A teacher, Mr. Sammy Davies Abraham, has received his reward on earth by winning the sum of N5 million from the MTN sponsored Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (WWTBAM) television game show. The Livingstone Preparatory School, Ibadan teacher won the prize on Sunday night. As a member of Deeper Life Bible Church, Abraham confessed after winning the prize that he didn’t have a television set until about four years ago when a friend sold one to him for N3,000. “Some years back, we members of Deeper Life weren’t watching television. But about four years ago, a friend of mine gave me a television and video player and said I should pay just N3,000 for them. That was how I got a television. Even after getting it, I really didn’t watch it because I was not really used to gadgets like that. But later, we started watching it and I came across the programme, WWTBAM,” he said. Abraham, 58, who graduated from the Evangelical Presbyterian Teachers Training School, Ghana, in 1975, added that his wife and kids persuaded him to participate in the television show produced by Ultima Limited. He said: “I usually watch the programme at home and most times, get the questions correctly. So, my wife and children said instead of wasting my knowledge, I should enrol to participate in the show. That was what motivated me to start dialling 132. Though I once participated in the home quiz and won N20,000. That was about two years ago.” He further told P.M.NEWS that the money he won from the TV game show will be invested in the establishment of a school, which has been his dream for many years. “Now that God has answered our prayers, the whole amount is going into the project.” The elated father of four, who has been married since 1993, confessed that the development is a great relief for him, and a testimony to the fact that teachers can actually get their reward on earth. Also speaking with P.M.NEWS, his wife, Mrs. Clementina Ngozi Abraham, said: “I want to thank Ultima Limited for what they are doing. More power to their elbows for giving people the opportunity of getting to where they never thought they would be.” www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/03/18/nigerian-teacher-wins-n5m-in-tv-show/

Former military president Gen. Ibrahim BadamasiBabagida, yesterday clearedthe air on his supported for the emergence of All Progressive Congress (APC). He said, “If there is one party state, because the smaller parties don’t have the strength, then there will be a lot of impunity, a lot of lawlessness.” Asked whether he would run for the presidency in 2015, hereplied: “No, no, no; I am out of 2015.” Gen. Babangida, who spoke on Kaduna-based radio programme Liberty Radio monitored by our correspondent, said two-party system was good for Nigeria. “I am a firm believer of two-party system and I also studied the emergence of political parties in this country immediately after independence and it showed that this country will be heading for a two- party system. You heard about the national alliance, parties coming from the north aligning with those from the south, NEPU aligning with NCNC and so it started again during ShehuShagari time. “So when we came into office, the two-party system was favouredbecause democratically you have a choice and can vote without belonging to a political party. “You vote for the quality of the man you want to represent you, so it is not anything new because I believe in two parties and I see signs of the possible emergence of a two-party system, I welcome it, it is good for the polity, it is good also for the unity of this country. “When we were doing it in 1989 some of you write us in the media that no it is going to be one Christian party, one Muslim party, it did not work then you said it was going to be one northern and one southern party and it did not work and everybody blended. The chairman of NRC was Chief Tom Ikimi, the chairman of SDP was Dr.BabaganaKingibe and everybody was in one or the other, you just have to have an accommodation. I am a founding father of the PDP and I cannot disown what I founded,” he said. On Obasanjo’s election in 1999,Babangida said itwas due to what happened in the country.“The country was in a serious crisis and we have to find the solution to the problem and therefore we needed a leader who is known in the country. We did not believe in foisting somebody who is not known on Nigerians, so we looked for a man who has been involved in the affairs of this country, who held position either in the military or in the cabinet and believedin Nigeria. “He (Obasanjo) quickly came to mind. Remember those days the fight was against the north’s perpetuation in power. But here, we have someone who knows the north, knows the south and who fought a war, who says what he means.Obasanjo’s emergence saved Nigeria. At least, we did not disintegrate because we believe he can go to war again, to keep this country,” Babagida stated. On 2015, Babangida said: “I will belong to those who will chose a credible candidate that can lead this country and it is not difficult to find out of 170 million people, there must be a candidate that is what the constitution provides, if the party is silly and chooses the wrong candidate, the ordinary person is not silly. He knows this man cannot lead me so he doesn’t vote for him. So if he chose a wrong candidate you stand the chance of losing the election.” Speaking on Gen.DimkatBallialleged claim that he would have become the head of state, IBB said, “He could have, but there was an understanding that we follow seniority in the service, we did not want to truncate the seniority order. That is why we still maintain that in 1975. DomkatBalli no doubt was our senior.” On the recent arrest of Iranian who claim they were on mission kill him and former Sultan of Sokoto,Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki, Babangida said that “I do not think that the Iranian have any reason to kill me.” www.leadership.ng/nga/articles/49670/2013/03/10/2015_count_me_out_ibb.html |

