Sagamite:But he said it. What the vocal beer-parlour pundits think is irrelevant. Sagamite:The Question is this: Are they the best we have? Sagamite:Time? 10 yrs? You don't need forever to impact discipline, hunger and passion. You need the ability and will. |
Sagamite:He did not say his players are average or worst in Africa and no one is asking for a miracle (we needed that to qualify for the WC ). Amodu's excuse is funny to say the least. No time to prepare? whaaaaaat? 2 yrs or so with the same team- A team he should by now know in and out? Sagamite:We've been there before. A semi-final berth is no exceptional achievement. Sagamite:And whose job is this? Amodu, no? |

Angola races against time ahead African showpiece WITH less than a month to the 2010 Africa Nations Cup in Angola, roads, airports and stadia remain uncompleted and not one ticket has gone on sale. According to AFP, the government has reportedly spent over $1 billion building four new stadia in Luanda, Benguela, Lubango and Cabinda, and on repairing infrastructure largely destroyed by 27 years of civil war, which ended in 2002. "It's going to be a race against time to get everything ready," a well placed source told AFP. "The pitch in Luanda has had no maintenance for weeks because of contractual issues and there are problems getting water into the stadium so the grass needs some serious work. Quite a few games are being played there, so it could be a major problem." According to Public Works Minister, Higinio Carneiro, however, there is nothing to worry about. Carneiro told AFP: "The stadia will be ready. They're practically ready now, there will not be any difficulty hosting the tournament in January. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/sports/article06//indexn3_html?pdate=171209&ptitle=Angola%20races%20against%20time%20ahead%20African%20showpiece&cpdate=171209 |
Amodu has no respect for our league, says Eguma By Olalekan Okusan COACH Stanley Eguma of Dolphin of Port Harcourt is not happy that Super Eagles' coaches could only select three players from the Globacom Premier League for the 32-man list released for the 2010 Angola Nations Cup. Eguma is sad that players from the league are not being given the opportunity to showcase their skills in the national team, adding that this goes to show that the national handlers look down on the league. He said: "I am surprised that it is only three players that were called up from the league. Does that mean that we don't have players that can make the national team from the league? "This is not too good considering that most of the league players are working hard every week in their respective clubs. I believe the aim of every player playing in the league is to represent his fatherland at major competitions and it is discouraging that these players are not given chance in the national team." The Sharks of Port Harcourt former handler added that such development would continue to fuel the exodus of players to foreign leagues, as it was clear the national team handlers would not recognise them if they continued to play in the local league. "Why won't our players travel abroad to play? They now know that for them to make the national team they have to leave Nigeria. But I want to challenge the national team coaches to give these players the opportunity to prove themselves," he said. "I also want to believe that the national coaches assume that the time is too short to start experimenting with some of the players and that is why they would want to use the foreign-based players they know to ensure consistency with the team." Despite that, Eguma queried the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for not keeping faith with the home-based Eagles, which would have complemented the foreign-based players in the national team. He continued: "I still don't know why the NFF is yet to assemble the home-based Eagles because if we have had this team, I am sure the national coaches would have invited some of the players to this team. "As things are now, I think attention should be given to the home-based team so that we can have players in the local league as part of the Eagles in future championships." On the exclusion of Chijioke Ejiogu, the current best goalkeeper in the league, Eguma said: "I want to say that every coach will be glad to have Chijioke in his team because he has proved to be the best goalkeeper in the league. "But since he has left my team, I cannot know his present form and if he is still in good shape, I don't know why such a player should not be part of the Eagles. He has been there before and he has the experience to man Eagles' post creditably." http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/sports/article03//indexn3_html?pdate=171209&ptitle=Amodu%20has%20no%20respect%20for%20our%20league,%20says%20Eguma&cpdate=171209 |
