCD/177/2012. “In this case, we have what it
takes to convince this court and
I did not take part in that
prosecution,” he further added. After listening to the argument
of all the counsel, the judge
adjourned the case till February
13 for both continuation of
argument and ruling.

SportsCAF Sacks Referee That Officiated Ghana Vs Burkina Faso Match. by Fatdon(op): 5:16am On Feb 08, 2013
Confederation of African Football (CAF) has
banned Tunisian referee, Slim Jdidi after his
controversial performance in Wednesday’s
semi-final between Burkina Faso and Ghana. Secretary General of CAF, Hicham el-Amrani,
said the continental body is not happy with
the standard of refereeing in the match and
Jdidi has been asked to step aside. Among the
contentious issues during Wednesday’s match
was the red card given to Burkina Faso forward Jonathan Pitroipa that could mean
he will miss Sunday’s final against Nigeria. The referee also awarded a soft spot kick to
Ghana in a display which threatened to
overshadow an exciting encounter. CAF has
however admitted the appeal of the
Burkinabe football federation for suspended
striker Jonathan Pitroipa. Pitroipa was sent off after receiving a
second yellow card by Tunisia referee slim
Jdidi for simulation, even though Ghana’s John
Boye appeared to make contact with him. CAF
Secretary-General said the organising
committee will study the match report sent in by the Tunisian official before taking any
decision.