The revelation by Senator Ita Enang, representing Akwa-Ibom North that over 80% of the oil blocs in the country are owned by Northerners, ex- militant leader, Alhaji Asari Dokubo has asked President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately revoke the licences. “We must sound it clear to our brother, Jonathan, that if he fails to do something about it, we shall take our destiny on our own hands,” he said. “It’s not a threat, but a warning to our brother to act fast.” According to the leader of the Niger/Delta Peoples Volunteers Force, the revelation has justified the reason behind the restiveness in the Niger Delta. Asari said: “Can you now see what we have been fighting for? We own the oil and we are suffering for it. Is it a curse to have oil in our land? “Now, you see why these Northerners want to die in power. The oil we have is being controlled by them. Is that not funny?”See, let me tell you, if Jonathan fails to revoke the licences, we will take our destiny in our hands. We will not sleep any more for people to take what belongs to us. Nigerians must stand to resist a set of cabals that turned our country to their personal empire. “One single person is richer than Nigeria. They are sucking our blood. Our land is being destroyed every day. No water, we can’t fish anymore; the land is polluted. Yet, none of our people in the Niger/Delta controlls an oil bloc” he fumed. www.informationng.com/2013/03/niger-delta-oil-is-the-reason-northerners-want-to-die-in-power-asari.html

What promised to be a mild drama was abruptly aborted when, at Ogidi Boys High School, yesterday, in the course of Governor Peter Obi’s routine visit to schools, the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Reverend Valerian Okeke looked Obi in the face and said to him: ‘You do not know what you’re doing.’ When everybody was ready to receive the bombshell the Archbishop explained: ‘Mr Governor, I said you do not know what you’re doing because all the sacrifices you are making today, the efforts to revitalize institutions of state, to build roads, hospitals, schools, industries and so on, you do not know the impact they will have on the society in ten years time. You are really God’s wonderful gift to Anambra State.’ The Archbishop lamented what he called four wasted decades in Anambra State consequent upon the forceful takeover of mission schools which the State turned into a den for training armed robbers and all manners of vile characters that made the State rather than continue in the tradition of excellence, to embarrassingly become an exporter of criminals to other parts of the country. The Archbishop said he was happy that Obi’s seven years as Governor had been devoted to reversing this trend. He insisted that today, even those in the opposition had continued to concede that he has done better than any other Governor since Anambra State was created. He expressed the wish for Obi’s successor to be like him by saying: ‘odi ka gi ako na anyi’ ( may the State never lack someone like you). Addressing students of the schools visited along with the Governor, Most Reverend Valerian Okeke said by trying to make life easier for them, the Governor was directing them to see excellence as their only mantra. In his own remarks, Governor Obi who visited ten schools and mission hospitals yesterday including, Mater Amabilis, Umuoji; Our Lady Secondary School, Nnobi; St Joseph Special Science School & Seminary, Awka Etiti, Girls’ Secondary School, Umudioka, and Boys Secondary School Ogidi; and presented cheques worth 50 million Naira to Archbishop Valerian Okeke said the money brought the State’s 2012 support to the schools to a close. The Governor however assured that the support for 2013 will commence in this quarter. He lamented what he called the destruction of school system through the takeover of mission schools and once more apologized for what he described as grave error by the government. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/03/you-do-not-know-what-youre-doing-cleric-tells-gov-obi/ |