Don't expect too much in Angola, Amodu tells Nigerians From Ezeocha Nzeh, Abuja CONTRARY to what Nigerians expect at the 2010 Africa Nations Cup, Super Eagles' coach, Shaibu Amodu, has warned fans not to expect any miracle during the tourney because he has no personal target in the continental championship. Amodu, who said that winning the Nations Cup was not important to him, wondered what Nigerians expected from the team in Angola considering the little time it has to train before the competition kicks off. Listen to him: "Nobody should expect too many surprises from the team in Angola considering the fact that there is no time for preparations. "I do not know what Nigerians expect from me but every coach desires to win and I think getting a semi-final ticket will mean a good performance from the team." Adding that he had done his best as required by his employers, Amodu also dismissed fears over the availability of injured Wolfsburg of Germany striker, Obafemi Martins, for the Nations Cup camp, which opens in Durban, South Africa, on the 29th of this month. Martins has been sidelined by injury since November, raising fears that that the team's top striker will not recover early to play for Nigeria in the Nations Cup, which begins next month. Amodu told The Guardian yesterday at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Secretariat in Abuja that he had been in contact with the player, who has assured him that his doctors were doing everything necessary to ensure that he was fit to play for Nigeria in Angola. "I have always been in contact with Obafemi Martins and I want to assure Nigerians that he will be ready for the Nations Cup," Amodu said, also feeling that Eagles' camp will be competitive considering the number and calibre of players invited. He revealed that most of the players invited for camping in Fairmont Zimbali Lodge in Durban have told him that they would fly direct to Durban from their bases on January 2, 2010, four days later than stipulated. He added that none of them was expected in Nigeria, as they would not be released by their clubs before the New Year, which would make it difficult for the team to play together for one week before the first match against the Pharaohs of Egypt. Amodu also justified his inclusion of only three home-based players in his 32-man Nations Cup list, stating that the list he submitted to the NFF was what he needed to prosecute the competition irrespective of where the player plies his trade. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/sports/article01//indexn3_html?pdate=171209&ptitle=Don't%20expect%20too%20much%20in%20Angola,%20Amodu%20tells%20Nigerians&cpdate=171209 |

NFF move to replace Globacom Following the unilateral severance of its contractual relationship with telecommunications company Globacom, the Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation are moving quickly to find a replacement. At a board meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, the Exco came up with a directive to the Secretariat to 'move quickly to get a new Sponsor for the national teams'. The committee also announced the appointment of Mr. Tunde Adelakun, a London–based Sports Consultant and Chief Executive of New African Soccer, as NFF Consultant on general footballing matters and the Nigeria national teams. Globacom's five-year contract with the NFF came to an end of December 8, and with both parties failing to agree on the valuation of the property, the Glass House announced that they had severed the relationship and were in the market for offers. http://www.kickoff.com/static/news/article.php?id=12889 |
Amodu's missing home-based XI Nigeria coach Shuaibu Amodu's decision to list just three domestic league players in his 32-man squad to go into camp for the African Nations Cup in Angola has been the subject of deep disapproval within the country. KickOff's Colin Udoh looks at a selection of a League XI that Amodu could have considered, based on the coach's favoured 4-3-3 formation. GK: Austin Brown, Heartland Earned his spurs in goal for Dolphins before moving to Heartland, where his nimble feet, razor-sharp reflexes and command of his area helped the Naze Millionaires to the Final of the CAF Champions League. RB: John Nnam, Rangers Okay, I cheated a bit here. Nnam is more of a right midfielder these days, but he started out at right back under the tutelage of Lawrence 'Nigeria's Arsene Wenger' Akpokona and is such a versatile player that he can not only slot in there, but also at centre back. He is strong and uncompromising in the tackle and offers a potent offensive, goalscoring threat going forward. LB: Valentine Nwabili, Enyimba This was an agonising choice between ex Sharks man Nwabili, Dolphins' Mutiu Adegoke and Heartland's Joseph Eyimofe, all of whom have been in superb form the past two seasons. I decided to plump for Nwabili simply because the other two have had bites at the international cherry in the