SportsAFCON Final: Jonathan, Adeboye, yuguda, Globacom Congratulate Super Eagles. by Fatdon(op): 3:32pm On Feb 07, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan and the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, are the first set of eminent Nigerians to congratulate the Super Eagles for its victorious feat against Mali Wednesday. Moments after the referee signalled the end of the match at the Mobhida
Stadium in Durban, President Jonathan said on his facebook page: “Again, Coach Keshi and our skilful and patriotic players have shown the world the indomitable Nigerian spirit. It is in this spirit that Nigeria’s leading lights came together to celebrate on Monday the 4th of February 2013 as we began our centenary celebrations. The Super Eagles have done us proud, the cup is within reach and Nigeria is indeed grateful and expectant of a special centenary gift from our players.” Pastor Adeboye, some minutes later on his facebook page said: “Trust GOD where you cannot trace HIM, congrats to the Super Eagles. Keep committing your ways unto GOD and HE will see you through in JESUS name.” In its reaction, the official sponsor of the national teams, Globacom, congratulated the team for qualifying for the finals in grand style. The leading telecommunications firm commended the Super Eagles players for their purposeful football, excellent marksmanship and disciplined play, urging them to remain focused and ensure they win the trophy last won by Nigeria 19 years ago. “We salute your heroism on the field of play. You have made the entire nation proud,” said Globacom in the statement. “Nothing but the trophy is good enough for the country. It will re- establish our pre-eminence in African football where we were once regarded as the true giant of African football. We urge the Super Eagles to go for victory on Sunday to restore our lost glory in African soccer,” Globacom noted. The telecoms giant, which is reputed to be the biggest supporter of football in Nigeria, appealed to the players to maintain the unity and love in the camp that had ensured victory for the team thus far and concentrate on the task of winning the trophy by eschewing complacency. The Bauchi State Governor, Malam Isa Yuguda, expressed optimism that there is no stopping the lads from winning the cup on Sunday. An elated Yuguda who watched the match in his office alongside other top government functionaries declared that, “with the way these good ambassadors of Nigeria are playing, the glorious days of Nigerian football are here again; we are going to rule African football once again.” He commended the resilience and fighting spirit of the players coupled with the technical abilities of the technical bench led by Head Coach Stephen Keshi, pointing out that with the two arms working together, the team will definitely brush aside any opposition no matter how strong and stiff to ensure that the cup makes a return to Nigeria. Nigeria secured its seventh final ticket of the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations after a convincing 4-1 spanking of Mali at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. It was a day of destiny gently turned into a day of providence for the Super Eagles as the team utterly outclassed Mali in the first semi- final. The first half began with the Nigerians keen to recall the tempo that had seen off Cote d’Ivoire in the quarter-finals. The opening stages saw chances for both sides, as Mali threatened from set pieces, and Emmanuel Emenike forced a smart save from Mamadou Samassa – recalled between the goal post to replace penalty hero So Diakite. When it comes to ‘tempo’, however, Victor Moses is often in a class of his own – and this occasion was no different. The Chelsea man was in stunning form, and it was his invention and natural ability that broke the deadlock. Bursting down the right flank, he sold the Malian left-back with a Cruyff turn before sending a delicious curling cross into the six-yard box. Elderson Echiejile was on hand to finish things off, stooping low to head the ball past Samassa. It was the defender’s first goal for his nation, drawing parallels with France’s Lillian Thuram, who scored his only international goals in France’s victorious semi-final in ’98. The dominance continued as Mali’s backline were again cut to shreds. Once more, Moses was the architect; his cross field run created indecision among the defence, before his delightful pass set Emenike free – the striker opted to play in his partner Ideye Brown, who made no mistake from close range. Before half time, Nigeria all but ended the match as a genuine contest. The Super Eagles were awarded a free kick for a tenuous Momo Sissoko tackle on Moses, and Emenike, one of the heroes against Cote d’Ivoire, stepped up with glory in his eyes. He did not disappoint, although even he would not have expected the goal to come in such bizarre circumstances: the wall separating and his fierce shot finally dribbling into the net, past the stranded Samassa, with Mali looking on aghast. Months, if not years, of waiting for the talents of Chelsea pair Moses and John Obi Mikel to finally bloom finally came to fruition and both were influential; Moses, explicitly, crafting two goals, performing as many had dreamt he would, and Mikel, more subtly, controlling the play, and even threatening the Malian goal with a powerful strike. As the game wore on, the differences between the two teams became starker. Mali, demoralised, looked leggy after their wearing quarter-final match against South Africa, while the Nigerians impressed with their fluid off the ball movement and a hunger throughout the team. In the second half, it became apparent early on that Mali had realised the game was up, with the pace descending to a canter, all of the Super Eagles were keen to involve themselves in the action. Ahmed Musa, on for Moses, was the brightest. His goal on 60 minutes was
the icing on the cake, and finally broke Malian resistance once and for all. A late consolation goal for the Eagles, scored by Mady Diarra, was little succour for a side so outclassed on such a major stage. It has been a mixed tournament for Patrice Carteron’s Eagles. Qualifying from the group and besting the hosts afforded memorable moments, but they have at times looked like a one man team, and have often lacked inspiration in attacking areas. Sunday will be Nigeria’s seventh appearance in the final of the Africa
Cup of Nations, in 17 appearances. They have won twice (1980 and 1994) and finished as runners-up in 1984, 1988 (both to Cameroun), 1990 (to Algeria) and 2000 (again, to Cameroun). Also on Sunday, Keshi, who captained the victorious Nigeria team in 1994, has the opportunity of becoming the only man alive to have won the Africa Cup of Nations both as player and as coach. The only other person, Egyptian Mahmoud al-Gohary, who won as player in 1959 and as coach in 1998, died last year. On the other hand, Keshi’s young Nigerian team are growing boldly into national colours. With a final date set up against either Ghana or Burkina Faso, the sky is the limit for the West African powerhouse. Expect a confident spectacle from the Super Eagles on February 10 in Johannesburg.

Four distributors of Pornographic materials were arrested at Cele Bus Stop on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway on Tuesday by the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit after the police raided the area. Those arrested will be arraigned before the Special Offences Court at the taskforce yard and prosecuted for selling obscene materials.

The sellers of the X-rated materials arrested are Yinka Dada, 25 years; Udoh Nne, 29 years; Sylvester Obodoe, 18 years and Poopola Bamidele, 18 years.

The culprits admitted that they knew hawking Pornographic materials is prohibited in any part of the state. 18-year-old Obodoe said he knew the act was outlawed in the state but resorted to hawking P0*nographic materials to eke out a living.

He however pleaded for mercy and promised not to violate the law again.

According to the Taskforce Chairman, Bayo Sulaiman, there had been complaints by residents of the resurgence of Pornographic materials on the streets of Lagos, and so the taskforce took action on the complaints.

He reiterated that the government has banned the selling or distribution of such materials because of the negative influence they have on children, and therefore warned that anyone caught in the act will face the wrath of the law.