PDP can never win Anambra State since it is not performing. With the death of Dim Odumegwu (blessed memory) and crisis rocking APGA, the road is now set for the known messiah, Chris Ngige to easily take over the state and continue from where he stopped. |
LAGOS — President Goodluck Jonathan early Thursday, directed the top hierarchy of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to reinvigorate the party machinery towards meeting fresh challenges arising from the merger of the major opposition political parties into the fledgling All Progressive Congress, APC. The president’s directive was conveyed at the national caucus of the party which commenced Wednesday night in the presidential villa during which he also mandated the party to commence preparations to win Anambra State in the forthcoming gubernatorial elections. Also reflective of the president’s ascendancy over the party’s governors, it was also resolved that the National Executive Committee, NEC, of the party should be summoned within the next three weeks. The NEC meeting has not been held since July on account of palpable fears by some in the national leadership that the party’s governors could force their views on issues. The caucus meeting which was attended by six governors representative of the six geopolitical zones, Vanguard learnt, also discussed varying strategies to combat other issues confronting the party including the poor state of the party’s finances. The national chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, it was learnt, told the caucus that the party was practically broke and unable to meet its obligations. Upon the assertion, the president was reported to have directed that strategies should be employed to shore up the finances, though with the strict warning that nothing should be done to compromise the integrity of officials of government. “The president and those who spoke said that in the light of what happened after the second republic when governors were hounded for financial impropriety because of the way they financed their parties, it was stressed that the governors must be protected from such temptations.” The president it was learnt told the party executives to put machinery in place to be able to confront the emerging challenge from the APC, one source present at the meeting said. “Well it was not actually a wake up call, but just a necessary thing or something that is expected of us,” another source present at the meeting offered. The president also at the meeting directed that the party must begin the process of preparing for the elections in Anambra State and it was stressed that the will of the people must be allowed to prevail. As part of the strategies of winning the state, it was learnt that the preparations must begin early enough to enable hurt feelings from the primaries to heal well ahead of the election. “The president was insistent that the will of the people must prevail,” a source disclosed. One other source disclosed that the party’s fund raising committee headed by Vice- president Namadi Sambo should be further tasked with the duty of exploring options for raising funds for the party. The decision to seek independent ways of raising funds it was understood could end up finally taking the party away from the influence of the governors who until recently were allegedly strong financial supporters of the party. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/03/jonathan-mobilises-pdp-to-face-apc-challenge/

The ever increasing killings by the Boko Haram sector has continued unabated, this the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN) are at the moment mounting pressures of investigation in the last Saturday’s gruesome murder of 13 Christians by unknown gunmen which are suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists. While addressing newsmen in Kano on Tuesday, the Chairman of CAN Kano state branch, Bishop Ransom Bello told reporters names of 13 members of CAN who were shot dead in one compound at Sheka area in Kumbotso Local Government, has been sent to CAN headquarters for further action. The Bishop who also is the General Overseer of Calvary Life Assembly said that the 13 slain Christians who were shot dead by the gunmen around 7.30 pm on that fateful day are all factory workers who live in a large compound around Sharada Phase 111. However, the Bishop said that the only survivor from the attack said that the gunmen stormed the compound in two taxi cabs and separated the men from the women and children and opened fire on the men, killing the 13 of them on the spot; “Reports of the attack reaching us disclosed that, that fateful Saturday at about 7 pm, Muslim faithful were conducting their prayer close to the affected compound occupied by Christian families, when two taxi cabs stopped in front of the compound and the occupants, who all concealed their arms dashed into the complex and of demanded to know why the residents were not part of the 7 pm Muslim prayer.” “They responded by telling the visitors they were Christians and so could not be part of the Muslim gathering, at that point, they separated the men, about of them from their wives and children and shot them dead on the spot after ordering the women and children into their homes. The 13th victim, who hid in a dark alley in the compound, surrendered himself, following threats by the gunmen to visit the same fate on the women and children if any man was found shielded,” Bello stated. The CAN chairman of Kano, said that he is troubled over the silence of the relevant authorities in the state, including the government on such a high-profile murder, even though we believe it is the handiwork of extremists; “who do not see the reason why the Muslim North should accommodate Christians; adding that National president of CAN, Pastor Ayo Orisiejefor has been adequately briefed about the incident with a list of the victims, including their state of origin, “we have submitted them to CAN headquarters and we have been informed that actions were being taken.” Meanwhile CAN said that it is also worried on alleged insensitivity of the authorities to the plight of the affected families; “Government should show more concern, like it has always done when Muslims are affected; I have not seen that in the case of Christians, that 13 Christians were killed in one straight attack and nothing is heard from the government reflects selective justice because we are aware of compensation paid to Muslim families in situations of this nature.” However, responding, Kano State Commissioner of Police, Musa Daura, said the Command is doing all within its power to track down perpetrators of the attack, adding that t detectives of the Command have been deployed to nose for clues that will lead to the arrest of possible suspects. He described the incident as unfortunate and embarrassing. Meanwhile it gathered that since after the attack on the Emir, there has been mass exodus in Kano over the insecurity in the state, as majority of business men in the state are leaving for good as it is now crystal clear that the Kano State Government cannot guarantee their safety. www.247nigerianewsupdate.com/13-christians-massacred-in-kano-by-suspected-boko-haram-members/ |