past. The Enyimba man has one of the most cultured left feet in the business, is a strong, wiry character and bounds down the left flank with almost inexhaustible reserves. CB: ThankGod Ike, Heartland What else can one say about this big, strong and powerful centreback. His mean defending at the back was one of several factors responsioble for propelling Heartland to that CAF Final, and he remains one who may still get a phone call from Amodu. CB: Nnaemeka Anyanwu, Enyimba Another graduate of Rangers from the Lawrence Akpokona years, Anyanwu is one of the best liberos (forgive the old-fashioned term) in the business, cleaning up after the likes of Ike when necessary. DM: Jonah Abutu, Dolphins Another position where I had to think hard and still feel bad about leaving out a player. Emmanuel Omodiagbe would slot in here just as easily as Abutu, but knowing Amodu's preference for big men, Abutu shades it. Additionally, the former Sharks and Bayelsa United man edges it in the strength department, and his holding responsibilities aside, is as great at bringing the ball out as he is closing down the channels and breaking up the opponents play. DM: Solomon Okpako, Kano Pillars Okpako is one of the most underrated players in the domestic league, but so was Claude Makelele. The Pillars holding midfielder excels at doing the simplest of things very well as he not only shields his back four, but also reads the play with uncanny ability. Along with Abutu, will provide the perfect platform for an offensive midfield player. AM: Josiah Maduabuchi, Enyimba Since being pulled from the wide right position and planted in a central attacking midfield role, Maduabuchi has blossomed, and is now the fulcrum of Enyimba's attacking movement. Has a good eye for the right pass and picks them with consumate ease. Plus his time as a winger means he can run at people and still ping in balls from just about, and to, anywhere with precision. Heartland's Stanley Okoro is another option here. RM/F: Osanga King, Heartland Showed his qualities at the African Youth Championships and remains one of the best wide players in the domestic league. His delivery may still need work, but Osanga's ability is not in doubt. LM/F: Osas Idehen, Enyimba Maybe it should be enough to say that he leads the Premier League goalscoring charts with 7 goals in 10 games. But additional qualities that Osas brings to bear are his tireless running and ability to get in behind the defence. CF: Ibrahim Babale, Sunshine Stars There is not a more consistent forward in the Nigeria Premier League. Babale has hit double figures during the past three seasons, and has great hold-up skills. Broke his leg last season but has returned to lead Stars' attack. Formation 4-3-3 http://www.kickoff.com/static/news/article.php?id=12890 |

Moi thinks we need to buy 3 good players. Abeg can someone tell us about Kalou. What's up with him? |
Lucky a.r.ses eh? ![]() That was a contentious decision from the ref to disallow that goal. |
jalether: jalether:You know not what you are I guess you were sleeping when the same back line kept successive clean sheets? Guess you were on holidays then, no? Now suddenly our defenders lost their mojo? I asked you a simple question, who do you want to replace and you are here telling me about maradona. ![]() Do you expect to win and score against teams and not concede ALL the time? I for one will be more worried if we don't score goals cos that means you cannot win. They are having a rough patch but defo they wil sort it out.
That Defence is Terryble!!! The match had my heart racing
They did not play well in the second half agreed, but in the first half I don't think Portsmouth passed our midfield. What does that tell you? Uncle Carlo just need to talk to them guys. . .finito. We don't need to start panicking or buying defenders now. Warfy Boy:DD was certainly a miss last night (especially in the second half). . .all the over-head long balls and those floating into the box. . .there was simply no one to convert them. I for one miss DD's knockdowns. You could see Ashley Cole (I think he was one of the best players last night. . .forget about the ricochet off his chest) constantly looking into the box while with the ball and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know what was on his mind. Kalouu? hmmmm, Like Nateevs said, we will need 2 pages here to discuss that guy. I'm trying to understand his problem. One moment he is brilliant, the next. . .you just wonder. Certainly if it's not physical then it is psychological. OMO IBO:Well said. |

jalether:And na who you wan change? The same back line with the best defensive record in the league? What are you on dude? ![]() |
jalether:Ok we might as well field reserves players since it does not matter who is on the pitch. ![]() |
We need 3 players. 2 MFs and 1 upfront. Anyone who thinks we don't need to buy should have a rethink. |