The service would likely offer free music streaming paid for by ads as well as an ad- free subscription option, according to Fortune, which says it was briefed by sources in the record industry and by an unnamed person at Google. A YouTube representative told CNET that "while we don't comment on rumor or speculation, there are some content creators that think they would benefit from a subscription revenue stream in addition to ads, so we're looking at that." YouTube's streaming service would share at least one new feature reportedly coming to Google Play. Users of Google Play can currently buy, store, and listen to their own tracks online. But both services will reportedly offer a subscription plan designed to add more benefits. Record industry executives are still on the fence over the merits of a free ad-supported model versus an ad-free subscription, the sources told Fortune. More customers gravitate toward the free approach but many have been quite willing to pay for subscriptions that block out ads and offer more features. Of course, YouTube would compete against a host of other streaming-music sites, including Pandora, Spotify, Rdio, Muve Music, and Soundcloud. All of those services have a big head start and a fair number of users. Spotify leads the pack with 5 million paid subscribers around the world and 1 million in the U.S. Muve Music holds 1.4 million customers, followed by Spotify with around 1 million. But YouTube's audience is a lot bigger. More than 800 million different people visit the site each month, a lucrative landscape for music companies. www.m.cnet.com/news/youtube-to-launch-its-own-music-streaming-service-says-report/57572587 www.tech.fortune.cnn.com/2013/03/05/youtube-streaming/?iid=SF_T_Lead&hpt=te_r1 |
Enugu State Governor Sullivan Chime on Monday said the state government would give N10m to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the killers of Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Chinwike Asadu. The police chief was gunned down on Saturday in Enugu. Chime said the offer was born out of the need to resolve the puzzle surrounding the killing, which he described as "a humiliation to the police and the country". The governor stated this when he visited the Abakpa-Nike, Enugu residence of the deceased police commissioner. Chime said, "This is most embarrassing not just to the police, but to the nation. For the killing of a senior police officer in such a manner, to me, it is quite unfortunate and the state government has decided to take a position on this in order to show the seriousness of what has happened. "In the last few weeks, it has followed a pattern. What they do now is to follow and kill people with escorts; they kill and collect the guns of their victims. So, we are paying a ransom of N10m for anybody that will give us information that will lead to the arrest of the culprits. It's quite embarrassing." Chime added that the state would provide necessary assistance to security agencies to ensure the arrest of the killers. Chime, who condoled with the Inspector-General of Police, as well the government and people of Kwara State, pledged that the state government would assist the deceased family to assuage the pains of the killing. Meanwhile, detectives and forensic experts from the police homicide division on Monday visited Abakpa Nike, Enugu, where the assassination took place. Though no report of any arrests had been made, it was learnt that the detectives were at the crime scene to gather information as well as other evidence that would assist them in their investigation. Sources told our correspondent in Abuja that the investigators were being methodical in their bid to reconstruct the crime incident and build a list of suspects that were involved in the attack on the CP. "The detectives would need to move fast and raid all black spots to prevent the gunmen and other suspects from escaping from the state to another part of the country," a senior officer said. It was gathered that the investigators would rely on information from the two policemen that were with Asadu when he was attacked. The assailants injured the CP's orderly, Aloha Olaniyi, and driver, Oliver Omeh. They are currently receiving treatment at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu. Also, another police officer told one of our correspondent, "The police are in a hurry to apprehend the assailants, but they can't afford to repeat the Oyerinde mistake, so they are treading carefully." According to the officer, who craved anonymity, the homicide division has a good chance of solving the murder case if the investigators are thorough, professional and impartial. wwwmobile.punchng.com/output.php?link=http://www.punchng.com/news/enugu-pledges-n10m-for-information-on-cps-killers/ |

Nigeria, on Wednesday, secured a N45 billion loan from the African Development Bank Group. The loan is to support the Federal Government's economic governance and infrastructure development agenda under the Jonathan administration's transformation programme. The facility authorised by the Board of the regional finance bank in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, is to finance the transport sector and economic governance reform programme and Nigeria's Country Strategy Paper! CSP, for 2013 to 2017. The loan is packaged to support the government's effort to accelerate reform implementation in the areas of transport sector governance and public expenditure management. The reform measures include the establishment of a Federal Road Authority, National Road Maintenance Fund, Road-Tolling Policy, and Axel Load Control Policy. In the areas of public financial management reform, the programme involves the adoption of International Public Sector Accounting Standards, IPSAS; Internal Audit Modernization Plan; Treasuring Single Account, TSA; Government Integrated Public Financial Management, GIFMIS; and Transparency and Compliance in Procurement and Audit Practices. The programme is expected to also create fiscal space for increased investment in road infrastructure development. It is an integral part of a broader set of interventions of the Bank designed to support Nigeria's Transformation Agenda with emphasis to economic governance and infrastructure development. The Country Strategy Paper outlines the Bank's engagement and assistance to Nigeria, adding that it would focus on two strategic pillars: supporting the development of a sound policy environment, and investing in critical infrastructure to promote the development of the real sector of the economy. The strategy is aimed at aligning with the Nigerian government's long term development agenda. Critics of the Jonathan administration have made reference to Nigeria's increasing debt profile and continuous borrowing without a commensurate improvement in infrastructure and standard of living of Nigerians. www.m.allafrica.com/stories/201303011423.html/?maneref=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.google.com%2Fnews%2Fi%2Fsection%3Fpz%3D1%26cf%3Dall%26topic%3Dn |

Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Nasir El-Rufai said General Muhammadu Buhari is his preferred candidate for the 2015 presidential polls. El-Rufai who spoke to Radio France International Hausa Service denied eyeing the presidency saying it was just a propaganda by the Peoples Democratic Party. “Those who are saying Buhari should step aside for me are not members of our party. May be they are PDP members who are afraid of General Buhari. This is because the way they fear Buhari – I swear they do not fear God the almighty,” he said. Reacting to comments credited to Nuhu Ribadu about his book - The Accidental Public Servant - he said “it is not possible for me to write a book and everybody becomes convinced about what I wrote. But nobody came out to say Nasiru has lied in the book. The only thing they say is that they are not happy – like Nuhu Ribadu, he has said he never read the book, so if you didn’t read the book why talk? “The way I look at it, even Atiku Abukabar’s people who wrote rejoinders have not read the book. I hope that by now they have read it, and may be that is why they kept quite. There is no way everybody will agree with the book and there is no way one would say he never committed any mistake,” he said. El-Rufai also challenged his critics to write their own books for “Nigerians to choose which one they will read” because as far as he is concerned, he wrote the truthPDP as he knew it. www.informationng.com/2013/02/pdp-fears-buhari-more-than-god-el-rufai.html |

Former presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), retired General Muhammadu Buhari has stated that the merger of opposition parties is the only way to defeat People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Addressing elected representatives and other members of the party in Abuja on Monday, General Buhari said the country has been bedevilled by a government anchored on corruption, oppression and insecurity and there is an urgent need to halt the trend. He however advised members of the party to work within the framework of the law and aggressively mobilize the electorate to register ahead of the next general elections. The former Head of State said, “a brief glance at the political history of Nigeria confirms that to hold power at the centre, you need a broad coalition, alliance, merger or whatever you may like to call it. “Today’s situation is no different. The country is in the grip of a bad government whose only purpose is to retain power by hook or by crook – preferably by crook. “PDP does not need merger or alliance – they are already merged and are in alliance with the Police, INEC, and the Judiciary with the NNPC and pension funds. “The country is tired of PDP; we are tired of oppression; we are tired of corruption; we are tired of insecurity and we are tired, full stop!” “I believe merger is the only way to prevent continuation of this bad governance. The political class is at one that the only way to stabilise the nation is for the opposition to merge and face the ruling party,” he added. Buhari said while elected members of the CPC could hold their heads high that they were truly elected, the same could not be said of their PDP counterparts. “You were actually elected. You did not use police to intimidate voters; you did not use INEC staff to inflate your votes. You won in spite of all attempts by government to rig you out. How many in the PDP can say that? Very, very few. “You can, therefore, hold your heads high and regard yourselves as genuine representatives of your constituencies. You are true sons of democracy; your positions are even more important than those of party officials and party leaders because you are the face of the CPC.” www.channelstv.com/home/2013/02/26/merger-of-opposition-parties-is-the-only-way-to-defeat-pdp-buhari/ |
